Archiving weirdness

I archived my Documents folder today and copied it over to my other Powerbook, which runs OS 9. The documents folder on my Powerbook that runs OSX (10.4.6) is 8.76 GB (according to Get Info).
Two weird things happened as I did this.
1) As OSX was finishing up the archiving it told me it had more to archive than was in the file that I was archiving! It told me it had to compress a few more MBs, I don't remember how many but it could have been 40 or more. Why would it want to archive more than what is in the original file? Was it following an alias or is it really bad in calculating the size of a file? (I have noticed other problems with the OS not giving the correct file size initially. I have to open and close folder windows to get the correct size of folders OFTEN!)
2) When I copied the archive.zip file over to the Powerbook with OS 9, the OS 9 Powerbook said it copied the file but it was only 2GB (and it didn't say anything was wrong...)! I have copied many files at once over to this machine that add up to more than 2GB before. Is there a 2 GB limit for an individual file with OS 9 or is it something else? If so, I won't use Archive and will go back to Stuffit.
Finally, when I have Stuffit compress things rather than OSX's Archive, Stuffiit offers the ability to compress each file separately. Archive doesn't, at least as far as I can tell (Help says it compresses multiple files as one.) That would be a real nice feature.
Oh and one last question that is sort of related. I have noticed that files brought back from the OS 9 machine have number/letter combinations added to the end of their names when I see them back on the OSX machine. I assume this is OS 9's inability to deal with OSX file names? Is there any easy way to deal with this?

"If your OS 9 Powerbook is formatted as HFS Standard, then the maximum file size is 2GB. You'll have to reformat it as HFS Extendend if you want to access larger files."
It is labelled, in Get Info, as OS Extended, which when I look up in Mac Help says it is HFS+ which is HFS Extended, no?
I'll read the article but it looks to be pretty technical.
The Powerbook w/ OS 9 on it has either had OS 9 or OSX 10.4.3 on it. I erased 10.3 when I reinstalled OS 9 but some files that were moved back and forth may have acquired the weird endings at some point in the process. The newer Powerbook (G4) only had 10.4 on it. (Came with 10.3.4 and now has 10.4.6 though the system discs Apple sent me were 10.4.2. so when I boot with them to use Disk Utility I use 10.4.2 disks. The disks that came with it were corrupt.)

But with some different file name/ filename are randomly generated. But the content of the file remains the same.

This is standard functionality, it uses the original filename with a suffix of the datetime.

jar files, I suddenly can't use it anymore. Every time I try,
the "Corba profile wizard" runs instead! What's all that about?!

I assume you are using JDeveloper beta (build 184).
I am not sure what is going on, but the problem
can probably be fixed by examining <jd>\bin\gallery.ini
Somehow this file has the wrong association.
Anyhow, I would suggest you upgrade to the
official 2.0 release if you have not done so already.

Weird font issues! already repaired fonts, archive install

hi, so i got a macbook pro fully patched, and im getting this strange strange font corruption, or something, im not quite sure what it really is!

and a few other programs, needless to say, its system wide, not just one application!!
i have tried verifying all fonts, and that didnt help, and then i did an archive and install, thinking that would fix it, and it has not.
also, i have no sound when streaming any video through safari, but i do with firefox

Make sure you delete the fonts Helvetica Fractions and Times Phonetic if you have them. The screen shot is too poor to tell for sure, but it looks like the former (or a similar font that replaces Latin with math symbols).

My Excel with PowerPivots acts weird, it hangs when i try to change font color

I am facing a weird issue using PowerPivot in my workbook, there is a worksheet named Charts in my workbook and all the charts i am using resides in that worksheet. Whenever i try to change the font color in that sheet, my excel's color palette goes blur
and then everything just freezes and turns black. This problem is happening only with Charts worksheet, when i try to change the color in other sheets, it works just, the problem is only with Charts sheet. File
size is 16 MB, there are just 10 pivot tables with some calculations and some calculated fields. There are no add-ins other than PowerPivot.

Do you receive any error message?
Which Excel version are you using? Excel 2013 or other?
Which workbook format are you using? XLS or XLSX?
Are you performing any specific task?
According to your description, this issue seems only occur with the special worksheet "Charts".
Firstly, I recommend we copy all of the content to a new/blank Excel file to test.
If it works fine, this issue might be caused by the "Charts" workbook itself. We'd better check the "Charts" workbook. Or re-build the file with a new workbook.
If it still makes Excel hang with a new file, this issue might due to the content. Please check the content first.

Time Machine no longer backs up after archive & install

I have just had something mysterious happen to my Macbook - it spontaneously shut down, then wouldn't restart past a gray screen with Apple logo. After trying every troubleshooting page I could find, I ended up doing an archive and (re)install of Leopard on my hard drive. (btw, I ran the Disk Utility hard drive diagnostic, and it said the HD is fine, though I'm skeptical because it's making new noises I've never heard before.)
I finished that install, restarted, everything seemed fine, and I re-connected the external hard drive that had been used for my Time Machine backups before. Now, every time it attempts to back up, it's stuck on "preparing" for 30 minutes, then starts copying SLOWLY and the progress bar says "6 KB of 10 GB." Well, I have a lot more than 10 GB to back up. Then the process halts and I get an error message: "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume." And I can't get any more specific information about the error - can't find a log file or anything.
I know that there's a troubleshooting article about Time Machine issues with only backing up 10 GB, but mine doesn't even get that far, and besides, this is not my first Time Machine backup - I have no other external drive big enough to transfer my older data to while I reformat this drive as the support article suggests.
I was thinking that perhaps a system setting got messed up somehow and that maybe I should just forget this archive & install thing I did and instead do a fresh erase & install on my Macbook hard drive and then restore from Time Machine's old backup (a day or so before my Macbook started acting weird). But 1. would that make a difference? And 2. if Leopard gives me an error while backing up in Time Machine, what if I do the erase & install and I get an error trying to restore from Time Machine? That would be a nightmare.
My Macbook has always been so reliable - I'm very confused about what's going on! Any help would be appreciated.

How do I archive podcasts so they don't go on my ipod nano

I want to archive all the awesome podcasts I have in itunes but only have 2GB on my nano. How can I save these files on my computer and get them off my ipod? Thanks.

I am having another problem right now that is intermittent and frustrating. I am not able to try out your suggestion re: archiving because of it.
I plug my nano into the PC and windows recognizes the ipod as a removable device, but itunes doesn't "see" it. If I do itunes-->edit-->preferences-->ipod, it displays "no ipod connected" even though it is and windows knows it. I have successfully installed dozens of CD's and podcasts etc, but I haven't been able to update since Jan 10th. weird.

Weird video display in FCP but normal in QT

Okay, this is getting really tiresome now. Final Cut Studio has become weird on an Intel Core Duo iMac. When the symptoms first appeared FCP would not launch at all. It would quit on startup with a window to send a report to Apple. On that occasion I trashed and reinstalled the entire FC Studio.
Following this the application opened so I assumed everything was OK. But then I went to import some AVCHD clips and FCP displayed the video with some weird looking semi-negative, metallic crappy special effects look. So ... I replaced the OS and reinstalled FCP Studio. Everything worked OK.
Now, a day later, I go to import some more AVCHD clips and we are back to the weird video. Yet the same file opens normally in QuickTime. There are two screenshots of the same frame to illustrate this. One from FCP and one from QuickTime.

Has anyone seen this before or have any ideas because I am not going to devote another ten hours to reinstalling the poxy thing?

Camera files are imported with Log & Transfer from SD cards with the AVCHD camera, P2 cards from the Panasonic HPX, from archived files of the complete card contents or imported from existing Capture Scratch files.
The point is that the MacBook Pro behaves normally and the iMac used to. I have no idea why the same version of FCP on the iMac has suddenly become strange. Even stranger is that after reinstalling both system and FCP it all worked correctly and shortly afterwards the same weird stuff started again.
Also, as mentioned, the Capture Scratch QT.mov file that FCP creates following a Log & Transfer reads normally with QuickTime - and iMovie - on the iMac.

Hard drive on the way out? Weird behavior

Really weird problem. I recently installed Tiger - got it for the holidays. My computer had been kind've slow beforehand, but now it's acting really weird. It's not "snappy" - that is if you define snappy as "starts up within a hour". (I doubt the OS upgrade has anything to do with this, but I figured more information is better - I did an archive & intall w/ save prefs, btw).
The last time I shut down my computer, about a week ago, when I tried to start it up, it sat on the Apple screen without the spinny-wheel for a good 5-10 minutes, then sat on the spinney-wheel Apple screen for another 5-10. It eventually started up alright, though it was really slow for the first few minutes - programs or windows would take 30 seconds to a minute to open, and I got the rainbow beachball a lot. It was as if the hard drive needed to "warm up" and was very very slow, gradually speeding up, until it was okay.
Today I traveled back home and shut down my computer in the process, and I barely got it started back up at all. It got to the Apple screen (without the spinny wheel, and sat there for a good half an hour.
So I booted to single user mode and ran fsck, which quit with "disk0s10 I/O error" messages. Next I booted from the hardware test CD, ran both regular and extended tests, which reported no problems. Alright, I booted from my Tiger CD and opened Disk Utility, but that didn't see the hard drive at all!
Next thought: boot into open firmwave, and I did and did reset-nvram, reset-all.
Again I booted into single user again, did fsck, which again threw an I/O error at first, but then actually ran to completion anyway and fixed a few little things, rechecked automatically and said there were no problems. And as it went, it seemed to speed up, as if the disk was again 'waking up', slowly but surely. I rebooted as the message said to and went back into single-user one more time, ran fsck once more, no problems found and no error messages. Again it definitely went faster than before.
So I tried to boot up, with hope in my heart, and low and behold, it worked! So here I am, having backed up my entire Home directory to a DVD-R and printing out a few things. I guess I need a new hard drive, but the Disk Utility SMART status shows nothing wrong with the hard drive, and neither did the Hardware Test CD. Plus, now, as long as I don't turn off my computer for extended period, things seem normal. Oh, and this hard drive was just replaced by Apple in March when the original died (SMART had been warning me for a while that it was 'failing').
What the heck!?!? I'm tempted to think it may be a logic board or something then, but the Hardware Test CD said that passed to.
Other than going out and getting a new hard drive (and a Torx screwdriver), does anyone have any idea what may be going on here?
Oh, and the first time I tried to boot from the Hardware Test CD, the Superdrive gave a weird, ugly noise and ejected the disk. Again, something that makes me think it may be more than just the drive.
One more possible clue: the hard drive isn't making any bad sounds, but when it's ultra slow the clicking is barely existant, and then as it 'warms up' it returns to a better working state.
It's a PowerBook G4, Superdrive, 1 GHz, purchased in late 2002 - so, of course, my extended warranty expired in early December '05 :-P.

Just an update for anyone's who's interested. The plot thickens, kinda.
Yesterday, I did a write-zeros reformat of my hard drive... but it only was going to take about 45 minutes (60GB), and I was going out for a while and wanted it to last the whole time so that the hard drive wouldn't spin down. So I set it up again to do the 7-pass version.
That took about 5.5 hours for my 60 gigs, so all in all I did over 6.5 passes of write-zeros and it all went fine. Not what I expected.
So, I installed a completely fresh copy of Tiger and things seem alright. I even shut off the computer for 15 minutes once, and 30 minuts another time, and it really started up fine afterwards.
Also, I didn't know, but the default Tiger setting is to put the computer to sleep when it's been idle for half an hour or something. So when I went to bed last night it slept all night long. And woke up fine again this morning.
Huh, could that really have all just been a software thing? I've ordered a "cross-grade" from TechTool Deluxe to TechTool Pro. I've been meaning to buy that anyway, and it'd be nice to run a full set of diagnostics just to make sure it can't find anything either.
Could this have really been a software things? Seems so bizarre. I guess we'll see. If anyone has any more thoughts to share, have at it!
P.S. Thanks for the suggestion, but it wasn't a disk space issue. I don't think this drive has ever been more than half full

How do I encrypt an archive for a PC user?

I can't find a way to encrypt an archive for a PC user. There doesn't seem to be an option when making an archive from the Finder. I also tried making an encrypted disk image with Disk Utility but the PC can't open the DMG filetype apparently.
In the reverse, the same problem exists if I try to open a zip file encrypted on a PC - can't be done.
When I do a Google search the results for encrypted archive usually point to Stuffit Deluxe or encrypted disk images that you can use on your mac or another Mac.
Does anyone know how to make/use encrypted archives that are cross platform? I'd like to avoid buying a program (i.e. Stuffit Deluxe) just for this one utilitarian task. Thanks.

I tried the command you gave me. It worked! I could open the zipped archive on my neighbor's PC.
The only weird things, are that it seems to zip all the other folders, e.g. users\Marlinespike\desktop\target-file, in the filepath and not just the target file, and that it also drops the zipped archive in the home folder.
I tried adding some of the other commands, such as zip -e -r or zip -er or zip -e -d but it doesn't seem to work. However, this is a huge improvement over where I was earlier.
I clicked through those links - I forgot about Mac GNU Privacy and am going to check those out too.

An archive that did not work?

HI.. W/ about 9 GB left, Ive been burning photos to disk, from within Iphoto, to delete some of the 6000 images Ive amassed. I deviated from that on monday, while wanting to be double-safe, within Finder, I highlighted my Iphoto folder hierarchy and went to file\create archive and my computer sewed everything up in a 8.92 Gb zip file. As it finished, I went to burn the zip file on disk, but now only had 300 Mb left, and got warnings that my start up disk was low on memory.. soon I could do little on my machine. I couldnt even burn. So I dumped programs and Itunes to evenually get 9 Gb. I restarted the machine, and now Iphoto was displaying thumbnails but no larger images. I dragged the 'old' iphoto folder to the desktop, made a new one and then 'added' to library. Both are the same size (9.59 Gb). The 'old' library has all the old albums Ive made, but all the jpgs are gone (only 4kb aliases of the thumbs). My 'new' Iphoto library only has 275 photos, yet is about 9.59 Gb in size. How have I gone from 6000 images to 275? Why am I not finding/seeing these jpgs? It feels like all the parts of the engine are there, but how do I reconnect again? Once I 'zipped',, things went weird. Did I somehow stitch up all the images in that zip file I did, and how could I 'unzip' and replace? thanks so much.. erik

I tried an archive and install again and this time it worked. However, I now find I can't use Bluetooth to send files between my MacBook and iMAC. My MacBook OS after the archive and install is 10.5.1. I've gone through the pairing process and the two computers are paired and connected. However, when I try to send a file from my iMAC to my MacBook I get a message saying that "the device does not have the necessary services".
What does that mean?

Archiving MAIL + Attachments to a CD and be able to read later

Hello and I'm new to this forum, so excuse my ignorance. All I want to do is burn a bunch of old emails onto a CD for archiving and to make more room on my new computer. Some have attachments. I want to be able to load that CD and at a later date open it to find an old email by its original name, if I want to. So, I went to the Apple Store and all the brains there said it could not be done. They looked in books and asked a lot of bearded and other genious-types. This is weird, because how do I get all of those emails safely archived and be useful!!? If I just copy them onto a CD they show up as numbers and not their original subject lines...thus there is no way I would ever be able to find what I am looking for later. I'll bet one of you out there can help me figure this out and maybe tell the Apple folks how to do it, if you want. Please make it step by step, as I'm not a techno whiz...yet. Thank you!

Archiving MM_EKKO

We have started archiving mm_ekko obbject . Situation which i am facing is that when i ran write job to archive few month of data i was able to archive majority of that data but for some purchase document i get this message "Change date of purchasing doc. item within retention period".
I have checked the config for all the doc type and we have specified residence time 1 and 2.
Also when i check these document in ME23N i get a message displayed that "Document is archived" but i don't see any archive file created for these document which i can delete and store in the archive server. Now when the user pull up the information for these document it still coming from SAP DB .
Can some please provide the config information which i need to change for such document . The delivery date which is mention on these document are in the range of date for which i am archiving.

Thats really weird.
What is the release you are using??
In Standard SAP, You have different residence times.
SAP set the deletion flag if residence time one is met, but residence time 2 not yet.
If both times are met, the PO gets archived.
for examples see OSS note 948493 - Residence time in new reports RM06EV47, RM06BV47 .
And if you are using 4.6c Version, then OSS note 588463 .
A document item gets deactivated (deletion indicator) if you have more than one items in a document, but not all fulfill the archiving criteria, then the once that fulfill the criteria get deactivated, the other remain untouched. But the document gets only archived if all items are deactivated.
Please check and let us know.

Problem with archiving print lists

The archiving of some spool lists fails. Here the error message in OAM1:

It gets weird when I reprocess the request in OAM1, because then it works and we have no error message. It feels like when we start 50+ requests, some jobs fail. And if we start archiving of <10 requests everything works fine.
We tried archiving of 800+ spool lists in our QAS system with no problem. So we suspected, that our PRD content server may be broken or something. So we tried archiving spool lists from our SAP PRD system to our QAS content server -> same issue. The only thing left would be missconfiguration in our SAP PRD system but a few weeks ago everything worked fine and we had no issues.
Have somebody faced similar issues?

can you send use the logs from the content server?
can you check OAM1 if there is more info ( check logging)

Mail not updating the smart folder list after "archive" correctly

I am using OSX Mail on Yosemite (10.0.2) and have - since about two months ago - weird behavior of smart mailboxes. Previously, when I Archived (ctrl-cmd-A) messages selected in Smart mailbox, the GUI immediately removed the messages from the list and they just disappeared (moved to Archive). The messages in the Archive are not displayed in this smart mailbox.
Since about 2 months ago, the messages started to only get greyed out in the list, but do not disappear and stay there until I change the mailbox or optionally, Mail checks the servers and the GUI is then synced with server. When I change the mailbox and come back to this smart mailbox, the messages are not there and they were moved to Archive, so it more or less works. But I would like back old behavior when the messages get re-moved immediately.
Anyone has any idea why is this not working as before and how to get this fixed? Thanks a lot...

It didn't do anything for the VIP though, I selected the VIP group and rebuilt that, but it didn't seem to make a difference?
