ARD Snow Volume Weirdness

When I send out the standard "Volume Off" or Volume On" unix command (from the included templates) I get the following error message - although the command works!
osascript[2357:903] Error loading /Library/ScriptingAdditions/Adobe Unit Types.osax/Contents/MacOS/Adobe Unit Types: dlopen(/Library/ScriptingAdditions/Adobe Unit Types.osax/Contents/MacOS/Adobe Unit Types, 262): no suitable image /Library/ScriptingAdditions/Adobe Unit Types.osax/Contents/MacOS/Adobe Unit Types: no matching architecture in universal wrapper
osascript: OpenScripting.framework - scripting addition "/Library/ScriptingAdditions/Adobe Unit Types.osax" declares no loadable handlers.

I would look at what else is running. The Volume control should have nothing to do with Adobe Scripting.
The error is to load a dynamic library that can't be found.

  • Drop box Cache Snow Leopard

Hello all.How can I see what files are in my Drop box cache folder in Snow Leopard so that I can clean out the cache? Are there any other caches that I should clean out periodically? Is there a free program that will clean out my drop box files? What does the Drop Box cache do?What files go in it?

Yes, very strange. If you see a few posts up I actually did get it to work the way I need it to. I called Epson and they had ne reset the printer settings through the system preferences. On my first try this did NOT work, however everything worked as it should in Preview (another image program) and since it did work there the Epson tech basically siad then it's not their problem - most likely adobe.
However just for the hell of it after I hung up, I tried resetting the printer settings again and sure enough it worked. I was able to change the color settings while using Photoshop to manage colors - namely I needed to print a B&W through the Advanced B&W setting. When they are grayed out I can't do this. But even while doing color I don't like that it's grayed out. I've been printing both color and B&W for the last 5-7 years with photosjop manageing colors. I know about double profiling and how to avoid it.
If this was by design from adobe, it deosn't make sense that I was able to access it a few weeks ago after resetting the printer settings. And if this was the case when did Adobe supposedly make the change?
I don't know what's different now, the only thing I can figure is that I had this issue sometime after I installed the lastest Epson print driver - hence the call to Epson... Maybe it's snow leopard weirdness, but I had snow leopard on my laptop and was always able to print sucessfully, but have not tried it since I got the new Mac Pro.
And the strange thing it works fine on other programs. I can have photoshop manage colors and they are not grayed out. Strange and frustrating. Time to set up the DR.
I guess I shoud uninstall PS and then try re-installing it.
    thanks...

  • Volume changes on music

Haven't seen any topics on this so I thought I'd bring it up. I seem to have finally stabilized my AirTunes connection, but I have one outstanding issue: the volume.
When a song is playing, sometime the volume level changes for a while and then returns to the correct level. I have the 'Equalize volume' setting turned off, so I don't think that is it.
    Any ideas?

Ya, I have seen that. That deals with Audio Drops, not volume weirdness though. And after reading through most of it, it seems that it is a crap shoot whether or not anything fixes it.
Thanks for the info, in any case.

  • IPhone 4S 5.1.1 b206 failed to connect to L2TP VPN (Mac OSX 10.6.8)

I just upgraded my iPhone 4S from 5.0.1 to 5.1.1 b206, and I noticed this issue.
I have a Mac Mini Server running Mac OSX 10.6.8.
I build up the VPN server with L2TP and PPTP.
Before I upgrade my iPhone to 5.1.1, it works with L2TP and PPTP both.
After I upgrade to 5.1.1 b206, it only connect to PPTP, L2TP shows the error message
    "VPN Connection"
"The L2TP-VPN server did not respond. Try reconnecting. If the problem continues, verify your settings and contact your Administrator."
Simultaneously, I tried my iPad, it connects to L2TP AND PPTP with no problem.
    Please advice, thanks.

The point of checking the console, is there might be a message that pops up in response to trying to copy a file to the target. Your looking for a doorbell like response. IE you try to copy a 1k file, error message pops up. Try to copy again, same error message.
Is Copy Enabled on the target client?
ie: ard into the target, open system preferences, click on sharing, click on remote management. ( If allow access is set to "only these users"; then select the account your using to ard into the computer. ) click on the options button, Verify the fallowing items are checked: Open & Quite Applications, Change Settings, Delete & Replace Items, Restart & Shutdown, Copy Items. click the Ok button.
if Copy Is Enabled, have you verified the firewall is off?
ie: ard into the client, open system preferences, click on security, click on the Firewall tab, verify Firewall is off. This would also go for any programs that act like a firewall. (little snitch, anti virus barrier, extra)
Have you verified the ARD reporting time on the target computer? Some times ARD can get weird if the reports have ran in a while.
ie: get info on the client in ARD. click on the reporting tab. Set the reporting time to be a few minutes from the actual time. Let the time on the target computer hit the reporting time. Then try copying a file.
Have you ruled out the network?
ie: plug the ARD computer into the target directly by ethernet. make sure airport is off on both computers. Then try copying the file again.

  • "Color Matching" option in print dialogue box...

    Hello,
I've upgraded to 10.5 (printing from latest Adobe CS3 Photoshop and InDesign) to an Epson R2400 (with the latest 10.5 drivers from Epson). I let Photoshop/InDesign handle color management (rather than the printer).
Once I hit "print" from the application I'm sent to the OS X print dialogue box. From here I select my Epson settings as I always have (including turning off Epson Color Management) but now, within 10.5, there's a new OS X specific printing option listed as "Color Matching". When I select this I'm giving the options for "ColorSync" (from which I can then choose "automatic" or choose a specific printing profile — though, when I try to select one, I always get a warning saying I'll get undesirable results, and it only goes away when I select "automatic") or "Epson Color Management" (or something like that).
I do not have an option to turn these "off", I have to select one or the other.
Now, what exactly is going on here?
Which do I want to select?
I assume I would leave it to "ColorSync" since I know I don't want the printer to manage the color, but I'm just confused as to what these settings do since I'm supposed to be managing the color via Photoshop.
Can anyone shed some light onto this new option under 10.5?
    Thanks!
    Kristin.

  • User's Library?

So just made migration from Snow to Mav... need advice here and there!
I noticed on my Mav install after I migrated (Migration Assistant) that I had a "Library" in my user folder. It did NOT seem to have the custom icon and it was empty so I deleted it. All kinda knee jerk reaction. Looked at my Snow volume, wow, there it does have that special icon AND the **** thing is close to 10G.
Just in case, I copied that folder over to my Mav install and reset permissions giving me read/write access. Looking in there, I see a lot of stuff for some smallish things thjat moved over and work fine, so it SEEMS that during the migration, it did SOMETHING to that stuff in my old Users/Library.
So exactly what happened? Where did all that stuff go? I HAD opted to not migrate applications and computer & network settings when I dd the migration and things kinda sorta seem to be working just fine.

What software version do u have on the ATV? I have version 2.3.1 and I don't have that "Shared TV Shows" option.

  • Time Machine unable to free enough space

Just returned from a longer trip, taking a lot of pictures, and now my Time Machine backup is failing. Here's what I can read from the logs:
    1) For about 45 minutes, it determines what needs backing up
    2) Then, it determines it doesn't have enough space
    3) It gets rid of a few backups (between 1 and 10), but still doesn't have the space
    4) It gives up
This pattern has been repeating for days, once an hour, and no backup has happened.
How can I recover from this?

Jan 14 03:42:12 weirdedmbp /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[1931]: Completed backup disk image compaction

Right, I understand that there isn't enough space, but I also was under the impression that Time Machine is supposed to manage the space. The backups are the only thing on the time capsule. I'm backing up a single MacBook Pro with a 200GB drive to the 500GB time capsule, so Time Machine should be able to make space by simply deleting old backups. An so far, that has worked.
I get the impression that there's a limit to how many old backups are being removed, and it feels like a time limit. Meaning: If TM deletes backups for more than 10 minutes or so, and there's still not enough space, it gives up.
Trouble is that each turn of deleting some old backups is preceeded by that ~45 minute period of "determining what to back up".
That's what I'm doing now: Deleting old backups, and once that completes I'll compact the sparse bundle. Hopefully, that'll do the trick. So if I let this go on for days/weeks/months, it probably will eventually free up enough space again.
Still, this would seem like a rather common case, this should really work. So far, not very impressed with Time Machine.

  • Any way to cancel "Are you sure you want to restart" message?

In other versions of OS X, holding down the option key when selecting an option to restart or shut down the computer allowed the user to bypass the annoying "Are you sure…" message. This seems to have stopped working in Lion. Is there any way to bypass these messages? Did the modifier key get changed? There's nothing wrong with the keyboard's option key. The "bypass" works as it should in Snow Leopard.

Weird: after consistently NOT working for months, now that I've talked about it publicly, it has apparently been shamed into working as it should.

  • Jumpy pictures

All right, now when I make movies, some pictures have a blip of static/snow. What might be causing this? and how might I resolve this? As well, when I go to the picture settings, sometimes all I get is snow. Weird.

Do you have HDR turned on in Camera and in Settings > Photos & Camera > Keep Normal Photo turned ON? If so the Camera wil save both the HDR version and normal version of each photo taken.

  • Unlimited Client vs 10 Client

So, does unlimited client mean that a company/school district can have the actual ARD program on an unlimited number of computers? Or does it mean that the ARD can "see" and control an unlimited number of computers?

Not using ARD. When being used for educational or business use, you (until such time as Apple changes the terms of the Mac App Store) must purchase one copy of ARD for each system on which you would want to install the ARD administrator application. ARD is volume-licensed in packs; for 40 users, you'd need two 25-user packs at $2499 per pack.
I don't know if there is any other software that would allow viewing multiple screens at once that would also be less expensive. Casper from JAMF has a remote control feature, but I don't know if it allows viewing multiple screens and if so if it would be cheaper than ARD.
Perhaps a different approach would be to lock down the browsers. If you are using any of the CMS such as Blackboard or Moodle, Respondus Lockdown Browser might be worth considering. There may also be standalone ways to lock a browser from a central point (it can be done via ARD's command line, sort of, but I'm not sure I'd trust it in a testing environment).
    Regards.

  • Zen Micro LCD probl

    Hi,
I have recently purchased a Zen Micro and so far I am quite happy with it. The only thing that concerns me is that the LCD screen renders some weird lines at times, lets say when I increase or decrease the volume, weird lines or more like plains pop up moving up or down. Is this supposed to happen to the screen or is it a buggie screen and I should request a new player?

Although I can't recall if the problem was there at first or not since I did the update immediately after I connected the player for the first time.

  • Does ARD Admin 3.6.x work with Snow Leopard Clients

Our school would like to make a volume purchase of ARD, which is only available for Mountain Lion/Lion. At present, we are using Snow Leopard on all our computers. If we upgrade the teachers' computers to Mountain LIon and give them ARD 3.6.x, will they be able to view/administer Snow Leopard clients? It would be great to hear from someone who has done this in a school setting.
If anyone involved with ARD support is listening, it would be nice to see an ARD admin versus ARD client compatibility table in the specifications for this very useful product.

The current release of the ARD adminstrator application works fine with my Snow Leopard clients which have the 3.5.3 client, though I only have a few and my use is pretty modest. You may get feedback from others who use ARD with a larger client base.

  • Very Weird Time Capsule Volume

I just began using a 27" iMac yesterday, and when I tried to backup to my external drive, got a message saying I was out of space, actually that I had 49.8g space available on the external, and needed 85g for the backup. So I tossed the oldest backup, freeing 120g. Tried again, same message; I tossed another day's backup, same message. I then repaired the disk. Same results as before. No matter how many days I toss, I have the same available space on the external, which is insufficient. I feel like just disconnecting it, buying a new one and starting anew, but I thought I'd ask here if anyone can see something I've not thought of. Applecare is good, but they can only go so far, I've found. Sometimes electronics just get too weird to figure, and hundreds of brains on a forum may be the key to this. Thanks for any contributions you may make.

My apologies, now that you've pointed this out, I look and can't find a "Time Machine" forum
For future reference, there are actually two of them: one in the Leopard section, one under +Snow Leopard.+
And I'm afraid I know the answer to this, but just exactly how did you "toss" the oldest backup, and why do you think that freed 120 GB?
The list of "backups" on my external volume are approximately 120gb each. I trashed those, so that's "toss".
Do you mean you deleted them via the Finder? If so, that's a problem.
Unfortunately, Apple doesn't do a very god job of warning folks not to do that; it can corrupt your backups. Repair them, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).
Ordinarily, you shouldn't have to delete backups, but you can do it safely via Time Machine. See #12 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).
You didn't gain much space because of the way Time Machine works. After the first full backup, it only copies what's changed since the last one. But by using "hard links" to the things that didn't change, each backup is a snapshot of the way your entire system looked. So all the things that didn't change get counted when the Finder calculates the size of each backup folder. If that sounds weird, it is! See How Time Machine works its Magic for a (hopefully) better explanation.
I ordered another external drive from LaCie today, so the old one is going into the closet in case I need something from it eventually; probably not going to happen, but I'm not willing to erase it and face possible loss of something critical.
Ah, good plan. If your backup volume isn't at least 2.2 times the size of the data it's backing-up, Time Machine would have deleted all but the last backup, but still not had enough room, and failed.
And you can always view or restore from the old set, via the +*Browse ...+* option, in #17 of the FAQ.

  • Snow Leopard finder doesn't list all files on Windows 7 volumes

From my Macbook Pro (10.6.8), I can connect to my Mac Pro, while it is running Windows 7 in Boot Camp, in order to access the Mac Pro's 6 volumes (1 Boot Camp, 5 Mac volumes). This is using SMB via Finder's 'Connect to server…' on an Airport network.
However, Finder never displays all the files and folders on any of the Mac volumes it connects to through Windows 7. It seems to show approximately the first 18-9 files and folders, and then nothing. The same applies when I open a nested folder — it doesn't list all of its contents.
Any ideas as to what's causing this and how I can fix it? I have searched all over but can't find any answers yet, so I'm hoping someone here has seen this before.

Thanks for the reply, but I do have the Restore Windows box checked (see below). And the Resume features info (cnet link) only addresses how to turn the feature off, either selectively or globally. I'm simply looking for the functionality that I had with Snow Leopard and now seems to be absent. Maybe it's a bug in my Finder.

  • Speakers no longer working on Mac- weird symbol won't let me change volume

    Hello
First off, I am not super computer savy!
My mac's internal speakers are no longer working. The volume control has faded in color, and when I try to press the volume buttons on the keyboard, it won't let me change the volume and there is a weird circle with a line through it. When I reboot the computer makes the reboot sound. I have tried tinkering around with the system preferences, but it is not muted, and it won't let me adjust the volume at all. This happened once before, the other day. Came out of nowhere and started working after about 10 minutes. Any suggestions! Much appreciated

    Hi,
What output do you receive if you enter this command in the Terminal (Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal.app):
    <pre>codesign -vvv Safari.app</pre>
If Safari has been modified, such as by a Safari enhancer program, this command should inform you.
If that is the case, try reinstalling the Safari package from the 10.5 installer DVD. This article relates to reinstalling Safari from the 10.4 DVD, but the principle is the same.
