Are laggy adjustments/rendering camera specific?

The thread on thumbnails got me to thinking, some people report snappy adjustments, quick rendering and great performance with A3. Others (like myself) experience slowdowns on some photos after applying several layers of edits to a photo ("processing" thumbnails, slow rendering of adjustment changes etc.)
Just a few things that tend to take a long time to render an updated screen view for me (i.e. I get a low quality jaggy preview and it takes up to 20 seconds to "sharpen up" and show the changes:
. ANY changes to the Raw Fine Tuning brick, especially in 100% view
. some brushes take a long time to render changes (skin soften and sharpening to name a couple) again, worse in 100% view
. noise reduction (worse in 100%)
. Edge Sharpening (worse in 100%)
. rendering a proper image after zooming 100% into a photo after it's been adjusted moderately with the above adjustments, or cropped/straightened. Also slow to render if scrolling around in 100% view.
Notice that the worst wait times tend to appear in 100% view, though zoomed out sometimes I still get the "loading" pinwheel. These are adjustments that I prefer (justifiably so) to do in 100% view but the lag is just terrible sometimes. Some photos are worse than others, and it tends to be worse as the adjustments pile up.
My equipment is listed in the sig, my MBPro tends to be a bit faster than the iMac. Before you ask, I've done all the standard performance enhancing things (previews settings, faces off, defrag etc etc etc).
I am using Canon 7D full size raw files (18mp, ~25MB files). A couple people in the other thread mentioned this sort of lackluster performance with their 7D files, and I've seen people with 5DMk2's complain as well. I wonder if Aperture has a hard time dealing with large raw files, specifically Canon raw files.
So informal poll, three part question:
(1) Are you experiencing slow downs in rendering of adjustments on your photos, especially at 100% view?
(2) What type of file from what camera are you using (i.e. large .jpg from Nikon D70, full size raw from Canon 1dMk4 etc)
(3) What is your computer set up?
I wonder if this is a trend, and am just curious to see if my wild theory has any merit.
I see no reason why my two machines run LR and PShop flawlessly and with instant graphical feedback of ALL adjustments, while A3 lags and chews on the adjustment for up to half a minute before showing me what my sharpening move did to the photo at 100%.
If it is some sort of trend, maybe it's fixable in a software update that might be forthcoming. I really, REALLY like Aperture 3, it's pretty much exactly what I want/need for a photo management/editing program (save for the lack of output sharpening, but that's another thread for another day :)) I just wish it was as snappy as the Adobe products with my 7D files.

I certainly think that the size of the file is a factor . My 5d MKII files (>20Mbyte) are slower than files from my S90 (around 10MByte ), but on my system configuration perfectly manageable and usable.
I think the file size, GPU memory/speed and memory in general are all factors that interact together to create what some see as lags and slow downs.
Sharpening and noise reduction is a fairly intensive algorithm to apply in real time ( I know, I have written code to do it in non real time and it's a lot of pixel sampling and comparing, computing ).
I have conducted extensive testing with Aperture 3.0 and for that matter Lightroom as well ( lot's of people point to LR as being much better and I'm fed up with the generalization ). The reality is, both programs struggle to keep up with the application of real time application of localized brush strokes with large files, especially when you have lots of adjustments applied. I have some interesting data comparing these things and might publish it one of these days.
I think Apple need to be realistic with minimum system requirements to run fully all of the features with programs like AP3. Sure, you can apply adjustments to a small JPEG when you only have 1GB of RAM of 128MB GPU RAM etc, but it's common sense that at some point when you files are 20, 50, 100MB you are going have an issue when you are attempting to overlay in real time multiple computations to an image.
I also think Apple has not yet optimized the code in this area. I have carefully monitored the number of processor threads, memory usage and CPU cycles when some of these things are being applied and, while I am not privy at all to anything under the hood with Aperture, as a fairly seasoned software developer of real time automation software, I think they have some tweaking to do, that will make this better for more people across a range of hardware and image sizes. At least I hope so! It will be interesting to see what the next update brings.
AP3 is really a very, very powerful tool and I liken it to the first and early releases of Final Cut in the video world. I remember lots and lots people complaining about performance with Final Cut - mostly it was the system setup, limited resources in the machine and not yet knowing the best work flow. I see the same trend on some of these threads with AP3.
No doubt in my mind Apple could have done a much better job of quality control here and I fear they bowed to pressures to release something early. For some the out of the box experience has been good for others not so much. I have no doubt they will get it right, but it doesn't help people having issues at the moment.
Just my 2-cents.

  • Photoshop 10 Save As removes Camera Specific Metadata

I have Photoshop 10.0 (Windows XP) and use it to edit my photos from my new Nikon D300 camera. I create and maintain my images in JPG format as a preference and have no plans of saving in RAW. My D300 includes 40 to 50 camera info/metadata elements including the camera and lens settings at the time the photo is taken. When I do a simple "Save As" in Photoshop 10 to a new JPG file (whether image adjustments are done to the source image or not), the new JPG file is stripped of about half or more of the original camera-specific metadata elements. Is there a Photoshop setting or Nikon/Photoshop plug-in that will force the software to preserve/retain the original metadata? (The Capture NX2 solution is not an option as the one key feature I use is Auto Levels - The Auto Levels feature in Capture NX2 washes out my photos to an undesireable state). Therefore, I need to continue using Adobe for the benefit of their better Auto Levels feature and I also use their automation heavily as I process 100's of photos at a time. The only drawback of Adobe right now is they discard most of the camera specific shooting data at the time of save. RAW is not an option as the file sizes are too large for my storage, sharing and usage needs.

You may need to define custom XMP data fields for the extra data, which is done in the XMP control panel in Bridge. Photoshop should respect these fields and retain matching info by transfering it to XMP. Possibly someone has done this already and may provide a template somewhere for download. If that does not work, then I would guess waiting for CS4, due to be released officially on September 23, or using Lightroom 2 wil lbe your only option.

  • Why are clipping adjustments in the basic panel not being saved, updated or shown in the histogram? I am using LR 5.7 on a MAC OSX 10.8 etc.

Why are clipping adjustments in the basic panel not being saved, updated or shown in the histogram? I am using LR 5.7 on a MAC OSX 10.8 etc.

Here is more information and hopefully a better explanation. My version of
LR-5.7 (OS X 10.8.5) apparently does not save the .NEF (Nikon RAW) edits
done in the basic module. That means that I can correct exposure,
highlights, shadows etc. but once I go to another picture and returned to
the edited one the histogram (on the edited photo) and specifically the
clipping triangles are white or some other color. This is normally suppose
to indicate that some channel or all channels are clipped in the
highlight/shadow areas. If I adjust any slider in the Basic panel even as
little as one +/- value or press the J-key, the histogram will now show the
original edit. Moving on to another photo and then returning to to
previously edited one and again the edits are "not saved" and I have to hit
the J-key or adjust a slider to see the previously edited information
    reflected in the histogram.
This is especially frustrating for fours reasons. If I have edited a shoot
and return to it I cannot see from the clipping information whether the
original edit was correct and of course I might re-edit it (to some now
incorrect value). This brings up the second issue synchronization. I can't
rely on it because if I go back to fine tune a specific image in the batch
the triangles are white or some other color for that and every image. I have
to hit the J-key to show/hide clipping or the back slash key to see
before/after previews. This is the third issue which is very time consuming
and inefficient regarding my workflow. The forth issue is that I have
noticed that normally when an image is saved in PS, LR adds a copy of the
saved version to its catalogue. I have noticed that the PS to LR saves are
all wrong in terms of exposure (they are much lighter in tone) than the
original LR edit and the PS edit on my screen. If I check the PS to LR photo
in LR I notice that the Basic panel values have been changed and that I have
to sync the image with the originally edited RAW/NEF LR file to get it to
    look the same.
Note 1). I am using an Apple cinema display and a calibrated Eizo ColorEdge
monitor to view my NEF files. I have reverted back to using LR 4 however I
am not sure if I should expect compatibility problems with Camera Raw 7.4 in
LR 4 vs. Camera Raw 8.6 in LR 5.
Note 2.) I am going to do an import converting everything to .dng  to see if
    this is a work around.
Note 3). I would be interested in knowing if this issue is related to the PS
RAW engine ver. 8.6, the Adobe created NEF calibrations or LR 5.
    Note 4). I have duplicated this issue in OS X 10.8.5, OS X 9.xx and OS X
    10.10.1
Hopefully someone else has noticed this problem. Any shared information
would be valuable. Thanks for the reply.

  • How do I turn off ALL auto adjustments in Camera Raw?

    SUMMARY:
I am simply trying to open my images in Camera Raw (version 8.6.0.254) via Bridge CC exactly how they were shot in camera, with no auto adjustments whatsoever.  I already have all of the auto boxes unchecked in the Camera Raw Preferences dialogue box under Default Image Settings.  I am shooting raw on a Sony A7r.
    MORE INFO:
This discussion is not being created without prior research on how to solve it.  Hopefully there is a simple solution that I have overlooked and missed when looking for it.
I shoot my raw images flat on purpose.  The in-camera saturation is turned down, along with a lot of the other picture profile settings in the camera.
I use Bridge CC to sort though my images and make selects.  In Bridge, I have "Prefer Embedded" selected for my thumbnails in order to stop the auto processing to happen to the thumbnails there.
The problem is, as soon as I open my raw images in Camera Raw from Bridge, the auto adjustments kick in and the saturation and exposure are automatically adjusted.  I can't figure out how to stop Camera Raw from making adjustments to my raw images.  As stated above, all of the auto check boxes are unchecked in the Camera Raw Preferences.
When the "Command U" shortcut is pressed after an image is opened, it applies the auto settings, making it clear the Camera Raw thinks that nothing has been applied yet.  Toggling between "Camera Raw Defaults" and "Image Settings" in the side drop down menu does nothing either.
Below are two screen shots.  One of how the thumbnail looks in Bridge, desaturated and flat.  The other is how the image opens in Camera Raw with no user adjustments what so ever.  You can see how the saturation and exposure have been adjusted:
Bridge Preview - this is how the image was shot in camera.
Camera Raw - Straight after opening the file with no user adjustments.  You can clearly see the dramatic auto adjustments, but all of the sliders are set to default.
I would love to get some help with this, so I can see and work on my images as they were shot.  Im really hoping it is a stupid oversight on my part with an easy fix.  Thanks for the help.

As was already said: the camera's interpretation of the raw data is just one interpretation, and not the same as Adobe's. Don't confuse it with "exactly how they were shot", as this doesn't apply when shooting Raw. Granted it IS the manufacturer's interpretation, but you wouldn't be shooting Raw and using Adobe Camera Raw if you thought the manufacturer was always right.
One thing nobody has mentioned is Adobe's "baseline exposure" compensation factor. Camera Raw adjusts the default preview exposure by a factor of EV based on their measurements of the camera sensor. My present camera is boosted by 0.35EV and my last camera by 0.5EV. There is a way of determining this using EXIFTOOL, but I can't remember how to do it offhand. For the last few years, I have adjusted my own Camera Raw defaults by reversing this compensation, so it more closely matches the exposure I was expecting.
EDIT: here's the procedure, if you're interested. Re: Baseline Exposure

  • Way to view camera-specific metadata

Is there a way to view camera specific metadata? My camera has a variety of fields that include the mode the camera was using when the picture was taken. This is not part of the standard EXIF/IPTC I believe, so bridge doesn't display it. I know it's there because other programs such as OPANDA's IEXIF does display it.
    Thanks!
    Carlos

    Curt and Jim,
    Thanks for your responses.
I do get all the "standard" fields like exposure settings and focal length. And I know how to set the preferences to display or not display any of the standard fields
    b that Adobe knows about.
However, there are other fields that my camera uses. For instance, my wife often takes pictures in Canon "vivid" mode. I have used the
    i exiftool
utility, and I cantell that the metadata actually has an entry called "My Color Mode" that tells me the picture was taken with vivid or normal. Similarly another entry will tell me whether the picture was part of a panoramic (and even whether it was left to right or right to left) or the fact that drive mode was in "single shot"
In other words, Canon actually puts in there just about every setting the camera has. Not surprising, Adobe doesn't know about all of these settings, and one wouldn't expect it to, given the huge amount of cameras on the market.
The question was whether there is an extension or some other way to "train" Adobe products to recognize other data that may be in the file. Exiftool is great for checking one or two pictures, but its command line interface doesn't lend itself well to working with the actual picture at the same time.

I am trying to open some *.avi files in quicktime, they are from my security camera at home.  It will not open them, would anyone be able to help me?  It says I need a plugin but it does not tell me which one.
Basically your player is telling you that you need to install the codecs that will play the compressed data within the AVI file.
AVI is a legacy file container in which the tracks of data are interleaved to maintain synchronization. This data can be encoded using many different audio and video codecs. Your problem is to determine which codecs you need for the player you are trying to use and install them if they are available. Failing that, your will either have to play the files in a different player which has the codec support your require built into the app or convert the content to a compression format that is natively compatible with the player you wish to use.
Since you have not stated what platform, operating system, and particular player you are targeting for playback, it is difficult to provide precise instructions for fixing your specific problem at this point. Suggest you try alternative players compatible with your system and platform to see if they will play the files, use a dedicated media information utility to determine the codecs needed for playback, or post a sample file for analysis.

  • Camera specific WB next?

I think the new camera specific profiles are excellent and will move many new customer from camera made raw converters to LR.
It seems like LR manage to read the WB setting in camera and translate that to ACR WB numbers - very good! As shoot, Auto and White balance selector work as expected.
What still confuse many users are the difference in WB settings when you choose the other setting in the menu. Cloudy gives 6500 temp and +10 tint that is way of for my D300 with to warm WB and a strong cast of pink.
If I take a test shoot with my D300 set to cloudy in camera and import the picture LR shows WB values of 5650 temp and -1 tint... I've made preset for my camera and don't use the WB menu for this.
I would suggest that values for Daylight, Cloudy, Shade etc. should be camera specific and match the default values from that camera. Not equal in number, because the different vendors use different number system, but equal in color. Then Adobe would have removed another argument for not using ACR/LR.

    > If I have 3 D300 and set all cameras to WB "Cloudy" in camera. Will LR/ACR give different WB values for each cameras when I import pictures from them?
No, or if it does, then that happens based on some mysterious circumstances.
I loaded six images by six different D300, shot with four different ISOs, under different illuminations. "Cloudy" means always (6500,+10).
    > The Cloudy setting you get now is of no use
Are you talking of a scenery shot with "Cloudy" in camera and processed by ACR "As shot", or shot with whatever setting in camera and processed by ACR as "Cloudy"?
I suggest you to do following test:
    1. shoot a grey card, sufficient large for WB template,
    2. use that shot as WB template,
    3. shoot the same card again.
Now compare the temperatures shown by CNX and by ACR. I guess they will not be the same; however, when processed in ACR "As shot", is the grey grey? If you pick WB on that spot, are the temperature and tint far from the "As shot" value? That is namely the only important issue, not the absolute numbers.
    > and give a strong pink cast
IMO those settings are for JPEG shooters. Depending on the setting, shoot a white/grey patch for picking WB on (for sampling the reflected light), or use a "white disk" for sampling the light source.
Moreover, the fact, that clouds are over your head does not mean, that the actual illumination is "cloudy". Reflections from the surroundings change the illumination. I just tested this on images shot in the mountains with much green. It was truly "cloudy", but the setting "cloudy" resulted yellowish/reddish white objects and yellow greenery.

  • IPhoto imports photos with wrong dates even if the dates are fine on the camera

    Hi!
When I import photos with iPhoto, sometimes it imports them with wrong dates, even the dates are fine on the camera. It puts dates such as 2032. Does anyone know how can I fix that. As far as I know there is no way to change dates of the photos.
    Thanks!

well that is very confusing since if the date is correct on the camera it will be correct in iPhoto

Try looking through your iPhto menus - two commands - adjust time and date and batch change time and date - asjust is used to correct incorrect dates like a comera setting -   Batch change for missing dates like with scans

At the moment no, you cannot move photos between albums in the Photos app directly on the iPad - but with iOS 5 (which will be free to download) in the Autumn, from http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/features.html#photos :

  • Why are HP printer cartridges country specific? Is there any way around this?

I have just moved from the UK to Newfoundland, Canada and I have brought my HP PSC 1610 printer with me.  I was advised not to bring any cartridges with me because they would explode during the flight so I had to buy new cartridges upon arrival.
I noticed that the cartridge numbers recommended for my printer were similar but not exactly the same but the (HP, etc.) websites I looked at did not mention that HP printer cartridges country specific.
In the UK black cartridge is an HP338 (C8765EE).
In Canada the websites told me that the black cartridge is a 94 (C8765WC).
I ordered a 94 cartridge (which took an indordinate amount of time to be delivered) and when I installed it my printer would not accept it ("not intended for use in this printer" error message) even though it fit perfectly.  I looked at the packaging in greater detail and noticed that I had been sent a 94 (C8765WL) and I also noticed (in a very small font size) "for sale only in Latin America".
    My questions are therefore:
    1) Why are HP printer cartridges country specific?
    2) Is there any way around this?  Eg is there anything I can do to my printer/ laptop to tell it to accept this cartridge?
    3) Are 94/ C8765WL cartidges compatible with 94/ C8765WC cartirdges?  Ie did the supplier sell me something that couldn't be used even if I had a Canadian HP PSC 1610 printer?
    4) Can I return the cartridges to the supplier given that it is based in Canada, they delivered it to me in Canada and yet they sold me a product that says "for sale only in Latin America"?
    Thanks

You will need to Contact HP to request a "Regionalization Reset". There should not be any charge for this, it is covered as part of the cartridge warranty. You will need to have access to your computer and printer while on the line with HP. You will also need to have a set of cartridges for the new region, once the reset is complete cartridges from the original region will no longer work.  HP's web page on the subject is here.

  • What cameras  are compatible with the camera connection kit

what cameras are compatible with the camera connection kit and ipad2

I also recently bought the camera kit and found that it worked fine as long as you don't format the SD card using PC. Once I re-formatted using my camera I could once again upload my photos. that was until I switched formats to Adobe RAW, it seemed unable to upload again. So I switched to S RAW and that worked fine. Sometimes my kit won't upload photos but I find that by just re-inserting the card it works fine.
Haven't tried video yet, but I recently learned that the devices are quit sensitive to the "Format"(that needs to be FAT32, or exFAT- but in this instance it needs to be formatted by a Mac).
    Good luck

Bought iPhone 5.  Really disappointed.  Within 2 days, alert sounds and typing sounds are not working.  Camera is terrible.  My old HTC One S was far superior!

First, no, it is not showing orange.  I checked the silent button immediately.  Then I checked the sounds section of my settings, but all is good there.  When I get a phone call, it rings fine.  Alert and typing sounds are not working.
Second..., yes this was a technical point (in which I was hoping someone else might have had the same problem, with a solution), as well as a complaint (definitely one worth making as it is not a minor issue - it is important to hear text alerts when you have children).
