Arg. "Open With this Program Always" won't stick

I had a particularly hairy set of issues with my PC data import that involved multiple duplicates, permission issues, as well as Finder wanting to /copy/ data from within my hard drive instead of /moving/ this data. This was solved eventually with some advanced Geek Action at the Genius Bar.
This resulted in a great deal of wasted time, Copy crapping out due to my not having access to some image in a 500 image move, my not being exactly sure if I was able to archive all my images off my hard drive etc, etc.
Right now I believe I am not finding my effort to open a particular file type by right clicking, going to Browse, Open With, Use this action at all time to stick. I set jpg to open with Photoshop Elements and then it will open with Preview. This is driving me to the point of thinking I need to do a clean install.
Anyone think that this is in fact necessary?
Is there a good way to test the integrity of my system if I am starting to have doubts??!!
Thanks!!
Jon

Well, er, in this case I get "You can’t change the item “Screen shot 2010-05-18 at 3.22.27 PM.png” to always open in the selected application".
That usually means your permissions for the file do not include write privileges. This is one of the things you can check in the "Get Info" window,
I'm not getting the right click menu to open when I hold down the Option Key but I will try the Get Info suggestions.
To be clear about it, a right click on the item is still required to open the popup menu; pressing the option key just changes a few of the menu item choices. Try it: right click & hold on a file as normal but before making any menu choice press & hold the option key.
There are dozens of timesaving shortcuts like this in Snow Leopard. One I just learned about: most users know that from the Apple menu you can open the "About This Mac" item & many know that from that you can click on the "More Info…" button to launch System Profiler. But you can do that in one step: if you hold down the Option key the "About This Mac" item becomes the "System Profiler" item.

  • "Open With..." won't stick

    I'd like to let .m4v files open with QuickTime player by default (and not by iTunes, which then starts to load/copy them). It used to be easy. take one such file, hit Cmd-i, set "open with" to QuickTime Player and check the box that makes it stick for all files.
    But, when I do this now, not even the selected file will change. What can I try to fix this?

    You may have a corrupt LaunchServices database. To verify this, please enable guest logins and fast user switching in the Accounts preference pane, then log in as Guest (no password needed.) Create a file, for example in TextEdit, and save it to the Desktop. Change the filename extension to 'm4v', then try to change the default opener for that file. If it changes, log out and log back into your account. Run the following command in a shell:
    /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain user
    Then log out and log back in. This will reset all file-application associations. You can now disable guest logins, if you wish.
    If changing the default opener doesn't work in the guest account, then you have a system-wide problem and probably need to reinstall.

  • Need help fixing a bug with this program...

    I've been working for hours trying to fix the bug I have with this program...
    http://ss.majinnet.com/AccountManager.java - This is the source code of my program
    http://ss.majinnet.com/Dalzhim.jpg - This is an image used inside the program
    http://ss.majinnet.com/sphereaccu.scp - This is a text file you need to use the program
    First of all, to know what bug I am talking about.. You will need to download those 3 files.. Then you can compile AccountManager.java and run it.. When the program has opened, go into: File -> Open Account File
    and browse until you can open up the text file sphereaccu.scp ... Then there should be a list of names appearing on the left, and when you select any, there will be variables appearing in the TextFields on the right. When that's done, all you have to do to see where the bugs are is to use the options: Edit -> Create New Account as well as Edit -> Remove Account ... When you use the Create New Account option for the first time, it works fine.. But when you use it a second time, errors are appearing on the console (can't find what generates those errors...). And the biggest problem is that when you use the Remove Account option, it doesn't remove the selected account, and over that it generates errors in the console as well...
    If anyone can help me fix those errors, I'd be very grateful !

    won't pretend to understand everything or why you do somethings, but FWIW,

  • Open With my program doesn't work

    I have Java program which runs on PCs and saves files with a special extension. When I double click on a saved file, I would like it to open with my program. This worked before when my program was stored on the C drive. But now I store it more appropriately in the Program Files folder, and it does not work anymore.
    If I try to say Open With and browse to my program, it does not show up in the list, so I cannot choose it. Or if I go to Default Programs in the Start menu, click on Associate a file type or protocol with a specific program, select my extension, click on Change program, and browse to my program, again it does not show up in the list, so I still cannot choose it.
    I am using Windows Vista, and I am able to make associations with other programs, but not with my program.
    How can I make it work? Thanks for your time!

    Sorry to bother you with this. Yes, this was a Windows problem, not a Java problem.
    The solution was to use the Registry Editor. Just for the record, let me post my solution:
    For being able to open files with my extension, I had to create a registry in
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts,
    including the subkey of the program name in the subfolder OpenWithList
    and the subkey of the program id in the subfolder OpenWithProgIds.
    And for the program id I had to create another registry entry in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT,
    including the subfolders Shell, Open, and Command, where I placed the
    subkey of the directory of my program.
    I did all this with my installation program Inno Setup (www.jrsoftware.org). Here is
    the code I created with Inno Setup for recognizing my ".ac" extension:
    [Registry]
    Root: HKCU; Subkey: "Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.ac"; Flags: uninsdeletekeyifempty
    Root: HKCU; Subkey: "Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.ac\OpenWithList"; Flags: uninsdeletekeyifempty
    Root: HKCU; Subkey: "Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.ac\OpenWithList"; ValueType: string; ValueName: "a"; ValueData: "Ananya.exe"; Flags: uninsdeletekey
    Root: HKCU; Subkey: "Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.ac\OpenWithProgIds"; Flags: uninsdeletekeyifempty
    Root: HKCU; Subkey: "Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.ac\OpenWithProgIds"; ValueType: binary; ValueName: "AnanyaCurves"; Flags: uninsdeletekey
    Root: HKCR; Subkey: "AnanyaCurves"; Flags: uninsdeletekey
    Root: HKCR; Subkey: "AnanyaCurves"; ValueType: string; ValueData: "AnanyaCurves"; Flags: uninsdeletekey
    Root: HKCR; Subkey: "AnanyaCurves\Shell"; Flags: uninsdeletekey
    Root: HKCR; Subkey: "AnanyaCurves\Shell"; ValueType: string; Flags: uninsdeletekey
    Root: HKCR; Subkey: "AnanyaCurves\Shell\Open"; Flags: uninsdeletekey
    Root: HKCR; Subkey: "AnanyaCurves\Shell\Open"; ValueType: string; Flags: uninsdeletekey
    Root: HKCR; Subkey: "AnanyaCurves\Shell\Open\Command"; Flags: uninsdeletekey
    Root: HKCR; Subkey: "AnanyaCurves\Shell\Open\Command"; ValueType: string; ValueData: """C:\Program Files\AnanyaCurves\Ananya.exe""""%1"""; Flags: uninsdeletekey
    Now my program even shows up in the Recommended Programs!
    And, by the way, this only worked if I put my extension key in
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts.
    It did not work if I tried to put my extension key in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.

  • Help with Note cards?? I thought I could do them with this program...

    Help! I purchased Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 back in September, but due to computer problems and working on other projects, I just got started using it. Or at least I'm trying to!
    My main (read: pretty well ONLY) reason for purchasing was that I thought I could make note cards (photo on front, folded, like a blank card, but with one of my photos on the front) for personal use and Christmas gift for my aunt who writes a lot of notes. I really wanted to create a special gift for her, as well as unique cards for my own use.
    But when I open the program and click "Create" all I see is Greeting Cards! And when I click on it, I don't see anything like what I want to create! Help! Is there any way to create this type of card with this program? Or at least close? I would really appreciate ANY and ALL help!!!
    Thanks!

    Hi,
    You can try going to finder, hitting CMD + F and below search this mac, you should see kind. You can try switching that contents and the second option to documents.

  • Cannot start mac office 2011, prompt "this identity cannot be opened  with this version of outlook

    cool, need help on this.. just installed the software but the message prompt me " This identity cannot be opened with this version of Outlook". i using Macbook and version Mac OS X 10.7.3

    Hi,
    This issue occurs as the current navigation pane in Outlook is not working properly. We can try to use the command "Outlook.exe /resetnavpane" to clear and regenerate the navigation pane for the current Outlook profile:
    Press Win + R and type “outlook.exe /resetnavpane” in the blank box, then press Enter.
    We can also create a new profile to test if this issue persists:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/829918/en-us
    If there's no issue with the new profile, simply delete the old one.

  • "Always open with" (this application) doesn't work

    I'm fighting to set Photoshop as the default application to open TIFF files. The present persistent default is Preview. In theory, I should right-click on a TIFF file, choose Open with > Other..., then select Photoshop and check "Always open with" checkbox.
    It doesn't work. The file is opened in Photoshop, but after I close the file and double-click THE SAME FILE in Finder, my Mac happily launches Preview again.

    Hi,
    Try the other way,
    1. Right click on the tiff file, choose 'Get Info'.
    2. In the get info window choose 'Photoshop' for 'Open with'.
    3. Click the 'Change All...' button.
    This might work.

  • This month I downloaded the newest version of PAGES.  Now when I try to open the documents made with this program it says "You need a newer version of PAGES to open this document."  I go to the App Store and says it has downloaded.  What to do?

    This month I downloaded the newest version of PAGES.  The documents I have typed using this App will now not open and the message says-"You need a newer version of PAGES to open this document.  Could anyone help me with this please.  Thanks.

    You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
    Pages 5.2.2 is in your Applications folder.
    Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
    You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
    Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
    Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
    Older versions of Pages 5 can not open files from later versions of Pages 5.
    Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
    Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened in a newer version of Pages is also converted to Pages 5 files.
    All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
    Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
    Apple has removed over 110 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:
    http://www.freeforum101.com/iworktipsntrick/viewforum.php?f=22&sid=3527487677f0c 6fa05b6297cd00f8eb9&mforum=iworktipsntrick
    You can add the icon of the missing Pages on your Dock or open Pages from the Apple menu > Recent Items list.
    Or you can archive Pages 5 so that it doesn't automatically open.
    If you are unhappy about this review/rate Pages 5 in the App Store.

  • New to Java and need help with this program..please!

    I'd really appreciate any helpful comments about this program assignment that I have to turn in a week from Friday. I'm taking a class one night a week and completely new to Java. I'd ask my professor for help, but we can't call him during the week and he never answers e-mails. He didn't tell us how to call from other classes yet, and I just can't get the darn thing to do what I want it to do!
    The assignment requirements are:
    1. Change a card game application that draws two cards
    and the higher card wins, to a Blackjack application
    2. Include a new class called Hand
    3. The Hand class should record the number of draws
    4. The application should prompt for a number of draws
    5. The game is played against the Dealer
    6. The dealer always draws a card if the dealer's hand total is <= 17
    7. Prompt the player after each hand if he wants to quit
    8. Display the total games won by the dealer and total and the total games wond by the player after each hand
    9. Display all of the dealer's and player's cards at the
    end of each hand
    10. Player has the option of drawing an additional card after the first two cards
    11. The Ace can have a value of 11 or 1
    (Even though it's not called for in the requirements, I would like to be able to let the Ace have a value of 1 or an 11)
    The following is my code with some comments about a few things that are driving me nuts:

    Thank you so much for offering to help me with this Jamie! When I tried to call change value using:
    Card dealer = (d.changeValue());
    I get an error message saying:
    Incompatible types found: int
    required: Card
    I had my weekly class last night and the professor cleared up a few things for me, but I've not had time to make all of the necessary changes. I did find out how toString worked, so that's one question out of the way, and he gave us a lot of information for adding another class to generate random numbers.
    Again, thank you so much. I really want to learn this but I'm feeling so stupid right now. Any help you can give me about the above error message would be appreciated.

  • I need help with this program ( Calculating Pi using random numbers)

    hi
    please understand that I am not trying to ask anymore to do this hw for me. I am new to java and working on the assignment. below is the specification of this program:
    Calculate PI using Random Numbers
    In geometry the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter is known as . The value of can be estimated from an infinite series of the form:
     / 4 = 1 - (1/3) + (1/5) - (1/7) + (1/9) - (1/11) + ...
    There is another novel approach to calculate . Imagine that you have a dart board that is 2 units square. It inscribes a circle of unit radius. The center of the circle coincides with the center of the square. Now imagine that you throw darts at that dart board randomly. Then the ratio of the number of darts that fall within the circle to the total number of darts thrown is the same as the ratio of the area of the circle to the area of the square dart board. The area of a circle with unit radius is just square unit. The area of the dart board is 4 square units. The ratio of the area of the circle to the area of the square is / 4.
    To simuluate the throwing of darts we will use a random number generator. The Math class has a random() method that can be used. This method returns random numbers between 0.0 (inclusive) to 1.0 (exclusive). There is an even better random number generator that is provided the Random class. We will first create a Random object called randomGen. This random number generator needs a seed to get started. We will read the time from the System clock and use that as our seed.
    Random randomGen = new Random ( System.currentTimeMillis() );
    Imagine that the square dart board has a coordinate system attached to it. The upper right corner has coordinates ( 1.0, 1.0) and the lower left corner has coordinates ( -1.0, -1.0 ). It has sides that are 2 units long and its center (as well as the center of the inscribed circle) is at the origin.
    A random point inside the dart board can be specified by its x and y coordinates. These values are generated using the random number generator. There is a method nextDouble() that will return a double between 0.0 (inclusive) and 1.0 (exclusive). But we need random numbers between -1.0 and +1.0. The way we achieve that is:
    double xPos = (randomGen.nextDouble()) * 2 - 1.0;
    double yPos = (randomGen.nextDouble()) * 2 - 1.0;
    To determine if a point is inside the circle its distance from the center of the circle must be less than the radius of the circle. The distance of a point with coordinates ( xPos, yPos ) from the center is Math.sqrt ( xPos * xPos + yPos * yPos ). The radius of the circle is 1 unit.
    The class that you will be writing will be called CalculatePI. It will have the following structure:
    import java.util.*;
    public class CalculatePI
    public static boolean isInside ( double xPos, double yPos )
    public static double computePI ( int numThrows )
    public static void main ( String[] args )
    In your method main() you want to experiment and see if the accuracy of PI increases with the number of throws on the dartboard. You will compare your result with the value given by Math.PI. The quantity Difference in the output is your calculated value of PI minus Math.PI. Use the following number of throws to run your experiment - 100, 1000, 10,000, and 100,000. You will call the method computePI() with these numbers as input parameters. Your output will be of the following form:
    Computation of PI using Random Numbers
    Number of throws = 100, Computed PI = ..., Difference = ...
    Number of throws = 1000, Computed PI = ..., Difference = ...
    Number of throws = 10000, Computed PI = ..., Difference = ...
    Number of throws = 100000, Computed PI = ..., Difference = ...
    * Difference = Computed PI - Math.PI
    In the method computePI() you will simulate the throw of a dart by generating random numbers for the x and y coordinates. You will call the method isInside() to determine if the point is inside the circle or not. This you will do as many times as specified by the number of throws. You will keep a count of the number of times a dart landed inside the circle. That figure divided by the total number of throws is the ratio / 4. The method computePI() will return the computed value of PI.
    and below is what i have so far:
    import java.util.*;
    public class CalculatePI
      public static boolean isInside ( double xPos, double yPos )
         double distance = Math.sqrt( xPos * xPos + yPos * yPos );
      public static double computePI ( int numThrows )
        Random randomGen = new Random ( System.currentTimeMillis() );
        double xPos = (randomGen.nextDouble()) * 2 - 1.0;
        double yPos = (randomGen.nextDouble()) * 2 - 1.0;
        int hits = 0;
        int darts = 0;
        int i = 0;
        int areaSquare = 4 ;
        while (i <= numThrows)
            if (distance< 1)
                hits = hits + 1;
            if (distance <= areaSquare)
                darts = darts + 1;
            double PI = 4 * ( hits / darts );
            i = i+1;
      public static void main ( String[] args )
        Scanner sc = new Scanner (System.in);
        System.out.print ("Enter number of throws:");
        int numThrows = sc.nextInt();
        double Difference = PI - Math.PI;
        System.out.println ("Number of throws = " + numThrows + ", Computed PI = " + PI + ", Difference = " + difference );
    }when I tried to compile it says "cannot find variable 'distance' " in the while loop. but i thought i already declare that variable in the above method. Please give me some ideas to solve this problem and please check my program to see if there is any other mistakes.
    Thanks a lot.

    You've declared a local variable, distance, in the method isInside(). The scope of this variable is limited to the method in which it is declared. There is no declaration for distance in computePI() and that is why the compiler gives you an error.
    I won't check your entire program but I did notice that isInside() is declared to be a boolean method but doesn't return anything, let alone a boolean value. In fact, it doesn't even compute a boolean value.

  • Delphi Forums Messages no longer loads - get "it's an octet stream - save or open with another program"???

    Just stopped working today after my Windows 7 laptop automatically updated last night. This site works fine (still!) in IE on this machine.

    application/octet-stream is a generic content (MIME) type. Firefox will always show the "open with" download dialog if a server sends a file with such a MIME type. You shouldn't get that MIME type with every web page that you open. You may have security software (firewall) that has changed the original content type.
    A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox without informing you about that, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.<br />
    Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process.<br />

  • The bookmarks simply don't show in the sidebar. What is with this program, I thought it was supposed to be a good one. The bookmarks are totally unintuitive. How do you get any of your bookmarks to show?

    I thought this program was supposed to be so great. The bookmarks are totally unintuitive. I tried to import favorites from Explorer, can only see them if I bring down the menu from the top and select imported bookmarks. When I select Organize bookmarks, it is empty. No bookmarks show at all on the left. Does this sidebar actually work? Can you bring your imported bookmarks onto the sidebar? Can you organize it the way you want in the order you want to see them, as you can in Explorer? I am no big fan of Exploroer, which is why I am trying Firefox, but if bookmarks cannot be easily used, the program is worthless. Any herlp would be appreciated.

    Thanks - I had same problem with newly-imported Bookmarks from IE which didn't show in the sidebar. I have opened the Bookmarks Menu and all is OK.
