Arranging groups of photos in aperture 2.1 browser

Hi, I'm having trouble reordering groups of photos. According to the getting started manual (page 75) you can select a group of photos in the aperture browser, and drag them within the browser to change the order of the photos. Doing that with individual photos works but when I try with more than one I never get the green bar that lets me drop the photos into the new location. Am I missing something? Clues? Thanks!

Hi, Peter
It works. Select the photos regardless of order and click on the first photo and drag to the new location. The sort order will change to "Custom" and Aperture will remember the new order regardless if you later decide to sort by date...

  • How can I delete captions from a group of photos? Aperture 3.3

Is it possible to do it after having selected them all? I have 600 of them and I wouldn't like to do it one by one...
    Is that possible?
    Luca

    Hi Luca,
Why? There are three flowers in the images, so "Fiori Fiori Fiori" is perfect!      sorry, couldn't resist - just kidding - forgive me!
Now: I made the same mistake myself once. This usually happens, if you use "append" in the Batch Change "Add Metadata from:" options: Set it to "Replace".

  • Quickly zoom photos in Aperture import or browse modes

When viewing photos in the Browser/grid layout of Aperture, or during import from a camera, is there a way to quickly zoom the photo similar to "quick look" in Finder?
I'm not looking to increase the size of ALL thumbnails, nor do I want to spent time loading the image into the editor - just trying to see if I can do a quick zoom on a single photo as I browse through a bunch of thumbnails to see its details in a larger size to see whether it's the photo I'm looking for.
    thanks!!
    Mark

And, fwiw, note that there is no "editor (mode)" in Aperture. There are several tools to control how your images are presented to you (size, layout, number, distribution across two screens, etc.) -- all of them feature live editing. This is the default.
The "non-edit" mode in Aperture is called Quick Preview. Use the "p" key to toggle this on and off. When on (in Quick Preview mode), Aperture will load only your previews (and all adjustments are disabled). If you are being held back from doing non-editing administrative tasks while waiting for images to load ("Loading" pops up on screen), Quick Preview will do as much to eliminate the delay as anything.
You control the size of your Previews via Aperture Preferences. There are many things which go into making a good choice here, but either "half size" or "fit within {the longest dimension of any of your monitors}", with compression set to 8 or 9, is a good place to start.
Zooming of images while setting up an import seemed to be disabled when the card is in the camera. If you have a card reader, or transfer the images to disk and then import, you should be able to zoom from the import dialog.

  • Batch Enhancing for a group of photos

    Hi,
I just took over 100 photos that all need to be enhanced similarly. I was going to use the auto-enhance feature on each one. Is there a way to use this feature on a group of photos other than going through each one individually?
    Thanks

    Valid concerns.

but wont lift and stamp lift the changes done to that photo only and so it will make the same adjustments for every photo to be the "auto enhanced" settings of photo 1, which may not be the best for photo 2?
No. Lift & Stamp of "Exposure→Default Adjustment" from a Version which has been auto-adjusted using the Exposure brick will cause the stamped Version to be auto-adjusted. This is easily tested (auto-adjust, lift, select another Version, stamp, compare the values in the Exposure brick to make sure the stamp is relative not absolute, auto-adjust the stamped Version and see if the Exposure values are changed).
I do not want to auto-enhance on import becasue I want the master RAW files to remain intact so that I can use them for detailed editing in photoshop, but when I am doing samples I want to just use a quick edited version like the auto enhance.
Raw is raw. It is not an image format, it is a data format. What you see in Aperture is an image format file which Aperture creates from your raw files. You should test this as well: import two images (helpful if they are poorly exposed) and auto-enhance them as part of the import. Select them after import and "reset all adjustments". Tell us what you find out.
I am 98% certain that the processing you tell Aperture to do on import is done as a Version of the raw file.

  • Cannot arrange/sort libraries manually in Aperture 3.1.3

    Hi,
I cannot arrange/sort libraries manually in Aperture 3.1.3. In the Library pane I tried to drag and drop the libraries to keep them manually arranged, having selected "Manual" in the folder and general sorting options for libraries. The weird thing is it seems like I can move a library to some positions, but not all! Any suggestion?
    Thanks,
    Nic

Hi Nic.  We're going to need some clarification of terms prior to resolving your issue.  Aperture can load and show you only one Library at a time.  What shows on the Library tab of the Inspector are all of the containers in your Library.  There are two top-level containers by default.  One is named after your Library, and contains the default Projects, Photos, Faces, Places, Flagged, & Trash.  The other is named "PROJECTS & ALBUMS".  It comes with a few default containers as well, and is where Aperture creates and stores all the containers you create.
Each of the different container types is identified by an icon.
Could you repost your question specifying the container types?

  • When importing iPad photos into Aperture, I cannot import into an existing album, only create a new project.

I dont want to create a new project for every group of photos being brought over from my iPad. My iPhone worked perfectly. I was able to choose which project/album I could import into, why would the iPad, running the same iOS, be any different?

    Hi Dave,
Welcome to the user-support Aperture discussion forum.
You would probably benefit from reading Kirby's introduction: [http://discussions.apple.com/messageview.jspa?messageID=13124533&stqc=true]
Is there any way to simply import photos into those albums without having to create all of those annoying projects?
That's a loaded question. It's not "yes or no" according to exactly how you asked it.
You do not have to create a new project for each import, but every picture lives in exactly 1 project. You can then point to any photo from any number of albums. You cannot put a photo directly into an album because an album does not contain photos, it only contains "pointers" to photos.
So, you, as the user, have the ability to put your imports into an existing project. Why are you creating a new project every time?

  • How does Apple TV sort photos from Aperture?

I have arranged a set of photos in Aperture in a Project.
When I go to show these on the Apple TV, they appear randomly and not in the order that I have them in the Aperture Project.
How does Apple TV sort the photos that it reads from my Aperture project?
If I understand how it handles this, I can adjust the metadata to insure it shows as I want.
I look forward to hearing back from folks about how this works.
    Thanks.

I figured it out.  It is by the date and time code on the picture.

  • I am making a calendar in iPhoto, picking photos from a folder, let's call it "2011 Pics," in iPhoto. After arranging all the photos and captions I decided I wanted to insert a new photo -- one that was not in "2011 Pics." So I inserted it into the folder

Add new photo to existing calendar folder in iPhoto
I am making a calendar in iPhoto, picking photos from a folder, let's call it "2011 Pics," in iPhoto. After arranging all the photos and captions I decided I wanted to insert a new photo -- one that was not in "2011 Pics." So I inserted it into the folder, but the picture does not show up on the scrolling menu of pictures at the left of the calendar-making page. This happened last year and in frustration I started all over again. But surely there is a way to add a new picture to a calendar that is already laid out.

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

  • Can not sync all photos in Aperture into Iphone 5

I can not sync all photos in Aperture into Iphone 5. It always can sync some photos into 5. Then finish and prompts: "itunes can not synchronize (other)thousands of projects, and see more information in itunes".  That means most of my photos can not seen on Iphone 5, it seems just can't import to 5. Is that the problem of Iphone or the pictures in Aperture, or even just because lack of sufficient space?

    Solved here...

  • Apple tv 2 slow to update new photos from aperture (I mean hours)

    Hi....
I have a large photo library within aperture 3.1.2, and I have an apple TV 2 that I use for casual browsing of the library.
The issue that I have is that when I add new photos to aperture, it can take a day or more until they show up in apple tvs photos.
Its almost as if apple tv is looking at an older version of my aperture library.
I have done a software update in the mac that serves apple tv, and also, ensured that apple tv is up to date. I've tried closing itunes, aperture, logged off, log on, rebooted apple tv 2 (by unplagging)- to no avail, restarted itunes, aperture, apple tv etc etc.
I just dont seem to be able to say to apple tv 2 the equivalent of "hey, go an refresh your view of aperture, there are new photos in there "
This is really frustrating, because the photos that i want to look at the most, are typically those that I have just taken.
Its really weird. As an other example, if i make a new smart album in aperture say "photos from last couple of days", with the obvious smart album selection criteria, then this too does not appear in apple tv 2 until a few hours later.
This smart album works as expected in aperture- no problems.
They will turn up later, but apparently with no rhyme or reason as to the timing.
I think its down to apple TV storing an older version of metadata for the aperture library.
I could understand it if I had no photos at all coming across, or if only photos with previews that come across, but no, it doesnt appear to be any setting such as that, becuase they will come over, eventually.
This appears to be a big bug- New photos cant be shown on apple TV for a day or two - grrrrrr.
Im pulling my hair out with it.
    Any help really appreciated

Yes, I have the same issue also.
It look like only the last import is missing somehow.
For example, yesterday I import photos from DC and iPhone, and put them in one event.
Only the DC part shown up, and iPhone photo are missing.
If I use "Last 12 month" section in Apple TV and jump to bottom, you can see some empty squares, and not viewable. Somehow it is not updated.

  • Multiple copies of one photo in Aperture

    Hi,
I have just bought Aperture, and I'm dying to get started. However, a very basic thing annoys me quite a lot. I would like to make an Album with photos I can perform experiments on, but no matter what I do, the changes also apply to the "originals" in the Event from which they were taken.
Isn't there an easy way to have multiple copies of the same photo in Aperture? I guess the solution must be simple, but I just can't figure it out.
    Thanks,
    Michael Knudsen

    Michael,
Either use the Command to Duplicate Version, or New Version from Master depending upon whether your experiment needs to start with the latest edited version, or from the scratch position of the Master. Then you can either Remove the original version from an Album if already there, or move the new version it to a new Album as desired.

  • Incorrect Photo Orientation - Aperture 3 to Apple TV 2

About a year ago I imported my iPhoto library of about 23,000 photos to Aperture 3.  The iPhoto library had some small corruptions in it and I was hoping the more robust nature of Aperture 3 would fix these, but the import made the corruption issues significantly worse.  Old Events from iPhoto (now Projects in Aperture 3) were randomly split up all over the place, duplicates of many photos appeared and many photos seemed to have lost the EXIF(?) data indicating which way photos were taken (landscape or portrait mode). As a result of the last problem many photos were on their side or upside down.  Applecare were no use at all, claimed they had never heard of such a problem and had no idea how to solve these issues.
After laboriously fixing most of the problems by hand over the past year, all the photos in my Aperture 3 library (now around 25,000 photos), display the correct way up.
However, I still have one problem I can't fix.  When Apple TV picks the photos up from Aperture (on my iMac), via my WiFi network, it displays around 20% of them on their sides rather than the correct way up.  Rebooting everything multiple times hasn't fixed it. My guess is the Apple TV is reading the corrupted EXIF data associated with these photos, and ignoring their orientation as they appear (after manual correction), in Aperture.
Does anyone have a fix or any ideas please?

I believe that iTunes/Aperture keeps a cache for the photos shared with AppleTV. Those need to be updated. If you can figure out where the cache is and delete it, iTunes/Aperture should regenerate it in the correct orientation. Unfortunately I don't have the time now to figure out where it is.

  • I can no longer drag photos in Aperture (within a project, between projects

I find that suddenly I cannot drag photos in Aperture.  In other words, I cannot MOVE a photo at all, whether within a project or between projects and albums, &c.  Not only this, but I cannot copy & paste either.  I can still export photos, though.
I noticed this first a couple of hours ago when attempting to attach a photo into an email using the Mail application.  It wouldn't budge.  I thought it might have been a problem with the Mail program but no, it appears to be in Aperture because I then tried to drag the photo directly from Aperture into the email (which I've been doing for years).
I've done a rebuild and all that, yet the problem remains.
Any suggestions as to what I might do other than export the whole library to Lightroom and start learning all over again?

    Can you confirm:
    - that this is true for many Images?  Try different Images in several Projects.  If possible, try with an Image you had been able to drag-and-drop into Mail in the past.
    - that you can't drag from a Project to an Album.
    - that the Image you can't drag-and-drop has a Preview?  ("Photos➞Update Preview")
What do you mean us to understand with the "and all that" part of "I've done a rebuild and all that, yet the problem remains"?
