Array Casting in java

Hi,
I am new to java.Last day Can I cast an arrays in java?For example casting an Object array to a String array or an integer array to a long one.If yes, then what are the rules and restrictions for casting arrays.I tried to google it, but I could not find any useful material.Could any one give me some links where I can get some useful material,books,mock tests etc. regarding preparation for SCJP 1.6?.Please help.
Thanks in advance

This is the Berkeley DB, Java Edition forum, and you should post only post questions about that product here. I think you may be looking for basic Java language information, and there are many other websites that can give you that information.

    ps1 = am.getOADBTransaction().getJdbcConnection().prepareStatement("SELECT -------");
    ResultSet rs2 = ps1.executeQuery();
    while (rs2.next()) {

    OAViewObject viewObj = (OAViewObject)am.findViewObject("simpleVO");
    String currSchDate = (String)viewObj.getCurrentRow().getAttribute("iDate");
    java.text.SimpleDateFormat dtFormat = new java.text.SimpleDateFormat ("MM/dd/yyyy");
    StringBuilder date = new StringBuilder(dtFormat.format(currSchDate));
    Then am comparing the values like below..
    if (schDate.equals(date)) {
    String outParamValue = "";

    Instead of :
    String currSchDate = (String)viewObj.getCurrentRow().getAttribute("iDate");Try
    String currSchDate = viewObj.getCurrentRow().getAttribute("iDate").toString();

  • Java 7 update 51 cause the following error: java.util.HashMap cannot be cast to java.awt.RenderingHints

    Since I installed Java 7 update 51 accessing the EMC VNX Unisphere Console cause the following error: java.util.HashMap cannot be cast to java.awt.RenderingHints.
    I rolled back to Apple Java 1.6 -005 now I am getting the following error: plug-in failure.
    I think this is cused by the fact that the EMC console application has been written for java 7 and not java 6. Has anybody faced and solved the "java.util.HashMap cannot be cast to java.awt.RenderingHints." error ?

    Hi Yaakov,
    The error is thrown from the  eclipselink.jar:2.5.1 which is a JPA provider .
    Is the above jar bundled in the Oracle Product you are working upon or was this downloaded from external site ?
    If the jar is bundled with the Oracle Product, go ahead a log a SR with Oracle Support with Toplink product group to drill down on the issue, as the issue is happening internally or thrown by the Eclipselink implementation and we've no control....
    Hope it helps!!
    Thanks,

  • Get / Cast a Java Object

    Does anybody know how to get (or Cast) a Java Object returned from a Java method call ?
    Example:
    <cfset someList = object1.method1(someString, JavaCast("float",someNumber),...)>
    This method returns a list of Java object of type "Object2". ie. it returns List<Object2>
    Now I attempted to loop thru each objects from the returned list, and invoke some method on them, using code similar to below,
    <cfset var="#someList[index]#"/>
    but ColdFusion does not seem to understand the object "var" as Java "Object2". Is there any way I can cast the "var" to "Object2"?
    Thanks in advance.
    Xiaoling

    "var" is a reserved keyword! You can initialize variables with "var" in the beginning of a component, but do not use it as a variables name:
    <cfset var someVar = "#someList[index]#">

    Ok, thanks. So how do i determine where we are at since I have this "465"? How does that relate to a particular patch?
    Logger@9214443 3.5.3/465I believe, you are on 3.5.3 unpatched, and if I correctly remember, after applying the 3.5.3 patch 4 it should like like 3.5.3p4/... or 3.5.3.4/... (don't remember which one)... You would have to download that patch from your Oracle Support website (whichever you use), and apply the patch to a pristine extracted directory of 3.5.3 according to instructions in the patch zip.
    Starting with a recent version no more manual patching is necessary and you can download full distributions of patched versions from Oracle Support, but I don't think that applies to 3.5.3, yet (although it is possible that they recreated patch artifacts like that for earlir versions).
    If you do not have a support contract then you cannot download a patch or patched versions. You can only download a new full release which always has any previously released patches incorporated, though 3.5.3 is the last 3.5 full release if I correctly remember... and 3.6 comes with code incompatibilities at a few places so it is not a drop-in replacement...

  • About array cast.

    dear all
    could someone tell me what's wrong with the following codes?
    Object objarr[]
    = {new Integer(1), new Integer(2)};
    Integer[] intarr = (Integer [])objarr;
    it throws out a java.lang.ClassCastException when i ran it. but doesn't the objarr actually represents a Integer array?
    regards
    Yang Liu

    In Java, all objects are by default of Object type. That means an Integer object is of Object type. Similarly a String object is of Object type.
    But if I give you an object of type Object, can u absolutely say whether it is an Integer or a String (ofcourse assuming u don't use relection etc) ? No you cannot..
    Simlarly when you have a Object array, you can put anything into that array, a String or an Integer etc. So u cannot be sure that an Object array always contains only Integer... That is y u get the class cast exception.....
    Ofcourse, this is just the inheritance concept... A BMW is a type of car.. but a car needn't be a type of BMW... it could be a Toyota instead or someting else...
    Integer[] intarr = {new Integer(1), new Integer(2)};
    Object[] objarr = (Object[]) intarr;
    the above code works well.. since all Integer (s) are of Object type in Java....
    Hope this helps

  • Describe non-generic array cast in JLS3 as being unchecked

    This method :
        static <T, U extends T> U[] cast(T[] a) { return (U[]) a; }will generate the warning: [unchecked] unchecked cast, found: T[], required: U[].
    And it should. Wouldn't it be appropriate if
        static Object[] cast(String[] a) { return (String[]) a; }would produce the same warning?
    If you do that, you could translate the declaration
      T[] at = new T[255]
      String[] as = new String[255]into
    Array<T> at = Array.<T>newInstance(255);
    Array<String> as = Array.<String>newInstance(String.class, 255);where java.lang.reflect.Array would be something like
    package java.lang.reflect.Array;
    public final class Array<T> implements Iterable<T> {
        public final int length;
        private Type memberType;
        private Array(Type memberType, int length) {
            this.memberType = memberType;
            this.length = length;
        public native T getMember(int i);
        public native void setMember(int i, T member);
        public native java.util.Iterator<T> iterator();
       public static <U> Array<U> newInstance(int length) {
           return new Array<U>(null, length);
       public static <U> Array<U> newInstance(Class<U> memberClass, int length) {
           return new Array<U>(memberClass, length);

    Sorry, I created a bad example. It should have been:
        static <T, U extends T> T[] cast(U[] a) { return (T[]) a; }and
        static Object[] cast(String[] a) { return (Object[]) a; }The point is that an array of String is different from an array of Object and casts between them is unsafe. Throwing an ArrayStoreException if the wrong type is assigned is just a workaround for lack generic types in pre-Tiger Java. Now that we will have generics, I think it would be appropriate if Java arrays would be treated as proper generic types. For those that are afraid of breaking backwards compatiblility, the erasure mechanism should be able to take care of that.

  • Array Cast Question Puzzling me

    The question below puzzles me. The answer states that the result is a class cast exception because o1 is an int [] [] not a int []
    But I thought the point of line 7 is to say "I know it is a 2D array but I want to cast it to a 1D array - I know I am losing precision here".
    Given:
    1. class Dims {
    2. public static void main(String[] args) {
    3. int[][] a = {{1,2,}, {3,4}};
    4. int[] b = (int[]) a[1];
    5. Object o1 = a;
    6. int[][] a2 = (int[][]) o1;
    7. int[] b2 = (int[]) o1;
    8. System.out.println(b[1]);
    9. } }
    What is the result?
    A. 2
    B. 4
    C. An exception is thrown at runtime
    D. Compilation fails due to an error on line 4.
    E. Compilation fails due to an error on line 5.
    F. Compilation fails due to an error on line 6.
    G. Compilation fails due to an error on line 7.
    Answer:
    3 C is correct. A ClassCastException is thrown at line 7 because o1 refers to an int[][]
    not an int[]. If line 7 was removed, the output would be 4.
    &#730; A, B, D, E, F, and G are incorrect based on the above. (Objective 1.3)

    While you could approximate casting a 2D array to a 1D array in C/C++ by just grabbing a pointer to your first array and then overrunning array bounds (relying on how C/C++ allocates 2D arrays and the lack of bounds checking), Java's strong typing and bounds checking makes this impossible.
    If you want to do something similar in Java, you will need to create a new 1D array of the proper size and copy the elements stored in your 2D array into this new array. That being said, a database is almost guaranteed to be a better solution.

  • Array casting: ClassCastException

    import java.util.Vector;
    public class X
    public static void main(String args[])
         //first part
    String [] array = {"1","2", "3"};
    Object [] objs = array;
    array = (String[])objs;
    for( int i =0 ; i < array.length; i++)
    System.out.println(array);
         //second part
    Vector v = new Vector();
    v.add("1");
    v.add("2");
    v.add("3");
    objs = v.toArray();
    array = (String[])objs;
    for( int i =0 ; i < array.length; i++)
    System.out.println(array[i]);
    Why does the first part work properly but the second cause ClassCastException? Even if an array was instantiated as Object[] in toArray method casting MUST be ok. I work with an instances in array but not with array. An array only contains an objects I work with. It's only technical structure! Why does it cause ClassCastException?

    >
    Yes. I know it. The point is WHY it was done in this
    way? What can I do with the type of array? NONE. The
    actual information is CONTAINED in array. So array
    is only technical structure. I can't derive it, it has
    no virtual mechanisms. The actual objects I need are
    stored in array. The type of them is important. It
    looks like miss of language structure.
    The basic question here is a fundamental part of polymorphism - you cannot cast an Object into one that it is not.
    Object a = new Object();
    String b = (String) a;That code will also compile, but it is just as incorrect as your code. The problem is that "a" will never be a String. There may be ways to convert it into a String, but the object a will always be of type "Object" and never extend String, so it cannot be cast.
    Similarly, an array of type Object[] will always be of type Object[]. It cannot be cast to String[], because it will never have String[] as a superclass, if you will. The rules for working with arrays are exactly the same as working with the object which is the base type of the array.
    In order to be able to do a cast from Object[] to String[], there would have to be a runtime check which would ensure that every element in the Object[] was, in fact, a String. But the cast check in the compiler is just looking up the extends and implements chains. If you want to implement a runtime cast, Java basically leaves that up to you.
    And as has been mentioned, they do let you provide the array to be used as well.

  • Could not type cast in java embedding

    DocumentBuilderFactory dbf = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance();
    DocumentBuilder db = dbf.newDocumentBuilder();
    org.xml.sax.InputSource in = (org.xml.sax.InputSource) getVariableData("Invoke_1_getRoutingAndFrameJumpers_OutputVariable","getRoutingAndFrameJumpersResponse");
    Document doc = db.parse(in);
    In the above code I am trying to type cast the variable getRoutingAndFrameJumpersResponse into org.xml.sax.InputSource so that i can parse.
    I am not getting any error during compilation
    but I am unable to type cast some run time error is coming in the line were I am type casting but I am not able to see the runtime error.
    How can I see the runtime error in java embedding, how to type cast a variable into xml so that I can parse it.

    Hi Arun,
    Could you try using the bpelx:rename extension in an assign activity enables a BPEL process to rename an element through use of XSD type casting.
    <bpel:assign>
    <bpelx:rename elementTo="QName1"? typeCastTo="QName2"?>
    <bpelx:target variable="ncname" part="ncname"? query="xpath_str" />
    </bpelx:rename>
    </bpel:assign>
    Cheers
    A

  • Any way to search for casts in java source code?

    Anyone know of a decent way to search your java source files to find all the casts?
    I ended up doing a simple text search for
         " = ("(quote marks not included) which works for my code because I am strict about writing my casts with spaces like
         String s = (String) iterator.next();Unfortunately, the above search has all kinds of problems with both false positives and negatives. It picks up lots of irrelevant lines like
         int index = (number > 0) ? 0 : 1;as well as misses casts that appear nested inside expressions like
         ((String) iter.next()).charAt(...)I suppose that one could do a regular expression search for any pair of open and close parens which bound non-blank text, but that would pick up even more non-cast expressions in typical java code.
    I think that the only way to properly do this is to have a tool which understands java syntax.
    Anyone know of an IDE which will do this? Does IntelliJ or Netbeans support this kind of search?
    In case you are wondering why I am interested in this, it is because I am refactoring some code to fully use generics, and searching for casts is one source of identifying candidates for genericity.

I just opened IntelliJ, and going back to at least version 7.04 (maybe earlier) they have an inspection for "Redundant type cast".

    I would still be interested to know if there is a way to identify casts in general in your source, perhaps now four years later there is a way?The only solutions that I can think of are either a complicated regex search, or you must use some tool like an IDE that understand Java syntax and can determine if a cast is happening.

  • Need help with adding arrays to invoice.java please willing to pay?

    Using your Invoice class created in lab02, write a client program that allows the user to input three Invoice objects into an array of Invoice objects. After you have inputted all of the invoices, print a heading and then output all of the array elements (Invoice objects) by calling the method from your Invoice class that displays all of the data members on a single line using uniform field widths to insure that all Invoice objects will line up in column format (created in Lab04). At the end of the loop, display the calculated total retail value of all products entered in the proper currency format.
    Example of possible program execution:
    Part Number : WIDGET
    Part Description : A fictitious product
    Quantity : 100
    Price          : 19.95
    (etc.)
    Example of possible output
    Part Number          Part Description          Quantity          Price     Amount
    WIDGET          A fictitious product     100          19.95     199.95
    Hammer               9 pounds          10          5.00     50.00
    (etc.)
    Total Retail Value:                                   249.95

    i suck in java There are 2 possible reasons for this:
    1. you haven't studied
    2. you aren't cut out for programming

  • Can I do dynamic class cast with java SE1.4.2?

    Hi,
    I have some question on dynamic class cast.
    I'm using java SE1.4.2. Suppose I have a method :
    castObjectToSomething(Object o)
    Something s = (Something) o;
    However, I don't know what is the class to cast until runtime. How can I do a runtime class cast?
    I know that java 5.0 have a Class.cast() method which java1.4.2 does not have. But can I do the same stuff by using SE1.4.2?
    Thank You!!!!!
    oh_silly

    There is no sense in wanting to cast to a class that is only known at runtime. Because you can't do anything with such a class during runtime. Even though you could technically retrieve the class name, the method names and the parameter names, you could do nothing with this class as you don't know what it is doing. If you would know what it can do, you would know it also during compile time and then you would know the classname/interface name you want to cast to and can import it and use it reasonably.
    Tell us the requirement that you think you have and we will proof you that you don't need such a requirement.
