Artist, Album Artist, Sort Artist...

With all of the new tagging features I am a little confused. What I want to do is simple. For example on the Akon and Eminem song "Smack That," I want the artist to be displayed on my iPod as 'Akon, Eminem' but when I am scrolling through the lists of artist I want the song to be grouped with 'Akon', not as another artist. Is there any way to accomplish this?
TIA
Ross

I don't know if you can do it on your iPod yet, but on iTunes you could put the sort artist as "Akon" and the artist as "Akon, Eminem" and it should do exactly what you want. Not sure if Apple is ever going to transfer this to the iPod or not though.

Andrew, I know I am extremely late to the party but I too use Grid View.  I had the same problem that you had but have found this to work for me.  I used it and it is still holding as my default sorting even after switching between the Artist page and Grid View.
Once you are inside of the Artist page continue to click on the Album column until it shows Album by Artist/Year.
That will give you each album sorted by the year instead of it randomly sorting it for you each time you leave an Artist's page and then back again.
    Hope this helps.

  • Why are my albums not sorting properly on my iPhone?

I'm running iOS 6.0.2 on an iPhone 5 with iTunes Match and my albums are sorting in a strange fashion. The only connection: they're all David Bowie albums.
The problem is some, but not all, of my David Bowie albums are being sorted under the letter "P". Albums such as "Aladdin Sane", "Hunky Dory", "Black Tie White Noise", and "Diamond Dogs". 18 albums total are doing this and I can't find a connection other than the artist. I've tried renaming one of the albums to a single letter, such as "A" and that puts it under the "A"s. When I change it back to its original title, it returns to the "P"s.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what is causing this?
    Thanks,
    ~M

    That didn't work.
If I manually put songs on through iTunes it will show my Artist and Album but when I use my iTunes match it doesn't show it and also removes any I manually put.  It's all tied into iTunes Match.
I tried removing all my songs from the cloud and then uploading/matching again but that didn't work either.  It's still broke when I turn on iTunes Match on my phone.
The Songs are all messed up too, sorting wise.  I will have a random "B" song in the middle of the A's and then it goes back to showing the A's.
    Example
    A
    Almost Goodbye
    Almost Over
    B
    Baby
    A
    Almost Paradise
    Almost Perfect
It's just really messed up.  I would love to start over from scratch and wipe everything but that didn't work either so I'm not sure what to do.
    I'm paying for the service?!!?!?!?

  • Album Art Sorting incorrectly in Compilations/Albums iphone Music App listing/tab

Album Art Sorting incorrectly in Compilations/Albums iphone Music App listing/tab
Sounds like a mouthful, but basically im saying that I have a bunch of compilations that when displayed in itunes on my pc,
show the album art which is set for the first track. This is to be expected.
But when i upload the compilations to my iPhone 5, and i open up the Music app and select the compilations tab...
The same compilations show another album art that is actually associated with another track in the compilation.
When i looked for a pattern, i found that it would basically take the album art from the track in the compilation based on the artists name in reverse alphabetical order.
So if i had album art associated with every track in the compilation, normally it would show in the listing the album art of the first track... but now it was actually the album art of the artist name starting closest to the letter z.
I've tested this many times. very annoying. but to explain again...
If i have a compilation containing artists from Coldplay to Ziggy Marley... no matter where in the listing Ziggy Marley is listed first to last... it will display the Album art associated to Ziggy Marley in the List view for the Compilations or Albums tab in the Music app on an iPhone 5.
Normally you would expect it to show the album art associated with the first track in the listing as it does in Itunes so as to keep uniformity between what you upload in iTunes and what you see in the Music app on the iPhone.
THIS IS A BUG APPLE!!!... test it for yourselves... someone broke your db sorting in the new itunes. ITunes 11, with iPhone 5
    Please fix!
    Thank you kindly...

another note... when i select the album from the list (on the iphone, in the music app) and it slides over to show all tracks in the compilation...
it then shows the proper album art as it should.
Also, when i check cover flow it then shows another incorrect cover?

  • ITunes splits songs from the same album into several albums, all sort fields appear to match. Any suggestions on how to put them in one album?

iTunes sometimes splits songs from the same album into several albums, all sort fields appear to match. Any suggestions on how to return them to the proper album?

Generally all you need to do is fill in an appropriate Album Artist. For more details see my article on Grouping Tracks Into Albums, in particular the topic One album, too many covers.
N.B. Giving different things the same sort value (or indeed vice versa) tends to lead to trouble.

  • ALL PHOTOS album not sorting by date???

For some reason the ALL PHOTOS album is not sorting itself by date and time of when the photo was taken. They appear very random!
I don't know why this is happening. The VIDEOS album is sorting properly by date and time of when it was taken. The BURSTS album is sorting fine too.
It would be nice if there was an option to sort the ALL PHOTOS album by date. I know you can select the PHOTOS tab at the top and see photos sorted by date and time and place but I primarily use the ALL PHOTOS album and it just looks messy when it's not sorted properly. This was my go to in iPhoto and it was always sorted and images were easy to find.
Anyone know of any work arounds?
    Thanks in advance
    j

The FAVOURITES and PANOS albums also sort by date and time too. So all the albums sort by time and day except the ALL PHOTOS album! Seems very strange! What's even odder is that the date range listed at the top of the ALL PHOTOS album would suggest that they are sorted by date!
Apple I hope you SORT this out soon

  • Albums all sorted then suddenly get messed up

I have my photo albums manually sorted in iPhoto, just the way I want them to appear in my iPhone/iPad. Worked perfectly like this for 3 years. However, two weeks ago the order of the albums was just suddenly all jumbled up randomly. I painstakinginly re-ordered them back the way they were. Yesterday it did it again. WHY? Anyone?

    Greetings,
If the albums spontaneously changed that suggests perhaps an issue with the iPhoto Library itself (damage).
A few questions for you first:
__Do you maintain backups of your computer (Time Machine for example)? If so, you can go back in time before this issue occurred and restore your Library. If you don't have backups you should seriously consider it. Anyone that has information they care about on any computer should have a backup: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1553
__The albums that are changing, are they iPhoto Albums or are they MobileMe galleries (An album is a little blue book and a gallery is a cloud)
__Is your iPhoto Library being stored in the location specified by Apple (Your User > Pictures > iPhoto Library) or are you keeping it somewhere else?
    Try some basic fixes:
Ensure all your software is up to date (Apple Menu > Software Update).
Remove the following to the trash and restart the computer and try again:
    Home > Library > Caches > com.apple.iphoto
Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.iPhoto (There may be more than one. Remove them all.)
If the issue persists try rebuilding your iPhoto Library following this article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2638. Use the bottom 3 rebuild options.
You may still have to re-sort your albums at this point, but hopefully they won't magically change again.
Again, if you don't have a backup, I would highly recommend it.
    Hope that helps.

  • Track/album article sorting script

    Hi
Am sorting/tidying my iTunes library and exporting to a new external hard drive.
I am being a tad OCD about this....lol.
I have found scripts that are great and are helping but.....
I would like to sort using the full title including 'A' 'The' and so on for artist, track and album.
I can't find either a script app that would turn off aotosort or blank the relevant sibling field, I am hoping there is one.
(There is a scipt for windows).
My library is 100,000+ tracks compiled over the last few years so going through one by one would be extremely tedious.
    Many thanks
    Stephen

    Thank you.
I am aware of what iTunes is doing
and of the option of editing each the sibling sort fields.
I am doing that at the momement but it is extremely tedious and prone to error.
However there is a script for windows which overrides auotsort function.
I want to know if a script or app is available that would over ride autosort on a mac.
    Thanks
    Stephen

  • One Album But Sorted As Different Albums

I recently imported a cd that I bought into Itunes. The problem that Im having is that even though the artist may have some guest features on the album. It still sorts the album as one thats completely different. It makes cover flow look bad and everything else sloppy. Ive tried changing things in the INFO tab, and also in the SORTING tab. Ive removed track numbers placed them as a compilation and that work but now it shows Various Artis and all the songs or linked together. But now I have the Various Artist problem.

Not sure how removing track numbers can help here.
I think what you need to do is make sure that the Album Artist field is filled in with the same info on all of the tracks. Maybe fill it in with the primary artist or the name of the album instead of Various Artists.

  • Album track sorting

I just purchased an album from itunes for my 80GB - I have the whole album of 10 songs but two of the songs are with other artists. So now on my ipod I have the album minus two songs they are listed as other artists. When I play the album I want to hear the whole album, it is a pain having to select those two tracks individualy. Is there a way to move these into the album space.
    Thank You Guy,s
    Greym

in my experience, the default for iTunes was to list it by artist, then by album title, then by track number. Is yours not working this way?

  • Can albums be sorted by filename (not date)?

I have a set of portfolios, stored on a microSD card, that I would like to sort and display on the tablet by filename -- but the default is by file (creation) date and I can't find any Settings options to change that. Is there a way to do this on the tablet?

you will need a different gallery/album app from the play store

  • All Photos Album Incorrect Sort Order

When I view the album "All Photos" from iCloud.com my photos are sorted by date with the newest ones at the bottom. When I view "All Photos" within iOS or the OS X app, the sorting order isn't correct. Any ideas?
    Thanks!

I think this is an embarrassing thought-fail on Apple's part.
After removing good ways of sharing photos from one library to another, people end up having to get older pictures, or pictures loaded into a laptop while traveling, back onto our main Photos libraries though copying (edited) files over the network and re-add them. This create systematic discrepancies in date added and date taken.
When "All Photos" Panoramas", "Videos" and otherwise handy views can only be viewed by date added they add to the feeling of having to keep your photos in an exposed disorder.
If you think of a photo, do you think about when/where you took it or when/to what library you added the photo?
People think of the first, and machines (and now apparently Apple) intuitively think of the second..
But maybe I'm too harsh, and I have missed something. Can anybody see a good reason for focusing on date added rather than date taken?

  • Help? (Terence or Old Toad) repost: album manual sorting

Just in the last week, my kids albums won't maintain the manual sorting I have done. It keeps putting several (not all) of the more recent pictures at the very beginning of the album (sorted in order since the day they were born ~1000 pics in each album). I drag them back to the end and everything looks fine, quit and when I reopen iPhoto 11 the photos are back at the beginning. I have deleted and readded the pictures, deleted the preference file in my user library multiple times, rebooted, etc.
It is only affecting certain pictures, but not even the same ones in my different kid's albums. Frustrating...
    I can't figure this out!
I would love some help. Thanks!
P.S.-more info (my computer is the new iMac with the fastest processor).
I really don't want want to rebuild the library because I have dozens of projects (books, calendars, etc.) that I don't want to lose.
I originally scanned in many hundreds of photos that were named with dates included. If I batch rename the files with numbers I would lose all of the meticulous naming. Is there a way to just add a number at the beginning of the photo file name. I was thinking maybe if I renamed, then I could just sort by name, but I am not sure how that would carry into the future if I want to do it by date...
I have everything backed up on Time Machine, but if I revert to a few days ago, do I have to revert everything else too? I spent 4 hours yesterday on iTunes upgrading music to iTunes Plus, updating iPhone software, etc. and I DO NOT want to lose that work either.
    Ideas??

See my reply to your post in the other topic.

  • Can albums be sorted?

If I create a lot of albums, I'd like an easy way to find the album, one way would be to alphabetize them, so all the Christmas albums, for example, would be together. It also might be nice to be able to drag the albums into a particular order. Also, can you have imbedded albums? So I could put all the Christmas albums into a folder called Christmas, and I wouldn't have to scroll through dozens of Christmas albums looking for Halloween.

    Hello Jerry,
How are you using Revel? Are you using it on the Mac, Ipad or Web at Adoberevel.com? You can create albums and add event date info to your images. (see images below) Then you can sort your images by date or event. If you are a pc user and using Adoberevel.com then this is not available. Only for the mac and ipad, iphone.
Currently there is not a way to have nested albums (Album embedded with an album). We have received requests from others for this feature, as I will add your vote to this list.
    Thanks
    Scott

  • Album view sorted by year in reversed order?

Apple, why did you take this feature away? People with large libraries of albums don't want to scroll down a long way to get to the albums added lately.
The option to show the year of the files added in album view was also a big hit in previous versions.

Really really annoying! Over the years I ordered manually my huge library sorting tracks with this technique:
    http://forums.ilounge.com/itunes-mac-pc/263083-sort-order-when-using-album-artis t-year-album-list-view.html
Now this trick doesn't work anymore and there's no way to order albums descending.
The new GUI is absolutely nice, Apple give us an additional selectbox like JayBrar says

  • Droid S Charge - Photo Albums or Sorting?

I'm sure I've missed something, but is there a way in the gallery to create different 'albums'? or groupings and the ability to sort photos? I'm looking to divide what is work related, family, personal, etc. for downloaded photos, or those taken with the camera (combined) and can't seem to lock this down or figure out if it's just an user error, haha.
Thanks in advance for any help/direction. Didn't see anything in the manual either.
    [for DROID Samsung Charge]

    Dear ckswanson,
I am not aware of an option to create albums or collections within the gallery itself.  You can of course upload the pictures to another service, such as Picasa or Verizon Media Manager, create the albums there, and see them on the phone.  It's a little more cumbersome than being able to do it right in the gallery.
