Artist Name listed 3 times on my IPod

I purchased Bruce Springsteen's Magic from Itunes. After the download, I noticed that Bruce now appears 3 times on my "Music" by "Artist" list. Each of the 3 listings have the same 45 songs noted under them. This was never a problem until I downloaded Magic. Any ideas?

Make sure there isn't any blank spaces in the artist name. This could cause the multiple listings.

  • Artists names listed multiple times

On my ipod i have two artists whose names are listed multiple times.
When I connect my ipod to the computer the songs are listed only once, but on the ipod the songs are re-listed each time the artists names are shown. it lenghtnes the artist list tremendously. any thoughts?

A spelling or punctuation mistake, or sometimes a trailing space usually causes this after the artists and/or song name, which fools the iPod into thinking that there are two different artists or songs. The trailing space is the hardest to spot.
Best way to cure this is to go into iTunes, highlight that artist and/or songs, right click on them and select "get info".
This brings up the multiple song info window. If you see the "artist" field is left blank, then there is a discrepancy with that name.
So to correct this, in the artist or song box retype the name, as you would like it, and then click ok. You should do this even if no mistakes are immediately visible.
Re sync this new artist/song info to your iPod.
If the above is not the issue, try this also. Highlight all the songs for that artist, right click on them and select "apply sort field/same artist".
    See if that works.

  • Same artist name displays multiple times on iPod

I have about 24 cd's of Miles Davis on my iPod, but his name appears twice, with the total amount of cd's split between the two Miles Davis'.... any idea as to how I can combine them? I've tried renaming the artists' name but that did not work.

  • An artist name comes up twice on my ipod (just for one artist not them all)

I checked the caps and everything for the artists name on both songs but then come up as
    Samhain
    Samhain

This is due to the way information is stored w/ .mp3 files. There are actually two artist listings for each mp3 file and if both are not identical, then you will get 2 or more listings for the same band name. So for each mp3 file there is an "Artist" listing and an "Album Artist" listing. Even if the artist is "Samhain" for all of your songs, if the album artist is not the same, then you will have multiple listings for Samhain.
To correct this, highlight all the songs for Samhain (a great band btw), right click and select "Get Info". Type Samhain for both the Artist and Album Artist fields.

  • Ipad various artists names listed

I have several hundred songs from various decades which I sort by various artists by the decade - 1970's 1990's etc, but since ios7 the artists name is not displayed and also are in a random order

Connect your iPad to iTunes, sort your music according to your criteria, then sync.
Also check Settings > Music > Group By Album Artist > On or Off = your choice.

  • My itunes library has everything by artist name, yet when i sync my ipod to it, some songs are only visible in the song menu but not the artist menu, how do i fix this problem so that evry song is visible under the artist menu in my ipod

I bought an ipod classic and got it 2day. I have over 18000 songs on my itunes and all the songs have all the correct info. I tried syncing my ipod today and all of the songs have gone onto my ipod.
However my problem is that quite a few songs are not in the artist menu and only in the songs menu on the ipod, even though evry bit of information for the song is correct.
I would like all my songs under the artist menu on my ipod as searching through the song menu is ridiculously time consuming.
    Can anyone fix my problem?

For the missing Artists on your iPod, make sure their tracks in iTunes are not marked as "Part of a compilation" in iTunes. You can do this by highlighting the track, right->clicking on them and choosing "Get Info" from the shortcut menu. When the window pops up, head over to the Info tab and make sure there is NO tick mark next to this option in the lower right hand corner. Lastly, sync the updated changes to your iPod.

  • I have ripped all of my Cds into iTune, now I cannot find where some of the artists have been filled, not all the artists are listed, yet others are listed multiple times as they play with other groups. How do I list all one artist under his name? I know

Sorry this will appear pretty basic stuff.  I have ripped all my Cds into iTunes, but in starting to make playlists it is apparent that some artists are listed multiple times as they appear with different bands, and others do not appear at all.  I have tried searching different categories, compilations etc, and Finder box does not bring them up.
    My questions are:-
Do I need additional software to manipulate my tunes in iTunes?
    If so what is suggested?
    or if not:-
How can I re arrange the tunes so that they appear only under one artist?
How do I make my "lost" artists tunes appear?
    Thanks for any advice.

I am not really following what the problem is here.  Artists are listed in the Artist field.  I guess you could stick individual artists in a band in a field such as comments, but then you would have to include searching the comments field in your search.  In which fields are these names located?
How are you making these playlists? Are these smart playlists or are you just dragging tracks to a playlist?
Are you doing this search with Finder's find or with iTunes' search?
If I knew exactly what it was you were trying to do I could tell you if you need addditional software.  In reality though there isn't "additional software" for iTunes.  There's Applescript plugins but I don't see how the ones with which I am familiar would have anything to do with searching for artist names.
How can I re arrange the tunes so that they appear only under one artist?

Quick answer:  Select all the tracks on the album, File > get info, and either give them all a single "album artist", or check the "compilation" flag (as in https://discussions.apple.com/message/17670085).
If these are from multiple-CD sets you may also need to enter the appropriate information in the disc number fields.

  • Album Listed Multiple Times

I just got the 120 gb iPod Classic (I was using the 5th Gen. 30 gb video before) and when I finally got it to sync I saw that some of my albums are listed multiple times on the iPod...it's weird because they aren't listed that way on iTunes...ant suggestions?

Excuse the long post, but hopefully covering all the bases (that I can think of) will help you fix the other issues you are likely to run into as you try to organise your library.
    *Use an album friendly view*
iTunes will let you sort music on many columns, some of which are unlikely to group albums together. The most useful order for editing the library is *Album by Artist*. If you're not already there, select the list view and click on the column heading for Artist until it reads Album by Artist.
    *One cover, too many tracks*
The iPod (and iTunes to a lesser extent) conflates two or more albums with the same title, most obviously with *Greatest Hits*. On the iPod this can result in one album acting as a combination of two or more. Selecting any cover gives all the tracks of all albums with the same title. The workaround for this "Greatest Hits" bug is to give each album a unique title - I tend to go for *Album - Album Artist* as this reads clearly in the iTunes browser. Alternatively you could use the wording as it appears on the cover, append different numbers of spaces for each different album or set different values for the Sort Album.
*Album not with others by same artist*
iTunes relies on the Gracenote CDDB database when identifying CD's. This often marks collections or anthologies of an artist's work as a compilation. In iTunes, however, the compilation flag has the logical function of grouping together tracks with the same album name, but different artists on each track, e.g. "Now That's What I Call Metal 666!". These compilations are then all grouped together at the end of cover flow. Most of us however, would expect "Greatest Hits" albums to be listed with the other albums by the same album artist. For albums which are essentially by a single album artist or group it is best to set the appropriate value for the album artist and clear the compilation flag.
    *One album, too many covers*
Sadly the iPod ignores the Album Artist field when grouping albums which causes problems when some tracks list guest artists. You can simply mark the entire album as a compilation which seems to be the way iTMS handles it, however that's not an ideal fix. Short of waiting for Apple to address this issue (and as far as I can tell it goes back to the 1st gen. of iPods) we need a workaround. What I do is to put any additional artist info. in square brackets after the song name. E.g. *Track \[Feat. Guest\]* and then set *Artist=Album Artist* for each track. For anthologies where the Album Artist is credited as part of another group, e.g. for Cream tracks on an Eric Clapton anthology, I use *Track \[As Group\]*. For a track where the main Album Artist doesn't receive a credit, e.g. the first track of the Slim Shady LP credited to Jeff Bass, I just set the track name to *Track \[Guest\]* while still setting the artist to the album artist. N.b. I use square brackets to indicate this is not part of the actual song title and also use this style for Mix/Live/Bonus info.
*One album, still too many covers*
iTunes may split albums into two or more sections if some tracks from the album have different values for Artist, Album Artist, Album, No. of Discs or Part of a Compilation. Tiny differences such as trailing spaces, accented characters or variants of symbols can sometimes be quite hard to spot. The iPod is also more sensitive to case variations and may split or reorder an album that looks okay in iTunes. Normally overtyping the desired value for each shared field will complete the grouping of the album into one entity. Occasionally, however, this method seems to fail. When this happens I've found that you can force every field to update properly by adding some extra text - e.g. a trailing X, which once applied seems to complete the joining of the tracks into one album. Once this has happened the extra data can be removed and the album should remain properly grouped.
*I've tried that, there are STILL too many covers*
The Sort Artist, Sort Album & Sort Album Artist fields can be used to override the normal sort order. For example iTunes automatically drops leading prepositions (a/an/the) so "The Beatles" are arranged under "B" instead of "T". Occasionally different tracks from the same album can have different values in these sort fields which can also break up the grouping. Making the sort columns visible in iTunes can help with spotting & correcting such problems.
    *One cover for multi-disc albums*
Multi-disc albums are often listed as *Album (CD1)* for CD 1, *Album (CD2)* for CD 2 etc. To display these properly using just one cover, each disc should hadve the correct *Disc X of Y* values set, and then the entire album should be given the single title Album. Being somewhat obsessive I also renumber the tracks sequentially, working backwards from the last track until I reach disc 1.
    *One artist, many names*
With some artists, particularly classical composers, you should be aware of alternative representations of their names. E.g. 2Pac vs. Tupac. The menus will work best if for each artist you standardise on just one form of their name. E.g. make a choice between Mozart, W.A. Mozart or Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and then apply it consistently. For classical music I tend also to use the Composer as the Artist & Album Artist and either discard the performer details or place these into the Comments field.

  • Incorrect artist name for all songs by that artist

Recently something weird has happened to my music library on my iPhone 5S (iOS 8.2 before, but I've updated to 8.3 and still the issue persists). All the songs by a particular artist have the artist name listed wrongly. For example, I have about 50 Katy Perry songs from her 3 albums, and all of them are listed as "Katy Perry & Snoop Dogg", which is, by the way, the artist name for ONLY California Gurls. Funny thing is, the artist names display correctly on iTunes on my MacBook Pro. I've checked the info for the songs, and the names are correct under both Details and Sorting. This happens for a few other artists as well.
I've tried deleting the songs from my iPhone and re-syncing them back, still the same. I've tried changing the artist, album artist info for the songs, doesn't help. I've even re-synced my entire music library to my iPhone but that didn't work either.
Probably a bug but is there a workaround or a fix for this?

    UPDATE!!!
Turns out that deleting glitchy albums from the phone and then re-syncing via Home computer's iTunes worked!
It just takes a bit longer to change over to the proper artist names!!!
    YAYY!!!!
So deleting music from iPhone Music Library and then going into your home iTunes Library and re-syncing/adding it to your iphone or device while it is plugged in via USB!

  • Artists name on ipod comes up multiple times.

Some artists names comes up multiple times? Why is that? And how do you stop it from happening? And yes they are all spelled correctly....

The names may be spelt correctly but even an extra space that you might not notice can make a difference. I have found instances where the spacebar has created extra stop at the end of the line. The quickest way to eliminate these discrepancies is to sort your iTunes library by artist to bring your tracks together. Click on the first track by your artist, hold down the shift key and click on the last track in the list, this will highlight all in between. Right click on the list and choose Get Info, you get a dialogue box asking if you want to update multiple items, click Yes and then the Info tab. Overtype the artist name then click ok and this will ensure the whole selection is identical. Once you've done this connect your iPod, if you are updating automatically it will pick up the changes. If you are updating manually follow the instructions above with the iPod connected and carry out the changes directly on the iPod's song list.

  • My iPod shows the artist names several times.

Now you probably think that this is one of the same old questions which have been asked a lot of times. But it isn't.
When selecting artist on my new Fifth Generation iPod, many artists are shown severeal times, from 3-10 times infact!
And yes, I have checked the spelling, in iTunes, I've selected all the songs of one artist, and written the name.
And in iTunes, the artist is shown only once. But on my iPod there are several of them. And the songs are not divided equally in each part, each copy of the artist contains the excat amount of albums and songs as all the other, but still, these extra songs are not marked as more songs "on" my iPod.
Does anyone know what the problem is?
iPod Fifth Generation (Video)   Windows XP

I have noticed this on two occasions with just 2 entries listed twice on the Ipod. I am not sure what the problem is. Both times the spelling looked the same.
I managed to get rid of the problem by copying the name from one of the albums then pasting it in artist and album artist for the other album. When I updated the ipod it was now under one heading.
    I hope this helps.

  • Artist name does not appear in artist list but album name is in album list - Ipod Classic 160gb

For an album I have imported onto my iPod from iTunes, the album name is in the Album list but the Artist name is not on the Artist list.  I have tried deleting the album from the iPod and re-adding from ITunes but the same result.  It is a single artist album, so the artist name is exactly the same for each track; all the tracks are there.  Big nuisance as I use artist name a lot to find specific albums.

this did not work for me,
Possibly because your problem (you say) was the album name. The original post was about the artist name and is therefore a different problem.
    ecb31 wrote:
...I had to fill in the Album for each song, then it showed on my ipod, for ones I did ot know, I just put bloody apple.
    Huh?
Let me get this right, you had lots of songs without the album name in them, so you filled in the album name yourself - if you knew the album name. If you didn't know the album name, you then entered the same text on all the rest of those songs. So now, you must have a lot of songs all on the same album, even though they're not meant to be - and - you've put text in to a lot of your songs that will remind you forevermore, of just how unhappy you are.
    Well! &
My question to you is; where did you get the songs from, that they came without the correct information in them?
If you imported them from a CD, iTunes will go and get the information for you.
If you bought the songs from the iTunes Store, or another music retailer, the information is in the digital file that you purchased.
How therefore, does so much of your music appear to be incomplete?
Am I missing something, or have you simply failed to explain the porblem properly?

  • Same Artist Listed Multiple times on iPod..

Before anyone tells me about changing the artist info of the song, I know about that. The problem is not the file info, I haven't changed the artist's info in about 6 months but all of sudden, on my iPod only not iTunes, the same artist is listed about 10 times. I only have one album of the artist on my iPod, and like I said the files haven't been edited in months. I know its not a serious problem, but it is annoying scrolling through the same artist and I am hoping my iPod is becoming corrupted. Anyone experience the same problem?

    Hmm...same here.
I had posted my question under the itunes post about a week ago and heard nothing back.
In my case, after the recent update I added a new album to an aready existing artist in my iTunes, synced and the next time I used the ipod , I noticed it had the same Artist 3 times, identical playlist, album tiltes, and tracks!
I've unchecked the artist, synced, and as expected they go from the ipod.
I check them back on and they appear 3 times again after syncing.
The only thing I have yet to do is a total restore. But with 60gigs of video audio and photos, its a bit of a pain!
Im getting very wary of these Itunes updates, remember the infamous -48 error that had every one baffled for about a month?
In my case the artist in question is New Order. I've renamed all my NO tracks to New Order2 as the artist, synced and the artist comes up twice!
I've renamed them back to 'New Order' and clicked on 'Album artist' to be 'New Order' also and re synced and I get back 3 in the list!!!

  • Same Artist Lists Multiple Times

I'm confused on why a random artist will list itself multiple times when others will organize themsevles under one name with a drop menu. All the artist/album/track information is listed correctly but on Itunes and on the Ipod it will list it seperately instead of together. Anyone know how to fix that?

You need to make sure the artist name is spelt in an identical manner on every track. Even an extra space at the end of the name that you might not notice can make a difference. Try this even if everything looks the same. Sort your iTunes library by artist to bring your tracks together. Click on the first track by your artist, hold down the shift key and click on the last track in the list, this will highlight all in between. Right click on the list and choose Get Info, you get a dialogue box asking if you want to update multiple items, click Yes. If you see the "artist" field is left blank, then there is a discrepancy with that name. Overtype the artist name then click ok and this will ensure the whole selection is identical. Once you've done this connect your iPod, if you are updating automatically it will pick up the changes. If you are updating manually follow the instructions above with the iPod connected and carry out the changes directly on the iPod's song list.
If the name is not the issue, try this. Highlight all the songs for that artist, right click on them and select "apply sort field/same artist".

  • Plz help, numerous artist names on iPod

hi guys, i jus got a 30gb ipod and when i put my albums on, my iPod shows two artist names and one of them is correct, the other just has one of their songs. i hate unorganized music so can you please help. thanks

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You can highlight all songs by the same artist or in the same album and then perform the steps Damon listed. I find this way to be easier and work better the first time.
This is usually caused by extra spaces at the end of the artist name or some minor change in it. I like highlighting all the songs by the same artist then going to get info better as you can make all of them match at once.
    To do this:
    1) Highlight all songs by the same artist
    2) Right click one, making sure all remain highlighted, and go to get info. Click OK/Yes to the message that pops up.
    3) Retype the artist field.
    4) Click OK.
All of the songs you selected should now have identical artist information and appear under one person.
Once you are done with this, update your iPod with iTunes.
