As expected of MS Word

Leave it to Microsoft to make something easy hard. I wish Apple took on making their own well suported bug free Word Processor. Anyway...... I got Word for new Macbook
I'm polish so I tried to switch between Polish and English. In the process I wanted to also get Czech, I do a little work in czech... so spell check for that would be nice. Anyway SOMEHOW whenever, and whatever I do in Word.. the program turns on to czech and DOES not spell check my english . When I try to switch to english as in Tools>>Language>>English it DOES NOT do anything. When I go back to that window again it is still set on Czech. I also tried to set English as a default language.. so that "it would be a default language for all new documents" well.... still czech!
What the heck what am I to do? Now I got no Polish and NO english... only czech and it doesn't even spell check it... it just gives me a message that the language proofing pack isn't installed. I'm in H-E-L-L... i need word to work ASAP.

Also, in system preferences go to International and make sure the languages you work in are checked from that LOOOOONG list. I work in American English, Slovak, and German, and those (plus Spanish) are the only ones I checked.
Then, on the languages page of the international setting, put those languages in the order you use them. On my language page it says, in this order: English, American English, British English, Slovak, German, Spanish. Check the box to keep these on your menu bar.
99% of the time I write in American English, and there is a little American flag on my menu bar that tells me that's what I'm doing. When I need to write a Slovak or German word or whatever, I pull down the menu, click on the new language and the keyboard changes to that language.
Sorry that I don't know anything about spell checkers - Slovak and German are spelled quite phonetically!
Have you tried highlighting text, reminding it what language it's in if necessary, and then pressing F7 for spellcheck?
It may be that you have to install more languages from your disk, or it may be that the mac settings are still unfamiliar to you. I was also quite surprised that there were so many differences between using word in windows and in mac, and it took me a while to make things work properly.... good luck!
OH-- I also want to mention that if your version of word won't work no matter what you do, you can download neooffice for free, and create word documents in that word processor. Many people prefer that program because 1) it's free, 2) it isn't microsoft, and 3) it runs natively on our macbooks, without using up the resources Word needs.
Finally, Apple DOES have a word processor, called Pages. I tried it and much preferred Word, but you might not feel the same way.

    I am facing an issue with hiding the field codes in Word 2013, the same code works fine in Word 2010.

    I checked and confirmed that 'Alt+F9' toggles the field codes correctly.
    Yes, whatever the field codes i added from the code all of them are not hidden. when i have below code:

    because of project reqquirement we had the above code.
    But if i comment the above bolded line and i dont show the field codes, After executing i found out that still the field codes are visible at some lines(not in all the lines) in the  document. I am not making any changes in the settings/options/etc
    after i execute the code. I am confused whether any other code is making the fieldcodes visible. Do we have any other syntax/codes that can make the fieldcodes visible ? Thanks in advance.

  • Not printing as expected in Appleworks Word Processing

    I have been trying to print off a invitation insert. I have set the paper size to 8.5cms width and 19cms height and selected the untitled paper size as per normal but for some reason it starts to print 10cms down the paper - Has anyone any idea of what is wrong?

  • Applescript to open word doc directly in word

    I have hundreds of old word files that I would like to convert to pdf format.
    Im running OSX 10.6.8 and Word 2008 (12.3.3).
    When I go to open the files in the finder, I get an error from Word that says:
    "The file type is blocked from opening in this version. To help secure your computer, some file types are blocked from opening when you double-click the fire or drag the file to the Microsoft Word icon,  If you trust the file is secure, you can open the file by clicking Open on the File menu."
    From the official Microsoft support page it says the following:
    "Consider the following scenario. In Microsoft Word 2008 for Mac, you try to open a document that was created in an earlier version of Microsoft Word for Mac. To do this, you use one of the following methods:
    You double-click the document.
    You drag a document to the Word 2008 for Mac program icon.
    You drag a document to the Word 2008 for Mac program icon that is in the Dock.
    You run an AppleScript that uses the Finder to open a Microsoft Word document.
    In this scenario, the document does not open as expected in the Word for Mac program."
    When I open the file as suggested (open Word, choose File>Open, select file), it opens.
    I created the following applescript, which I though would be the same as using Word to open the file:

    end tell
    For some reason, running this script gives me the same error as trying to double click the file in the finder.  Is my syntax in the above script still somehow trying to use the finder to open the file?  Is there anyway to automate this?

  • Roundtripping text between Indesign and Word?

    I'm not exactly sure which forum this belongs on, so I'll start here.
    Our company does a lot of repurposing. We pickup recipes from a magazine and publish them in a book, or vice-versa. Our current system of picking up this content is inefficient and requires the text to be restyled every time it gets picked up. We're trying to implement a workflow that will retain the styling and eliminate duplication, but I'm encountering a couple problems:
    1) When pasting text from InDesign into a word doc, it retains the styles UNLESS those styles are pre-defined in word. For example, if the word template has a pre-defined style called Recipe - head and you paste text that has that style, the text will no longer have that style applied after pasting; it will be set to Normal.
    2) I can use InCopy to pickup the text and then export to RTF, but the text comes into Word with all the formatting applied (sizes, fonts, colors, etc.). This makes it very hard for the editors to read when they're reviewing the copy and making changes.
    So my questions are these:
    1) Is there a way to map styles from InDesign to Word? I'd like to set up the word doc to have all the styles names without the formatting so it's easier to read. OR,
    2) Is there a way to strip out all text formatting EXCEPT the style names themselves? We want it to retain the style names so we can map them to the InDesign styles when we import the text.
    If anyone has dealt with these issues, I would really appreciate the help. My searching thus far has yielded little in the way of results.

    Because I have very few translators who can work in ID, I use a workflow like this all the time. If you're handy with VBA, you can write a script that
    will go through all of the styles in your exported RTF and replace the formatting in the InDesign styles with something much simpler. For example, I'll change all serif styles to TNR and all sans styles to Arial, because I can assume that my less technically competent translators who panic when asked to install a font would at least have those two fonts installed. I can change the paragraph indents and spacing to something much simpler than what is in the ID doc with a single click. When I place that translated RTF back into InDesign, I can replace the translator's, ah, "formatting choices" with the original style definitions, so I can simply Clear Overrides and get something pretty close to the original formatting, only requiring minor cleanup.
    If you're not handy with VBA, and yet expect to use Word as an integral part of your workflow, I suggest that you get busy studying.
    Edit: Actually, tagged text is a pretty good idea, if you're willing to do some post-processing. The kind of editor who insists on unstyled text in Word is unlikely to be willing to edit tagged text in a raw text editor (or to use TagEditor or some other tool intended for manipulating tagged text).

  • Word as document editor

    Hello,
    I have a fresh install of Solman Ehp1 that we want to use during a new project implementation.
    My dilemna is the following:
    I want to use the various SAP delivered document templates during my project. One of them is the BPP. If I look at the template in the project admin side, things are fine , i.e word in place is loaded and I see the template in word.
    Now, I'm in the blueprint (SOLAR01) or configuration (SOLAR02). I click the relevant button to add a document I pick the BPP documentation type, but all I get is a pseudo text editor showing up - when I expect for MS word to show up with the relevant template.
    Is there somewhere where I have to indicate that MS word is the default editor?
    This happens in both word 2003 and 2007 version.

    Not sure exactly what you are saying but suspect you have inserted a series of objects containing text.
    If you are left with blue boxes inline in your text, you can get rid of them by treating them like characters, either click before or after them and using forward or backward delete.
    In future paste using Paste and Match Style to eliminate the unwanted layout and styling.
    You could also extract the text from the blue boxes by simply clicking in them and select all (command a) and pasting that back into the outside text.

  • Converting pdf to word generates image

    I'm using Acrobat XI trial on Windows 7, Office 2010
    I converted an old pdf (that looks as if it was scanned from the original book) by using Tools-->Export File to--> Microft Word document (I noticed the Edit-->Preferences-->convert from pdf to word shows "Run OCR if needed: TRUE")
    I expected an editable Word document, but the text appears as an image in Word 2010 (page is outlined with dotted blue line; right-clicking shows options for picture formatting; clicking anywhere on the page does not allow editing individual words).
    Any ideas on getting the text image into Word for editing?  Some of the words look quite "degraded" so I understand that any OCR process will not be perfect; I'm just looking for a way to get this book in Word without having to OCR each page, one at a time.

    OCR the original using ClearScan. That replaces the images with text. Then save as a DOC file.

    I am developing a asp.net web application /w visual studio 2012. I have created some reports with report viewer, and I would like to export those reports to pdf and MS Word format. The pdf output is same as I expected, but the word output is
    missing top and bottom margin, it leads we cannot print the header and footer correctly in MS Word, also the repeat header on each page property didn't work too.
    If I use report builder 3.0 and try to export the reports to pdf and MS Word format, the problem still exists.
    Is anyone has the solution for this issue?

    According to your description, you have issues when exporting the report into Microsoft Word file. The margin of header and footer can't be displayed. And the RepeatOnNewPage property is not working. Right?
    In Reporting Services, when we export the report into Word file, it will ignore page header and footer height settings. Also Word does not repeat header rows on page two and greater, although you set the
    RepeatOnNewPage property of the static header row in a tablix (table, matrix, or list) to

    I am facing the difficulty during the step in smartform printing. Client is to have a printout in Bi-lingual (english+arabic), Arabic is printing fine. The maintenance language of smartform is arabic.

    Pass the amount after Decimal to the Spell amount seperately and then concatenate the two parts of the amount.
    For example : 30.60 USD
    Store the amount in a character string. Split the string at decimal point using a SPLIT statement.
    DATA: amount_total(10),
    round(7),
    dec_part(3).
    DATA: dec(1) TYPE c VALUE '.',
    amount_total = '30.69'.
    SPLIT amount_total AT dec INTO round dec_part.
    First pass variable 'round' to Spell_amount and then in the second call pass variable 'Dec_PART' and concatenate the two results.

  • Power Mac Mirror Door DVI or ADC to SINGLE RCA VIDEO OUT to a TV...adapter?

    I have a Mirror Door G4 tower that I would like to use as a media center, with an old(er) Magnavox 19" television that only has the single yellow VIDEO IN jack, and the red and white audio L and R. Is there a converter cable that is similar to the one I used to use with my old G4 Powerbook which took the mini DVI and turned it into either composite video out? (I think it was Mini DVI, maybe ADC, whatever that little square video out on the Powerbook G4). I am prepared for low-res results, mostly just want to look at the itunes window and occasionally view utube clips or DVDs.
    Also, does the G4 take the original Airport card (not the extreme), and if so does it need a separate antenna the way some G5s do?
    And finally should I get good results with a Bluetooth dongle plugged into a USB port on the rear of the G4 when connecting a white Apple wireless keyboard?
    Some of these answers will of course sort themselves out with experimentation, but any tips or experience in doing these things would be greatly appreciated.

    I expect the weasel-words in Apple's description are there to be sure that whatever Video card you choose, the card does actually provide the signals needed. These are the VGA-equivalent signals around the Bar at one end of the connector. That gets you Red, Blue, Green+Luminosity, H-Sync and V-Sync. Those signals in combination are all that is needed to build S-Video or Yellow-RCA composite video On-the-Fly (not buffered).
    The signals can be sliced and diced to get slightly different versions of Analog Video using adapters built around the SKART interface. There is a cheap one-chip wonder converter used in lots of converters, also loosely called SKART.

    This does NOT do conversion to Digital Video, DVI, or HDMI when starting from VGA. That kind of converter has memory and scanning hardware that pushes the cost up higher than the price of an display card.

  • How do I hide the right document/section sidebar?

    I just opened Pages 5.2 for the first time to edit a big text document, and it opened to a blank page with a big side panel or sidebar the height of the right side of the document window. It has two tabs, one labeled Document and the other labeled Section, and is 2 3/4 inches wide, a huge amount of real estate on my 21 inch iMac's screen. No resizing arrows appear when I hover over the separator between the document and the panel, and the width stays the same if I resize the document window.
    I've figured out how to view or hide other screen elements, but that devilish side panel won't go away. Please tell me there's a way to get rid of it!
    Also, can someone recommend a user guide for the new Pages app? I'm not fond of Apple's online guide. Pages 5.2 seems better than the old Pages app, and if it's good enough I'll switch from NeoOffice, which has tons of features I don't need but isn't as user friendly for regular daily use as apps like Word or WordPerfect.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

    Interesting that you think the Menu looks more "what you expect from a word processor", when the Menus are almost exactly like Pages '09 just missing stuff.
    I think the orderly menus and Inspectors are what I like best about Pages '09. They work from left to right, top to bottom from big features down to small details. Wish everyone did that.
    The Inspectors in Pages '09 can be freely moved, hidden/shown at a keystroke or individual tabs separated. Compared with the huge wasteful forced placement of Pages 5 and almost impossible to work with if not open.
    Apple has fixed about 9 features in Pages 5.2 but since we started the list we probably have found just as many other omissions and major bugs.
    So Pages 5.2 still is short about 100 features and has serious bugs with output, along with a strong probability that your files will ultimately develop serious problems. maybe not even be openable.
    Pages 5 has a huge list of missing features many really essential and a long list of bugs, with the chance of losing your work always just around the corner:

    As far as using it for real work, I'd still say it is unusable for several reasons:
    1. No facing pages
    2. Lists are just about unmanageable
    3. The T.O.C.s promise improvements by making Section T.O.C.s but there are no retainable T.O.C. styles and the T.O.C.s seem to break
    4. Even moderate amounts of objects bring it to a crawl
    5. Multi page Tables won't show content after several pages
    6. Objects and special formatting in tables can vanish when outputting to pdf
    7. Long lists of Styles lose styles in the list
    8. Still can't select non-contiguous text
    9. No bookmarks
    10. Very slow operation and work procedures
    11. Things get hairy with long documents
    12. eMailing or FTPing documents with 3rd party software can break them
    13. Failed documents are impossible to parse
    There are too many other short falls to list here
    On the plus side only 4 things stand out for me:
    1. Much better drawing tools
    2. Quick layout breaks by simply selecting text and nominating the number of columns. Unfortunately these have on spacimg options before, after or to the sides
    3. Quick editing of templates in the Template Chooser
    4. Collaboration between multiple users
    Still unworkable for me. Particularly disturbing is the hairy iCloud integration, and the dangerously obscure and incompatible file format.
    I am still looking for a replacement, LibreOffice has many of the features, plus others but has a rough UI. So for now I am sticking with Pages '09 which works as it always has until Apple finally makes it unusable.

  • Text Appearing as 1-Pixel-Sized Boxes in CS2

    Greetings,
    I'm having a problem with text inside Photoshop CS2. I've never had this problem before so I'm not sure what's causing it or how to fix it-- obviously.
    I first noticed this problem when I was doing some work in Photoshop earlier today. I was working on a 1024 x 1024 image and noticed that when I tried to add text that I couldn't see it at all. It wasn't hidden behind any layers as the text layer was at the top, the opacity was set to 100%, the layer wasn't hidden, so it should have been visible... but it wasn't. I tried increasing the font size up to the max but again I couldn't see it.
    Wondering what the heck was going on I created a new image file at 190 x 190 pixels and tried to add in text. This time something appeared and I realized why I couldn't see the text on the previous piece... because the text, for some reason, is appearing as tiny 1 pixel by 1 pixel sized boxes (and the font size is set to 72). If I lower the font size to anything below 72, than the boxes simply disappear. It doesn't matter if it's custom font or the standard font, it all does the same thing.
    I was doing some work yesterday in Photoshop so I'm not sure if I accidentally hit some option that's causing this and I didn't realize it; though the text was working yesterday...
    I've been trying to trace back through the option panels to see if there's anything that might cause this to happen but I haven't found anything yet.
    Does anyone happen to know what's going on here and how I can fix this?

    For sure you had "Resample Image" checked. You should have had that unchecked. You don't want to re-sample (increase or decrease the number of pixels), you just want to change the resolution-to-dimension relationship. You want to increase the resolution without re-sampling, which will cause your dimensions (in inches or centimeters) to decrease (probably by quite a bit if your resolution was set at 1 pixel (per inch?).
    All this works better if you sort of think things through beforehand. If you know you are producing an 8.5"x11" sheet and you know that you will be printing it out at about 300 pixels per inch, then you create your canvas with those dimensions and resolution or, if you are using an image instead of a blank canvas you crop and Image Size the image to that dimension and resolution. Then, when you add your text, the font size in points will be roughly what you would expect from a word processing application. 10-12 pt text will come out similar to a normal "typewritten" text document, for example.

  • Layout Options - Page Order Does Not Work Correctly

    I have a Photosmart C7280 All-in-One printer.  The Layout Option - Page Order does not work as expected.  The User Guide (page 95) states that the default for a multiple page document is to print first page first.  The manual states that to print last page first requires one to change the Page Order to "Back to Front".  For my Excel, Word, Internet Explorer and PDF pages, I need to leave the Page Order as "Front to Back" if I want the last page to print first.  This makes no sense.  In addition, I can't get my Quicken reports to print last page first no matter what I try.  Does anyone no why the Page Order does not work as expected for Excel, Word, IE and PDF, and does not work at all for Quicken?

    If you uncheck the "show" option, then the corresponding HTML for that item is not rendered on the page. Thus, when you try to inspect that item via APEX_APPLICATION.G_F02, it simply doesn't exist.
    One trick that I use when I want to have hidden items on the page, but not make them take up any space, is to concatenate them to items that will be visible.
    Using your query as an example, I would re-write it like this:
    SELECT APEX_ITEM.CHECKBOX(1,ROWNUM,'CHECKED')ATTENDED,
    APEX_ITEM.HIDDEN(2,C.PARTY_ID)
