Asking for host string

Hi,
I have downloaded the Oracle 9i personal edition on a Windows98 system. When I am trying to run the sqlplus.exe file, it asks me for User ID,Passww, Host string. What host string am I supposed to give? Its a standalone application that I want to run Oracle 9i as. Please guide me.

So that we may better diagnose DOWNLOAD problems, please provide the following information.
- Server name
- Filename
- Date/Time
- Browser + Version
- O/S + Version
- Error Msg

SQL*Plus Issue:
Right-click on the SQL*Plus short-cut that give you TNS error and see which executable it points to. Most probably this is the one in you newly installed Dev Suite directory.
Next, Check the contents of TNSNAMES.ora file in the following directory:
C:\DevSuiteHome_1\NETWORK\ADMIN
(whichever drive/disk you installed Dev Suite in).
This file must contain TNS entry of the database you intend to connect to using Dev Suite applications (Forms, Reports, SQL*Plus, etc).

Look the Host String is the Information which tells about the Machine where the dataBase is Located and the SID name and the PORT .
So when we connect to the data base via JDBC the URL which we supply is the Host String .
If the database is not installed in ur machine and u access it remotely then u need a Host String which ur DBA will be able to tell U .

The directory/path is the path to the root folder and, in most cases, should be left blank...

What is the key that you put into
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE so you do not have to enter a
hostname when you login to a database using SQL PLUS?

Oracle 8i host string

When you start oracle 8i it ask for host string. Can somebody tell me what should be entered there if Oracle 8i personal edition is installed on a personal PC.
What will be host string for oracle 8i enterprise edition. What will be management server name for Enterprise manager.

You can find the connectString under
ORACLE_HOME\..\NETWORK\ADMIN\tnsnames.ora file.
You should be able to see an entry that will look like this
ABC =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = XXXX)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVER = DEDICATED)
(SERVICE_NAME = ORCL)
Here ABC is your connectString hence to connect to the database you will issue
SYSTEM/MANAGER@ABC
where SYSTEM=>USERNAME
MANAGER=>PASSWORD
ABC=>ConnectString

What should be the host string for SQLPlusW login.
Oracle Server (HP Unix) and the SQLPlusw login (windows platform) are at different box.
Oracle 10g R2.

Update this entry for <SID NAME> & <host ip adress> first, and add it to the tnsnames.ora file at $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin
my_db = (DESCRIPTION= (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)
(HOST=<host ip adress>)(PORT=1521) )
(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME= <SID NAME> )))
and then check on shell prompt: $tnsping my_db
If it works then you can access your database using following command on shell prompt: $sqlplus username/pwd@my_db.
For easy connection identifier use:
$sqlplus username/password@<host ip adress>:<port nu. eg. 1521>/<SID NAME>

Host String for Newbie

I'm trying (in vain) to start sql*plus but am failing on the Host String: parm.
I know my instance is up because oem, auqa-studio and jdbc all operate a-okay.
Where do you suppose Oracle keeps its' documentation on this cryptic parm? Certainly this "host string" must have a format. I've tried every format I can think of.
Getting ORA-12560 and ORA-12170.
I believe the format is something like 123.66.7.99:1521/ORCL
Hate to call Oracle support for such a newbie problem.

Try using Net Configuration Assistant (netca on Unix/Linux) to configure your connect string.

I would say that, since the OP has so little info, there are no policies in use. It there were then this question would never be asked the way it is being asked.
I had a client call with a letter from their insurance company; an accountant with malpractice insurance. THey asked the same question inmuch the same way. "What computer can you users access?" The question should be more like
"Do you have a policy that restricts access to computers and do you audit for compliance?"
I have had other clients whose insurance asked the question in that way. It produces a better view of what should be happening and how to show compliance.
I recommend that companies being asked these questions by their legal departments or insurance companies should contract with a god computer security consultant to assist with answering these very tricky questions. Of course if it is just you boss's
curiosity then you may need to discuss his requirements with him in more depth.

I have never had to enter a password to access mail. However, recently, I keep being asked for password on my ****** address. Only on my macbook. (which, btw, has a version number the drop down doesn't offer as a choice. I had to putt 9.4)

When I look up the account the "password" is a long string of gobbledygook. Something I would never do.
But when I attempt to use that pw I still can't get in.
I have no trouble accessing that email account on my mac mini. Just on the macbook.

I'm confess I'm still trying to get a handle on your problem. You do a fantastic job of describing it ... but I'm just trying to picture it accurately in my head.
I think, were I in your shoes, I'd begin by looking at what the debug page has to say for the specific destination in which you're interested in fixing. In other words, I'm not clear on where, exactly, this destination points ...

Is that your site, or the division within your site that you want to fix? "Normally", you do not need to specify a site handle to get to your site within your transfer CGI ... if you say "uillinois.edu", it's enough to transfer your users to iTunes U ... but every site still has a handle, and you could, if you wanted to, actually specify it in your transfer CGI. For example, this:

is for my entire site ... it's my site handle. Whereas this:
Destination uic.edu.1991288441
is for a division within my site ... but it's impossible to tell the difference between "site" and "division" from just the handle (I mean, if I didn't say "this is a site" and "this is a division", there'd be no way for you to know). So when I look at your creds and permissions on your debug page, I can't quite tell if they give you download access for your site, or for the specific division you want to fix. If you could open the debug page with your division as destination (or confirm that that's what we're looking at), it'd rule out some things.

Here I am using Java Type IV for database
connection.
So,there was no necessity of creating DNS.How your app communicates with db shouldn't matter for the end user. Still, you may want to use a functional network name also for the thin client driver connection string.
So,is there any other way to solve this problem.What is the problem really? Do you not use dns for network naming? Maybe you have to manage the hosts file on every client then.

R Jones I have the same problem. Running Windows-ME. Oracle9i installs without any complaints.
I bypassed all configuration setup because it was 'supposedly' optional and because
I had no idea of what to enter in many fields. When I fire-up SQL-plus, a login window
pops up asking for username, password, and hoststring. I tried predefined login/password
combinations SYSTEM/MANAGER and SCOTT/TIGER, but entered no host string,
and get an oracle error message 'protocol adapter error'.
If I bypass the login by entering command line string 'sqlplus.exe /NOLOG', I get
oracle error message 'not connected' whenever I try to execute an SQL statement.
What am I missing in my configuration setup, OR is there an incompatibility with Windows-ME ?
