ASM_PREFERRED_READ_FAILURE_GROUPS
Hi,
the ASM_PREFERRED_READ_FAILURE_GROUPS parameters is very useful for exented/streched Cluster to minise the traffic between all the extende Node.
In the same idea and to design extended cluster with Exadata somebody have any idea of parameter inside ASM to force the mirrorng disk affinity to ensure the replication between site.
The idea is to have multiple failure group inside a local and a replicaton between site to design a veritable stretched cluster.
Any idea ?
Thank a lot.

We just got our hands on 1TB flash. To mirror we would need 2TB. We have read about ASM preferred read failure groups and how they allow you to have flash as the primary read area and regular HD as the failure group if something were to happen to the flash. That way you use the 1TB flash and the mirror is the regular HD,
Hi,
Preferred read failure was primarily designed to force ASM read from Device with less latency avoiding "link" contention, very common in RAC Extended.
IMHO make sense use two failgroup (FLASH and Non-Flash) and use "preferred read" feature since you are mixing different technologies
You just must guarantee that WRITE on Non-Flash tech is acceptable because it will be your "bottleneck".
You can take advantage choosing a FLASH failgroup a prefered read. It will improve reading data to your environment.
If you don't use "prefered read" Instance will read data from both array with different tech.
So, suppose you are having a high load and excessive WRITE, if ASM read data from Non-Flash it will generate much more WAIT Event compared when ASM read from Flash device.
The reason is obvious:
Flash disk have no moving (mechanical) components. This distinguishes them from traditional electromechanical magnetic disks HDD, which contain spinning disks and movable read/write heads.

Oracle 11gR2 RAC with ASM with asm_preferred_read_failure_group
Hello DBAs,
I apologize first if this question has been posted somewhere.
I have a two nodes cluster so essentially, I have 2 ASM instances (ASM1 & ASM2). It seems like both instances share the same ASM spfile.
+ASM1> show parameter spfile;
NAME TYPE VALUE
spfile string +OCRDG/clone-cluster/asmparame
terfile/registry.253.759424467
=====================================
+ASM2> show parameter spfile;
NAME TYPE VALUE
spfile string +OCRDG/clone-cluster/asmparame
terfile/registry.253.759424467
The Oracle docs says that you can configure asm_preferred_read_failure_group for each instance so when I logged in instance 1, I ran the command:
+ASM1> alter system set asm_preferred_read_failure_groups='DATA.FG1', 'DATA.FG2';
then it showed DATA.FG1 is primary and DATA.FG2 is secondary but this also shows on instance 2 because it uses the same spfile.
How can I make instance 1 uses DATA.FG1 for primary and instance 2 uses DATA.FG2 for primary. I have separate GRID home for each node.
Any help is much appreciated.
thanks,

Any help is much appreciated.Normally we can give different values for each instance, But i never tried in ASM.
Here is example
SQL> alter system set asm_preferred_read_failure_groups='DATA.FG1' sid='ASM1';
SQL> alter system set asm_preferred_read_failure_groups='DATA.FG2' sid='ASM2';So DATA.FG1 will be allocated to ASM1, DATA.FG2 will be allocated to ASM2.
Now check from ASM1
SQL> show parameter asm_preferred_read_failure_group
& from ASM2
SQL> show parameter asm_preferred_read_failure_group

Hi everybody!
I have a problem. Some weeks ago I opened a post related to this issue. We have two dataguards with dataguard broker. One of them is resync (thanks to mseberg and this forum) and now I have problems with the other.
Once I have learned how to configure and start/stop dataguard broker, I have a more basic problem, which is to resync it. I follow a process, where I backup the primary with RMAN, I copy the rman files to the other server with the controlfile, at once, I recover with rman again.
The problem is that it is too big, 2 hours for backing it up more or less, and when I restore it, no archivelog list appears being syncronized.
I have followed the same process than the other one and I can't resync it. I think there is something at my params or something new at 11g version...

Hello ,
we are currently experiencing heavy I/O problmes perfoming prrof of concept
testig for one of our customers. Our setup is as follows:
HP ProLiant DL380 with 24GB Ram and 8 15k 72GB SAS drives
An HP P400 Raid controller with 256MB cache in RAID0 mode was used.
Win 2k8r2 was installed on c (a physical Drive) and the database on E
(= two physical drives in RAID0 128k Strip Size)
With the remaining 5 drives read and write tests were performed using raid 0 with variing number of drives.
I/O performance, as measured with ATTO Disk benchmark, increased as expected linear with the number of drives used.
We expected to see this increased performance in the database, too and performed the following tests:
- with 3 different tables the full table scan (FTS) (Hint: /*+ FULL (s) NOCACHE (s) */)
- a CTAS statement.
The system was used exclusively for testing.
The used tables:
Table 1: 312 col, 12,248 MB, 11,138,561 rows, avg len 621 bytes
Table 2: 159 col, 4288 MB, 5,441,171 rows, avg len 529 bytes
Table 3: 118 col, 360MB, 820,259 rows, avg len 266 bytes
The FTS has improved as expected. With 5 physical drives in a RAID0, a performance of
420MB/s was achieved.
In the write test on the other hand we were not able to archieve any improvement.
The CTAS statement always works with about 5000 - 6000 BLOCK/s (80MB/s)
But when we tried running several CTAS statements in different sessions, the overall speed increased as expected.
Further tests showed that the write speed seems to depend also on the number of columns. 80MB/s were only
possible with Tables 2 and 3. With Table 1, however only 30MB/s were measured.
Is this maybe just an incorrectly set parameter?
What we already tried:
- change the number of db_writer_processes 4 and then to 8
- Manual configuration of PGA and SGA size
- setting DB_BLOCK_SIZE to 16k
- FILESYSTEMIO_OPTIONS set to setall
- checking that Resource Manager are really disabled
Thanks for any help.

If multiple CTAS can produce higher throughput on writes this tells you that it is the production of the data that is the limit, not the writing. Notice in your example that nearly 75% of the time of the CTAS as CPU, not I/O.
The thing about number of columns is that table 1 has exceeded the critical 254 limit - this means Oracle has chained all the rows internally into two pieces; this introduces lots of extra CPU-intensive operations (consistent gets, table access by rowid, heap block compress) so that the CPU time could have gone up significantly, resulting in a lower throughput that you are interpreting as a write problem.
One other thought - if you are currently doing CTAS by "create as select from {real SAP table}" there may be other side effects that you're not going to see. I would do "create test clone of real SAP table", then "create as select from clone" to try and eliminate any such anomalies.

I have a strange problem with my archivelogs (Oracle 11.1.0 on RHEL 5). I have specified:
db_recovery_file_dest=/u01/oracle/flash_recovery_area
- and some of them end up there, but some end up in $ORACLE_HOME/dbs; something that I am certain I have never specified. As far as I can see there are no parameters that would put them in that place (please forgive me for listing the entire 'show parameters') - what is going on here?

How to clear Preferred Read setting
Hi,
I hope someone can advise me how to remove the Preferred Read setting in ASM 11.2.0.3?
I’m trying to set an empty string, but it gives me an error.

Please help.My guess is that you did not run fdisk and partition off the first 1M and ASM overwrote the VTOC rendering the device useless.
fdisk
create new partition
primary partition 1
start 2 end <last cylinder>
Then point your disk string to these partitions (<diskname>p1?)
Once this is done, I ALWAYS test to make sure the oracle AND grid user can read and write to this device from ALL nodes. I use the dd command to do this.
DO NOT DO THIS ON AN ALREADY CONFIGURED AND FUNCTIONING ASM DEVICE. Doing so will erase the device.
make a file in $HOME that contains one line:
cat <<EOF >> $HOME/x.x
this is a test
EOF
node1
dd if=$HOME/x.x of=<disk???p1> bs=20 count=1
node2
dd if=<disk???p1> of=$HOME/y.y bs=20 count=1 ##y.y should be the contents of node1:x.x
node1
dd if=/dev/zero of=<disk???p1> bs=8192 count=1000 ## erase the device for ASM usage.
Fix any read/write issues before proceeding. -

Prerequisites required ASM Migration
Hi ,
Could u please let me know "The prerequisites required before going ahead with the ASM implementation".
Any best practices for disk group confirguration ( I mean how many groups for good performance)
Details of our database:
1) Oracle version : 11.2.0.3
2) OS : Sun solaris 10
3) DB size : 1 TB
I know ASM is part of the Grid Infrastructure. But the current setup was handover from different company and we planned to implement ASM concept here.
Could u please help me out.
Regards,
StevenIt depends. I'm sure that's what they would tell you in the Oracle training class. :)
For starters Oracle recommends two diskgroups named DATA and FRA. If you are using RAC then you will probably create a third diskgroup named CRS.
The redundancy level depends on your storage. If the storage array is providing RAID protection, then you can configure the ASM diskgroups with External Redundancy. But, this is not always the case. You might want to mirror between an external SAN and in internal ioDrive using ASM Normal Redundancy and then set the parameter asm_preferred_read_failure_groups to ensure all reads come from the flash drive. So you see there are countless possibilities that make us say "it depends".
In larger organizations with Enterprise Storage it is rarely so simple. Recall that a diskgroup is a collection of like storage. If you have LUNs of different sizes and performance levels, then you should group the LUNs according to those attributes. Each grouping becomes a diskgroup. For example, never mix RAID 5 LUNs from a Clariion with RAID 5 LUNs from a Symmetrix, and never mix any of those with RAID 10 LUNs. Also, within a diskgroup you want all storage of the same size due to the impact on striping and mirroring. This is all discussed in the Oracle on-line documentation.
If your storage team carves up the array into different classes of storage, then you will probably want to create separate ASM diskgroups. The I/O profiles are completely different for log files versus datafiles, and a well trained storage admin knows how to address each case. So now, if the storage admin gives you high performance LUNs designed for redo logs, lower performance LUNs marked for archivelogs, and a third set of LUNs marked for datafiles, then you will want to create three separate ASM diskgroups named DATA, REDO, and FRA to isolate the storage based on performance characteristics.
Often times with Enterprise Storage you cannot avoid I/O conflicts, so there's no point in separating Oracle's files into their own diskgroups (data, index, redo, etc.) Back on the array you will find the stripes overlay each other. And the array internally ties the storage devices together with either copper or fiber loops, so the I/O's are getting mixed and competing for resources. All I am saying is talk to your storage team and see if they think it will make any difference to try separating tables and indexes into different files given the way they setup the array.
For a small 1 TB database like yours I generally use two ioDrive 1.2 TB PCIe flash memory cards and create one ASM diskgroup named DATA with Normal Redundancy. Bang, done. RAID 10 protection at 5x the performance of a well tuned SAN, and I don't have to wait two weeks for the Enterprise Storage team to carve up LUNs. This takes a great load off the SAN and helps the other enterprise users with their performance issues, and frees up capacity thereby extending the life of the enterprise storage.
The above "answers" are a very generic introduction to planning ASM storage. If you have more specific questions, let us know.

Extremely poor load performance into RDF store
We are seeing unacceptably poor performance loading our RDF models. We have triedloading with Jena adaptor as well as loading using the BatchLoader class. Either way, the absolute best rate we have seen is about 20000/minute. Here are the specs:
Loading a triples file from disk which contains 5.08 million triples
Oracle 11gr2 running on Enterprise Linux64 with 16 GB RAM
Oracle 11gr2 running on Solaris 10 with all the latest patches and packages...64 bit with 8GB RAM
Sun is a bit slower than linux, but both are quite poor. I can load the identical triples file into Allegro running on my desktop PC and consistently get load rates of 1 million per minute.
Can anyone suggest what could be causing this performance issue? Oracle is a very recent install on both the sun and linux boxes, and there is nothing whatsoever running on either one other than oracle, and I am the only oracle user. All install and parameter settings are oracle default.An update on the stats. I changed the way models are created, doing it manually from sqlplus first (vs letting the Jena stuff create the model on the fly), and that made things run about 3 times faster, but I still am not seeing anything better than triple load times of 79K/minute.
Here is the java that runs the load:
String model = "GMI";
oracleGraph = oracleTools.makeGraph(model);
oracleModel = new ModelOracleSem(oracleGraph);
InputStream is = FileManager.get().open(props.getProperty(model +".NTRIPLES_IND_FILE"));
StopWatch timer = new StopWatch();
timer.start();
// read file contents into oracleModel
oracleModel.read(is, "", "N-TRIPLE");
timer.stop();
is.close();
System.out.println("\nLoad time into Oracle: " +timer.getElapsedTimeSecs());
Here is most of the show parameters output:
