Aspect ratios for FCP 5 exportions

To all Mac Fans,
I have filmed a film in HD and editing using FCP 5. I have done this when i export:
file > export > QuickTime Movie > (named the movie) > save
(my settings are "current settings" and the movie is self contained.
Its an 8 minute film.
I dont know if this helps, but i went
final cut pro > easy set up
and my settings are:
sequence preset - HDV 1080i
Capture Preset - HDV
Edit to tape/PTV output Video HDV (1080 x 1440)
However, after exporting and then burning through iDVD when i play it on different sized televisions, i find that some of the image gets cut off. Right now i am presuming that that is due to HD being something like 1080 x 1440 pixels, which is bigger than the average tv which runs on an aspect ratio of 3:4.
a mate of mine suggested that i trim off the edges to each of my sequences, by cropping. However, that is long and time consuming, and due to visual semiotics i feature in my film, i cannot chop off edges of my sequences.
Could someone plesae advise me how to obtain the best quality 4:3 aspect ratio export formatting??
If it is possible, i prefer not to use compressor, as i have read the simple instruction booklets, exported it, but then cannot burn to iDVD.

IPhoto slideshow has wrong aspect ratio for iMovie and/or FCP

When I output a slideshow at 720x480 from iPhoto then import it into iMovie or FCP, the images are stretched vertically. I can adjust the ratio in FCP (-10 seems to be a good number), but there is no fix for iMovie. I like the iPhoto slideshow capability and prefer using it for my slideshows. What do I do to get an unstretched QT for import into iMovie or FCP?

You're encountering a difference between rectangular DV pixels and square "computer screen image" pixels.
When working with DV timelines, the best way to get good frame grabs would be to export your 720 x 480 still, then re-size it to 640 x 480 using Photoshop. (BTW, you can use a Photoshop batch function to re-size multiple images automatically.)
If you're starting with a timeline that only contains square-pixel (not DV video) images, try this:
Sequence > Settings > General Tab
Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square
Now:
Open a clip in the Viewer window, and look under
Motion Tab > Distort Pane
Aspect Ratio should = 0
[Under certain conditions, FCP makes educated guesses as to the pixel aspect ratios of imported images, and uses this setting to automatically apply corrective distortion when it believes it is necessary. Usually it is correct, but under unusual circumstances like your project, you may have to correct FCP's correction.]
The fastest way to confirm this would be to
Select All
Ctrl-Click
Remove Attributes
Check "Distortion"
[If it is greyed out it means that none of your clips have any distortion applied so you are good to go.]
Now you can export un-distorted frames from a square-pixel timeline, and shouldn't experience any pixel-aspect ratio confusion.

XL-H1 aspect ratio error when exporting from FCP 1080p24 to compressor

PLEASE HELP
I have a finished project in fcp in a 1080p24 project.
My source footage is 1440 x 1080i 24f from an xl-h1.
When i export from final cut pro to compressor, compressor squeezes my footage into a square.
if i export to dvd from compressor the ratio is fine.
when i export in quicktime thats where the skewed image happens.

Hi StingoArmy,
There is an easy fix for this. Once you export your file to Compressor, you can apply an export option, let's say we're going to export a LAN Streaming Quicktime movie for Internet. Now click on the new bar that's been placed inside your media tab. The settings for this export item appear below in the Inspector. Just below the DESCRIPTION line are a series of options buttons. Clicking the option 2nd from the right (Geometry) opens up a new tab where you can change the dimensions. There are several ways to go about exporting to 16:9, the one I use is to change the Frame Size to "Custom (16:9)", however, you can also do the same thing by changing the Pixel Aspect to "HDV 1080i (16:9)" You should test results for both and see which is the preferred method for your final output, depending on what type of Quicktime movie you are creating.

Aspect ratio problems when exporting from FCP and creating DVDs

Can anyone help? I'm using FCP to edit material shot using a Sony z1 in SD 16:9 mode. My media displayed correctly in FCP with the 'anamorphic' option ticked in the browser.
I then exported my short films as QuickTime movies and created a DVD in iDVD using those video assets.
When I then viewed the films on a widescreen tv, the films did not display at the correct aspect ratio. They were horizontally elongated, as though they had been stretched twice over, so that objects, people and text appeared fatter than they should.
Can anyone let me know whether there are any settings I could change in either FCP or iDVD to stop this happening?

XML file from '08 has a different aspect ratio in FCP 6?

I have the new canon vixia hg 21 which is avchd and FCP 6 isn't recognizing it. Using Imovie to recognize the files works fine, the problem is that when you export from imovie '08 into FCP via xml, it imports fine, but I get a display issue with black bars surrounding the footage, only in the canvas. It appears fine in the viewer and in it's own sequence in the timeline. But when you mix the different camera footage together, the other being the Canon XH A1, it appears as a different aspect ratio??? What the? and for the life of me, I've re imported using 16:9, no difference...I have no idea what's going on.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You should really take this to the Final Cut Pro forum as the codecs and the interface is different for Final Cut Express.

Changing seq. aspect ratio: crashes FCP

Hi all,
Despite my best intentions, my project contains sequences with different settings, which is causing problems on export. A quick overview of sequence contents and field dominance settings:
- SEQUENCE FIELD DOMINANCE: NONE
- PSD frame-graphic overlay (FD: None)
- QT titles from Keynote w/ transparency (FD: None)
- regular footage (FD: lower)
These field dom settings are the only ones that allow the titles to render crisply.
Rendering out using Compressor, DVD-90 settings. Some sequences render perfectly, but in others, the titles are jagged & blurry when rendered out. The only difference I can find, is in the sequence aspect ratios.
The sequences that render properly, are set at 720x480 NTSC DV (3:2).
The ones that render jagged/blurry titles, are 720x486 CCIR 601 NTSC (40:27). (These display crisply in FCP Canvas, but render improperly.)
When I change a sequence's aspect ratio to NTSC DV 3:2, I get "Operation Not Allowed," then "Out of memory," then the canvas turns red with the words "Display unavailable. Close and reopen window to restore." Sometimes, I get the beachball and then FCP crashes.
Closing and reopening doesn't help; I still have the red window. Only changing back to CCIR 601 brings the sequence back online.
I have tried creating a new sequence and copy/pasting, but I get "Out of memory" etc.
Can anyone advise??

By default Compressor assumes you're providing a 720x480 media file for compression to DVD. This is because DVD players can display only a 720x480 image.
If you send a 720x486 media file through the default Compressor settings, it will squeeze the image vertically to fit 720x480. It typically does not do this well.
If you suspect this is the problem, duplicate the DVD-90 setting, use the Inspector window and click on the Geometry button, select a Custom crop and crop 2 lines from the top and 4 lines from the bottom (always crop in even numbers for DVD playback). Rename and save the setting.

Pixel Aspect Ratio Issues-FCP HELPP!!!

Okay folks, so currently I am putting together my reel in FCP, however I am encountering a few issues. So my source formats are different in pixel aspect ratio, some was shot on the 7D, some on the Alexa, and some on super 16mm, and a few after effects animations. However all of it is HD, and in ProresHQ 422. My problem here is when I import all of my media into FCP if the timeline is set to square pixels, the HD(1440x1080) footage looks squished, and if I set the timeline to HD(1440x1080) the square pixel footage looks blocky, pixelated and super square.
That said, some of the footage from the 7D is labelled as square and some is labelled as HD(1440x1080), and all the after effects stuff is square.
Right now i am dealing with it and just leaving my timeline as green-preview render, so everything looks mostly normal. However whichever format is not that of the timeline, the footage is degraded a tiny bit, so that when I pause the footage it looks great, but in preview it is slightly blurry.
My question is, is there a way to format everything as either square or HD(1440x1080), so it looks normal, or is there a way to use mixed media formats and not have the preview blur. I'm going crazy over here, as I just graduated and am in dire need of a reel so I can begin to apply for jobs, etc....Or is there a way to formate my prores setting to transform everything to square pixels?

You can use compressor to convert everything to square pixels, however there's no need to worry about how it looks in fcp when it's playing but not fully rendered. Try exporting a short section (mark an in and out around the section - and going file: export: quicktime Not quicktime conversion) with current settings. If you render the material, it should look fine when you play it within fcp. Unfortunately, the render settings in the sequence menu are not particularly intuitive, but do a little playing around with them if you've got the time.
I prefer to convert all my sources to my intended pixel dimensions, frame rate and codec before I edit in fcp, but it may not be necessary in your case.

Found the answer, and pretty simple too....yeesh. just click on your clip and go to setting>conform to sequence.

Working with aspect ratio from fcp to dvd sp

I am trying to cut video for use in a dvdsp menu. I have converted video to m2v using compressor. Video looks fine when importing to dvdsp. I try to edit same file in fcp. Everything works except when I export. After I edit m2v in fcp I am unable to make a successful export to dvdsp. I am able to import and add it to menu but the video looses its aspect ratio and is stretched.

But there are more cows on the loose here.
For example, the QuickTime Player Pro ( with its MPEG-2 Playout Component) will always report a square- pixel size of a .m2v file. But this is just reflecting the window size that QT decided to scale the 720x480 (or 720x576) to, because the inability for a computer screen to display non-square pixels.
So it can say that an MPEG-2 file is 640x480 when it is in fact 720x480. Even worse it can tell you 720x404 or 720x540, while none of them are even technically possible to use in MPEG-2.
It is true also that BitVice (1.8x and 2.x) allows you to encode all MPEG-2 legal picture sizes up to and including 720x576, a.k.a MP@ML ( or just SD). However, only a very few of them are legal for DVD, for example, NTSC:
720x480
704x480
352x480
352x240
and PAL
720x576
704x576
352x576
352x288

Aspect ratio query FCP

Hi there, wonder if someone can help with this/
I have filmed a short piece of PAL SD footage in 16:9 format on a Sony Z1 camera.
The finished job is to be 16:9 SD output to DVD PAL.
Can some one confirm what settings I should use from the easy set-up menu for capturing the project? should I be capturing footage as anamorphic?
The reason I ask is that I am being given contrasting info from the chap I am sharing the editing with and don't want to get it wrong from the start.
On his FCP system he is saying that his sequence is NOT set as anamorphic, his browser and canvas viewers are NOT anamorphic, yet he says that the project is still 16:9 ? He says that he is viewing via an external broadcast monitor in 16:9 and only this will show the 16:9 true aspect of the project?
If he clicks sequence settings, sure enough there is NO tick under anamorphic, likewise in the logging list window, yet he still says the finished job will be 16:9, how can this be? i am really confused by this.
I just want the finished job to be as shot from the Sony Z1 camera and to able to view the footage as shot in my browser & canvas windows. I was under the impression that my Z1 footage is anamorphic as it wasn't shot in HDV mode?
Any help would be appreciated

Import it as anamorphic. This will ensure that the right flags are set in QuickTime so it will display correctly on your screen. If you end up sending the final project to tape, either system will still look right when that tape is played, but what's the point of editing in the wrong aspect ratio? The only difference between SD 4:3 and SD 16:9 is that they are displayed differently. The information each format contains is otherwise identical. So go ahead and tick the anamorphic box that Apple have provided so that your pictures are stretched to the correct aspect ratio. In that way everything will look right as you edit, and any graphics you apply won't turn out short and fat in the finished product.

Correct Aspect Ratio for 4:3 and 16:9 SD output

Hi guys,
I've built a slideshow in FC with HD settings (1440 x 1080px), exported via compressor and imported into DVDSP. That's all fine however . . .
The output requested is a DVD playable at 16:9 SD and this is where I have a small problem with the first tests I've done.
To cover all bases, my DVDSP settings are SD 4:3 and HD 1440 x 1080i, 16:9 PanScan and Letterbox. The end result played back on the Mac looks great and the aspect is spot on. The ultimate test was to play it on 2 different DVD players on 2 different PAL TVs and the result is world's apart even after playing with the respective aspect ratio adjustments on the TVs.
My problem is that I don't know what these DVDs will be played on and concerned they'll be cropped off or distorted and unwatchable.
Is there something I'm missing or a way to avoid this uncertainty? My deadline is imminent and any help would be priceless.

What you should do for SD is export the FC timeline out to an SD preset (either PAL or NTSC as applicable) and you need to set the tracks to 16:9 Letterbox, not Pan & Scan or Pan & Scan Letterbox. The track will be 16:9 on 16:9 screens and letterboxed on 4:3 Screens. (You can also set up your own SD Compresser settings, make the aspect raito 16:9.)
People can always mess with settigs so there is no 100% way to ensure it will always look correct, but the above takes care of matters for the most part.
As an aside when you say world's apart, what was happening?

Still image pixel aspect ratio wrong in exported video (but correct in Premiere renders)

I've saved a targa still image from my footage and added it to the bin. It's properties show as follows:
Image Size: 1440 x 1080
Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.3333
This correctly matches my sequence settings as I'm working with 1080p widescreen footage.
The image appears as expected in the Program window both before and after rendering previews. However, once I export my sequence as a video file, the still image is squashed (displaying incorrectly):
A work around would be to stretch out the still to a width of 1920 in Premiere so that the export displays it back at its normal aspect ratio - which works - but I don't understand why I should have to do this.
The other solution I found was to go to the bin and 'Modify > Interpret Footage' and although "Use Pixel Aspect Ratio from File" already shows the correct settings, to actively reset it (to the same pixel aspect ratio) with the 'Conform to' option:
This works too.
Surely a bug?

Thanks for the quick reply. But then why does the still's properties (in my bin) show the pixel aspect ratio as 1.3333 (not square pixels, 1.0) and should it not appear incorrectly in both the preview renders and the exported video ? This seems inconsitent to me.

Sequence Aspect Ratio for HD

I am transferring HD video from AVCHD into FCP 6.0.4, and I need to know what the correct setting is for the aspect ratio (in the sequence preset editor). The footage is captured 1920x1080 at 30p. I plug that all in, but the only choice for plain HD at 16:9 is at 1440x1080. If I want to select 16:9 it's called HDTV 1080i???
Can someone help me understand why there is not a setting for HD 1920x1080 in that window? Is it normal for me to have to select 1440x1080? Even though all the other settings are at 1920x1080???
Also, do i have to check anamorphic 16:9?

I'm sorry, I'm a bit confused.
this time I set up my session/sequence to be for 1440x1080, transferred the media into the session. When I drag my first clip into the Canvas - the FCP pops up a window saying that the clip and the sequence don't match. I tell it to correct it - and it puts it back to the 1920x1080 - HDTV 1080i setting.
What am I doing wrong? Should I be converting it differently?
And which is correct - anamorphic or no???

Custom aspect ratio for Iscorama footage?

I'm planning on shooting some video with an Iscorama anamorphic lens on a Canon EOS 6D. The Iscorama gives the image a 1.5X horizontal squeeze that must be decompressed for the footage to be viewed normally. What I need to do is adjust the aspect ratio in iMovie '11 so that the horizontal dimension is expanded 1.5 times, while the vertical dimension retains its original value. This will result in the original 1.5:1 aspect ratio being rendered as 2.25:1. Is this possible to do in iMovie '11?

Aspect ratio problems in exporting HD movie

Hi
I have a movie shot in 1920x1080p HD from a DSLR. It's two and a half minutes long. There's some titles, a few photoshop layers, a flash file and some simple voiceover audio. Nothing too fancy all in all.
All I need to do is convert it in the same ratio so that it can play in Quick Time, but everytime I put it through the AME, it comes back slightly squished (not 4:3, but definitely not 16:9).
I've tried QT, H.264, Mpeg2, default presets, custom presets, everything. In the output box it displays my video exactly how I'd like it, but the finished product comes out differently.
The only success I've had is exporting as an MPEG4 file, and the aspect ratio comes out good, but the video itself is choppy, which none of the others are.
File sizes have ranged from 230mb to 2.3gb, so eventually I'd like to keep this down, but for now I'll be happy with anything!

I need to eventually put this video into a powerpont presentation created in mac. With a small .mov file that's fine to play on other macs. But I will run into problems when I need that powerpoint presentation to run on a PC. I think I need an MPEG file version to run on a PC.
If that's correct, how do I create a non-jumpy mpeg file that's small enough to go into powerpoint. Can I do that on AME or is it simpler to convert my .mov file in QuickTime to mpeg?
