Assertion Failures using Mail.app with Exchange 2007...

We have been implementing and migrating our end-users to Exchange 2007. In doing so we found that Mail.app end-users were experiencing Assertion failures in Console.app. They used to cause Mail.app to crash and lose connectivity frequently to the Exchange 2007 server. We made a change to the firewall to allow communication to happen between domain controllers, but haven't been able to determine if this in fact resolved or helped hide the root cause. We seem to be no longer crashing Mail.app or losing connectivity, but the same logs when we would crash/lose connectivity are still happening when you look in Console.app.
*Here is an example of an Assertion failure where "The Operation couldn't be completed":*

We are getting these Assertion Failures for other end-users as well that are using Mail.app and connecting to Exchange 2007 Server. I have wiped my mail.app account and started from fresh and that didn't help. I did it manually as well ensuring that preference files, caches, and passwords related to mail.app, ical.app, and Address Book.app were removed. That did not work. I just went from 10.6.4 to 10.6.5 hoping that would correct the issue, it did not. I even set up on another Mac a baseline Snow Leopard and patched it and then configured my mail account and still got the same errors.
What I am hoping for is not a miracle (Fixing the problem), but being told what these errors mean and if there is any risks to be concerned with. In other words, can I ignore these error messages or should I be concerned? Like I said it was causing us to get the sideways thunderbolt or triangle with an exclamation point and even crashing Mail.app at times. That hasn't happened since we let the all of the domain controllers talk to each other, even though they shouldn't have to.

I echo your hope for someone shedding a light on this. I too am geting Assertion failures, every few days, though without much in the way of crashes.
Here is an example of a log entry describing one recent such failure:
+5.12.2010 11:04:40 Mail[17075] * Assertion failure in -[EWSGetFolderResponseOperation handleResponseMessage:withObject:], /SourceCache/Message/Message-1082/MessageStores.subproj/EWSResponseOperation.m: 420+

Perhaps coincidentally, I am having trouble with syncing iCal with my Exchange account. Ii have only found this thread on the subject, and am in the process of trying to find there the solution to that problem:

Any and all insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hi guys,

No workaround needed, open Mail, Contacts and Calendars (in System Preferences) select Exchange, enter your email address and password, opt to setup Contacts and Calendars as well as mail and hit enter. That should set it up (assuming your apparently witless IT dept has setup the autodiscover record correctly at their end)

• Multiple mailboxes when using mail.app with google in IMAP.

Hello,
I have just started using mail.app with IMAP and my google mail account appears to be in two place. The mail.app has the following interface in the left pane.
MAILBOXES, REMINDERS, RSS and GMAIL all in grey. Below the MAILBOXES i have got the following folders, inbox, sent and trash and below the GMAIL, i have got a replication of the structure in my google account.
which set of folders should i be using?
when i deleet the mail in the MAILBOXES it does not seem to delete it in All Mail folder under GMAIL.
IS the synchronisation between the mails in the mail.app and the google server on a periodic basis. can i force the synchronisation?

Mail works fine with Exchange 2003. This is how our accounts are configured:
Incoming Mail Server:your exchange server.domain.com.au
eg. server2.bunnings.com.au
Username: domain\User alias\Full username
eg. bunnings\bobs\bob.smith
SMTP: smtp.bunnings.com.au
Web Access Server: webmail.bunnings.com.au
You can then setup the LDAP options under the composing tab to get the email list from your Exchange server.
And no i do not work for Bunnings!
Good Luck!

• Symantec Mail Security with Exchange 2007 (Emails with Attachment missing)

HI, i need help here
I have Win 2008 with Exchange 2007 and Symantec Mail Security. Symantec was working fine until the license expired but it was still fine until yesterday, we realize that we cannot receive email with attachment. after stopping the symantec services, mail
flow went back to normal. We then remove the program from the control panel.
Then i found that i cant retrieve or find those emails that was sent to us during a period of ard 6 hours. i tried looking the the Symantec quarantine folder but it is not there.
Can someone point to me where should i look for the missing mails? When i do a mail flow troubleshoot i can see the logs that it is sent to the mailbox, but from users's outlook inbox, there is no email ??
Much Appreciated

Symantec's support group should be able to tell you what happened.

• Mail.app and Exchange 2007 with Rollup 3 ... anyone get it to work?

Spent way too much time on this...
After finding our our Exchange 2007 server didn't have the legacy components installed to ensure WebDav would work, we can now connect to our Exchange 2007 mail server from Microsoft Entourage for all Windows Active Directory accounts.
For Apple Mail however, this is not the case. Opening mail, the account information does default in accurately (email, userID, exchange 2007 server) when I enter a users password, it says that it is unable to connect to mail server user/password failed.
If I manually create the account, the same thing occurs, a pop-up appears prompting for a password, which I enter and it comes back saying it isn't valid.
The password is valid because on the same Mac I open up Entourage and log in.
Keychain is NOT used and none of the passwords are held because of the headaches this causes.
Looking for ideas, thinking this is more of an Apple Mail.app bug not working with Exchange than a Microsoft issue.

Just want to add to this...it was resolved the Advanced tab is very important on mail.app.
The Advance tab authentication must match what the Exchange server/Active Directory is using.
For us NTLM is what we need to use.
Also we found that one exchange server had a bad installation while another had no problem connecting via mail.app.
Thus the installation is going to be looked at.

• Mail attachment assertion failure Yosemite - Mail app bug

Hi,
I am facing a very annoying issue with Mail app. Since the upgrade to Yosemite, I am unable to save attachments with the "save all" button and the drag and drop is not working properly (sometime freezing the mail app for a minute). I am using Yosemite 10.10.2
I tried every fix I have read online, such as :
- rebuild mailboxes
- repair permissions
- remove 3 enveloppe index files in .../V2/MailData
- reindex spotlight
- run the command to repair permissions & reset home directory permissions and ACL (from this post : Mavericks Mail "Save Attachement..." doesn't work)
- onyx automations...
Nothing presented above fixed the problem.
Here are the console logs related to the issue :

• Mail app with Exchange memory leak

I have Mail 5.3 on 10.7.5 running with one Exchange account and no other accounts. Every time I press the "Get new messages" button, or when it automatically does that, memory usage for the Mail app jumps by 3-5MB. Over time, this becomes substantial. I left Mail running on my work computer over the long weekend and came back to find it using over 4GB of RAM! A quit-restart of Mail drops it back to 70MB usage, but it grows again.
Anyone else experience this? Is it related to the Exchange account? Any known fixes?
Thanks!

I think I found a solution. I was having trouble with Exchange, so I deleted the account then set it up again. After that process, I found that the Mail app no longer eats memory. Give it a try!

• Mail.app with Exchange - all folders will not sync - is there a fix or is this a defect

I am tryinf to switch from Outlook to Mail - running Mavericks and new 7.0 mail app. Inbox appears to have synced but other folders within inbox are empty and have tried to rebuild several times. Thoughts? I do have a lot of messages.

Self-hosted add-ons have to be fixed for every new version of Firefox. Two to 6 months for updating an add-on is ridiculous for a program which has a new version release every '''6 weeks'''. If that extension was hosted at the official Add-ons website, Mozilla would take take care of "bumping" that extension, as long as it keeps working, for every new version of Firefox, as the new version is released.
See this thread from yesterday, I posted instructions about how to "bump" that extension for Firefox 7.
https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/884484
You can also use this extension to "bump" an already installed extension for compatibility with the currently installed version of Firefox.
• Mail.app and Exchange 2007

I'm trying to interface the Mac OS X Mail application to an Exchange 2007 server. I've configured Mail to use IMAP, and I've verified that IMAP is enabled on the server because I can receive mail just fine.
I cannot send mail, however.
What kind of authentication does Exchange 2007 require for relaying outgoing SMTP mail? The Mac OS X Mail application has a number of settings for this, but none of the combinations I've tried seem to work.

What kind of authentication does Exchange 2007 require for relaying outgoing SMTP mail?
What authentication method used is based on how the server is setup. Nobody here can anwer that. You'll need to ask your mail server admins.

• Using mail.app with Yahoo

Hi Guys. I have a Yahoo Plus account, which means I can download and send emails using a third party mail application like Apple's mail.app. On my iPhone I have my Yahoo account configured and it works like IMAP(I'm not sure if it is IMAP or not). It detects the folders I have on the server, It respects the rules I have applied on my Yahoo account, deletes messages from server when I delete them on the iPhone, etc.
My doubt is, can I have that kind of behaviour in the mail.app? Right now it works as a simple pop3 server. It only downloads the messages and sends them. I can't actually see the folder on the server, etc.
Do you guys understand what I mean?
Thanks a lo everyone,
Jorge

The OS X Mail application understands IMAP. Have you tried to create an IMAP account for your Yahoo mail?

• Can not use mail offline with Exchange/Activesync

I love the touch and have had no problems configuring it to work with my enterprise exchange server. When online connected by wifi, I can send, retrieve, delete and move without a problem. When I am offline not connected by wifi, I can send, reply and forward BUT I can not delete or move a message. When I try to do so, I get an error about being unable to access the trash folder.
I have tried everything including turning off push, pull to manual, delete and re-enter exchange account, tried a different exchange account, genius bar but it seems that I am the only one with this issue.
Thoughts?

Agreed, same problem here... resolution?

• Using mail.app, exchange password expired, missing messages

Using Mail.app with an exchange account. Unknowingly my password had expired. I wrote lots of emails and pressed send. Got the 'whoosh' so I thought everything was ok. Subsequently I discovered my password had expired as I was not receiving new emails.
I then discovered the emails I was working on had not been sent (not in the exchange sent, outbox or drafts).
They are not locally in Mail.app, I can't find them in any of the local folders. What has happened? Is this a bug.
Any idea where the messages are please, 5 hours work down the drain if I can't recover them.
TIA.

Mail works fine with Exchange 2003. This is how our accounts are configured:
Incoming Mail Server:your exchange server.domain.com.au
eg. server2.bunnings.com.au
Username: domain\User alias\Full username
eg. bunnings\bobs\bob.smith
SMTP: smtp.bunnings.com.au
Web Access Server: webmail.bunnings.com.au
You can then setup the LDAP options under the composing tab to get the email list from your Exchange server.
And no i do not work for Bunnings!
Good Luck!

• Duplicate Notes in Mail.app w/Exchange server

Latest version of Mail.app and Exchange 2007 server.
What we are experiencing is that a users NOTES will not replace when edited but leave new versions over and over and over again. Mail is not cleaning out the old versions correctly.
If you go back later and open the most "recent" version sometime the old ones will disappear sometime not.
This is a mirror of the "drafts" duplication issue which was corrected in 10.6.3
Anyone has seen this issue please contact me through this thread.
Thanks
Robert

I'm having the same issue with an Exchange account. I cannot create non-Exchange Notes, and every note I work on drops a new one not just with ever save, but every few seconds as I edit the note. After a few minutes working on a long note, I have a dozen older "revisions" that it plonked down as I was working. I have to delete them when I'm "done", and sometimes if I delete all but the last one... the last ("real/current") edit also disappears.
On top of that mess, I have it set not to display notes in the inbox, and yet it does. What a mess.

• Cannot sort emails sent from Mail App and Exchange

When trying to sort emails on Outlook in Windows, lets say by "Flag", emails coming from a mac using mail app and exchange get placed at the top of the list.
Have tried sending emails from the same account via webmail and iphone and they get sorted correctly.
Anyone has had this problem?

So, Here's what happens:
1) Send email from Laptop (Snow Leopard) with Exchange Integration
2) Send email from iPhone (3.1) with Exchange Integration
In Outlook 2003 sort by flag (neither of these messages are flagged). Any email sent from the Snow Leopard is sorted first in the Unflagged category in Outlook. Any of the email sent from the iPhone is sorted normally.
There's no differences in the headers to cause these to sort differently. The only headers that differ are the Date, Subject/Thread-Topic, Thread-Index, Message-ID, x-ems-stamp. But, in the Message-ID it has the same domain.
Both Snow Leopard and iPhone are configured to use the same Exchange OWA/OWS.

• Outlook 2013 with Exchange 2007 - out of office problem

We are using outlook 2013 with Exchange 2007. When users select their out of office it will work fine for the first day, however there after the Out of Office replies stop working. Out of Office is set correctly within Outlook, but what we have found
is that if the user opens Outlook the Out of Office starts to work again. Also when the user opens Outlook it takes around two minutes before it registers that Out of Office is on.
Any Ideas?

Hi,
How do you configure your OOF? From standard OOF wizard or define an automatic reply template from Rule wizard?
If you are using a template, Outlook must be running for the Rules Wizard to automatically reply. Please refer to the Note in the following KB:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/311107
If it is configured by using standard Out of Office assistance in File > Automatic Replies, please remove OOF settings in Outlook and set it from OWA 2007, then check whether the issue can be reproduced.
