Assigning keyboard layout automatically to certain applications?

i want to assign my keyboard layout to automatically switch to swedish or US when i switch to certain applications. the reason is because of some keyboard layout collision with shortcuts bug in some applications.
example: i use swedish layout in my writing apps like text edit, mail and ichat, and US layout in some of my working apps because of the shortcut bug problems. so when i switch to ichat i want the keyboard layout to autmomatically switch to swedish and when i switch back to the working app id like it to switch to US.
so far ive used the input menu, but its a drag doing that all the time, i did assign the input menu switching to a shortcut which makes the process a bit easier but sometimes i tend to forget to do it and the application shortcuts stop functioning when i activate the buggy app and i have to restart it. ugh!
also i tried with checking the "allow a different input source......" setting in international but its just really what im looking for.
anyway, it gets really annoying doing this manually everytime when switching, which i do really often.
is there a way to do this, maybe some third party application? i've tried to google it but i didnt find an app that lets me do such a configuration.
powerbook hi-res 7200rpm   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

im not sure how that OS9 keyboard layout thing works
but im not using classic at all on my computer.
The point is that you can use OS9 keyboard layouts that are based on KCHR resources in OS X just by changing the name and installing them in Users/username/Library/Keyboard Layouts. I have no idea if it would solve your problem, but I think it would be worth a try. You can download Swedish.rsrc here (using a Mac):
http://homepage.mac.com/thgewecke/fs/FileSharing9.html
Another approach is to take a keyboard that does work and try editing it so it works like a Swedish layout even though programs think it is US or whatever.

  • Assign Keyboard Layout to Application

    Hi all,
    Is there a way to assign a specific keyboard layout to just one application so that only this one uses it and all others still use the default layout?
    Thank you very much for any idea!

    In KDE I could set the keyboard layout to be application-specific. Is it possible to do the same with Leopard?
    No, but see if this helps:

  • Hiding Dock Automatically For Certain Applications.

    I really don't like the way the dock and Adobe CS4 applications compete for the same screen space. Is there any way to turn on dock hiding automatically for certain applications?

    Thanks. That's exactly what I'm looking for. However, while the Info.plist files for Photoshop and Illustrator match the example in the article, the one for InDesign is completely different: http://anonymousonlineserver.com/Info.plist
    Any idea how to make the trick work with InDesign? Thanks.

  • Keyboard layout broken in some applications

    Good evening everyone,
    I recently updated to 10.5.4 with the combo update. I used to have a custom keyboard layout (made from a AZERTY layout) with some key combinations I use in my workflow, etc. But ever since this update, some applications just skip it and use the QWERTY layout instead (eventhough the localization of Mac OS X is set to French, my mother tongue).
    The incrimined applications that I spotted so far are Fireworks CS3 and World of Warcraft.
    If I open International preferences and turn on the menu bar language switcher, US layout isn't even checked and my custom layout do is the default/current one.
    Again, I hadn't this behaviour before the update this morning.
    Has anyone any clues of what is going on? Should I tell Apple about this problem?
    Jérôme Verzier.

    Looks familiar to me. Does this help?

  • Assign keyboard layout switch hotkey not listed in the keyboard applet

    I found some old tutorial to assign left alt+shift to 1st layout and right alt+shift to 2nd layout. How to adapt it to the modern hal way?
    Here it is:
    create $XKBROOT/mysym :
    partial modifier_keys xkb_symbols "shift_ctrl_1" {
    key <LFSH> {
    type="PC_BREAK",
    symbols[Group1]= [ Shift_L, ISO_First_Group ]
    key <RTSH> {
    type ="PC_BREAK",
    symbols[Group1]= [ Shift_R, ISO_Last_Group ]
    key <LCTL> { [ Control_L, ISO_First_Group ] };
    key <RCTL> { [ Control_R, ISO_Last_Group ] };
    add 1 line to $XKBROOT/rules/xorg (after "! option    =    symbols"):
    ! option = symbols
    myshiftctrl1 = +mysym(shift_ctrl_1)
    add option to xorg.conf :
    ! option = symbols
    Section "InputDevice"
    Option "XkbOptions" "myshiftctrl1"
    EndSection

    Found a temporary solution. Unfortunately It resets other options set in the corresponding gnome applet;
    Instead of alt+shift it sets shift+alt to change layout. I tried to swap the key names in 'mysym' file, but it has no effect.
    #!/bin/sh
    xkbdir="`mktemp -d`" || exit $?
    mkdir "$xkbdir/symbols"
    cat>"$xkbdir/symbols/mysym" <<EOF
    partial modifier_keys xkb_symbols "alt_shift_1" {
    key <LALT> {
    type="PC_BREAK",
    symbols[Group1]= [ Alt_L, ISO_First_Group ]
    key <RALT> {
    type ="PC_BREAK",
    symbols[Group1]= [ Alt_R, ISO_Last_Group ]
    key <LFSH> { [ Shift_L, ISO_First_Group ] };
    key <RTSH> { [ Shift_R, ISO_Last_Group ] };
    EOF
    setxkbmap -symbols "pc+us+ru:2+inet(evdev)+mysym(alt_shift_1)" -print | xkbcomp -w0 -I -I"$xkbdir" -I/usr/share/X11/xkb - $DISPLAY && rm -rf "$xkbdir"

  • My keyboard layout has changed. I no longer have an @ key.

    About an hour ago, my keyboard layout changed (but only when using firefox) so that, for example, Shift+2 no longer produces @, but rather double quotes ("). Also, pressing the [ key now produces nothing, but the next key I hit after it will produce a hat. Example, the [ key and a g will give ^g. There are other peculiarities, such as the / key now shows é, and a few others.
    Everything I check on the internet seems to be telling me the problem lies in my keyboard layout settings in Windows, and possibly having to press LeftAlt+LeftShift (or just Alt+Shift) to readjust them, or bringing up the language bar, etc. But all of my efforts to fix language indicate to me that I'm currently operating with a US keyboard layout (which is what it`s supposed to be), and again, this ONLY happens in firefox and no other programs.
    Any ideas?

    It is possible that you have switched the keyboard layout by accident.
    * Make sure that you have the Language bar visible on the Windows Taskbar.
    * You can do that via the right-click context menu of the Taskbar: Toolbars > Language Bar.
    * Check the keyboard language (keyboard layout) setting for the application that has focus via the icon on the Language bar.
    * You need to do that while Firefox has focus because Windows remembers the keyboard layout setting per application.
    * The default keys to rotate the layout is a combination (Ctrl+Shift or Alt+Shift) that can easily be used in Firefox to activate a menu item.
    * To avoid an unintentional switch assign a specific key sequence (Alt/Ctrl+Shift+number) to select keyboard layouts and remove the key combination to rotate layouts (Alt+Shift or Ctr+Shift)

  • Multiple keyboard layouts in Tiger

    Dear all,
    I am experiencing some issues with the keyboard switching tool.
    basically, I have 3 layouts: Japanese, French and German.
    I configured those in the System Preferences / International and configured OS X to use the selected keyboard layout between all documents (this should prevent each app/window from switching layout atomatically)
    Now, the problem I have is that whenever I switch between AdiumX, Safari, Mail, Terminal and Finder(no specific order), at some point, my keyboard layout automatically changes back to French.
    This happens starting from a freshly booted Max OS X, where the first thing I do is set my keyboard to Japanese and then I start the various applications I use (mail, safari, AdiumX, Terminal).
    I would like to know if anyone has experienced the same behavior and which way I can fix this as this is a huge restrain in the workflow.
    Many thanks for future help!
    Alexis

    Hmm yeah, I do know the standard having grown up with it. But at least on all the other keyboards I had been using so far the characters are shown on the keys....
    Anyway, as to your question: I do find it feasible for the purpose I use either layout for.
    When using the German layout, I’m typing text, with a lot of umlaut-characters - äöüß etc. Clearly, the German layout is better suited than the US where you have to use weird combinations for these characters.
    In addition, I do a lot of Matlab-programming and LaTeX typesetting, esp. with a lot of formulas. And as those languages are designed, {},[],\, etc. are some of the most frequently appearing characters. For this task, I definitely prefer the US layout, where these characters can be easily acessed. And since m-files don’t even allow umlauts, and because all of my scientific stuff (LaTeX formulas etc.) is en English anyway, I don’t miss the umlauts here.

  • Firefox keyboard layout changes to something I don't recognize, the traditional [ QWERTY ] reads as [ ',.pyf ] any idea why this would happen or how to change it back short of killing firefox and restarting.

    This happens randomly and infrequently. At first I thought it was my cats fault but it has recently happened while I was sitting at the computer with no feline interference. If someone could let me know how, if it's possible, to change the keyboard layout to QWERTY I will try this next time it happens to see if it can be corrected without restarting firefox. For a larger sample I will include the lines below:
    The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog
    yd. 'gcjt xpr,b urq hgmlo rk.p yd. na;f eri
    This is only effecting firefox, no other programs are changed and it does effect all running and new instances of firefox.

  • How can i disable Illustrator from changing my language / keyboard layout.

    I have an azerty laptop and a qwerty external keyboard. Switching from any application to illustrator changes the language and therefore also my keyboard layout. No other application does this.

    Thanks for the reply Mike
    But i have a laptop with azerty layout (Belgian) and an external qwerty keyboard (Brittish).
    So i need both languages selected in the System Pref >> Keyboard >> Input source
    When "Brittish" is selected and i switch from Apple Mail to Photoshop to Skype to Chrome to ... it all works fine.
    Only when i switch to Illustrator it also changes my language/layout from "Brittish" to "Belgian" and stays like that. I need to manually change it back in the menu in Finder.
    I like the brittish better (with a qwerty keyboard) because of the shortcuts (eg. sqare brackets -> shortcuts for order in Illustrator are not even on an azerty (Belgian) keyboard).
    Any idea?

  • Keyboard layout

    We are testing a java application under web start
    on a machine with two keyboard layouts (windows 2000).
    it seems that web start switches the selected
    keyboard layout arbitrary,
    sometimes english and sometimes german.
    Does anybody have experiences with this problem ?

    Yes, I mean the tray keyboard change:
    It switches back and forth.
    I do not switch the keyboard layout in the
    JAVA application, it seems that
    Web Start switches it by any reason.
    This does not happen on every machine

  • Assign German keyboard layout to English input source?

    I have a MacBook Pro with a German keyboard layout (physical). If I change the input source to US English, Mac would not recoginze the German keyboard layout (i.e. it prints Z when I press Y). Is there a way to assign German keyboard layout to the US English input source? So I can type English using the physical German keyboard.
    The reason why i need US English input source is MS Office for Mac automatically changes the proofing language based on the input source.
    i have ukelele installed but am not sure the best way to do it.

    Plus for the default template if you want
    "Open a blank document. On the Tools menu choose language. Choose the language version you want to use. Click the DEFAULT button to change that to the default language. Close the dialog and then quit Word. When prompted whether you want to save changes to the Normal template (that's the default template), choose yes, you do want to save the changes."

  • Some applications don't put accents with non-english keyboard layouts

    I'm using a Portuguese keyboard with three different macs running Mac OS Tiger 10.4.8/9. Some applications (like Motion 2 and Swift Publishing 2) don't allow writing some accented characters, like (è) or (ê), that are accessed by Shift+normal key, but they do display correctly other accented letters, for instance (é), witch are accessed directly without the Shift key. This happens only in some applications and with a european keyboard layout (I tried it also with the spanish and french keyboards layouts), but not with other applications (it works all right with Word or iPhoto) and the english keyboards.
    Any sugestion as how to solve this? If I create the text in some other application and paste it in Motion it works! But it's a drag.

  • Application hotkeys and keyboard layouts in KDE[SOLVED]

    Hi,
    For as long as I use Linux, I've been annoyed by this particular trouble: change layout from en to ru, for instance, and get your hotkeys (like Ctrl-S) unresponsive. Granted, that the trouble sometimes goes - to come back later on . I tried Google, but no luck. Which is kinda funny, because any bilingual user must be all too familiar with the issue. I can't even be sure whether it's some systemwide setting or an application responsibility.
    Now I've run into a something like a perfect testcase :
    OpenOffice 3.0.1 and Firefox 3.0.8:
    (1) In Arch the hotkeys like Ctrl-S and Ctrl-T work in both apps regardless of the keyboard layout. (KDE3 and KDE4)
    (2) In Pardus the hotkeys in both apps work in en layout but do not in ru layout. (KDE3)
    What is it?
    Last edited by Llama (2009-04-05 13:27:48)

    Control Center(KDE)->Keyboard Layout->Layout->Include latin layout checkbox needs to be checked. After that Command lines for the respective layouts look like
    setxkbmap -model pc104 -layout us
    setxkbmap -model pc104 -layout ru,us -variant ,winkeys
    The trouble's gone.

  • Why do certain applications open automatically

    why do certain applications open automatically?

    If you're using Lion, and the apps open automatically when you start up/log in, it's down to one of two things. Either
    a) you had the application open when you shut down last time, or
    b) you have that application set to open automatically.
    If you don't want (a) happening, either quit the application completely before you shut down, or turn off all app resuming through System Preferences - General - untick "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps".
    If the apps re-open even if you quit them before shutting down, check System Preferences - Accounts - Login Items. Delete any programs from the list that you don't want auto-launching when you log in.
