Assigning letters of the alphabet to characters from a .txt file

To say in advance, I am relatively new to java, and really have trouble wrapping my mind around some of these things sometimes, so bear with me if I sound like Im rambling or don't know what I'm talking about. What Im trying to do is basically get some input from the user, read from a file of letters (one letter per line) in the order that they should be assigned to the alphabet. So the list starts off like this (parenthesis are just for example and are not in the file):
y (a)
7 (b)
z (c)
x (d)
c (e)
o (f)
5 (g)
4 (h)
j (i)
r (j)
If the user types in "abe", I need to find a way for the system to translate that to "y7c". Im also looking to do this the opposite way, so the user types in "y7c" and the output is "abe". I've got it separated so that you type in "translate" to convert normal text to the code, and "convert" to start the process change the code to normal text.
Its the actual translating and converting where Im stuck. Heres my all my code (not all of it is mine, but for the most part it is):
public class cypher1 {
     static Scanner query = new Scanner(System.in);
     String alpha[]; {
               alpha = new String[26];
               alpha[0]= "a";
               alpha[1]= "b";
               alpha[2]= "c";
               alpha[3]= "d";
               alpha[4]= "e";
               alpha[5]= "f";
               alpha[6]= "g";
               alpha[7]= "h";
               alpha[8]= "i";
               alpha[9]= "j";
               alpha[10]= "k";
               alpha[11]= "l";
               alpha[12]= "m";
               alpha[13]= "n";
               alpha[14]= "o";
               alpha[15]= "p";
               alpha[16]= "q";
               alpha[17]= "r";
               alpha[18]= "s";
               alpha[19]= "t";
               alpha[20]= "u";
               alpha[21]= "v";
               alpha[22]= "w";
               alpha[23]= "x";
               alpha[24]= "y";
               alpha[25]= "z";
     int num[]; {
          num= new int[9];
          num[0]= 1;
          num[1]= 2;
          num[2]= 3;
          num[3]= 4;
          num[4]= 5;
          num[5]= 6;
          num[6]= 7;
          num[7]= 8;
          num[8]= 9;
          num[9]= 0;
     public static void main(String[] args) {
     try {
          FileInputStream fstream = new FileInputStream("C:\\Documents and Settings\\HP_Administrator\\workspace\\Cypher\\Cypher.txt");
          DataInputStream in = new DataInputStream(fstream);
               BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(in));
          String strLine;
          while ((strLine = br.readLine()) != null) {
          System.out.println("Enter 'translate' or 'convert'");
          in.close();
     } catch (Exception e) {
          System.err.println("Error: " +e.getMessage());
     String input = query.nextLine();
     if (input.equals("translate")) {
          System.out.println("You chose to Translate");
          String transTxt;
          System.out.println("Enter text to translate: ");
          transTxt = query.nextLine();
          String[] newStringArray = new String[transTxt.length()];
          for(int i = 0;i < transTxt.length();i++){
             newStringArray[i] = transTxt.substring(i, i+1);
          if (input.equals("convert")) {
               System.out.println("You chose to convert");
               String conTxt;
               System.out.println("Enter text to convert: ");
               conTxt = query.nextLine();
               String[] newStringArray = new String[conTxt.length()];
               for(int i = 0;i < conTxt.length();i++){
                  newStringArray[i] = conTxt.substring(i, i+1);
}I've got the code from the "cypher" file read, but Im thinking I might run across some issues since the code that reads from the file is not mine, and may not be exactly what I need. But my main question is how do I match each character from the input with its other character from the file? It's there that I am completely lost. I don't even have a clue how to start that.
Any advice at all would be amazing!

Any advice at all would be amazing!First, I agree with Kevin that Maps (especially HashMaps) would probably be ideal but, assuming you're not familiar with them just yet and want to use arrays, some pointers:
1. Since your translator is character-based, use arrays of characters (ie, char or Character), not Strings. For example, your 'alpha' array could be set up with:
private char[] alpha = "abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz".toCharArray();Characters can be extracted from Strings using [String.charAt()|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E17409_01/javase/6/docs/api/java/lang/String.html#charAt%28int%29].
2. Finding characters will be much quicker if the array is sorted. Have a look at the Arrays class for some useful methods.
3. Decide what you want to do if the supplied string contains an invalid character. Common practice is to throw an Exception, but you might want to display a message and get the user to re-enter.
4. You use the terms "translate" and "convert". I'd suggest "encode" and "decode" would be more explicit to a user.
5. I'm not quite sure what your 'num' array is meant to do. If numbers are included in your code, then they should be included in your 'alpha' array (which makes the name a bit misleading).
6. You don't appear to be encoding spaces. Is this what you want?
7. You need a way of associating a character in one array with its corresponding character in the other. One way to do that would be to create a nested class:
private static class AssociatedCharacter {
   private char c;
   private int associatedIndex;
}and then set up arrays of 'AssociatedCharacters'. An alternative is to set up an array of indexes for each array of characters, viz:
private char[] alpha = "abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz".toCharArray();
private char[] encoded = new char[alpha.length]; // load with your "encoded" characters
private int[] alpha2encoded = new int[alpha.length];and then load it with the index that corresponds to it's encoded version in the other array. Obviously, you'll need an 'encoded2alpha' to go the other way, and it may be a bit more difficult since 'encoded' should be sorted too.

  • Selecting the first 4000 characters from a tag in an xml file

    Oracle Enterprise Edition 11.1.0.7 64 bit (Jan 2012 CPU applied)
    Windows 2003 64 bit
    We have an XML file with the following sample format.
    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <HR>
    <EMP>
    <FNAME>JOHN</FNAME>
    <LNAME>DOE</LNAME>
    <COMMENT>Comment with less than 4000 characters</COMMENT>
    </EMP>
    <EMP>
    <FNAME>JANE</FNAME>
    <LNAME>DOE</LNAME>
    <COMMENT>Comment with more than 4000 characters</COMMENT>
    </EMP>
    </HR>
    The query below
    (full disclosure: which I took from odie_63's response in Creating External Table using Xml Dataset - how to include null values? and added the CURSOR_SHARING_EXACT hint on the top)
    works when the contents of the <Comment> tag are smaller than 4000 characters. If it is more than 4000 I get
    ORA-01706: user function result value was too large
    SELECT /*+ CURSOR_SHARING_EXACT */
    FROM XMLTable(
    '/HR/EMP'
    passing xmltype( bfilename('DATA_PUMP_DIR','emp.xml'), nls_charset_id('CHAR_CS') )
    columns
    first_name varchar2(30) path 'FNAME',
    last_name varchar2(30) path 'LNAME',
    comments varchar2(4000) path 'COMMENT'
    I found another query where someone was doing a substring (I think to get only the first 4000 characters from the tag) here.
    http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=14638197 (See OP's post)
    TERMINATION_DATE VARCHAR(32) path 'TerminateDate/substring(text(), 1, 32)',
    So I updated my query to be
    SELECT /*+ CURSOR_SHARING_EXACT */
    FROM XMLTable(
    '/HR/EMP'
    passing xmltype( bfilename('DATA_PUMP_DIR','emp.xml'), nls_charset_id('CHAR_CS') )
    columns
    first_name varchar2(30) path 'FNAME',
    last_name varchar2(30) path 'LNAME',
    comments varchar2(4000) path 'COMMENT/substring(text(),1,4000)'
    The query runs without an error when the <comment> tag has 4000 or less characters but still errors out with it is more than 4000.
    I found an alternative method to do the SUBSTRING here in Herald ten Dam's reponse in Re: A view over XML that is not 1:1
    code varchar2(30) path 'substring(code,1,3)',
    so I tried this:
    SELECT /*+ CURSOR_SHARING_EXACT */
    FROM XMLTable(
    '/HR/EMP'
    passing xmltype( bfilename('DATA_PUMP_DIR','emp.xml'), nls_charset_id('CHAR_CS') )
    columns
    first_name varchar2(30) path 'FNAME',
    last_name varchar2(30) path 'LNAME',
    comments varchar2(4000) path 'substring(COMMENT,1,4000)'
    but that doesn't work either.
    How can I extract the first 4000 characters of the <COMMENT> tag so that the query doesn't fail.
    We are not using any other XMLDB features at this time. This is the first we've started looking into using Oracle built in XML features, so we might not have setup something that other's might know to specifically setup to start using the XML features in Oracle 11.1
    Thanks in advance,
    Wally

  • Reading characters from a text file into a multidimensional array?

    I have an array, maze[][] that is to be filled with characters from a text file. I've got most of the program worked out (i think) but can't test it because I am reading my file incorrectly. However, I'm running into major headaches with this part of the program.
    The text file looks like this: (It is meant to be a maze, 19 is the size of the maze(assumed to be square). is free space, # is block, s is start, x is finish)
    This didn't paste evenly, but thats not a big deal. Just giving an idea.
    19
    5..................
    And my constructor looks like follows, I've tried zillions of things with the input.hasNext() and hasNextLine() to no avail.
    Code:
    //Scanner to read file
    Scanner input = null;
    try{
    input = new Scanner(fileName);
    }catch(RuntimeException e) {
    System.err.println("Couldn't find the file");
    System.exit(0);
    //Set the size of the maze
    while(input.hasNextInt())
    size = input.nextInt();
    //Set Limits on coordinates
    Coordinates.setLimits(size);
    //Set the maze[][] array equal to this size
    maze = new char[size][size];
    //Fill the Array with maze values
    for(int i = 0; i < maze.length; i++)
    for(int x = 0; x < maze.length; x++)
    if(input.hasNextLine())
    String insert = input.nextLine();
    maze[i][x] = insert.charAt(x);
    Any advice would be loved =D

    Code-tags sometimes cause wonders, I replaced # with *, as the code tags interprets # as comment, which looks odd:
    ******...*.........To your code: Did you test it step by step, to find out about what is read? You could either use a debugger (e.g., if you have an IDE) or system outs to get a clue. First thing to check would be, if the maze size is read correctly. Further, the following loops look odd:for(int i = 0; i < maze.length; i++) {
        for(int x = 0; x < maze.length; x++) {
            if (input.hasNextLine()) {
                String insert = input.nextLine();
                maze[x] = insert.charAt(x);
    }Shouldn't the nextLine test and assignment be in the outer loop? And assignment be to each maze's inner array? Like so:for(int i = 0; i < maze.length; i++) {
        if (input.hasNextLine()) {
            String insert = input.nextLine();
            for(int x = 0; x < insert.size(); x++) {
                maze[i][x] = insert.charAt(x);
    }Otherwise, only one character per line is read and storing a character actually should fail.

  • Removing non printable characters from an excel file using powershell

    Hello,
    anyone know how to remove non printable characters from an excel file using powershell?
    thanks,
    jose.

    To add - Excel is a binary file.  It cannot be managed via external methods easily.  You can write a macro that can do this.  Post in the Excel forum and explain what you are seeing and get the MVPs there to show you how to use the macro facility
    to edit cells.  Outside of cell text "unprintable" characters are a normal part of Excel.

  • Populate a table reading the data from a TXT file

    how can I populate a table reading the data from a TXT file?
    thanks

    Hey Kevin!
    Using FORMS.TEXT_IO to bulk load data from a file strikes me as re-inventing the wheel. It is just about justifiable in a self-service environment, but I regard the EXTERNAL TABLE is a better solution for that situation as well.
    The same applies to UTL_FILE. I think the ability to read text with UTL_FILE is primarily intended for read file-based configuration or file manipulation/processing rather than data loading.
    Re-writing a text file into SQL statements is too much like hard work (even with an editor that supports macro definition and regular expressions) for no real benefit. You lose all the bulk load peformance you would get from SQL*Loader. But for QAD I'd probably let you off with it.
    You missed out one obvious alternative: using Java to turn the contents of an XML file into a CLOB and inserting it into a table which is read by a PL/SQL procedure that parses the XML records and insert the retrieved data into a table.
    Stay lucky, APC

  • What is the 'quickest' way to read char data from a txt file

    Hello,
    What is the 'quickest' way to read character data from a txt file stored on the phone to be displayed into the screen?
    Regards

    To be even a bit more constructive...
    Since J2me does not have a BufferedInputStream, it will help to implement it yourself. It's much faster since you read large blocks at ones in stread of seperate chars.
    something line this lets you read lines very fast:
      while ( bytesread < filesize ) {
             length = configfile.read( buff, 0, buff.length );
             // append buffer to temp String
             if ( length < buff.length ) {
                byte[]  buf  = new byte[length];
                System.arraycopy( buff, 0, buf, 0, length );
                tmp.append( new String( buf ) );
             } else {
                tmp.append( new String( buff ) );
             // look in tmp string for \r\n
             idx1 = tmp.toString().indexOf( "\r\n" );
             while ( idx1 >= 0 ) {
                //if found, split into line and rest of tmp
                line = tmp.toString().substring( 0, idx1 );
             /// ... do with it whatever you want ... ////

                idx1 = tmp.toString().indexOf( "\r\n" );
             bytesread += length;

  • Loading text from a .txt file

    I want to do something that should be VERY simple, but due to
    Adobe's insistence on using #$%^ing tutorials instead of just
    providing step by step instructions, it's very frustrating to
    figure out how to do it.
    All I want to do is load the contents of a text file into a
    dynamic text field, but I can't figure out how to do it (I'm not
    all that familiar with AS). I'm working with Flash 8. Please help.
    Thanks.

    Create the dynamic text box, and name it schedule.
    Then, in the frame on the timeline that the text box resides
    in, the corresponding actionscript would be used to create a text
    variable and assign the text from a txt file to it:
    loadText = new LoadVars();
    loadText.load("externalfile.txt");
    loadText.onLoad = function() {
    schedule.text = this.textbody;
    Where does the "textbody" variable come from? In the external
    text file (externalfile.txt in this example), you have a variable
    called textbody, and the externalfile.txt should read along the
    lines of:
    textbody = "I'm the external text that needs to be read
    in"

    Regards,

    Hmmm... looks like the file format isn't even very consistent... why the semicolon after Data1 but not after Data2 or Data3??
    Your algorithm is reading character-by-character, and most of the time it's easier to let a StringTokenizer or StreamTokenizer do the work of lexical analysis and let you focus on the parsing.
    I am also going to assume your format is very rigid. E.g. section Data1 will ALWAYS come before section Data2, which will come before section Data3, etc... and you might even make the assumption there can never be a Data4, 5, 6, etc... (this is why its nice to have some exact specification, like a grammar, so you know exactly what is and is not allowed.) I will also assume that the section names will always be the same, namely "DataX" where X is a decimal digit.
    I tend to like to use StreamTokenizer for this sort of thing, but the additional power and flexibility it gives comes at the price of a steeper learning curve (and it's a little buggy too). So I will ignore this class and focus on StringTokenizer.
    I would suggest something like this general framework:
    //make a BufferedReader up here...
    do
      String line = myBufferedReader.readLine();
      if (line!=null && line.trim().length()>0)
        line = line.trim();
        //do some processing on the line
    while (line!=null);So what processing to do inside the if statement?
    Well, you can recognize the DataX lines easily enough - just do something like a line.startsWith("Data") and check that the last char is a digit... you can even ignore the digit if you know the sections come in a certain order (simplifying assumptions can simplify the code).
    Once you figure out which section you're in, you can parse the succeeding lines appropriately. You might instantiate a StringTokenizer, i.e. StringTokenizer strtok = new StringTokenizer(line, ";, "); and then read out the tokens into some Collection, based on the section #. E.g.
    strtok = new StringTokenizer(line, ";, ");
    if (sectionNo==0)
      //read the tokens into the Labels1 collection
    else if (sectionNo==1)
      //read the tokens into the Labels2 collection
    else //sectionNo must be 2
      //create a new line in your table model and populate it with the token values...
    }I don't think the delimiters are necessary if you are using end-of-line's as delimiters (which is implicit in the fact that you are reading the text out line-by-line). So the original file format you listed looks fine (except you might want to get rid of that rogue semicolon).
    Good luck.

  • Reading integers from a .txt file and computing means

    I have a program that uses for loops to produce ten integers (1-10) are returns the average mean, geometric mean, and harmonic mean.
    Now i need to change this program to read integers from a .txt file and return the same data. Basically i need to change my for statements that are incrementing to read the text file.
    Thanks guys.

    You haven't asked a question. You haven't posted code. What are you expecting here?
    But I guess I'll take a stab at it and say you should look at the Scanner class
    http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/api/java/util/Scanner.html
    or BufferedReader
    http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/api/java/io/BufferedReader.html
    I'll never understand what makes people come to the forums, create an account, and ask a lazy question, when they could get a great answer much quicker through Google.

  • Read numbers from a .txt file and display them in a graph

    How can I get Labview 7 to read from a txt. file containing a lot of
    coloumns with different datas? There`s only two of the coloumns that are
    interesting to me, the first, that contains the time of the measuring, and
    one in the middle, that contains the measured temperatures. I want Labview
    to read this datas and display them graphicly.
    Thanks from Stale

    Here's one way.
    You can also use the help-> find examples and search for "text".

  • How to fill a table with data from columns & rows from a txt file

    I am trying to fill say:
    Myname     Myclass     Mycollege
    Mohan     MD     Stanford
    from a txt file into 3 columns of a table. I can easily do it into a textarea component by
    clicking a button:
    try{
    FileReader fr = new FileReader("F:/CreatorProjects1/stan.txt");
    BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(fr);
    String s1="";
    String s="";
    stantxtarea.setValue(s);
    while((s=br.readLine())!=null) {
    s1 = s1+s;
    s1=s1+"\n";
    stantxtarea.setValue(s1);
    br.close();
    fr.close();
    } catch(Exception e) {
    e.printStackTrace();
    return null;
    All table components seem to need a database. I do not use any database. I run exe files that give output to txt files. How to solve it?
    I appreciate any help in this regard...

    there may be another way. This is some thing some thing I can recommend. You can create property type of ObjectListDataProvider in session or application based on the scope you required. Create web bean class with property you want to show in the column (say col1, col2, col2). Initialize the list property like similar below
    List dataList = new ArrayList();
    ObjectListDataProvider mytableprops = new ObjectListDataProvider();
    try {
    //start loop read data from your txt file
    //create instance of web bean for each line
    //add web bean instance into dataList
    //end of loop readind data from txt file
    oldpins.setList(dataList );
    oldpins.setObjectType(NotificationProfileBean.class);
    } catch (Exception ee1){;}
    return oldpins;
