installing snow leopard on black macbook pro and installation stopped. machine will not shut down or restart. screen displays normal background with no headers or icons of any kind.

If you are using Snow Leopard or Lion and have HP software for pre-Snow Leopard (either from a CD not marked as compatible with 10.6 or you recently upgraded to Snow Leopard and had the HP software on your Mac before you upgraded - even if you did a standard uninstall of the old software or installed new software over the top of it) you must uninstall the software using the 'scrubber' option:
Go to Applications/Hewlett Packard/ click on HP Uninstaller
Click on Continue
Highlight your device on the left pane
Hold the Ctrl, Opt and Cmd keys and click on Uninstall <<<< Scrubber Option
There will be a pop up that asks if you are sure you want to uninstall ALL hp software. (At this point, if you continue, any HP printers you have installed will need to be reinstalled)
Click Continue and let it finish
Restart your Mac
Now reset the printing system:
- Sys Prefs, Print & Fax
- Right (control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
- Select the plus sign to re-add it. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.

Snow Leopard-MacBook Pro

Just tried to install SL onto my MacBook Pro. Can't be done apparently, does anybody know why? It is one of the previous generations before the current one, running OSX 10.5.8

If your Snow Leopard disc does not look like * it will not install on anything other than the machine it came with.
If your RAM is under 1 GB, it won't install.
If your hard disk space is less than 9GB it won't install. You should realistically have 9GB + 15% of your hard disk empty.
If there is something corrupt within the data installed, or some memory resident program that doesn't know about Snow Leopard, there might be a problem.

Firefox 18 on OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard Macbook Pro May Cause NVIDIA Problems

I upgraded my Macbook Pro to Firefox 18 on OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard on Friday afternoon. My computer froze while I was using Firefox on Saturday. It froze while I was switching windows within Firefox on Sunday. It froze when I was scrolling a Firefox window this morning. I've checked the kernel log, and each time the computer froze I got "NVDA(OpenGL): Channel exception! exception type = 0xd = GR: SW Notify Error" and some related NVIDIA messages.
The rest of my computer still works. I was able to ssh into it and have it play sounds. It's just the screen that was having trouble. That's what you would expect if your video card is freaking out.
I don't know for sure that Firefox is causing this, but it's rather suspicious. It's the only thing I've changed on my system in the last few days.
If you want to check your kernel log, open the Applications folder, open the Utilities folder, and then open Console. Click on All Messages under DATABASE SEARCHES and search for NVDA.

Unfortunately, the program they recommend doesn't work on Snow Leopard, the version of Flash that seems to be an issue is a really old one, I've already installed the patch from Apple, and I've had my motherboard and graphics card replaced once already. Thanks for digging, though!

Opening Final Cut Studio 3 Projects on Mac Pro (Snow Leopard) & MacBook Pro (Lion)

Hi Everyone,
Right i've been trawling the forums in regards to Lion's compatibility with Final Cut Studio 3. There seemed to be a mixed bag of reports, some running FCP fine on Lion, others having issues.
For this reason alone I decided to keep my main editing system, my Mac Pro, running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and not upgrade to Lion.
More and more frequently i've thought I need to get myself a MacBook Pro, for data wrangling on location and for some cheeky edit sessions when i'm away on jobs.
The thing is, all new MacBook Pros ship with Lion as their OS.
My question is twofold really. Firstly, I've read that Final Cut Studio 3 installs and runs fine on Lion systems, can anyone confirm this?
Secondly, do any of you know if i'll be able to swap between, and freely work on projects across the two different systems, namely a Mac Pro running Snow Leopard and a MacBook Pro running Lion? is this an issue at all?
The last thing I want to do is spend three grand on a MacBook and then realise I have issues opening or working on projects from my MacPro (or vise-vesa)
As ever, your help would be greatly appreciated...

Yes, FCS 3 installs and runs without issue on my Lion system.
There are a couple of careats however with the primary one being DO A CLEAN INSTALL OF THE OS AND THE APPS. Upgrade installs over major version changes are problematic.

Attempted upgrade to Snow Leopard, but failed.

I want to upgrade from Leopard 10.5.8.I bought the Snow Leopard CD from Apple a few months ago. Installer ran for maybe 8 minutes, then said it "cannot change the" contents/data* "of the hard drive". *I don't remember the exact word. I had to use boot from CD and the keyboard eject to get the CD out. Now my MacBook Pro won't boot. It gets stuck on the grey screen, then after several minutes it shuts down. I bought the laptop used 2 years ago, and don't have a Leopard disc. What can I do?

I have very little experience of this particular problem but others here may be able to comment upon the following advice:
Shut down - hold power button for several seconds if necessary
Disconnect all devices eg external drives, printers etc - keep only display, keyboard & mouse
Disconnect any Ethernet cables.
Boot in Safe mode - hold Shift key immediately it starts until you get a grey Apple logo

File Sharing between Snow Leopard MacBook Pro and Mac OS 8.6 Powerbook 1400

well ok, for some this might sound ridicule. Why should I still be using a 13 year old PowerBook. Let me tell you, this is writing/typing heaven, Zen-like; no distractions at all, no twitter, no internet (although possible), no emails just pure you and your text and if you spin down the HDD, absolute silence. as said before pure Zen writing heaven. and on top of that you're typing on the best keyboard ever on a laptop.
As you might see I love my vintage masterpiece of a laptop and use it on a regular basis. Just one Problem.
Since I Installed Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro 17" I just haven't been able to establish a connection between the two machines.
I have to admit, I'm not that versed with OS 8.6 but with 10.5 I had absolutely no problems accessing the shared folders on my MacBook Pro and vice versa.
My first thought was to activate Appletalk on the ethernet on my Macbook, which I failed to find anywhere. The Apple Discussions Forums revealed that Appletalk has been dropped with the introduction of Snow Leopard but all the entries where regarding printing issues with shared printers, I didn't find anything about actual file sharing and thus did not get any clues how to share files between my two machines.
My PowerBook 1400cs/166 runs on 8.6 and I use a Global Village Platinum PCMCIA card (modem and Ethernet combi card). this setup worked perfectly with 10.5 but I have not been able to make establish a connection since running 10.6 on my MBP.
I am really desperate since I heavily depend on being able to exchange files between those two machines through an ethernet connection.
So I kindly ask anyone who might be able to help me to please consider posting any solutions or at least ideas which could help me with my problem. I really would greatly appreciate any effort whatsoever.

What I forgot to mention: strangely enough, when I enable Internet Sharing on my MacBook Pro (through Airport) to Ethernet, my PowerBook 1400 can connect to the internet without any problems.

First of all let me thank you very much. It actually works (partially).
There seems to be a problem though. While I can connect perfectly from my MBP 10.6 to my PowerBook 1400, the other way round doesn't work.
My MBP does not show up in the Network browser of OS 8.6 but I could life with that.
The problem is that if I try to connect to my MBP from my PB1400 by entering the IP directly a alert message appears reading that the "User Authentication Method required by this server can't be found, please check the AppleShare folder in the Extensions folder and try again".
Do you have any clues what I'm doing wrong or where the problem may lie?

Even if you may not be able to further help me with this problem, I ow you a great deal of gratitude and am very thankful for your help so far. At least I can exchange files between the two machines and that's what I needed in the first place.

Cannot install iTunes 10.7 on snow leopard MacBook Pro.

I have received my new iPhone 5 two weeks ago but I am unable to use it since I cannot install iTunes 10.7. I have a MacBook Pro with Mac OS 10.6 (snow leopard) and 2GB RAM. I have been trying to install it and every time I get an error message saying that the disk could not be verified. I tried skipping verification and again it would allow me installing. Furthermore, I am trying to do my recommended software updates (including one about security) and my mac never succeeds. I am just wondering if that could be the problem.
Any advice would be much appreciated!

Migrate from snow leopard (macbook pro) back to Leopard (powerbook) ???

My powerbook g4 (tiger) started with the kernel warnings--got a macbook pro. Luckily I was able to pull the hard drive out of the powerbook and use an external firewire enclosure to transfer everything on to the macbook pro. Put a new hard drive into the powerbook and loaded leopard, but the old hard drive in the external enclosure now doesn't want to work. Can I transfer all those powerbook files (now on the macbook pro) back to the powerbook with the new drive via firewire or migration? Or does going backward from snow leopard to the powerbook with leopard create issues???

PowerPC architecture and Intel architecture are different and are not backwards compatible.If you transfer files by Target Disk Mode that will work but you cannot take a clone of 10.6 as a bootable volume and transfer it back two OSX versions and one incompatible architecture.

Tiger to Snow Leopard MacBook Pro won't install

I got the box set of Snow Leopard to update my MacBook Pro from Tiger. I put in the installation disk, and my computer spits it right back out. HELP!

Before reparing disk, make sure your data is backed up*:

Repair Disk can only be done when you boot from the installer CD, and use the Installer's Utility Menu Disk Utility. You can optionally boot with command-S keyboard shortcut and type at the prompt:
/sbin/fsck -fy
and repeat until it repairs. If it can't repair you may need to purchase Alsoft Disk Warrior. If it repairs, follow by a:
/sbin/mount -uw
and then type:
exit
Let us know how far you get.

Upon rebooting my left and right external monitor on my Snow Leopard Macbook Pro switch sides, right to left.

I'm using two plugable UGA-2K-A ( http://plugable.com/products/UGA-2K-A/ ). They work great for USB graphics, but how can I stop the configuration changes?

Automatic - Best for Main Display
Standard - Best for CRT
Light
Medium - Best for Flat Panel

In Snow Leopard, you can only choose between Automatic and Standard CRT. Since few people use CRTs these days, most users now have only one option: Automatic. The problem with the Automatic option is that OS X incorrectly detects many third party LCD monitors as CRTs, and consequently, disables LCD font smoothing.
You can force OS X to use LCD font smoothing on all displays with this Terminal command:
defaults -currentHost write -globalDomain AppleFontSmoothing -int 2
The number 2 here corresponds to Medium - Best for Flat Panel. You may also use 1 for light smoothing, and 3 for strong smoothing, as per the original OS X font smoothing options.

SNOW LEOPARD - macbook pro with external monitor

My external monitor (Formac DVI) is giving me problems since snow leopard - if I start up and close the lid the external monitor goes black with thin grey lines. I have to keep the lid of the laptop open until start up is complete and the desktop appears on both monitors, then close the lid, let the comp go to sleep then wake with my bluetooth keyboard that's very annoying.
What are the chances this issue will be fixed soon?? I may go back to Leopard for a bit.....

Migrating iTunes from removed G4 HD to new Snow Leopard MacBook Pro...

I have set up a MBP with Snow Leopard 10.6.2 installed. I have a removed G4 HD from my Powerbook 1.67GHz former Mac. The SL does not yet have iTunes installed on the new software
Since ALL my former music is on the G4 HD, what is the best way for me to transfer it over so as not to lose that music. Do I set up the iTunes first on the SL site or just transfer it over from the G4(I guess Migration Assistant) ?
Also of note; before I installed the SL on the MBP(it was a used one and had a previous iTunes-also not set up on it), I backed up the entire HD which was Leopard 10.5.7, then erased it before the SL installation. I have that on a Time Machine backup on an external WD HD.
What is the preferred way to do this, in order of sequences ?
Really NEED to get this right the first time so I don't lose all that music...

Download iTunes and install - it is only the app - the real stuff is in the iTunes folder. Once you have moved the the iTunes Folder and open iTunes - if it is a newer version - it will take sometime to update the iTunes Lbrary - be patient.
Migration Assistant is a good option if using computer to computer. If not then an ext HD case with FW is best - IMHO.

Deleted only disk on my snow leopard macbook pro what do i do!?!?!?!?

I was trying to clear my Macintosh HD disk because it had too much clutter and trash on it. I was following directions gave to me from a youtuber called AddictedToMacintosh, and because of his directions my only disk was deleted and now all i can do is stare at a blank screen. I am pretty mad about this because it was not a cheap computer i tried using a snow leopard disk but it didnt work and i lost the original disk that came with it if any one has any ideas please contact me thanks so much i am willing to do alot for this computer once again thanks

It is early 2011 and I will explain what he told me to do I was supposed ti shut down and get ti this point not on the actual desktop and I was at disk utility he told me to do something(I dont remember it being a while ago) and it brought me to this point where it started talking about mountain lion and I wasnt sure what was going on so I restarted it and then if u hold like command r after it it brings you to something before you go to your main disk and so it automatically brought me there and all I saw was a disk that I had that didnt do anything it was that snow leopard disc that wasnt the original I needed and so im pretty much here now I tried something like internet bootup or something I know it wasnt named that but similar thanks
