Attention MSI Techs : B2B-CAS Delay

Since this has been enabled for the GD65 in bios 1.5 onwards it seems to have made a lot of peoples setups unstable.
Here are a few examples
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=135721.0
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=134364.0
I tried and tried to stabilize my system with BIOS 1.5 when it came out no luck, then I tried 1.6 same again no luck (crashing on windows load) 1.7 came and I got the same again. I decided to do a bit of digging and it seems that B2B Case Delay had come out of beta and was implemented into BIOS 1.5 onwards. Trouble with this setting is it is at 0 by default which is not compatible with my ram sticks, nor is any other setting. It was impossible to use the XMP profiles. B2B is what Performance Mode for memory was for Core 2 Duo.
I believe this mode should be taken out of the BIOS, it was only ASUS that actually allowed users to change this mode until MSI recently brought it into their BIOS and for me and others it's caused nothing but problems.
I am now back on BIOS 1.4 where XMP profile works fine and I can no longer change the B2B setting.

You should inform MSI about your findings.  99.99% of us are users here and MSI techs don't read or post here that often.
Additionally, 2, or even a few, posts do not make a trend.

• MSI motherboard & Discovery cases?

I've a Discovery case that has a screen on the front panel, this screen shows the temp of the CPU but i dont know if the motherboard supports this feature. I've a K8T800 neo series motherboard, BIOS version (as shows on the motherboard 1.0 but in the title after going in the Setup it shows 3.31a .. not sure of the version)
so would be possible to get this feature enabled if i upgrade the BIOS? and where is the pin reponsible for such feature. if found.
tnx

As this is a user to user forum I doubt we can answer that. You may have to make direct contact with an MSI tech if they can even give you an answer. You may need an Engineer to help and I doubt you will be able to contact one.

• Official word on what is "System Temp" from MSI tech support

I e-mailed MSI asking about what System Temp was actually reading on the motherboard. Here is the reply:
MSI Tech. 02/10/2008 System temp is recording the actual system temp inside your case which the sensor is mounted near the inside of the mb which sensing the system temp.
Okay...so I guess the sensor is mounted near your electrical outlet...

LOL - That is too funny.
but the system temperature sensor is just a diode mounted on the motherboard to measure air temperatures inside the case.  not sure exactly where, but most I've noticed are around the CPU area.

• K7t266pro-2-ru Terrible Mobo! MSI Tech support non existent

I have a K7t266pro-2-ru ver 2.0 and it will not boot from floppy to dos. Therefore I cannot update the bios nor load an operating system. Tried Update 2 but they have you make a floppy.( which this board won't boot from. )Wrote to MSI Tech support several times(You think they would know the problem) never getting any answer. Think I will get an Asus or Biostar Motherboard and throw this one away. Tried everything including loading hard drive on another computer. Works then(Sort of) No way to disable bios protection.(Not even in the list) Anyone interested in a motherboard CHEAP

Its the Motherboard, and i too am having problems with my MSI at the moment for different reasons, which is also leading me to a decision for another motherboard (Gigabyte/Epox are mobo's i have never had ANY problems with, and if there were any, there is excellent support for both of these)
I don't think it is a faulty motherboard, since other ppl are claiming to have the same problems with this model motherboard. Msi need to program Bios a little better than they're doing, since i think it may be a bios problem. X(
I'm not 100% sure it's a bios problem since there have to be others using this board without problems. I have tried different versions with no success. I would suspect a design flaw. Note this board has been discontinued. When I use Si Soft Sandra it did not even have the 1.44 floppy in the list of supported floppy drives. On mine the floppy drive works after the O/S gets up and running but will not boot to the floppy. I got disgusted with tech support and bought a Gigabyte GA-7vrxp. Works great, but now I have a very expensive K7T266 Pro-2 RU paperweight. Not even sure if I want to send it back to get fixed. Seems like throwing good money after bad considering the lack of support. Hate to bash MSI but I'm calling it the way I see it, after many attempts to get any kind of response what so ever. I will try a different brand of floppy as Bas suggested but I don't have much hope.

• MSI tech support

I paid good money for my system and one of the components is the Neo2 - LS 865PE.  I use WindowsMe with all the updates and all the MSI supplied drivers with all onboard stuff and a flawless Radeon 128 meg.  I cannot put my system in S3 mode because half of the times it does not come out of it.  MSI tech support insulted me by telling me to activate S3 in bios and install OS after.  That is their answer. My answer to MSI is you make GARBAGE.

you know what? someone suggested that he upgrade his OS and he went crazy over that! most of the posts were revolving around this and I was laughin about it, thats all! I could care less if he kept using Windows ME for the rest of his life. The point IS that he came in here to RANT AND RAVE! NOT ask for help and its OBVIOUS.  When someone doesn't want anyone's help and they make it obvious in a place where we are SUPPOSED to help others, then they shouldn't be here. THE END! Don't tell me to be quiet, THAT is just asking for a NEGATIVE response.
As for the problem, the first thing I would've suggested is that the OS doesnt handle S3 well... 2nd thing would've been the PSU, maybe its too weak.  Notice that no matter what advice he was given, he basically said "its MSI, nothing else" or something along those lines...
sorry about my posts in this thread, it was light hearted (and probably still my mistake to post something light hearted, again I apologize), but now it got too serious. This thread should be deleted as it doesn't benefit anyone here.

Sorry you've decided this is a rant but the objective observer would know that  all I want is a solution to at least the 3 issues mentioned. I spent the better part of 2 nights with techs that had me doing all the standard refresh items, i.e. setting the PRAM... and as time goes on my frustration grows. Last week spent days trying to find the driver software Maverick now needs and Apple is supposed to have it and doesn't. So at what point does this become a rant? I've done things the right way had mucho patience thus far and as a kicker, Apple won't let me download Mountain Lion to reinstall and rid my self of Maverick. Tell me, would you complain?

• Help tech worst case senario

i was happily using my imac 17 in' for a few years now delaying getting leopard until the price dropped ( it didn't and i finally crashed a bought it) i messed around with the new applications for about 2 days then disaster struck in the form of BOOT CAMP
i split the disk drive into 2 pieces 32GB for windows and about 120 for my mac hes where i hit the land slide running
#1 there was an error with splitting the drive and i had to reinstall leopard unknowing that i had accepted deleting my ENTIRE disk drive and about 2000 songs with it
#2 now i need to admit to everyone I'm a techie of low standards and i "Barrowed"
my offices copy of ./shutter Windows 2003 server edition and loaded it with a fancy bit of working the lop holes
#3 and this is the part you will all kick me for when it started the loading the program it asked me for a 25 digit code on the instruction book which was thrown away many a year ago
#4 this is why a 25 digit code will not help me now. i ejected the disk and restarted it praying that apple will open .... no dice so i put in leopard hopping that it will load the apple OS i have and error message and can no longer eject the disk
so now i am forever doomed to an error message and karma is having a fare bit of revenge i need help and i think ill take it in to a apple store tomorrow. unless one of you guys has a wonder cure

Hmmm... When you try to reboot into the Leopard DVD, did you hold "c" or "option" ? Also, when you say that it doesn't boot, does it give a folder with a question mark, or does it not display anything (white loading screen forever)? Something that you can try is holding command+"s" at startup, which will boot you into a Command Line Interace, single user mode. At that point you can type "fsck -fy" to perform a disk repair on your hard drive. This shouldn't erase any of your data, but it will check all the necessary system files to make sure everything is correct, then repair it if it isn't. After you type that and it goes through that process, you can type "quit" to continue booting. Good luck!

• MSI Tech Support is Outstanding

I was having issues with my 890FXA-GD65 not booting at all with the 1866 memory setting.
I knew there was a small chance that I could get it to work with a BIOS update, so I emailed tech support.
A couple weeks later they emailed me back with a new BIOS to try. It still didn't work.
They sent me another to try, and again, and again, for about 3-4 months.
Finally they sent me BIOS revision 8 (beta), and voilla, it works.
They could have blown me off because my Bulldozer CPU isn't officially supported by AMD on this white socket 890FX motherboard.
They could have made other excuses like blaming it on the RAM not being on the QVL, or that 1866 is an overclock, ect.
Instead, they worked on resolving the issue and did not quit until the job was done.

Thanks for your report, damric!
And yes, your experience shows, that it makes sense to stay in there and keep talking to MSI Technical Support, trusting, that (even though tons of users are contacting them with all kinds of issues), they will usually take the time to eventually test and reproduce a given issue.  Patience is called for, of course, but usually this patience is not a bad investment.

• Attn: MSI Tech Gurus...minor problem...help

I have an MSI K7N2G-L, which has the latest BIOS flashed.
Everything is working good, except...
Sometimes when I boot my computer, the little light on my monitor will go from green (on), to yellow (off). The system still runs, but there is no display. I checked all the BIOS in CMOS, checked the connections, everything under the sun.
I also, after flashing the latest BIOS, shorted the CMOS jumper to reset it, removed and replaced the battery, and unplugged the PSU connection, then reconnected.
Still, I get this random problem. Monitor is on (Green light)then when I power up my PC, it goes off, system still runs, but no display. It doesn't happen on every boot, just about 40-50% of the time, and seems to occur less, on a really cold boot. Like the first time I turn my computer on each day.
I also have Virus boot detection disabled, and the IDE/Boot device settings in CMOS correct, meaning I have two HDD's, but only one is formatted. It shouldn't matter anyway, as I have the Win XP HDD as the ONLY,....boot device enabled.
I am lost. What could be causing this?
PC specs below:
AMD Athlon XP 2800+ (Barton)
MSI K7N2G-L 8X AGP (Mobo)
Ultra Premium O'clocked 2700 DDR (Dual-Channel)
Maxtor/Seagate 40/60 GB HDD's
ATI/Sapphire Radeon 9700 Pro
(OM3GA Drivers)
Creative Audigy Gamer
Klipsch 5.1 (400-watt sub)
Intel Ethernet Pro 10/100
Grado Prestige Series Phones
Full-Tower Aluminum Case
K/Coolmax 80mm Case fans (x6)
Microsoft Dual-Optical M...KB
Chieftec 400-watt ATX PSU
All-rounded/sheilded IDE Cables
Yada...yada..ya.....

Helio,
What are the amps for your power supply?  The 9700 pro is pretty power hungry, and it may be being starved.
Also, try setting AGP to 4X.
Good Luck

• MODS: delete or lock. Board reing RMA'd per MSI tech support. Thank you.

History:( Built two identical systems )
1:  RMA'd board for a bad BIOS flash. Was sent back with old BIOS. Discovered M-Flash in BIOS. Once you understand it, it works better than any other way I have tried, to update BIOS.
2: Booted long enough to load windows, then dead! Tried Processor from other system, booted fine.
3: RMA'd Processor. AMD found it to be dead sent me a new boxed one.
4: Put system together, would not boot.
5: Swapped Processers around, new one worked fine in other system.Bought an Athlon 64 3500+ locally used for $15 to test setup, it works fine. So board will not boot with 940 but works fine with3500.
6: RMA'd board with this info.
7: Got board back, put in case, wait for it, NOTHING! Will not boot!
8: Unplug floppy, DVD, 1 hard drive and 2 memory sticks, NO boot.
9: Strip from case, put on anti-static mat, NO boot.
10: Reinstalled Athlon 64 3500+, been running overnight no problems running Avira antivirus scan.
Anyone have any ideas before I try to get MSI to understand this.

What a mess you've been through! I'd go through the roof.
If my understanding is correct older processor works, newer not. So that is what we should concentrate our efforts on, right? The new processor.
Damaged, unsupported, underpowered, incorrect seating.
Damaged is a bit early to tell, it might be the last thing we discover.
Incorrect seating doesn't sound likely, since the other works.
Underpowered, well PSU seems to be alright and I believe you can't have a short for one processor but not the other; hope you checked the power cables are in completely.
Unsupported, the 940 needs the latest BIOS update http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1552  After the update, pull power cable out, wait a little and then clear CMOS.
Mod: You know of course you can n o t  reuse the thermal paste on processor and heatsink. It has to be carefully removed, and then reapplied some new stuff. Bas likes cheese, but I wouldn't recommend that for a beginner - there might be holes in the cheese.

• MSI Lightning GTX 580 delayed crashing

I have a weird problem here. I have a MSI GTX 580 Lightning 1.5GB that will crash after a few days of the PC being up and running. Let me try to explain the situation.
Cold boot. games play fine. no problems.
I always leave my PC on. Idle's all night and while I'm at work.
Come home, do general work.
Idle's for another day or two.
Sit down a few days later to find any game crashes after a few minutes.
Power down. Cold boot. games play fine for hours.
I have:
Asus P8P68 Pro
Intel Core i7 2600K
8GB (2x2GB) G.SKILL DDR3-1866 Ram
OCZ Vertex 2 120GB SSD
Corsair HX850 Power Supply
This happens no matter if CPU and GPU are running at stock speeds. Tried several Nvidia drivers. It's been going on a while. I just upgraded from 275.xx to 285.62. I also never had any issues with CFX 6950's in this system.
Any ideas? Thanks!

I honestly haven't tried reference 580 clocks. Only the stock clocks of the Lightning. But I don't see how that would affect anything. I can play for several hours without a crash. Then come back a few days later and it will crash within minutes. Cold boot, I can play for hours again.
I can still give it a try though.
then it colubd be anything
try reseat the VGA into the PCI-e slot or try it in another PCI-E slot
