ATV 3 "buffering" issues - Windows 7

Hi
I just got the latest ATV and I'm not really impressed. At first I could not connect to my networked via ethernet - it was just stuck on the setup screen for nearly 20 minutes.
I then hooked it up to my wifi and it connected with no issues. I could connect to my iTunes library (on Windows 7) and started streaming some TV shows without any problems. Tried to watch the next episode and it just stuck with the Apple spinning wheel...
I've switched everything off (router, pc and ATV) and it will work for one TV show or movie and then the same crap starts all over.
All my media is in mp4 format and it plays perfect in iTunes.
Any advice?

@agruber - thanks for the advice, it's a shame it did not solve my issues.
I am really disappointed with Apple TV, I foolishly believed because it's Apple it would be brilliant and just work out of the box like all my other Apple products.
I know Apple probably won't care neither would any of you guys but my Apple TV is boxed up and ready to be send back.

  • The Mysterious aTV Buffering Issue: Can it be solved?

    Hey guys, I’m really stumped here so I’m hoping someone has a clue as to what’s going on. Here’s the deal. I’ve been ripping my DVD’s using MTR and Visual Hub. Everything looks amazing my my Apple TV. Couldn’t be happier.
    ...until I ripped season 1 of Entrourage (from HBO). I ripped the exact same way I’ve been ripping all my stuff. Once it’s ripped I convert with Visual Hub to H.264 “for Apple TV” just like I have been all along. I import into itunes. The files look very high quality, play back perfect. Everything is great right?
    So I go out to the living room and fire up the Apple TV and here’s where it gets weird. Let me first say that I stream EVERYTHING to the Apple TV. Screw this syncing crap. The Apple TV is wired via ethernet into my AEBSn and it’s been streaming like a champ from my 24” iMac. Most of the time when I click on a video file to play on the Apple TV I barely see the buffering bar at the bottom. It’s very quick. So I saw no reason to ever sync.
    So back to these Entrourage TV eps. When I try to stream them, just as I have every other piece of media on my computer, it stalls out. The buffering bar goes very slowly, aTV plays two seconds of the video and then it needs to buffer again. It can’t play more than 5 seconds of the video.
    My first theory was that the file was too big for streaming. Each ep is clocking in at about a 1GB. But then I realized that I’m streaming 4GB DVD rips of movies and they never have a buffering problem and they were created in the exact same manner. I thought it was a network issue but everything else streams perfectly. So how could this be? The files were created exactly the same way as everything else but for some reason it’s a no go. Then I thought that the files were incompatible with the aTV. But if I “sycn” to the aTV’s hard drives the files play back perfectly. What am I missing here? This makes no sense.
    If anyone is having this issue please let me know. Again, I’m wired into the network and encoding with the standard aTV settings in Visual Hub. This is killing me. I don’t want to have to sync one show to the hard drive. I want to be able to stream everything.
    Thanks!
    24" iMac C2D, MacBook, aTV   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    I have to say that's a little disappointing because I can def see a quality differene between single and double pass encoding. Does anyone know a fix so we don't have to suffer in quality?As indicated above, the "single-pass" workflow should be the "last resort" here. Things would be so much easier if someone made an analytical utility that would graph the instantaneous fluctuation in video data rate over time. Then it would be easy to locate problem "spike segments" for user testing with varying settings in order to determine an optimum "multi-pass" changes to fix this problem. (I still have an open inquiry in the QT Mac forum asking about any such utilities.) The main problem here is the fact that every movie should be considered unique and never to depend on "fixed" settings in all cases. The best we can hope for is a group of settings that work "most" of the time for most movies. Remember, the guys who do this professionally and are really good at it are as much artists as technicians.

  • Apple TV (2nd gen) - Very Specific Buffering Issue

    I have been watching the threads regularly for a situation similar to mine but I can't see one so I am starting a new one.
    I have Four (4) Apple TVs in the house and a large library of movies, TV shows and personal movies loaded into iTunes on a Window 7 64 bit system with an Intel i7 processor, 12 GB of memory and 2TB of disk space.  Everything seemed to work OK until I got the third Apple TV but that was a year ago and several software upgrades in the past.
    My problem is that when all four (4) Apple TVs are plugged into power, even if the ones I am not using are asleep, I have horrible buffering delays when watching vidoes from iTunes on the Windows PC. I do not have any trouble streaming video from Netflix or the iTunes store directly. When the Apple TV stops to fill buffers it seems to lock up trying and never comes back (I have waited up to 30 minutes). However, if I exit out of the movie as soon as the buffering issue starts, and go back into the video where I left off - it starts playing again within 3 seconds and will carry on for another random period of time in the range of 2 minutes to 10 minutes.
    Before anyone starts responding with the basic stock suggestions, I am a retired IT guy who has put a lot of time and technical effort into trying to find the root cause of this problem. I am very familiar with networking, Windows 7, firewalls, etc.
    The work around is that when I want to watch videos from iTunes on my Windows PC I have to unplug the other three Apple TVs, restart my router and reboot my Windows PC. These three steps together work consistently but omitting any one step may or may not improve the situation. This means that I can't just decide to watch a video from iTunes without 10 minutes of advance prep work - and watching two different videos on two different Apple TVs at the same time only works about 30% of the time.
    Here is some more background information:
    I have two (2) iPhones, one (1) iPad, another Windows 7 64 bit PC, a MacBook Air, and stand alone Internet radio on my network. The problem persists even when all the other devices have been powered off.
    All devices, including the Apple TVs, are running the most current version of software and have ALL patches installed.
    I have upgraded my router (twice) and now have an ASUS RT-N56U dual band router with the Windows PCs both cable connected and the Apple TVs and all the other stuff running wireless.
    I have used netstumbler to detect other networks and have tried various different channels on the router. I am in a low density area and only see two other neighbours with wireless networks.
    I have a 20 MB Internet service connection via cable modem and have no problems watching videos on the Apple TVs from the Internet
    I have relocated the router away from any other elecrical equipment (Apple TVs all show a full strength signal)
    I have tried disabling my MacAfee Security Center virus and personal firewall software (the problem persists), then removing it entirely (the problem persists), then reinstalling only the virus protection component and enabling Windows Firewall (the problem persists).
    I have removed all software from the Windows computer that brand name commercial software - I use Microsoft Office 2010 and Google Chrome as my browser (the problem persists).
    Important - I have moved the complete iTunes library to a 2TB USB hard drive and run iTunes on my MacBook Air with the Windows PCs turned off (the problem persists).
    There is one issue that seems relevant, but might just be a bug in the router management interface. I have set up reserved DHCP addresses for the Apple TVs and the computers to make it easier to identify devices when I am troubleshooting. The DHCP log shows the correct IP addresses being assigned to the correct MAC addresses but the network map screen frequently displays two or more Apple TVs with duplicate MAC addresses. It only happens with the Apple TVs and has never happened with anything else. This is what gave me the idea to turn off all Apple TVs except the one I want to watch and reset the router to clear the other addresses - which seems to be the only consistent way to watch an iTunes video without buffering problems.
    Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I have invested a lot of time and money in Apple technologies and setting up this home video strategy.  It's very frustrating that it doesn't work reliably.
    Thanks
    Bob T

    I too am having this issue were two of my Apple TVs are showing duplicate MAC Addresses. I have varrified this by looking at the arp -a cache on multiple machines. I believe this is a major bug in the Apple TV software. Can we please get a fix.

  • Apple TV 3 Buffering Issues using Ethernet

    I have an ATV3 that is connected via Ethernet with Comcast Xfinity.  I have 30+ dl speeds but am constantly having problems with buffering  It seems to be only movies bought through Apple.  HBO, Showtime, ESPN, Netflx, etc. all seem to work with minimum buffering issues.  I reset it, restored it, brought it in to Apple and received a new one and nothing seems to help.  It is set on automatic for IP address, for DNS, and for video playback.  Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank, Tony

    Those other services use adaptive streaming, iTunes content is fixed rate and needs to load a portion before playback begins. Comcast have been known to throttle iTunes/ATV traffic. Try testing on another network (preferably a controlled one like Apple's)

  • Slow/choppy playback - cache buffering issue

    On playback, PP6 randomly slows down and plays back choppy on visually complex shots.  It takes repeated stops and starts to clear it out.  I have troubleshot the life out of this, read every relevant thread, and tried everything imaginable to fix it.  Windows 7 pro is fully optimized.  There are no software conflicts (installed a drive with only windows and CS6)  I’ve got plenty of horsepower - 3930K in an asusp9x79pro, gtx 670 w/4mb, 32mb ram, OC to 4.5.  Eric Bowen at ADK has personally tuned the system and done a manual overclock. Memtest confirms the ram is fine. There are no hardware issues. Dropped frame indicator stays green, no dropped frames.  Switching from hardware to software mercury playback does nothing.  Rendering has no effect, nor do any playback settings. It happens with AVCHD and h.264 mp4’s as well, on short clips, not just long ones. It does not happen outside of ppro. Since I have eliminated hardware and software issues, all this leaves is Premiere.
    As Eric explains it, it is a cache buffering issue, related to how the nvidia card and ppro interact, and he sees it frequently enough.  I can't do his explanation justice, but he has offered to jump in and provide more detail if need be.
    Whatever it is, it’s ridiculous.   It is totally unacceptable to play down a sequence and have it intermittently slow down  on a system with this much power that has been properly set up by a pro.  It’s a shame, because it’s the only thing from keeping ppro/cs6 from being the best platform I’ve edited on in my 12 years as an editor.
    I’ve filed a bug report, but gotten no response.  If others are seeing it, and can file a bug report, maybe it will be publicly acknowledged and resolved.

    Hi,
    I  think I have similair problem. First of all my current specs is:
    Asus Sabertooth z77 mainboard with intel i7 2700K processor
    32 gb (8*4) ram
    120 gb ssd sata3 drive for OS and CS6
    500 gb sata3 7200rpm hd for cache files
    1 tb sata3 7200rpm hd for source video and audio
    and finally Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 Ti with 2gb of memory
    Blackmagic shuttle io card etc
    This system were combined specially for my endless highend compositing needs and it works like a charm with all applications other than Premiere Pro.
    Yesterday I barley finished editing a short (approx 2 minutes) 1080p project that shot with Canon 5D MKII. Without using mercury playback engine application
    works fine but once I activate it all playback became really slow and laggy and sometime it freeze if I move playhead quickly.
    I only use one video and one audio track in timeline so we can say this editing scenario is a fundamental for production grade NLE application.
    My graphic processor has a lot of cuda power but Adobe doesn't support it natively so I have to edit  the famous text file.
    On CS5 and CS5.5 I done lots of 1080p project with my old gtx 480 card and I never encountered any similair problem.
    I hope my favorite and trusted software company Adobe will find the problem and will fix it soon...
    Thanks

  • Apple TV buffering issues with iPhone 4s and iPad 2

    Hi all,
    I just got me an Apple TV 2nd gen (yeah, I know, ordered 2 days before the presentation of the new one). So far so good, the device is up and running, connects just fine to my Airport Express router and all.
    However, if I try to stream a video from my iPad (2) or my iPhone (4S), the results are quite horriffic. The iPad videos would buffer for a very long time before they start and then quite fast after that the buffering problems restart. It's pretty impossible to play a video fluently of more than 20 seconds. If I'd try from my iPhone it's even worse with videos being 1080p, the thing just never plays, eventually the preloading process stops on the mirroring mode is cut.
    I have to point out, all my devices are in the same room (WiFi) so the signal is the best it can be.
    This is honestly quite surprising AND disappointing to be honest, given I bought the device mostly for that, so I can stream videos from my phone and pad.
    Tell me, am I doing something wrong, or the video streaming over those devices is just a marketing gimmick with nothing real behind it?
    Would it matter if I change my router from Airport express to Airport extreme?
    Thanks!

    I have the same issue with ATV3 and iPhone 4S. Everything works properly, no buffering issues when watching netflix, vimeo, youtube BUT when I try mirroring even a small 15sec iPhone movie it stutters and buffers and results to a choppy playback..same with larger mp4 files such as 1-1.5GB, buffers forever and never plays, I just re-encoded the same movie to 700MB and plays perfectly..
    Why Apple, why?..so close..I can accept the bigger movie files issue, but not being able to playback properly an iPhone movie is funny..I recorded a movie with lower bitrate through Filmic Pro (Economy mode, up to 16Mbps)
    and plays properly.
    Is there an upcoming software update going to solve the problem or is it hardware related and therefore not fixable.
    Please don't reply with a network related answer, by 2012 we know how to set up our networks and everything else runs flawlessly.
    I'll apreciate a fast answer, we love Apple, but if it can't play an iphone movie (or a high quality movie from iTunes) it's just not up to my standards.
    Thanks again.

    adobe reader issues windows 8 Error 1935.An error occurred during the installation of assembly component {B708EB72-AA82-3EB7-8BB0-D845BA35C93D}. HRESULT: 0x80070422.
    I have tried many things to try to install it and I have been unsucessful. Please help I have windows 8 64bit.

    This did not resolve my issue, it actually made things worse. I did what
    you had told me to do below, and it did not work. Tried to access the
    internet to respond back to you and my computer was not able to reach the
    internet. Tried reaching adobe support and not was able to, even tried
    calling was on the phone for 20 minutes and no one answered. I was not able
    to re install windows. Contacted Asus from another computer and they were
    not able to help me reinstall windows They had asked me to ship my computer
    back to them, due to them not being able to resolve the issue and help me
    reinstall windows. I luckily had a backup on my external hard drive and was
    able to reinstall windows 8. Spent over an hour and half trying to fix
    that. Here I am still not able to install adobe reader. I was very unhappy
    with what I was told to do and it gave me this issue.
    ·  Open an Administrator command prompt: Right-click Start > All Programs >
    Accessories > Command Prompt and select Run As Administrator. Click Allow
    for the elevation prompt
    ·  In the command prompt, type the command below:
    fsutil resource setautoreset true C:\
    The line above assumes that C: is the drive in which Vista is installed. If
    it is installed on another drive like D:, change the drive letter
    appropriately.
    ·  Restart the system.
    ·  Install Acrobat or Adobe Reader again.

  • Adobe Acrobat Reader 10.1.2 Print Issues - Windows Crash Error (2 Sided)

    Have recently had issueswith our upgrades from 10.1.1 to 10.1.2 in regards to the following:
    When printing 2 sided on a Fuji Xerox Firefly C4400 Atheros, application crashes after printing first 4 pages.
    Thus, have tried the patch fix that was recommended on cpsid_92870 however this has not fixed the problem.
    Have also tried the solution with the duplexing but still same issue, Windows crashes.
    Have also tried solution to remove Windows patch KB4332667 and still same issue.
    Screen shots will be provided upon request with the errors.
    Currently running:
    Windows XP SP3
    Adobe Acrobat Reader 10.1.2
    Printer Drivers are the latest and over 500 users on network. 485 are working on 10.1.1 which do not have this issue.
    Is there any solution or 10.1.3 patch release that will address this issue?
    Last Adobe user to work on this was Atul.

    Sonal2890, thanks for your inquiry and I will try to provide as much information as possible.
    1. What happens if inspite of using 'Print on both sides', you check Duplex setting from Properties dialog (As you do previously)?
          The Adobe Reader X Shuts down and is unable to print and displays a message stating it has incurred a problem. Please note, we are running IE7.
    2. What happens if you print with any other application (Word/notepad)
         The documents print fine. IT is only when you print this particular document which is enabled in protected mode and double sided. Have tried the patch and the resolution of unticking the duplex methodology and the issue still persists.
         Crash Logs have already been submitted already. Have added the SEnd Error Report that was provided when the error occurs. The PDF stopped printing after page 6 of a 236 page document and provided the error above.

  • I'm having the same buffering issues that other users are having when I try to send a short video from my Iphone 4S to my Apple TV.  Has anyone heard back from Apple on this bug ?

    I'm having the same buffering issues that other users are having when I try to stream a short video from my Iphone 4S to my Apple TV
    Has anyone heard back from Apple on this bug ?

    Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
    Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
    Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
    Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
    Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
    Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
    Restart your mobile device.

  • Apple tv serious buffering issues w/netflex shows

    I'm trying to figure how to resolve buffering issues with netflex on my apple tv.  I have checked my uploand/download speed and it's running at 35/35 and can watch netflex on my computer that is wireless.  I have 1 apple tv that is wireless and the other is plugged into network and still have the same problem that it is buffering every few minutes. Then sometimes it does'nt have to buffer at all and runs like a champ.  Please help!  this is very frustrating.

    Use Google’s Public DNS Server To Fix Apple TV Streaming Problems
    1. Navigate to Settings >> General >> Network and select Configure TCP/IP.
    2. Select “Manually” next to Configure IP.
    3. Dont change the IP address or the Subnet Mask and Router Address. Just click "Done".
    4. Set the DNS Address screen with the following: 008.008.008.008 and click “Done.”
    You should now be able to stream more smoothly on your Apple TV.
    If this works for you, please buy a cup of coffee for a complete stranger or some other selfless, random act of kindness.

  • How is it my Mac computer next to my apple tv gets 25 Mbps and my apple tv has buffering issues?

    Does anyone have a problem where their Mac and Apple are co-located and the computer, via WiFi, receives 25 Mbps and the Apple TV has HUGE buffering problems?
    I like Apple products, but am frankly tired of the buffering issues with the Apple TV.  When I test the network in the Apple TV, I never see, or don't know where to look, what the Apple TV streaming rate is at the time, just says "done".
    Appreciate anyone thoughts; hate to go to Ruku, but am just about done with the Apple TV's that we've purchased.
    Thanks.

    Was the speed verified using speedtest.net?
    Is the issue occuring on specific content? At specific times?
    The network test is useless, if you want to see a report of your network and check for interference use istumbler.net
    Make sure your DNS is set to the ISPs (settings - general - network - configure DNS - automatic)

  • Still Getting Buffering Issues and Slow Web Page L...

    Since I suspect this issue hasn't gone away - and I/we have been asked to post issues individually rather than clumping into a single tread.
    I just got back from Spain and after quizzing family it seems we are still getting Stream Buffering Issues (again)  (requires a refresh restart << I suspect lost packets rather than speed decrease) and webpages sometimes don't load correctly and require a refresh to load all page elements.
    Just before I left there was an Openreach engineer working on the CAB and my noise margin doubled (but given my distance from the CAB and no speed issues I think the higher margin is a bonus not a negative << so hard to get uncontradictary posts or guidance on the web about Noise Margins - speeds still ok atm according to BTW but havent been back long enough to monitor thru the day/night.
    I can only assume there are still backhaul issues ongoing.
    I notice other ISP forums eg Plusnet noting capacity contention issues but BT remains Silent.
    It's such a shame BT aren't more forthcoming to their customers and I feel really cheated/mis-sold by the whole Infinity 2 product 'never have to buffer again' - advertising hype. This has been a problem here since mid December - so we're talking a month worth of connection issues.
    Since someone will probably ask me for HH stats - here you go - apologies to all those more than 20m from the CAB who are struggling on much slower speeds (I feel for you honest) and in terms of the available speeds etc feel this HAS TO BE a BTW backhaul issue - be it from exchange or in the core.
    I'm all open to comment/solutions

    Short answer Ray - nope I only use WiFi on the phone.
    Well for the benefit of others as much as myself I am still having issues and gave up on an iPlayer (live stream) due several bursts of buffering again tonight which made me miss the bits I was really interested in.
    So...
    Eliminating anything in the home the following tests are done directly into the HH5s Gb port. I normally use a switch in this port to seperate my PC's from iThings and anything else on WiFi  (the kids)(BTFon/X) - never had any issues with my switch tho and it will push pull files to/from my NAS or transfer files around my three PCs at full speed << so no concerns there, but NOT used in these tests.
    All wired with industry Grade CAT6 << even ran a checker tool on it and no probs << yip I have such things available.
    Following Stats are after a complete shut down :
    PC Restarted without Firewall or any AntiVirus - no other network connections active and HH5 WiFi Dissabled. HH5 Power Off and Factory Reset (I've tried previously as suggested by other posters using the Openreach modem but since it didnt solve anything just went back to the HH5 to save a power socket and my HH5 can stay up for 13 or so days without issues so I don't suffer in disconnection issues dept). Ok i could buy another router but I doubt its the problem and im just **bleep** away cash for what would then be a replacement for 'not fit for purpose' supplied equipment.
    Quiet Line test = clear << tested master socket with wired phone.
    My Cabinet :
    BTWholesale Speed Test :
    Interestingly i'm getting way lower UPLOAD than the minimum even on an impaired line (I'm only about 20m from the cabinet as the cable runs - less if I want to kick it) << this does seem to fluctate a lot.
    TBB Speedtest :
    I'm open to suggestions but have just about had enuff...
    I still maintain this is a congeston issue but that BT are in total denial to customers about what traffic shaping occurs to maintain the QoS for their YouView and BTSports Customers at the expense of other data under 'abnormal conditions' like lack of capacity.
    So unless a MOD wants to jump in and resolve this quickly, I have several letters ready to go to various parts of BT - Customer Complaints/Sales(for misleading claims)/and Legal Dept. Just need the stamps + a cc copy to Ofcom. This is the last phase of having done ALL I CAN BE REASONABLY EXPECTED TO DO through the BTs compaints proceedures. so that I can send a breach of contract notification to escape this madness.
    Yours xx, a very dissatisfied customer.

  • Atv buffering (after upgrade)

    We have seen video buffering issues (and long lag time before video starts) with both ATV2 and ATV3, after the Sept 2013 software update. This happens not only with online videos, but also happens with videos stored in IPAD2, and played via AIRPLAY. Is there any way to reduce this impact?

    Hello, Sparamag.
    The most common reason for this issue would be related to router settings or out of vintage router protocol.  I would recommend taking a look at the troubleshooting steps found in the article below.  This information should provide you some insight on how to correct this issue.

  • UWL Columns Lay Out - Buffering Issue

    Hi All.
    I have a weird buffering issue in UWL.
    I removed non required UWL tabs and UWL features. My UWL now looks very slim.
    It's only contains single "Tasks" tab without any fancy WF features.
    In terms of column, it's have: subject, from, sent, priority, attachment and completed date
    When user login into UWL, columns displayed as: subject, priority, Recipients, attachment and alerttitle.
    It is different from what I configured.
    To get into required columns, user have to click on "Show", select "Completed Tasks" and back, select "New and In Progress Tasks". Once user perform this sequence then the columns layout displayed as per UWL configuration.
    Sounds like buffering issue for me.
    Any body out there have similar issue and know how to solve it?
    Thanks

    Hi,
    Clear the cache
    >UWL> UWL admin> cache admin
      then try the same.
    Hopefully it should work
    Thanks

  • Flv player buffering issue

    Hi Everyone....!
                  In my flv player,all the functionalities are well.But,one thing is,when player buffering the video,it will automatically taggled into paused state.After buffered full video completely,then only start playing.I was given buffering time=0.1.
    My solution::::;
                            By using the setInterval,Every minutes monitoring the loadedBytes.If loaded bytes increased 300Kb(hardcode) compared to previous loaded bytes,I will play() the video manually.
    videoMc.addEventListener(VideoEvent.PAUSED_STATE_ENTERED,pausedEntered);
    function pausedEntered(Evt:VideoEvent):void {
    var setInter=setInterval(checkBytestLoaded,1000)
    function checkBytestLoaded():void {
    var cl:Number=videoMc.bytesLoaded/1000
      if (cl>(CurrLoading+300)) {
      videoMc.play();
      preLoadMc.visible=false;
      CurrLoading=videoMc.bytesLoaded/1000;
    /==================================
    It was Ok for buffering issues.But,i cannot differentiate for both(Manually pressed the pause button and automatically paused due to buffering issue).If manually pressed the pause button ,video did'nt play due to above coding.
    Now i m waiting for ur solution.Atleast any one!!!

    Is that the net stream class using actionscript to assign the source?  or import fl.video.*?  All i did was import the video into flash and used action script to stop playing the video when a button is clicked.  As far as video control that is.  Is there an entire method of assigning the source of the video that i am unaware?  If so can you point me in the direction and I'll learn it.  Thanks again you have been very helpful.
