ATV2: No sorting? / multiple languages?

The new ATV software really makes me wonder whether Apple has thought this through. I have two major issues:
--SORTING / SEARCH--
OK, we get it. Apple wants to make more money on video. And I have to admit, it's nice to be able to search through the iTunes store and look up stuff by genre and all, but people who'll do this a lot also usually already have a whole bunch of stuff stored locally on their machins. Being someone who has ripped every DVD and CD I own to my computer, my Apple TV has to work with some 500 movies and 2,000 TV shows next to something above 20,000 songs coming from my iMac (and its external drives).
With software v1, I synced a video playlist with about 15 movies I'd like to watch in the coming days or weeks. I'd fire up my TV and there they were. I didn't have to remember their names - What's on the device was what I was going to watch. A nice manageable size list.
Now with v2 I see ALL of my movies at once. So, first I need to remember the titles by heart and then I need to start the ugly scrolling process that just makes me want to throw that thing out of the window. Try reaching a title starting with "W" as an example and scroll away some 250 movies... you get the idea.
So, why is there no searching, sorting or at least skipping to the next letter via the +/- buttons on the remote? Or better even, let me use my iPod Touch to control the interface. This thing actually has a keyboard, you know...?
--MULTIPLE LANGUAGES--
When iTunes finally got word of the fact that mp4 files are capable of holding more than one audio track, I happily started the time-consuming process of re-encoding all of my movies. Of course Apple will have built this into ATV 2 as well, no doubt about it! Yey, can't wait to get it!
Boy, was I disappointed to find out there is not even the slightest sign of such a functionality. No sub-menu to set your language pref for watching movies and no hip iTS styled selection-buttons awaited me after pressing 'enter' on a movie title.
ATV just takes the first language that's coded into the file. What a major mistake. Want to move people from the old silver disc to this shiny new set-top box? Then please don't disable things that are already there. The movie that's sitting on the box HAS two languages built into the file - just make them accessible.
But then again, Apple TV has turned into a shopping device, stepping away from being "iPod for your TV". We all knew that, didn't we? We just didn't think it'd be this brutal.

  • ATV2 not sorting correctly

Has anyone else noticed their ATV2 does not sort TV Shows correctly? Here are a couple of examples -
The Colbert Report is under "T" - AppleTV1 listed it under "C" as it should be
Multiple seasons of of shows are showing up separately. So instead of having a 30ROCK listing in the root list, then clicking that to get to Season 1, Season 2, Season 3 options, I have multiple 30ROCK listings at the root list.
Is there a setting I'm missing somewhere?
Or is ATV2 not sorting correctly?

    No
Or is ATV2 not sorting correctly?
    It's doing it differently.
Biggest annoyance for many is that TV Shows now have an entry for each Season rather than Seaons being listed under the main show name.
Also metadata tags used to group related films eg Star Wars, Superman etc, in a common folder no longer works.

Video playlists don't work properly either.

    Hi
If I understand correctly your data include several languages and you want to select it all together.
sorting by specific culture will lead to a bad sorting, which fit only those specific culture's rows.
you should use different approach, in this case :-)
    ** I will use UNION
to make it more clear, but you can do it in one select and several ROW_NUMBER in the same select.
First you need an accessory table (Named like UnicodeMapping) which include all unicode characters and the number of the char in unicode (a mapping unicode table). You can use ranges as well, but it will be faster for
the queries if you actually have all the characters, and not just range.
For example this table (I added English and Hebrew... Do the same with all the languages that you need):
create table UnicodeMapping (Charecter nchar(1), UnicodeNum int, CultureN NVARCHAR(100), CollateN NVARCHAR(100))
    GO
-- fill the table with main Hebrew characters, using a number table
insert UnicodeMapping (Charecter, UnicodeNum, CultureN, CollateN)
    select NCHAR(n), n, 'He-IL', 'Hebrew_CI_AS'
    from _ArielyAccessoriesDatabase.dbo.ArielyNumbers
    where
    n between 1488 and 1514 -- Hebrew
    or n between 64304 and 64330 -- Hebrew
    GO
-- fill the table with main English characters, using a number table
insert UnicodeMapping (Charecter, UnicodeNum, CultureN, CollateN)
    select NCHAR(n), n, 'En-US', 'SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS'
    from _ArielyAccessoriesDatabase.dbo.ArielyNumbers
    where
    n between 97 and 122 -- En
    or n between 65 and 90 -- En
    GO
-- Do the same with all the languages that you need, and all the UNICODE ranges for those languages
    select * from UnicodeMapping
    GO
Let's create your table and insert the data (I added a row in Hebrew for the demo, since I did not have the other languages UNICODE mapping.. you can get it from Google)
    CREATE TABLE dbo.Data (unicodeData NVARCHAR(200))
    GO
    INSERT INTO dbo.Data (unicodeData)
    VALUES
    (N'This is an example')
    , (N'To je příklad.')
    , (N'זה רק דוגמה')
    GO
Now in the query you can use UNION, and in each part, select only the rows from a specific language.
    * In order to know what language this row use, you should use the function UNICODE and compare the result to your accessory table (UnicodeMapping)
** For most cases, it is much better to store the language in the Data table, and not using this complex mapping
    each time!
Now in each UNION part you should use the right culture for the select. and you can use something like this:
    select unicodeData from (
select unicodeData, UM.CultureN, ROW_NUMBER() OVER (order by unicodedata Collate Hebrew_CI_AS) RN
    from Data D
left JOIN UnicodeMapping UM on UNICODE(LEFT(D.unicodeData,1)) = UM.UnicodeNum
    where UM.CultureN = 'He-IL'
    UNION ALL
select unicodeData, UM.CultureN, ROW_NUMBER() OVER (order by unicodedata Collate SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS) RN
    from Data D
left JOIN UnicodeMapping UM on UNICODE(LEFT(D.unicodeData,1)) = UM.UnicodeNum
    where UM.CultureN = 'En-US'
    UNION ALL
select unicodeData, UM.CultureN, ROW_NUMBER() OVER (order by unicodedata Collate Indic_General_100_CI_AI) RN
    from Data D
left JOIN UnicodeMapping UM on UNICODE(LEFT(D.unicodeData,1)) = UM.UnicodeNum
where UM.CultureN is null -- fix this for Hindi in your case
    ) t
    order by CultureN, RN
    * if you dont know in advance what languages you have, then you can use dynamic query.
In this solution I find the culture dynamically from the data itself. If you had a language column, then you dont need most of this solution.
*** If you want to sort one language before the other (as
Erland mentioned then you can use his approach)
    I hope this useful :-)

  • Database storage of multiple languages for name of a single entity

Surely I'm not the first person to have this problem, but I can't find many resources on how to solve this. Just some background on what I'm working with, I'm running a web application using the Struts framework with jdk 1.4 on a Weblogic 8.1 server connected to an Oracle 9i database, I'm using DAO for my persistence layer, and I'm not opposed to using any 3rd party software to assist in this task.
For example, say I have a database of DVDs, My application will retrieve the list of DVDs from the database to display to the user. Depending on the user's Locale I want to display the title of the DVD in that language.
This is a simple example, but the real-world application is much more complicated. The application is highly configurable meaning that through a configuration application, my internal users can add DVDs at any time, edit the title of the DVD, or add a new language that they want the title to display in, etc. When a customer logs in to the application front-end they will be able to change the language they want the application to display in at any time, and the application will need to reflect that change. The display of constant text like field labels and page text is easy using Struts but its this configurable dynamic text thats a bit more difficult.
Its obvious to me that I will need to store the multiple languages in the database in some way, I'm thinking of either storage in some xml format, or a new table hanging off the "dvd" table with languages for each dvd. Either of these options would work for my purposes, but I don't want to go reinvent the wheel when this same problem has arleady been solved. If someone could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it

One common way to handle this is to modify your key for the dvd title to include a locale identifier:
    key dvdtitle
    becomes
    key locale dvdtitle
Now your db can hold multiple translations of the same dvd title.

  • Why do I get a popup message in multiple languages requiring a shutdown and restart

Why do I keep getting a popup message in multiple languages requiring a shutdown and restart?  Has been going on for a few months.  Because of the shutdown reports have been sent to Apple upon restart.

After it restarted, did you see a dialog box resembling this one:
If so, next time it occurs click Report...
Before you send it to Apple, copy the text of the report. Paste it in a reply. Remove or obscure any personal information, should it appear.
If problems continues to occur please determine if they also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.

  • I am unable to sort multiple columns in a table created in Pages.

I had been using Appleworks up until I installed Lion and have now switched to iWork. I created a table within a Pages document and am able to sort a single column (using the Table Inspector and choosing Sort from  Edit Rows and Columns) but the Sort option is grayed out when I attempt to sort multiple columns.
In another post, someone talked about this being a problem if you have merged fields. I do not believe I have done this (to be honest I don't know the function of merging fields).
This is very frustrating as I was easily able to sort these tables in Appleworks.

Thanks for your quick response! I have been trying that but then found that Numbers would only let me print in landscape view so I had to paste the table back into Pages. Is there a way to print in portrat view (from Numbers?)
Not so. In the lower left corner of the window, there's an icon that looks like a piece of paper. If you see this:
you are in Sheet View, or normal, mode. If you see this:
You are in Print View mode. Now you see the icons for portrait and landscape modes. Click your choice. Then arrange your content to fit the pages as you wish.

  • When trying to load multiple language versions of an ibook onto my iPad only the first document loads

We have a sales tool that we have created for one of our clients in iBooks Author. They need the iBook creating in various languages.
We need to be able to supply the multiple versions of the same document (in the different languages) to our client and they need to be able to install the different versions onto their iPads. And they want the options of having multiple language versions on the same iPads.
We have already created two language versions of the document (a US English and an International English version).
The two documents have different file names, (although they are based on the same document). We have just changed the spelling of some words accordingly. (And we will be producing other language variants based on the master file).
We export the two documents via the File > Export > iBooks option. Then we are using Dropbox to upload the two files. The files are then accessed via the Dropbox App on the iPad.
We can download the first document (International English) onto the iPad and view it as normal, but when we try and then download the other document (US English) it downloads in the Dropbox App, but when you click on view in iBooks it opens the first (International English) document into iBooks.
You can only appear to have one version of the document installed at any one time. If you delete the first one you can then load the second one fine, but not both at the same time. If the file names are different it must be getting the identity of the document from somewhere else.
This has only started happening since using iBooks Author 2.
Can anyone offer any suggestions please. I've tried changing the version number in the option on export, but this doesn't seem to affect the result.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions
    John

Further to my earlier post we have now completed a test by saving our original document as a template, then creating a new document from the template, making necessary changes and saving as a new file. We can now upload the two separate versions to our iPad.
You cannot "duplicate" the file in any way, either by the File > Duplicate method from within iBooks Author or by simply Duplicating the original .iba file in the Finder, as this will cause the problem outlined above. By Duplicating you are obviously also duplicating this "hidden metadata" which is stored somewhere within the file which iBooks on the iPad is using to identify the documents. So unless Apple update the software to allow us to change that metadata we are stuck to using the Templates route. (Didn't have this problem on the last version of iBooks Author).
This works for what we are trying to do, which is create different language variants of the same book.
Working from Templates is probably the correct way to do it anyway, but might not necessarily be right for everyone.
Working in iBooks Author is proving to be a rather testing experience. You certainly need the patience of a Saint. Not sure it's of the standard we expect from Apple, but then I guess, as they are giving it away "free", they think they don't have to offer any support for it.
I think I would prefer to pay a fee for it and have a support route from Apple, rather than rely on a community of equally frustrated users who are all playing guinea pig and simply sharing their workarounds for a half baked product.
    Good luck to everyone!!!

  • With Pages 5.2 how can i use multiple language types in a single document

My Macbook Air Has the version 10.9.3
I'm used to work with the old version of Page.
But now I am using the new version of Pages 5.2 (1860).
I want to know with the new version how do I use an multiple language types in a single document option.
In the old  version of Pages I was using  Inspector -> Text -> "More" tab -> Language: British Inglese.
In the new Pages 5.2 I do not know how to do it
    Could you help me?
    melo

It's not possible to tag text with multiple languages in Pages 5.  Go back to Pages 4, which should still be in you iWork folder.
For the whole doc in Pages 5, use Edit > Spellling and Grammar > Show Spelling and Grammar.

  • Multiple languages autocorrect issues

On my iPhone, I added multiple languages and on the keyboard appears the 'globe' to choose one before writing an email. That way, autocorrect adjusts to that language. I added languages to my MacBook Air Air as well, but autocorrect sticks with English and makes my writing in other languages diffcult. Is there a way to have that same iPhone feature for my MacBook (and not having to switch languages in settings or turn off autocorrect)?

Not really.  OS X works totally differently in this area than iOS, the keyboard setting being irrelevant.  The most you can do is go to system preferences/language & text/text/spelling/setup and check the boxes for the languages you want and then set it to "automatic" and see whether it does anything useful for you.

  • How to accept multiple languages in a single report.

    Hi,
We have a Web I report built based on universe(Oracle DB- Utf-8 codepage), In Data base tables there is a data with multiple languages. But when I run Web I report it is showing the data which is in english but data other than english is showing inverted "?". Could any one please suggest me how the data to be supported in all languages for the Web I report.
    Thanks,
    Mallareddy D.

You should be creating a universe using the table with filter utilizing a column which accepts a parameter value of language and shows the data in that specific language. This concept is already used in SAP standard audit universe which accepts language for any query and shows the data in that language.. The logic for the derived column for the table should look something like below Table.LANGUAGE = @Prompt(Select language)

  • Multiple language data in the same table and indexes

    We have 8.1.5 database with
NLS_LANGUAGE=ENGLISH and NLS_TERRITORY=UNITED KINGDOM set at the database level. We also set the NLS_LANG appropriately when we index the data. We also use the preference setting BASE_LETTER=YES when indexing.
Our tables contain book titles which is what we index using interMedia. Being an online book store, this table may contain titles in English (most of the titles are in English being UK) and some titles in French. Please note the French language has accents and diacritics. Normally in a French database with NLS parameters set correctly and BASE_LETTER=YES, if we search for a title with accent / diacritic it will return the record correctly and match the rows with or without the accents (e.g. searching for video will return both vidio (not the accent on e) and video). However, with the UK settings the accents are not ignored during indexing and it only returns the records that exactly match the search word (e.g. searching for video returns only video and searching for vidio returns only vidio (note the accents on e in the last two videos)).
Question: Is there any way to appropriately index multiple language specific titles in the same database? If yes, how? Is it possible at all? Suggestions, ideas are welcome.
    null

Similar request; if there are several different languages used in a database, but a search word can be typed in by anyone and not necessarily in the default language, I still want to be able to pick up all the records (including text in blobs) in any language where my search word = the equivelant word in the other languages; eg. searching on "tree", the search would bring back a document that contained "l'arbre". I then want to set the default language, and allow the user to select a "search in these languages" option to expand the search from the default "tree" to all languages in the database.
I know about the multi_Lexer but does it extend functionality to this level?

  • Best practice in working with Adobe forms in multiple languages

We have to provide access to some Adobe Interactive Forms in both English and French, some of them from Web Dynpro application(s), some of them as callable objects from Guided Procedures.
1- We know for sure that we can have two copies of each form, one in English and one in French but that implies duplicating the FormCalc and Javascript code behind.
2- Another way if to modify in javascript all labels, captions using some javascript i.e. If lang = "E" then "My label" else "Mon étiquette" . It would work but it is not very efficient.
Is someone here has experience with this type of situation and would be willing to share his experience with me?
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi Benoit,
For Adobe Forms in multiple language you can use include text solution also . Within this solution you need to add a language parameter in your interface and then retrieve the include text in the language value ( not current language ) . Personnaly i used a lot this solution with Smartforms text .
Also i used dictionnary text for text linked with data dictionnary element . For this there is standard function module in SAP .
Anothers way is in the SFP editor you can translate your form as in SAPSCRIPT .
    Hope this help you
    Regard.
PS : if necessary i can send you a sample form with smartform/Dictionnary text solution.

    Hi!!!
First of all .. Thanks a lot for ur valuable time and suggestions. Coming to the topic... i have used all these unicodes.
