Audio Books on CD-Ethical Question

I listen to books on tape from my public library when I walk, ride, or paddle. It is a pain to carry the cassette player, extra tape(s), extra batteries. Plus the player is huge compared to an ipod. So am thinking about purchasing an ipod for this use.
I know about audible.com but am hoping to avoid the fees. Here is my question, if I download the CD to my machine and then delete the files after I listen to them is this ethical? My gut reaction is yes since I am using it just as I would the cassettes but I am interested in what others think.
Also are there tech pitfalls of operating this way?
And finally, does anyone have a GIG to Audio CD formula so that I can figure out what size iPod I will need?
THANKS!!
Scott

Unfortunately changing the genre won't make any difference. It's a tag of some kind that has to be added that doesn't seen to be accessible through itunes.
Hmm, well do you have any audiobooks that you've bought online from Audible.com or Audiobooks.com? If so, you might check the extension of the file on your library. For another work-around, you could create an Audiobooks playlist. Yes it will be under Playlists but, they'd be grouped together. I checked my iPod&iTunes Missing Manual but it didn't cover what you are trying to do in the section on Audiobooks.
Also, have you tried asking in the iTunes forum? http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=149

  • HT1725 Audio Book Question

I downloaded an audio book off of my iphone.  It downloaded part 2 and part 3 of the book but part 1 is missing.  There is nothing in my download to finish downloading, and when I try to redownload from itunes store it says already purchased.  Any sugestions?

    Hello paradiseboy,
Thanks for the question. You definitely have the correct idea, we'll need to try redownloading this purchase. The iTunes Store has detected that it is already downloaded to your device, hence the "Purchased" button. To re-download, you'll need to delete the audiobook first, then return to the purchased section.

Thank you for your prompt reply.  I have bought 1 MacbookPor 17, 1 Macbook air, 1 MacbookPro 15 , 2 ipads, 3 iphones, and this iMac27 and 2 of iMAC24 or 20 not sure   but I do not recall ever doing what you are telling me in your reply.   When you get a extended car warranty, you don't   sign up for it.. it is just there and is included in the sale.   You don't buy this warranty to use it.. You buy it, in case something happens.   Here a perfect iMAC with minimum 100 hour useage has a dead drive.  That is not normal and I should not have to even be requesting anything since most MFG offer a 3-5 year warranty on their disc drives and I believe that is probably passed on to Apple regardless if an extended warranty is purchased or not.   Customer service dictates a more flexible approach to make sure the lifetime value of a customer is not lost due to some misunderstanding.
I was in the MacStore that I purchased the unit..and they found and pulled the invoice and confirmed
the purchase of it in front of me.  I had paid with credit card and fortunately it was there in their system.   I do not also recall recieving any box or paper although most everything I ever get remains sealed.. I am not in the habit of opening anything since I have never encountered any serious issues before.
I have used my Macbookpro warranty 1 time  and that is all throughout the years I have been investing in Apple equipment.
I just recieved a letter from the store asking me to get the paper to them so they can register it... I don't recall getting any paper actually.  But I do have several boxes sealed here..  On this iMAC27, it was a hurry up and get it done thing and I don't remember taking anything extra with it.   Regardless,  my request does not seem unreasonable.
    Thank you

  • HT3951 Question on downloading Audio Books?

I purchased an audio book, which I downloaded on my iPhone 4. I'd like to download this book onto my iMac and Mac book Pro. But NO success.
I have been trying to download my purchase from iTunes store. - It does not show up in my purchase items on my iMac. Even says all purchased items are downloaded. This is NOT the case. Why can't Audio Books be syniced to your other computers (iMac and laptop). I see nothing to sync it either with iCloud.
    - Anyone know how to do this. it's driving me nuts.

    Thanks! Mr. Penguin. -That worked!
-I was able to "Transfer Purchases" from itunes, onto my iMac and my Mac Book Pro from iPhone 4.
I was being to think I Audio Books wasn't going to work for me if you could only have it one device.
    -Again Thanks!

  • Audio Book ISBN Question

Turbolister is demanding an ISBN for audio books. It will not upload without an entry. What does one do now to list a self-made audio book with no ISBN?

Many booksellers use eBay's catalogue for Books.... it is an each way to show the contents of a book... many times too easy  The recommendation is that if the catalogue is used with a book,  the information must be an exact description of the book. The catalogue has too many errors to be mandatory. The  requirement for an ISBN number applies to new books.  In some categories, other than books,  all items must have a product identifier.   My conclusion about the book catalogue  is  It is a mess looking for a place to happen.... It must be used by choice...carefully.....  and it can never be  100 % mandatory eBay appears to be making adjustments in relation to it mandatory rule..... always be careful with what is done...

  • HT201272 Purchase history in itunes on pc does not show audio books that I have downloaded. How do I download them to my itunes library?

I have the current version of itunes on my pc and my wife had downloaded a few audio books to her i phone under the same account. Her phone was damaged and was replaced. I had backed up the phone and restored the new one but her audio books were not put on the new phone. When i look in my itunes library on my pc the book does not show up. In the purchase history I can find when i purchased it and the order number but there is no option to download it. Then under the "purchased" area it gives the options of music movies tv shows apps and books (not audio books) but audio books are no where to be found. If i can get any help figuring it out i would appreciate it.

    Hey innerev2003,
Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
If, while searching through your past purchases, items are unavailable to download and show a "Purchased" button, they are still on your computer. It may be best to search your iTunes library by clicking Music, then use the search bar at the top right.
If you are completely sure the items are no longer in your library, try signing out of the iTunes Store, and then back in.

  • Free Harry Potter Audio Book???

I'm thinking of downloading iTunes because I recieved an iTunes add from Apple featuring Harry Potter 6. When I clicked the download button, it said that I would have to download iTunes first, before I could have access Harry Potter. I'm assuming that the audio book is free because there is no price shown on the add. My question is: Is Harry Potter audio truly free from iTunes? I have the Harry Potter CD's already from my local library. I love getting free audio books at the library. I couldn't imagine actually paying for an audio book. But it would be nice to have a personal copy if it was free. So are you guys all getting free audio books from iTunes? Is it worth the download?

I listen to audio books all the time, so at 50$ a pop I'd probablly have to win the lottery before I could afford everything on iTunes audio. I’m just going to continue to get my audio books for free from the library like I’ve been doing for years. Just a hint for everybody who likes audio books - if public library dosen’t have the audio book you want, you can request it and they will get it from another library in about a week, because all national public libraries are now interconnected with an exchange program. This even works with current best sellers like Harry Potter 6 which I’m enjoying right now. I know iTunes is the “in” trendy thing, and some people think the library is for nerds, but I really can’t justify having to pay so much money just to be cool. After all, its not like people are watching me listen to my audio books and saying, “Oh my, that’s not an iTunes copy, it must be a nerdy public library copy.”

  • Lost all my audio books

As it seems the folks at apple cannot help me can any one else point me in a direction that can help with the following issue?
I am a truck driver, and I use my IPad and IPhone to listen to audio books purchased through ITunes. To make things easier today I purchased an ITouch so I could listen to my audio books while driving down the road as I can keep the books on an ITouch without cluttering up my phone and my tablet is too large to keep on the dash. So I got home and there was an update available on all of the devices, and in an attempt to keep things in best working order I did the uploads, then my brother-in-law allowed me to use his computer to backup my IPad and then I was going to sync all of my devices. I followed the instructions online and when I was done all of my audio books were gone. This is several hundreds of dollars worth of books. When I called support they said I would not be able to have them anymore because they don't get backed up to the cloud. And even though both I and the support person could see the purchases of these books I was told that I would have to repurchase or send an email and wait for a reply. I tried to explain that I was a truck driver and only have limited computer availability, or down time to scan email, find a hotspot I can use, etc... While very sympathetic I was told the only options would be to send an email to the "store" or repurchase. I then asked to talk to the supervisor to see if there were any other options besides waiting for weeks to get things taken care of or spending hundreds of dollars again. I was told this wasn't an option because the person I was talking with had a supervisor who was an HR person and only helped with providing reviews and such. I asked how long the email process would take and do they have email staff available 24/7. I was told yes they are available 24/7 but that they may not respond for 48 hours or maybe in one. I then told the person I would like some kind of response within 2 hours because that is all the availability I had before having to leave out on the road again. Agent said he would be glad to give me his personal contact information but he would be getting off within 35 minutes. I said then can I have someone call me in 1 hour and 30 minutes to let me know if there was any update on how things were going. I was then informed that he wouldn't set up a call back because the next person wouldn't be able to do anything he couldn't do right then. I have waited the promised 1.5 hours and have had no response. I am disappointed in the response to my issue. I was informed several times that even though the products I bought that were developed and supported by your company couldn't be supported because it was a "store" issue. even though the problem was instigated by 1. buying another product from y'all and expecting it to work the way advertised; 2. following the instructions online that explain how to do the updates and purchase transfers; 3. have support that doesn't understand that internal process failure shouldn't effect the customer so negatively. I am very upset, disappointed, and quite frankly hurt that your company would treat people so callously and with such disregard as to say that there was only one option whether it worked or not, didn't matter what happened, or that it was a technical failure and the process on your end didn't allow for any support for the customer. And it really made me feel that your company is only about greed. I understand making a dollar and profit and the bottom line, I don't understand giving up your ethics and disregard for Social Responsibility, and Consumer Support, and standing by your product the expectation that you want people to believe your company is about. It is not surprising to me at the moment why Apple has issues regularly if this is what customers can expect from you.

For info we are fellow users here on these user-to-user forums, you're not talking to iTunes Support nor Apple.
Audiobooks (and ringtones) have always been a one-time only download from the store, other items are only potentially redownloadable for free if the remain in your country's store and if you don't move countries. I believe that all audiobooks are supplied to Apple by audible.com, so I assume that it's them that are requiring the one-time only download. No iTunes downloads (not any of your own content in the Music and Videos apps) are included in a device's backup, an iTunes restore will copy those items that are in that computer's iTunes library (did you do File > Devices > Transfer Purchases to copy them over to your brother-in-laws computer before starting the update ?), an iCloud restore will redownload what it can from the store.
The store's terms advise you to take a backup copy of anything that you download as you may not be able to subsequently redownload them - you should be keeping and maintaining a backup copy of all of you downloads.
It's possible that if the audiobooks are still in your country's store that iTunes Support will grant you a redownload - if they do then take a backup copy.

  • Can you share audio books

We purchased with the family apple id on an ipad an audio book. We are trying to share the audio book to another computer that is authorized but are unable to and the home sharing is active  what else should we do

ckuan, he is referring to 'audiobooks' not 'ebooks'. Yes, you can access and playback audiobooks on a computer.
To answer the original question. When you bought the audiobook from the iPad did you also download it to the computer? My audiobooks share across the network and with my iOS devices just like all the other media I have including music, movies and TV shows. It will also get synced back to the computer you use to sync with your iPad for backups. It can be shred from that computer as well.
Be aware you can't share it from the iPad to a computer. You will need to download it separately on the computer from the iTunes Store. It will not be a new purchase it should download for free since you already paid for it on the iPad. It should show up in your iTunes in the Cloud purchased list when you view it in iTunes on a computer. Look for your purchased list on the right-hand side of the iTunes windows under Quick Links.

Hi - what I neglected to include in the question is that the book was uploaded on Google Drive.  It sounds like I will need to make the book a playlist and upload it.

  • How to transfer purchased audio books?

I purchased audio books while using my PC. I have now converted to a mac. I burned my audio books to a DVD and I have reformatted my Ipod to Mac but can't transfer my audio books from the DVD back onto my Ipod.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly,
I have only ever synced my ipodtouch once and that was before I'd bought the audio books in question on alaptop that got run over by a bus. (i know..... tell me about it).
I reinstalled itunes (not on the same one ) and authorized my laptop and signed in etc... But i can’t see where the purchased audio booksare.

  • Audio books tab in itunes missing

    Hi
Hope someone can help me find my audio books. They used to appear in a tab in the itunes music section along with artists etc but now I can't find the catagory at all. Does anyone know what to do about this, I've tries tapping on the audio book as it's playing, in the control centre but this just took me back to music. Am Imissing something? Surely Apple didn't miss/forget/delete this in the upgrade;(

    Hey ginx13,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are looking for the audiobooks category in your music application. This category defaults to the "More" tab, and only appears if audiobooks are currently on your device (which it sounds like they are).

Tired of tapping More? To rearrange the buttons, tap More, then tap Edit and drag a button onto the one you want to replace.

  • Since I've updated to iOS 6 I am unable to use the next/back buttons from Headphone for audio book chapters.

Since I've updated from iOS 5 to iOS 6 I am unable to use the next/back buttons from Headphone for audio book chapters.
This is working fine for albums but are broken for audio books.
The back button refers always to the first chapter of the audio book (very annoying if you are in the middle of an audio book) and the nex button goes one level higher back to the selection of the audio book itself.
In iOS 5.0 it was still possible to navigate throught the audio book chapters using these buttons.
This still happens in iOS 6.1.
    Is this a known bug?
    Does any solution exist?
    Thx,
    Oliver

To gdgmacguy your a f****** idiot for one I'm having the same problem as pennymar. And you tell me to quit whinning. You got more problems then the iOS 6 you did not answer my question nor the other 13 or whatever you replied to within a 30 min time frame. You must got nothing better to do then to harass people and to pretend you know something about apple products. Which you don't from what I've read the other advices you should have gave to other people. But you didn't you replied a question back to the people asking a question. So if your not gonna use these community forums the right way don't use them at all.

  • Audio Book with multiple CDs

I am using windows XP and am new to using iPod. I bought an audio book. This audio book is in the form of multiple CDs and each CD contains multiple .wma files. I copied them to my Windows PC into different directories called "CD1", "CD2" etc. each containing multiple tracks - "Track 1.wma", "Track 2.wma" etc. etc.
Obiously the track sequences do matter for the book to make sense. Now, how do I transfer these into my iPod (without loosing the track sequence) from my PC?
    Advice appreciated. Thanks

    Sir,
were you able to obtain an answer to your question? I have the same problem and I am unable to determine how to load audio books from CDs that I own. The chapters are interleaved as they are loaded from one CD to the next and on to the Itunes library. Additionally, how do you get the files to the audio books section? I certainly wish documentation was better on this and other issues. Please let me know if you discover the solution to importing audio CD's. Thank you. [email protected]

  • How do I burn this audio book?

I have a audio book, in the main / only folder, it has 14 folders each labeled cd1, cd 2, cd3, all the way up to cd14.
Each folder has a number of mp3 files in it from 18 - 22 in number.
Each cd folder is approx 40 mb in size & each mp3 file is about 2.5 mb each.
How do I burn this and how many folders can I fit on 1 cd?
    Thanks for any help

14 folders each about 40MB is about 560MB total. Most blank CDs can hold 700MB. So in that sense, you only need one CD.
But if I can answer a question with a question: Where do you want to use this CD? If you just want a backup follow this article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303599
If you want to be able to play these files in a CD player, then it depends on the CD player. Most newer CD players can play burned CDs, some can even play MP3s. If your intended use is in an MP3 CD player, follow this article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93124
Otherwise you'll need to burn an audio CD (well, 14 audio CDs) following this article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301917
