Audio input gain increases automatically

I use both skype and google voice (via gmail) for VOIP calls. In both cases, regardless of the client settings (there aren't many for google voice), the system audio input will increase on it's own over the course of a call.
I've had this issue for years and i've never seen an actual resolution. Stumpped.

May have found the answer here:
http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/chat/YAw2z4xBdyM/a5QmWADpxEEJ
Plist files in OSX can be of 3 different formats:
- Binary (just like the one used by com.google.GoogleTalkPluginD.plist
- XML
- JSON
Don't bother editing the binary file (by performing guesstimates, editing with an hexa editor etc); it won't work.
Instead, perform the following:
1 - Make a copy of the file to your desktop: cp ~/Library/Preferences/com.google.GoogleTalkPluginD.plist ~/Desktop/
2 - Convert the Binary Plist to an XML Plist: plutil -convert ~/Desktop/xml1 com.google.GoogleTalkPluginD.plist
3 - Edit the file with an editor (Aquamacs, TextEdit) and set the Audio Flags value to 1
4 - Convert the file back to Binary: plutil -convert binary1 ~/Desktop/com.google.GoogleTalkPluginD.plist
5 - Copy the file back to the Preferences directory: cp ~/Desktop/com.google.GoogleTalkPluginD.plist ~/Library/Preferences/
6 - REBOOT (closing and reopening the browser won't work as the plugin runs on the background. We "could" kill the process to have it restarted, but we'll leave it simple and reboot the machine).
That's all it takes. Now feel free to set your mic volume to the value you desire and it will STAY at that level while using Google Talk (it won't auto adjust based on background noise).

    It went to NOKIA care 5 times and finally they REPLACED my handset with NEW ONE. Still i faced the same problem.
    Only thing, what i did was, i have not configured my Mail account. Afterwards it worked properly.
    Today again old story. Audit is getting increased automatically in handset and receving end people are not able to hear my voice properly. They are facing difficult time in receving my call.
    I have the latest firmware in my mobile. 012.004.00.01
    IS THERE ANY FIX FOR THIS SOLUTION. IT MADE ME FRUSTRATED LIKE ANYTHING.
    Any Solution will be most welcome.

    Hi , Thanks for your reply once again.

  • Audio Input Gain Too High - Line Input

    Using GarageBand, I'm trying to record audio on the line level input. It records, but it's always too high. I can hear the distortion and see the clipping in GB. Using System Preferences Sound, I set the input level all the way to 0 and it makes no difference.
    My sound source is the line-level output of an 8 channel PA.
    Any ideas?

  • My volume key not working volume increase automatically, how to mute all audio

    my volume key not working, volume increase automatically if i go to audio settings i can adjust, but  again volume increase automatically , how to mute all audio

    Did you already try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comeback again?
    If this does not boring back a working volume control, and to rule out a software issue, set it up as new device, explained here:

    If still no luck, you'll have to get it checked by visiting an Authorized Apple Service Provider or Apple Store next to your place.

  • Can editors using Mountain Lion check the Device Input Gain slider in the Record Audio tool is working?

    Please see this thread for full details.

    It appears that for some people, upgrading to Mountain Lion 10.8.2 kills the Device Input Gain slider functionality in the Record Audio tool.
    Could you post your findings?

    Thanks Luis, it looks as though it is quite widespread, if not universal.
    As you can see in the link above, booting back into Snow Leopard 10.6.8 completely restores the functionality for me, so it looks as though it's ML that kills it.
    I've sent a feedback to FCP X.

  • Lock or remove input gain for USB audio in VISTA

    Dear NI Zone
    Long time reader, first time poster.
    I'm in development of a sound level meter application. Program is working flawlessly, everybody is happy:-) The application acquires data thru a designated "non NI" USB soundcard. The main advantage of this soundcard is the fact that there is no posibility of altering the input gain, as it has no volume buttons, and the input gain slider in the windows control panel is not available. This is a key aspect as this ensures that the calibration, and thus accuracy of the measurement system, can not be altered by the end user..
    This is all dandy, however, the new longhorn driver and the new "audio endpoint" topology implemented in VISTA SP1 and apparently in WIN7, suddenly has revealed the input gain slider in the VISTA control panel, and it is thus no longer possible to ensure the calibration of the system. This is very unfortunate.. So far I'm getting by with only supporting XP and including the old XP control panel in the install so the enduser, can overwrite the new VISTA control panel to remove the gain slider..
    This is off course not a viable solution since the problem seems to continue into Win7..
    Therefore:
    Is there any bright mind in this forum who can help me in ensuring that the input gain, as found in the windows control panel, when running my LV application is locked? This could be either thru a reg_edit string locking the input slider, it could be thru a call to the win API or similar... As I'm clueless towards how this may be obtained I would appreciate any ideas or solution..
    I'm fairly skilled in LV programming, but not so much in calling DLL's or external code, so any suggestions in that direction including sample VI's would be much appreciated..
    I thank you all in advance for helping out on this.

    I do not know if this is any help. But on the link provided it is some example code. If you have or know someone with Visual C knowledge, you can write a DLL and call it from Labview. Keep things simple. Just call the DLL with some numbers as argument.
    Here is link on how to make a dll in visual studio and call from Labview http://decibel.ni.com/content/docs/DOC-1690

  • Why are multiple audio tracks causing one of the track levels to increase automatically when the other doesn't have an audio file in it?

    So I'm editing an interview and during subtitle sequences in the interview where there is no audio in the interview audio track, the levels automatically rise in the background music track.  Here's an illustration of my problem...
    http://i58.tinypic.com/2rh3atf.jpg
    I also troubleshooted by clicking the Solo button on the background music track and the music plays at the elevated level the whole way through when it's set to be the only track to play.  So for some reason, the interview audio track (when it's playing sound) is causing the background music track to decrease in level.  I get the same thing on exports.  Why is Premiere messing with my levels automatically?  No phone or chat support so I'm left asking the forums, thanks for the great customer service Adobe.

    Hi Richard,
    Appreciate you taking the time to help out.  There are absolutely no effects whatsoever on the audio or video tracks.

  • Audio line level input gain too high

    I've had this problem since getting my macbook 3 months ago. The line level input gain seems to be set very high no matter what & it still is too high after going into system preferences/sound & adjusting the input volume all the way down. I bought a Griffin imic thinking that might help getting around the problem, but it's just as overloading with the imic as using the macbook's built-in line input. Has anyone else experienced this? Any fixes?

  • Adjusting USB input gain/trim with Mackie ProFX8 mixer (Mac OS)

    Is there any way to adjust (increase) the input gain coming from the USB interface of a Mackie ProFX8 mixer in Audition?
    According to Audition documentation, input trim should be managed via the Sound Preferences.  However, since the ProFX8 just uses generic USB audio codec drivers, there are no input level controls.  So, I can't make adjustments there.
    Is there any kind of input trim within Audition itself that will allow me to increase the input levels coming from the mixer?
    I know that I can push the main output volume of the mixer, but I shouldn't need to run my channel and main output faders at +5dB over unity to get an acceptable input into Audition.
    Does anyone have experience pairing this mixer with Audition that can help?
    Thanks!
    Jay

    "No Audition doesn't supply any kind of input level control..."
    [MJ] This is the assumption that I have been making.  Thank you for confirming it, though.
    "...That is normal and, of course, can be adjusted in Audition after recording."
    [MJ]  Thank you for these additional data points, as well.  I will double check all of my levels and see if I am indeed coming in about -15dB when I'm hitting 0 on the mixer meter.  Just having this information is very useful for understanding what is considered "normal" and what is not.
    Great feedback.
    Thank you!

  • Audio Inputs no longer work after upgrade to 10.4.10

    Anyone else having trouble with audio inputs after upgrading to 10.4.10? Here's my deal:
    MacPro dual 2.66, 4GB RAM, running 10.4.10 as of this morning.
    Upgraded to 10.4.10 today and the mic on my Plantronics USB headset quit working. 'Phones still work. Here's what I did:
    1. Tried multiple audio input devices. None work.
    2. Tried all USB ports, problem persists.
    3. Tried the 1/8" audio input, problem persists.
    4. Zapped PRAM, problem persists.
    5. Called AppleCare and they had me do an Archive and Install on the system software, which installed 10.4.7 and the problem went away. Then, at their suggestion, I let Software Update reinstall 10.4.10 and the problem came back.
    6. Rebooted the system from a 2nd internal drive running 10.4.9 and the problem went away.
    Seems pretty clear to me that this issue is with the OS, yet Apple's support staff insists the problem is "with the data on my boot drive". Thing is, the data on the "problem" boot drive consists of exactly the same applications on the other drives, and only those applications. There ** is no ** data on the boot drive other than the OS and some applications. Yet the other drive I can boot from that runs 10.4.9 and doesn't cause audio input issues contains all sorts of junk.
    So, to reiterate, I'm booting from a clean boot drive with nothing but OS 10.4.10 and some pro applications on it and the audio input won't work. I boot from into any other Mac OS on this drive or any other and all is well. Yet this problem is supposedly with my data?
    Is anyone else out there seeing issues like this?

    I used a UVC-compliant USB Logitech camera (the
    Fusion) driverless
    under OS X 10.4.9.
    FWIW, none of these devices are actually driverless. They rely on drivers either supplied separately by some company (not necessarily the vendor of the product) or bundled into the OS. Usually, the bundled drivers are based on open standards like UVC mentioned in the link. Apple writes a lot of the bundled driver code itself but some of it comes from outside sources like LSI or Intel.
    An unfortunate fact of life is that open standards are not always as well defined as they ideally should be. Another is that certain companies sometimes set their own standards that aren't quite compatible with open ones, sometimes to implement real or imagined improvements on an open standard, sometimes to gain a marketing advantage.
    The good news is that the market usually -- eventually -- favors the open standard. The bad news is that it often takes some time for this to happen, leaving users -- particularly Mac users, who still represent a smaller market force than those using Windows -- without a solution for an uncomfortably long period of time.
    Your best or only recourse for now may be to downgrade to 10.4.9 until this gets resolved, but you should also take into account that not all users are having these problems so it may be something other than the update itself that is causing the problem. I just video chatted with a colleague using an Intel Mac mini who is having no problems whatsoever -- we are both puzzled why he is unaffected while others are.
    Sorry this couldn't be of more help.

  • Can I use HDMI port on my Macbook Pro for digital audio INPUT?

    Trying to find a way to get digital audio input to my new MBP with retina.  HDMI supports audio and video, so can I use that port as an input?

    It is not recommenced to use TimeMachine in a partition, either on the boot drive or externals because of problems in the past with that arrangement.
    You also need hardware protection in addition to software protection.
    If you want to do what I do, which is have a second 50% partition bootable clone of the first.
    1: Use BootCamp software to create yourself a 50% sized partition, then exit the program. (you also can do it in Disk Utility, but it's tricky)
    2: Head to Disk Utility and select the BOOTCAMP partition and change it's name and format to OS X Extended Journaled.
    (To map off bad sectors in advance, use Disk Utility Erase with the next to last on the right selection, improves reliability and makes for faster reads)
    3: Download Carbon Copy Cloner, now select your Macintosh HD partition and clone it to the second partition.
    4: Whenever you want to boot from the second partition, just hold the option key down on the keyboard to select it to boot from.
    You can access the folders on the second boot partition as well, to grab deleted files you accidentally erased (which is a rare thing for most to occur) however you should leave it alone and as a clone.
    You can update the clone when you need to, or schedule it to run automatically.
    You should also do this occasionally with a external drive, as the internal drive can die and take both partitions with it.
    I currently do this with my laptop, that way if I'm mobile and have a serious issue, I can boot from the cloned partition in seconds without carrying a drive around. If I need large space for something I wasn't aware of, I can erase the clone partition and later clone it again.
    Software does all the work, just pick a time your not using the machine and let it work. Painless really.

  • How to get audio input with no line in jack?

    Apologies for this very basic question but I am increasingly lost and confused the more I search.
    I want to convert some audio cassette tapes into mp3. I have an older mac mini that I believe does not have any kind of audio input jack. I have heard from various people that 1) I just need a cable to convert RCA output to USB input (but as far as I can tell such a cable doesn't exist) 2) I need to buy a sound card 3) I need a special standalone piece of hardware.
    Which one is right? This is just a one time project and the audio is only voices so I don't want to spend any more than I need to.

    The Griffin iMic would work well for this.

  • Flash Media Live Encoder 3 Audio Input Level Resets (XP)

    I am using Flash Media Live Encoder 3 on a Windows XP computer, with an Ospery-100 capture card for video and a generic sound card line in for audio input. It works fine, except for every time I launch the encoder or even just stop and start encoding (i.e. without closing the application), it  resets the line in audio level of my sound card to maximum--not good, as the appropriate setting is actually the minimum. If I don't remember to open the Windows mixer and turn it back down, the audio clips like crazy. No other application I use changes the input leve of my sound card in this way. What is happening here? Any ideas? Any solutions? Thanks.

    Have you checked volume slider position in FMLE? If it is set at 100% it would increase the audio level of sound card. Drag slider to lower value to reduce the volume level.

  • 9.2 Update killed my audio input monitoring during play!

    I can monitor my audio input while I'm stopped, but as soon as I loop and play (not in record mode) it automatically kills monitoring of the signal. YET, I can still record if I need.
    This didn't happen until I updated to 9.2.
    Has anyone else had this problem?
    Thanks!

    I got other problems after updating Logic, they occured twice. One was not having 'open recent session' and the other was not having 'incompatible' plugins menu item in Logic AUs. Perhaps this is similar to my problem and the solution was to trash Logic preserences and rebooting. Try it, you don't loose anything that way. I'm not at my mac now but the preferences can be in MacHD/library/Preferences (start with com.apple.logic) or in your user Library/preferences. There are 2 files and I'm not sure which one but if you trash both (without deleting the files, only trash) you can try if it brings the requested feature back. One of the files will reset your settings but if you restore it after the test you will have them back (of course with the 'bug' itself. Later today I will pot you the exact one to throw.

  • Adjusting audio output based on an audio input!

    Kay so I live in an older apartment where my AC bombards my eardrums every ten minutes.  My stereo master slider on my mixer is my best friend for overcoming this inaudible catastrophe!  Men, I need you to help me link my microphone to my audio output gain so one of my arms doesn't get very strong compared to the other.  I've been working out my other arm on a daily basis, but it's coming to the degree where I can't walk in a straight line.  To prevent the repetitive volume increases and decreases and keep me from walking in circles, is there some software I can use to auto-adjust the gain from my machine?

    Ok,
    Looked simple, but fun, so I did it. Where you go
    #!/bin/bash
    MAX=20.0
    MULT=1.0
    TIME=5
    function volume(){
    arecord -f S16_LE -r44100 -d $TIME 2>/dev/null|sox -t wav - -t raw /dev/null \
    stats 2>&1 |awk '/RMS lev dB/ {print $NF}'
    level=$(volume)
    while true; do
    new_level=$(volume)
    diff=$(echo $new_level - $level|bc -l)
    level=$new_level
    adjust=$(echo "
    v=$diff*$MULT;
    if (v < $MAX && v > $MAX*-1){
    if (v > 0) {
    print v,\"%+\"
    } else {
    print -v,\"%-\"
    } else {
    print \"0%+\"
    }"|bc -l)
    echo $diff,$adjust
    amixer set Master -i $adjust >/dev/null
    done
    Its use arecord and sox to calculate the noise and bc to do some math (because bash is dumb =[). Some parameters MAX is the maximum absolute adjustment that can be made, MULT is a multiplicative factor applicated to the difference of dB measured, and TIME is how much seconds to record in each pass.
    TIME can be used to adjuste the reaction time, a small value (like 1) react nearly instantaneous but a bigger value like 6 give some margin for rapid pops in the noise and only adjust if the noise difference existed in much part of TIME window.
    When I use pulseaudio MULT=1 works ok, but with alsa I need MULT=5.
    About pulseaudio, I started using it this week, and I really think that using pulse audio you have a lot more clear/cool/functional solution, but I need to explore it...
    I dont know much about sound theory, so I dont know if I choose the best 'volume' description, but you can look at sox man pages and look for something more adequate (look for stats and stat).
    PS. I hate bash... zsh is so much better (but, python is better than all) I only used bash because, uhhh I dont know the reason... masochism?
