Audio Levels, Audio Meters Questions

Just made the switch from avid and want to confirm that I'm doing everything right when it comes to audio.
The left side of the avid meter (digital meter? not sure if this is the right terminology) goes from -90 to +0. This is the meter I was paying a attention to on the avid - I would set my tone to -20dB and have my peeks hit -10dB. On the right side of the avid meter is the vu meter (analog meter?). Never really payed attention to this one.
The meter in final cut looks more like the vu meter in avid and this kind of throws me off. I'm thinking its a digital meter, like the left side of the avid meter, but I'm not sure. If I'm right, why does the avid meter end at +0 and the final cut meter goes to +12?
Right now I'm mixing to between -12 and -10 with tone set to -20, using the numbers on the final cut meter? Does this sound right for broadcast?
Thanks you

actually, the FCP audio meter goes from -96 to 0. At least on every version I've seen. But based on your tone level settings at -20 and mixing between -12 to -10 you are matching our broadcast audio standards exactly. so i don't think you will have any issues.

  • Missing Tool Palette & Audio Meters!!!

    Hi all. My first post.
A question: Is there a way to reset or lock the windows beyond simply Window > Arrange > Standard ?
The above function restores the browser, timeline and clip viewers, but the tool palette and audio meters have moved off-screen. I've tried every combo of maximizing, moving and minimizing the other windows, but with no luck. All I can see is the pointer tab on the tool palette. Very frustrating indeed.
My own fault, since I mess around with the window and tool positioning so much. Please offer any suggestions or similar experiences. Thanks.
    -Chris

Thanks Tom for responding! Even though closing and relaunching the program didn't work, when I restarted the box it worked fine. The palette & all windows reset.
    Thx,

  • Audio Meters "peak indicator" gets stuck after prolonged use of Premiere Pro CC.

Does anyone else have this issue? After using Premiere for a while (maybe an hour or so straight) the audio meters peak indicator will not reset when you start/stop. What do I mean? If your audio level peaks or goes into the red, it stays there like it should letting you know that the levels had hit above +0db. This is normal. This is good. But usually when you stop the timeline and start again, that red peak indicator is reset and disappears. But for me, after prolonged use (which is say about an hour or so), the meters stop resetting and the red does not go away unless I click on the meter to make it disappear. It looks like this even after stopping/starting the timeline:
***Meters work fine for the first 30mins - hour or so of editing. Hitting stop and then start again resets the meters as it should.
***Eventually the peak indicator (see screenshot above) gets stuck and won't go away. The meters continue to work fine, but the red does not go away.
Only way to then reset it is by clicking on the meter itself. Restarting Premiere Pro CC will put everything back to normal again and it should work fine again...for a while...before its starts to lock up again. This issue was present in 7.0.0 as well as the newly updated 7.0.1  I'm on a 2011 27" iMac with 16gb of RAM. (I've submitted a bug report, but curious if this happens to others.)

Maybe it's just you who has that much clipping audio.  Most of us tend to avoid that.

As much as I wish all my audio were perfectly leveled at all times... You mix live weddings with DJ's that don't know their own equipment with layers of audio in post and its a recipe for some +0db audio.
In all seriousness, I do hope that if others see this bug, they'll chime in and that this bug gets fixed. It's annoying.

  • Audio metering in QT

    Hi
I need to prepare technical specification for qt movies regarding audio levels. How can I make professional audio metering in qt? Any ideas?

Both applications would plat the file identically.
QuickTime Player (not X) has A/V Controls window that allows you to change some of the audio settings (bass, treble and even pitch shift).

  • Pane with audio meters and SFX library not available

All my panes are showing up in every layout except for the pane with the SFX library and audio meters. I properly removed/re-installed FCS, and the pane is still not available. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

I can't find it, but try trashing the STP preferences. I assume you've already gone through the menu to try to turn it on.

  • How do you get the Audio Meters panel to open?

On page 278 of the PDF it states:
    Audio Meters panel
    1. Select Window > Audio Meters.
    2. Right-click the panel and use the options to do the following…
In the PDF, a nice little graphic of Audio Meters is shown underneath (1) (see below).
When I go to the Window menu, however, Audio Meters is permanently ticked. Nothing I do can untick it. I can open the Audio Mixer. I understand how that works – looks similar to the Tascam Portastudio 144 I've had since the early 80s – but when I try Audio Meters… nothing.
    Any suggestions?

    Reset or change workspaces.

  • Dropped frames when playing section in the timeline w/audio, Viewer plays fine. Plays for 1 sec, no sound, nothing on audio meters. Problem out the blue, made no conscious changes. FCP 7.0.3. iMac, 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5. OS10.8.4. Thanx.

New to FCP. Dropped frames when playing section in the timeline w/audio, Viewer plays fine tho. Plays for bout 1 sec with no sound, nothing showing coming through the audio meters. Problem came out the blue, made no conscious changes to settings. FCP 7.0.3. iMac, 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5. OS10.8.4. If any other info needed please let me know, will be happy to provide it. Thanx.

Thank you for the help. Below is my Source footage and sequence settings.
The other footage I have on the timeline is an mp3 file made in Garage Band and some footage I sent to Motion to edit. I do have some offline media on there since I switched computers but FCP had been working fine for a few months with it on there. I have not tried trashing my FCP Preferences. If I did would I have to back up my project?

  • How to get audio meters in capture in Premiere CC?

I need to capture in Premiere CC from an old tape machine that outputs in S-Video.  Audio comes in through a Matrox I/O.
Picture comes in fine but I do not see capture audio meters to adjust the sound.  In Adobe CS6 I do get the audio metering.
Is there a way to get the audio meter in CC?

You dont modulate on capture. (digitising) eg analogue to digital.
You do that once in the system if need be.

  • Audio Meters view in Dual Mono configuraton

Can't understand why, setting a clip in Dual Mono configuration in the event browser, FCPX set the Audio Meters window in Mono view
whereas the same clip put on the timeline set the Audio Meters in the normal stereo view
It didn't happen in previous FCPX versions

IIn the browser the meters are looking at the clip. In the timeline you're seeing the meters for the project, probably the default stereo.

  • Audio meters are not in synce with the audio when viewing frame by frame?

I am running Final Cut Pro 4.5 and my audio meters work just fine during playback. But when I am viewing the sound frame by frame the audio meters do not move at all. I thought it was a memory issue, so I added another gig of memory and the audio meters still do not move when I try frame by frame.

I'm unclear if this also worked in FCP 4.5<<</div>
    It does.

  • Audio meters on screen/off screen option gone in 09?

I haven't used this feature in a while but I really need it for the project I'm doing right now.
Remember when GB had the option to turn the graphical interface for the audio meters on and off. Turning them off graphically would make them slide to the left and hide them.
    Is this gone in 09?
I'm working a project with 32 tracks and I'm moving tracks up the screen so every track is in the correct descending order but I keep sliding my mouse across the audio slider inadvertently and it would be nice to just get rid of the sliders for a while.

Well I'm done arranging the 32 tracks (more to come for sure) but I did accidentally slide my cursor over the fader and the pan knob about 3 times. Luckily I hit save every time I moved a track so I could revert.
Theres a lot of things I don't understand the "why" about when it comes to the latest GB iteration.
For instance the media browser seems like a good Idea but when it comes to browsing audio it only really works for stuff you have inside iTunes. It would be really nice if the media browser let me browse and listen to the loops I have spread across 2 external TB drives and a 750GB external drive.
Instead I have to use an app called AudioFinder.

  • Audio meters window disappeared

Subject line pretty much states it. I launched FCPX this morning to and suddenly the audio meters window was blank; like the space for it was in the window layout but it was blank gray. I went to the Windows menu and the selection was Hide Audio Meters. Were I to select it the blank area would slide away just as it should. Select Show Audio Meters and the blank window reappears.
I've restarted the app several times; restarted the computer. Didn't help.
    Thoughts?

The only thing I had done right before this issue arose was this:
As this was clearly becoming  large project I bought a 2TB RAID drive to dedicate to it. The entire project was on a smaller, more congested drive. I hooked up the RAID and moved the entire project over to it. I changed no file names and FCP was not running when I did it. I put the original Events/Project folders in a new folder so as not to confuse FCP when I relaunched it. FCP itself and all its ancillary files remained in place on my system drive.
When I opened FCP everything was fine and I even did some work on the project. It wasn't until I stepped away from it and then returned that I lost first the audio meters, then the scrubbing buttons and now--new revelation--many clips in the Events library claim to be missing. It's as tho this project is slowly, incrementally dissolving!
An odd twist: I just switched back to the original version of this project thru the various folder swaps necessary and the job, its cilps and the audio functions are back in place. Can't understand this. The Project/Events folders of the respective versions have identical contents. (except for that small bit of work I did right after the move)
At present, the audio functions have returned in full but the clips remain reported as missing. As a side note, another major ongoing project, the folders/files of which were not touched, remain fully functional in FCP.
    I'm at a loss.

  • Ridiculously simple audio editing question for Garage Band

Ok, so this is really a fundamental
    question. It concerns editing technique.
In analog mixing, the editor put
the sounds to be saved in the right
places on each of several tracks --
    narration, sound effects, lip sync,
music, etc. The tracks were then
all locked together and the mixer
adjusted the volumes to either save
    or reject audio information.
A blank master received the information
and that was your final product,
in sync, sprocket by sprocket, with
    the video.
My question, then, is, how do you
do it in digital multitrack such as
Garage Band? Are you aiming to have
4 or 5 tracks all level controlled
or do you simple erase unwanted
sound, or what exactly do you do,
in post production? If you are going
to do a voice over, then you have to
do a mix at some point, not just a
cut and paste. What's the philosophy,
if you don't mind my asking?
    Thanks,
    Ed

Wow... you gave me flashbacks to a movie soundtrack I scored, with separate reels of tape all synced up and whirling away for final mixdown!
To answer your question as best I can in a paragraph or two, digital mixing is unlimited compared to analog. Whereas tape has a physical limit, you can always add another digital track (there are limitations to digital, but they are becoming harder to reach as systems become increasingly powerful). So no need to erase. Editing is also a breeze. Digital tracks are endlessly malleable, with virtually every parameter available for automation.
Sometimes you might mix down to stems or mix everything down to a stereo master (or alternative mixes) for post production. Similarly, in post, they can deal with huge numbers of digital tracks from different sources.
In terms of a professional workflow, Logic is the more typical choice over Garageband, and includes a number of features designed for scoring to picture: variable sample rates, frame rates, etc.
Gain staging in digital recording is different than in analog, and it requires a different approach to achieve excellent sounding results. But the digital workflow is so much more flexible, forgiving, and economical, that it has been the death-knell for the analog workflow. Infinite bussing, routing, mixing, comping, storing, stemming... infinite possibilities, really!

  • Digital vs Analog audio meters

    hi,
so i'm dumping from final cut to a digital betacam tape and wanted to know if anyone has a rule of thumb when setting your sound levels on the deck compared to the bars and tone's level in final cut.
    thanks.

    Is this a trick question?
Digital Betacam format supports four channels of 20-bit/48kHz digital audio.
If on the other hand you want to know about outputting digital audio to analog then there are digital levels used to correspond to 0 dB on an analog meter:
    1. –12 dBFS: This level is often used for 16-bit audio such as DV audio, and for projects
with compressed dynamic ranges, such as those for television or radio.
    2. –18 or –20 dBFS: This level is more common on projects with higher dynamic range,
such as professional post-production workflows using 20- or 24-bit audio.
