Audio nightmare

I recorded a four person interview using four wireless lavs and two cameras. The sound of the two main speakers is somewhat 'crunchy' and there is some reverberation in the audio tracks, the sound from the lesser important two people is great, no reverb but the main speakers sound distant.
My questions:
1. What can I do to improve the sound of the two main speakers? Is there an audio filter I can use to reduce the crunchiness of the sound? should I boost the sound coming from the other mikes, even though it sounds distant?
2. Do you recommend saving the audio and video separately? I read in the manual that if saved separately, they should go to different disks.

This is usually a symptom of their mics not being on. You're picking them up from the other mics.

Nope. What i undiplomatically recommend is that you reshoot and use a mixer, not two cameras.

  • Adobe ends your audio nightmares once and for all!

Are you plagued occasionally, like me, with less than perfect audio?
    Fret no more.
Adobe has the solution and you don't have to pay a fortune, as the technology is available in their budget Premiere Elements.
Take a look at this in-depth tutorial (between 15 to 40 seconds in) and hear how your audio problems can be consigned to the dustbin of history.
No need any more to worry about the quality of the audio as you shoot, for it can all be rectified with a click of a button in post.
    Come on Apple!
Neither Legacy FCP or FCP X has such technology.

I don't know about overwhelming, but the DVD specification (which was not developed by Apple) calls for the audio to be sampled at 16-bit/48KHz (I think you might also be able to use 96KHz as well). This is what the software expects. If you choose to use another sample rate then the software may or may not be able to "fix" it in post. The real problem is that many camcorder manufactures set the audio to 12-bit by default.

  • Mobile Audio Nightmare in Georgetown

I purchased my wife a new Cadillac DTS in February. During the first couple of weeks I started to build up her new system, using Crutchfields technicians.
We picked out a new DVD head unit, installation plastic kit, front door speakers (5 1/4), rear view camera, and steering control harness so that she'd maintain her steering controls. We live an hour away from the Georgetown TX Bestbuy, but I drive into town daily for work. Not having a lot of spare time, I elected to have them install the system.
I called the Georgetown location Wednesday March 5th to schedule the install. I was informed the next available date was Wednesday March 12th. So I agreed to this date, I informed the tech of my vehicle year make and model and told him I'd only need a wiring harness that goes from the factory harness to my new unit. I was told no problem, and he'd see me at 11am the next Wednesday. On Saturday the 8th, I received a call from him informing me that he could not find a wiring harness and that I'd have to go to Bestbuys website to order it. So, I did this, however, the harness did not arrive till Thursday the 13th. (Although I selected the 2nd day air option when ordering.)
On Thursday, when it arrived, I called the tech to see about getting the car done, I was then informed his next free day would be Wednesday the 19th at 11AM. No problem, I arrived Wednesday the 19th at 11am and dropped the vehicle off after signing some paperwork and showing the technician how I want the microphone mounted, and the rear view camera. I informed him of where in the car all of my audio stuff was located and left. Around 4pm, I started calling for an update and was told it would be ready at 5:45pm.
I was dropped off by my assistant at 6:15ish, and greated the tech. He informed me that the speakers I purchased could NOT be installed because the car called for 6x9s, not the 5 1/4s that Crutchfield told me I needed. I was also told that he would need another hour or so to work out the "kinks" with the camera and system wiring. Sooo...I wondered around Bestbuy for about two hours before he finally told me he was done. (My receipt shows I checked out at 8:30pm) I went with the technician to a cash registered and was charged for a "advanced indash video" install, "Steering control install" and "rear view camera" installation.  Total was $281.42 out the door. No big deal, as I assumed the work had been performed professionally and CORRECTLY.
After paying the man, we walked back to my vehicle and I got in to back out of the stall. Upon opening my door, the driver side door panel "reflector" fell off unto the ground. (He had removed the door panel to "Check" the speakers and realized he ran out of time and didn't check the acutal speakers he said) So, he put some double sided tape on the reflector since the tabs had broken and placed it back on the panel. When I put it in reverse, the camera did not come on, the tech was like "Oh yea, the wiring is good but the camera is not operating." I told him I'd buy a new one since it had already been 30days since my original purchase and I'd place it in the place of the one he had just installed and just use the plugs that he had ran. (Granted, I was charged $99 for the install and NOT told the camera was inop until I began backing out of the stall)
As I am driving home, I figured out how to pair my phone. Once I did this, I attempted to call my wife. She couldn't hear me, the microphone wasn't working.
So, Thursday, I called the technician at Bestbuy, informed him of the Mic issue, he told me the following Thursday, he'd fix that when installing the front speakers (since I had to order 6x9s).
Well, in the mean time, I recieved both my rear view camera and my new door speakers. I installed the camera like he showed me, plugged it in, NOTHING. Didn't work a bit.
Fast forward to Thursday March 27. We drop the car off with him, very unhappy. I informed him of the microphone, rear view camera, and showed him the new door speakers.  Roughly 5 hours later, we get a call that it's "ready". Upon picked up, we were told that he had actually wired the camera incorrectly, (so I wasted $60 on a new camera for nothing), he never plugged in the microphone (Although I paid $100 for a proffessional install) and he was going to charge us for 1" Speaker Spacers, because, the $150 6x9 speakers he had just told us to buy, were NOT correct for this car. The original 5 1/4" Speakers were CORRECT and he had to add the spacer to "Make it Work". So, another $30 charge for that.
We tested the microphone and camera before leaving, BOTH were working. As we were driving home (over an hour away) we turned the radio up a little, only to realize the front door speakers were NOT working. At this point, we're livid and I decided to go to Cadillac.
$250 later, I was told he wired the stereo speakers and steering control incorrectly.
On the 2nd of April I went to Bestbuy to find a manager. After explaining to him what happened, I was informed that the work was "Technically" performed, therefore I'd only receive a refund on the camera install. $99. I told him I was confused as to how he considers the work "Professionally" installed considering I had to spend $250 else where to get it done correctly, on top of the $30 speaker spacers, $150 speakers I didn't need and $60 dollar camera.
Needless to say, I'd like a Bestbuy representative to better explain this to me. As an Elite Plus member, myself, and my company spend quite a bit with Bestbuy every year. I don't feel we were treated professionally, and more importantly I was misled through out the whole process, which cost us way more than it should have.

    Dear Noles26,
That is certainly a lot of investments you’ve made in time and money in the last couple weeks! I’m sure that I would be just as disappointed in the experience I was given if I were in your shoes. I say with great sincerity that I wish we could go back in time and do it right the first time. We have a lot of pride in our Geek Squad services and our ability to offer car audio solutions is a huge reason to come to Best Buy. However, the experience you had was not a good example of what we are capable of.
When you initially called in to set up your install appointment, they should have checked stock for you before saying it wouldn’t be a problem. Whether or not they had the harness at that time, they should have offered to ring you out for it over the phone or have you order it on your own, to ensure that the harness would be there for you at the time of install because we can’t do unpaid holds. I realize that people sometimes have to rearrange their schedule to get stuff done on their car, and if we screw something up with that appointment, it can have a snowball effect on that customer.
Normally, before you leave the store, the installer should validate with you that everything is working and answer any questions you have about the new setup. Had this been done we might have prevented at least one of your trips. I can understand a rushed feeling to want to get the install done in a timely fashion for a customer whose appointment was already bumped back, but we shouldn’t lose sight of the possible repercussions to rushed work.
I will be reaching out to the leadership, at the Georgetown, TX store, to provide them with your feedback from your multiple visits. I will be sending you a private message to get some more details from your visits and some other details from your purchases. • Cannot hear audio input live on vista laptop

I have just bought a Toshiba Qosimio and have been trying to record tracks from external mixer. I can record okay but cannot hear the imput signal while it is recording. I used to have xp and it there was no problem.
I have checked the device manager and the input card is the same as the output card and the input signal shows on the monitor record level on the bottom of the screen but I cannot get the laptop to play untill it becomes a wav. I am using headphones for recording and the speaker output is disabled when this happens as usual.
Has anyone got a possible solution to this problem?
Please feel free to ask any clarifing questions?
    Regards Sean.

    cheers Steve;
I've only worked with Dulls in the past
even the old p2 inspiron w win2k we used to have
would mute the audio out as soon as the line in was detected
the internal speaker would mute and I couldn't monitor unless I plugged in a headset
(that ancient thing only had an 8-bit card too)
and the most recent machine is a Dull Latitude D620 XP machine and everything is muted
yeah Vi$ta is an audio nightmare right from the getgo
but in their quest for DRM dominance they wiped the old HAL audio stack and replaced it the current junk
I think best bet is to find out if the internal card with (*retail version drivers) would support it
check the sound device mfg. web site for drivers and the Q&A if they have it.
if not then it's really a choice of USB audio interface or PCMCIA card (if there's a slot)
*(by retail version drivers I mean drivers that haven't been buggered by the PC company)
I've noticed this a lot with the Dull drivers versus the mfg drivers
ie. Sound Blaster drivers from Dull have less features and functionality than if I were to DL the Drivers from the Creative site

what happened to the word "with"
supposed to say ...replaced it with the current junk"
"with" disappeared and I know I typed it.
anyway yes do check for hidden / disabled devices as Steve mentioned

  • Re-Conforming and Audio Bug nightmares

    Hi,
First, let me say that I've searched throughly about those problems before I came in here.
I own a company and we used to use FCP7 to edit our weekly show.
I've moved all suites to Premiere CC 7.2.1
Our workflow is a bit different than before, since PP can handle original files, in our case .mts sony AVCHD FullHD from FS700, NX70 a Handycam and the MP4 from GoPro Hero3.
Our main problems right now have been:
    Re-Conforming:
I've searched about this and these are the possibles solutions
    - Turn the creation of XMP off
    - Disable XMP metadata linking
    - Direct the cache and database files to the same external harddisk that our media is in
    - Direct the scratch disk to the same Harddisk as the media.
    - Media been on a Network volume and Computer clock / daylight saving time shifting.
    - Before opening a project in a different machine, make sure to redirect (to find) the cache to the disk your using
I must say everything above was tested and dealt with but still. We have seen projects re-conforming by it self everytime we open PP. It normaly happens when moving from computer to another one. But sometimes happens on the same machine, between two days apart, with nothing different.
And the re-conforming takes a lot of time.
    Audio Bugs:
Sometimes the waveform doesn't show up. Now this has a workaround, just go to clip > audio options > re-render audio. But it's annoying.
And more serious sometimes we got an audio looping 1sec over and over, even though the original is perfect, trying to re-render doesn't help. re-importing the clip doesn't help. Only deleting ALL the preview files (because you can't know which is which) that works.
Is there anyone with solutions (definitive) for these problems?
    Regards

    Hi Jim,
As I said, I'm using external USB 3.0 drives. No Network drives whatsoever.
    All these:
    System
    Projects
    Cache/Scratch
    Media
    Exports
Are in the USB 3.0 Harddisk.
If you are refering to the same drive as the OS that's not a solution as in some machines I have 160GB SSD.
    Cheers,

  • Audio conforming nightmare - Premiere 2014 - Mac OS 10.9.5 - AVCHD

We shoot a lot of AVCHD and I've often had audio conforming problems but I think it is actually worse in the latest version.
I did a four camera shoot of a guest lecturer yesterday.  I archived all four cards (entire cord structure) and then wisely put them onto our pristine backup because I know Premiere 'touches' source folders.  Then I brought them into Premiere and waited for the clips to conform.  After they did **none** of them had any audio (even though the original files were fine).  I couldn't find any evidence of conforming files in the STREAM.  Where is that information stored?
I decided the easiest thing to do was just to trash the project and start again.  This time I imported each card individually, waited for it to conform and checked that the audio was there before I brought in the next card.  The first three went in fine; the last one did not.  The audio conformed but it sounded garbled, like it decompressed wrong.  Also, it stopped about halfway through even though the audio on the card was fine.
Finally, I connected to our pristine archive to retrieve the original, untouched files.  That's when I noticed that the files in the local, Working Scratch, folder were about 2 gig bigger than the original files in the Pristine Archive for the cameras that *had* conformed properly.  Clearly Adobe is storing something in there somewhere but Apple, in their infinite wisdom, has determined that I don't need to know what is it or where it's been put!  Help!  If I could find the files I could trash them locally and re-conform.  Thank goodness for the Pristine Archive and I *always* put stuff there before I start to edit but... um... other folks don't.
Where does Adobe store the 2 gig of conforming info and why won't Apple let me see it?

  • Nightmare with repaired AUDIO slipping out of sync ???

I have a concert shot on Sony camcorders 48Khz, and audio recorded to LOGIC PRO 44.1 Khz
    My workflow is roughly this:
    1. Log and Transfer footage into FCP.
    2. Arrange the clips into a rough edit on the timeline.
    3. Export the camera audio from FCP, as it is on the timeline. ( to 44.1 AIFF file)
    4. Sync up the good audio in LOGIC PRO to the camera audio track.
    5. Bounce the good audio in LOGIC PRO ( to Both 44.1 and 48 AIFF files).
    6. Reimport the good audio track into Final Cut Pro, to replace the camera audio.
Logic is working in 44.1 as that what the multi-tracks were recorded in...
I tried importing the 44.1 and the 48 and both do the same
Theoretically, this should sync everything, lThe problem is the "good" audio from the Logic slowly slips out of sync with the camera audio.
BUT !!!!!....The WAVE FORMS SHOW THEN IN SYNC ????????
It just plays back a little faster....??? and goes out of sync
Another clue is that when I export the audio from the rough edit in the timeline (step 3), I can reimport the file that FCP produces and, when I put it on the timeline, it exhibits the same behavior: The exported audio track from FCP slowly slips out of sync with the EXACT SAME audio track on that's already on the timeline. How could it be slipping out of sync with itself after an export?
    What a pain ??????

the Wave form is looking correct and all in sync
So, (to confirm) the audio waveform is syncing with the video?...very strange situation with the playback/sync.
Have you tried running Disk Utility/Repair Disk and/or trashing prefs? (I realize trashing preferences is a bit of a pain, but it does resolve many issues).
How full are the harddrives? What drive(s) is your media on and how are the drives connected?
    K

  • Nightmare recording audio into premiere pro with Mbox 2 Mini  Mac OSX

I've adjusted buffer settings, power settings, and so on, not to mention watched two Premiere Pro tutorials on recording audio directly into Premiere that barely still apply, but adobe finds relevant enough to suggest.  I am using a Digidesign Mbox 2 Mini and an ElectroVoice RE20 Microphone.  If I'm lucky I get a clean track of audio for about 45 seconds before the audio begins to pop and crack.  In reading on Avid's forums this is due to a buffer issue, but I've since changed my buffer to every setting and still keep wasting time.  Does anyone have any experience recording directly into premiere pro cc 2014?, Anyone with an Mbox 2 Mini?, Do you have an audio box that seems to work perfectly with CC 2014?  If you have any insight on any of those questions, please comment below.
I've tried everything I could find and read about online, but at this point I have to give up before I waste anymore time.  I've switched usb ports, maybe is a USB 3.0 with 2.0 device?, I switched power locations, plugs, protectors, and so on, even USB cables.... blahhh
    Specs:
    Premiere Pro CC 2014 8.1
2012 Macbook Pro (Non-Retina), 16GB of Ram, dual internal SSD, 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7
    OSX 10.8.5
Mbox 2 Mini, Firmware 1.4, latest drivers.

    Hi AbzZilla,
I was looking up this post and found you've a similar problem...
I was having the non-responsiveness with the above configurations in 'LE 7.4 & 7.4.2c (Mac-only), but I have now installed Pro Tools LE 8.
Unfortunately I still can't get the MBOX2 to work with the Mac mini 2, but the MBOX2 USB status alights now [i.e. it's very bright and now works] on the MBP 17" ...all with Mac OS X 10.5.6! In all previous Pro Tools versions it confirms support for Pro Tools and the MBox, with the Mac mini:
    http://archive.digidesign.com/compato/osx/os.cfm
So I too am 'stumped' as this is the brand new computer that I wanted the software to be operable on. I've swapped the USB cables (to check if it was a failed cable) and it looks like either a firmware clash or a USB-port power issue? I've also tried non-powered USB hubs... as it could be the later issue? So when I find my powered USB hub I'll let you know, ...if there's a change?
Until then... I Iook forward to further posts in this thread!
    Thanks for kicking-off the discussion.
    'Regards, ;-R

  • Audio edit nightmare

Hi.  I am posting again just to make sure I am not going insane.
I have been editing audio and now have a situation where I get really strange behavior-
I use the scissors tool and suddenly regions move.  There is also sometimes audio playing where the waveform doesn't show audio--
?   I have restarted and checked tutorials.  I don't get it.  Is this bug city?  or am I missing something.
    Thank you thank you--

    Sam,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
I have struggled with the 'lock audio' command as well. Eventually I realized that if I only had a yellow pushpin on the video track that the audio was not locked; if there were pushpins on the video and audio tracks then the audio was properly locked. You can read the thread and see my screenshot about that issue here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7699771. Note that the 'lock audio' command tends to work better if you do not apply it at the beginning of a clip.
Regarding the way that transitions change the timing of the movie: your observation is correct. Most transitions do reduce the total playing time of your movie. Imagine that your title clip is one piece of a filmstrip (colored blue), and the clip following your title is on another piece of filmstrip (colored yellow). What the dissolve transition does is to overlay the 2 pieces of filmstrip (which would create a green area. The duration of the transition determines the length of this green area). Now the overall length of the 2 strips has been reduced by the overlapped (green) area.
There is one transition that will NOT reduce the playing time of your movie - Overlap. It looks a lot like the cross dissolve, except that it freezes the last frame of the first clip as the second clip fades in. I use the Overlap transition to keep the audio in sync with the video.
The workaround Rich posted is the easiest way to deal with this, but I have had success with the lock after much effort.
    Regards.

  • Audio Sync Nightmare

I've successfully imported 30 minutes of video and a corresponding audio track that was recorded with the video but using a secondary recording. I want to sync the two of them together (easy enough) and add a title and transition at the beginning, and a transition and credits at the end.
For whatever reason, I can't do it. I thought using 'lock audio to playhead' would keep the audio and video in sync, but all it does is prevent the audio from moving from it's locked position. Is there anyway to lock the video and audio together after I sync them?
Unable to get the sync to work, I figured I'd just throw in a title and transition before the video, then adjust their lengths to sync the video and audio. That doesn't work either because the transitions keep smashing the titles. For example: I set up a title with a 4 second duration, with a dissolve transition of 4 seconds following it. For whatever reason, when I do that, the transition mashes itself into the title, making their combined running time around 6 seconds long.
Any tips on what I'm doing wrong here? It's driving me nuts because I can't set the length of the title and transition independent of one another, and I can't lock the audio and video together.
Any help is greatly appreciated - this is driving me batty.

  • PPro CC 2014 - Audio is a nightmare with plugin handling

Whilst PPro CC handles 34rd party VST plugins perfectly & as far as I can tell flawlessly in both VST2 and VST3 formats the same simply cannot be said for CC 2014.
We seem to have gone backwards with this release, as once again I seem to be stuck in a situation where once some arbitrary limitation has been reached it all goes pear shaped on me - again.
We will begin with VST2 plugins, the first ones scanned.
This gets halfway down my UAD Powered Plugins, to the Neve 31102 Console EQ (in alphabetical order) and no more are recognized whatsoever (needless to say they are all available in PPro CC).
I would guess that perhaps 2/3 of my VST2 plugins are simply not even scanned.
Same problem arises with VST3 - so many are simply missing or not scanned.
I have filed this as a bug report but it just gets marked as closed each time I try.

Thanks for the quick response, Mr. Haugen. So I tried that. It kind of works, and it'll have to do for now just so I can finish up.
Opening up a previous auto-save actually does the same as the main project file I'd been working with. But like I mentioned, if I open a working project file first and then this one, it does allow me to play back. The auto saved one at least let's me make edits and export without freezing. But I still can't switch over to another timeline, otherwise it freezes again. So, problem not really solved, but I'll kind of walk on eggshells as I work just to complete the edit, and then hopefully never have to come back to this project file again if I can't figure out the issue completely.
I'm still open to more suggestions if anyone has them!

  • Bootcamp 3.1 and imac windows 7 64bit update not installing. Audio issues!

After many days of work getting the windows 7 working in bootcamp in my imac 27 (still with audio issues) I eagerly awaited the bootcamp update and imac updates.
    Neither will install.
Then I find that according to tech support as of now I have to reinstall Windows 7 again for the updates to work!
It took me 5 full 8 hours days to get all my scientific programs installed and working, now I find I can't even simply update the drivers I need. I don't want to reinstall.
    My only issues are audio.
    Here they are:
    1) The headset jack works fine on the Mac side, but in Windows 7, it causes the i7 intel CPU to go crazy. There is no CPU spike on the mac side.
    2) The headset jack in the imac is a trrs jack. The same as in the iphone, a tri-band jack that has three bands, two audio out channels and one mic in channel. A trrs headset works fine on the mac side with using the headset mic (as in iphone) rather than the built in mic. (this provides much better quality for sound recording). I don't want to use a usb mike.
In Windows 7 the mic part of the trrs headset does not work.
    3) In Windows 7 when going into audio devices recording, no audio mixer shows up, so when I do video or audio screen capture the only way to capture the sound is through the speakers and then back through the imac built in mic, rather than directly through the unit. (terrible sound quality) On the mac side the mixer element works fine.
Now I find from other imac users that even the new updates for the imac on windows 7 don't address and fix the audio issues. I am sure not going to go through 5 more days work only to find the audio issues still don't work.
I need these audio aspects to work properly though!
I have tried to get drivers for the cirrus logic audio card, but guess what there are none available and cirrus logic doesn't even recognize the board or offer drivers.
I have many windows programs I must have for my scientific research!I bought the top of the line Imac with all the bells and whistles because Apple promised that the machine could run Windows 7 in bootcamp natively!
It doesn't. This has been a nightmare of problems.
Is Apple going to step up to the plate and make good on their promises?
Does any one have a fix for any of the audio issues, or know how to install the new drivers without a complete reinstall of Windows?
Installing a few sound drivers and software should not require a complete reinstall. Getting the proper drivers for the headset jack audio in and audio out jack should be the most basic of fixes. Making the audio mixer work should be elementary.
If you are an Apple tech person or an Apple user that can help on these issues, please do!

PS I will post this under Imac windows 7 updates without a reinstall and under
    imac Sound issues.

On another thread a few people have responded saying that their imac has the same situation, the cpu is going crazy and the imac gets hot with headphones or speakers plugged in. But this doesn't happen in the mac side.
If you have an late 2009 imac and don't have these audio issues, let us hear from you. If you don't, lay out the problem here.
Here is my last two cents in to the inquiry.
Not only does the cpu run crazy but the imac 27 gets very, very hot. Since I unplugged the headphones, it runs much, much cooler.
Certainly, some Mac engineers should take care of this problem, it seems it is universal on all the imac 27's and from what I gather, the smaller screened cousins too.
Also, we certainly want a stereo mix option for audio in or out, or what is called "what you hear" or wave out. Imac is supposed to be much geared to multimedia apps.
Finally, the mic jack part of the trrs set up MUST be fixed! A lot of manufacturers are going to headset combo jacks as they call them, mic in and stereo out on the same tribanded plug. But, the old single jack for mic in and single jack for stereo out are two tiny parts of the hardware and super inexpensive for the manufacturer. Why in the **** to go to the "advanced" triplug if the **** thing doesn't work.
Mac has a great reputation. I hope they remedy these problems right away.
Anyone whose imac 27 or 24 whose headset plug is working correctly. Let us know! I don't think anyone's is, but I think that few people understand that their cpu is running so much faster with the plug in, plus few even understand the combo jack and the triband, or trrs audio jack! Out of 4 audio technicians I talked to, not one of them knew what a trrs jack was or that you even have a mic in jack as part of the headset jack!
When I told one senior that it worked on the Mac side, he didn't believe for a while, thought my sound might be recorded from the onboard mic, but I proved it to him by tapping iaudibly on my iphone mic headset and and it showing up in garage band clearly and listening to big difference in audio.
As for a usb audio adapter, I am in a neon light environment and find that those adapters are more sensitive to electrical interference. Besides I want to use the headset jack as it was meant to be used!
    Thats it.
Again, if anyone using an imac 27 and windows 7 64 or 32 doesnt have these problems, let us know! We are all anxious for a fix!
    Best to all!

After upgrading to Mountain Lion my 2009 (early 2010) iMac mutes audio when awaking or when it goes to sleep. Anybody else having the problem? My other iMacs are not having that problem. I'm not sure if I am missing an option somewhere or what is going on.

  • How to I have one iTunes library that enables me to keep my music on my laptop, and my podcasts and audio books on a separately mapped hard drive?

I'd like to enjoy ONE iTunes library on my laptop, which isn't big enough to store all my content, so I'd like my single iTunes library to have a LOCAL drive portion for my music, and then - when I'm at home, have my iTunes library be able to ALSO include a large library of podcasts & audio books.
I currently have TWO iTunes libraries - a big one on a big drive at home, and a not-so-big on on my laptop.   This is, of course, a nightmare, because I have to resynch my iPod to use one or the other.
Ideally, I'd like to transfer content from my home PC iTunes OR my laptop iTunes - to my iPod and iPhone.     But I can only use one or the other library.     So, I guess the next best thing is - how to do this? - have an iTunes library on my laptop and then, when I have access to my home network, be able to see additional iTunes content - books and podcasts.    I need this in order to transfer books etc. to my iPod/iPhone, as well as music.
Any suggestions?      In this regard - Windows is way the heck easier to manage than iTunes.
    thanks
    Jim

Use your computer's backup to transfer your iTunes library from your old computer to your new computer per the instructions included with this link, or do the same with both computers networked in some fashion, which shouldn't be hard to do if both computers are connected to the same wireless network.

  • 48-Hr. Film Project Nightmare

Well, it's been quite a weekend for this editor. I was a participant in the 48-Hour Film Project - and everything was going okay until about 4pm yesterday, three and 1/2 hours before we were to deliver our finished film. At that point things went terribly, horribly wrong. I was trying to export an HD sequence to an SD-format Quicktime. I had done this before in tests and I knew it could be done, and knew how I wanted to do it. But when it came time, that's when the trouble started.
Every time I would try to export, I would get the most useless message I think anyone could get - "General Error". What??? And this happened EVERY time, no matter what format settings I tried to export with, no matter what I did. I closed out, trashed prefs, rebooted, ran disk utility to repair permissions - all with no success. We had a good entry, and the pressure was starting to rise. We could not get this $%^&^%$& sequence out of the box. Period.
We never did manage to get a file. With 1//2 hour left we went into a dark bathroom with an SD camera and pointed it at our Apple Cinema screen, running audio from laptop to camera and shot the screen. Desperation and ingenuity at it's best/worst. Shooting the screen ended up working okay, although there were exposure issues that we didn't have time to deal with. We DID manage to get our entry in, 4 minutes before the deadline - although nobody was happy with the outcome and what had happened.
The worst part about all of this is that when I returned home after going through all of this and turning in our entry, I started to look into what happened and immediately was able to export with no issues. I just wanted to cry uncontrollably at that point, and laugh hysterically at the same time. There are not words to express. After poking around some more the error did show up again using one of the sequence timelines I had created, but not anything like getting that "General Error" literally almost 100 times in the course of those two - three hours yesterday when I was trying anything/everything I know to get it to export just ONCE. I had the settings, I knew the drill - I had even practiced doing this before this weekend with the camera we used and did tests - all that went out the window when the export issue started.
All I could think about was how I was glad this wasn't a "paying client" but in reality, all the people who donated their time to our project were the client. At least we delivered something, but it was only a sad facsimile for the great looking and sounding short film we created. Everything I had done to try to avoid this nightmare was to no avail, and all I can figure is that in the process of editing, one timeline got corrupted and managed to keep any timelines from exporting, or something was corrupted on my video drive that reset powered off and then back on when I packed up my gear and went home. I don't believe I cut/reset power to the drive when all of the problems were happening, so maybe that had something to do with it.
Anyway, thought you might be interested in hearing about this - makes you appreciate not being me yesterday.

Contrary to the information above, your workflow was far from "unnecessarily risky...". Back in 2007 when the HVX200 was all the rage I helped more than one team in the 48-Hr Film competitions that Panasonic sponsored, they used a nearly identical workflow to yours without a hitch. There are some not-so-obvious benefits to shooting in HD and then making a downconversion to SD that many even today just don't understand.
The "general error" bug has haunted many a FCP editor - myself included - and unfortunately Apple has never been forthcoming in exactly all the things that could cause this error code. In fact, I had an Apple Pro-Care Tech support tech tell me that the reason it's called a "general error" is because the application itself is unable to determine the source of the problem. It happens.
As you've probably learned from this exercise you should be prepared to do some heavy-duty troubleshooting when things go awry; you've covered a few things in your list of attempts to fix the problem and here's a short list of other things you can check in the future:
    - Connections to external drives, both in hardware (cables, power-supplies etc) and in software (making sure assets/preferences in FCP can still find those drives and are pointing to them).
    - Get a copy of DiskWarrior and make it part of your regular maintenance routine.
    - Speaking of maintenance, download Onyx (free app); use it's maintenance and cleaning routines regularly.
    - Don't forget the obvious; I did see in your original post that you did all the initial troubleshooting (reboot, trash prefs etc) but don't forget things like basic hardware needs: Check internal power-supplies, make sure RAM is fully connected, listen for drive noises (like heads banging themselves silly).
Don't take this error bug as an issue with your workflow; HD to down-converted SD is not only safe but a preferential method for making superior-looking SD content whether for broadcast or DVD.
