Audio Processing Final Mix? - Advice

When creating a master program, I compress/limit my audio to appropriate levels.  My program has a number of clips, some voice overs, music, etc,.  In order to process the entire mix, I am creating a compound clip, then adding my audio processing to that.  While this seems to work, it means that every program ends up being inside a compound clip.
Is there a better way?
thanks,
Geoff

Thanks Luis, though I'm not sure that applying individual effects to audio clips achieves the same result as processing the overall signal.  e.g. a compressor on the overall output will cause music to sit nicely under the main voice over, whereas a compressor effect on both the voice-over and the music may cause the music to pump a little more against the voice-over, obviously depending on settings.  One overall effect would seem to do the job far more efficiently, and require less plugins.
However, having to create the component is a disadvantage... just wondering if there was another way to treat the overall signal than creating the component clip.
thanks,
Geoff

  • Mixing 5.1 audio in final cut pro

    Hello,
Looking for good sources on mixing 5.1 audio in final cut pro.
    Thanks,
    joe

You don't. You use Soundtrack Pro for this.  FCP is a picture editor...not sound editor.  You need to use a sound editor to mix 5.1 audio.
Look in the manual...best place to start.

  • (Speaking of) Waves audio production plug-ins; Getting a punchier final mix

I was looking to get a punchier sound from my final mixes and I was referred to Waves by both the Sam Ash Guy and the Guitar Center Guy for my making-it-sound-punchier needs. Does anyone have any experience with some other (3rd-party) sonic maximizers or compression plug-ins?
The reason why I bring this up is because I was casually listening to my iTunes collection and whenever one of my own tracks played via the shuffle mode, the sound was less punchier, had less presence than even simple acoustic-guitar music! I believe I'm doing a decent mixing job and manage to get my peak levels pretty high with some tasteful limiting, but, man, my tracks don't quite have that punch. What gives?

Not exactly sure what you mean by punchier, but here's a great way to get "punchier" drums in GB....and you don't have to spend any more money then you already have.
First, you'll need a few of things, all FREE!!:
Download the W1 Limiter. It's based on the Waves ultra-something-or-other-limiter. It's fantastic.
    http://yohng.com/w1limit.html
Download CamelCrusher. It's a nice distortion/compression plug in that gives it a nice analog "warmth" when used correctly.
    http://www.camelaudio.com/camelcrusher.php
And finally, download Channel. It acts as an analog channel strip would, introducing just a tiny hint of analog style distortion. May sound like a bad thing, but give it a try, it can work wonders!
    http://www.airwindows.com/f/Channel.dmg
Now that you have those 3 plugs, here's what I suggest:
First, get the drum track the way you want it to be rhythmically.
Then solo that track and put the CamelCrusher in one plug in slot and select either one of these presets, Tube Warmth, or Subtle Master. Of course feel free to tweak to taste and experiment with other presets.
Then I'd put on the Channel plug in and set the slider to taste.
Then on the Master track, I'd put the W1 Limiter and crush the drums a shade.
Then share your "drums only song" with iTunes and drag it back into GB. This will give you a huge sounding "squashed" drum kit sound.
Now that you imported the audio file of the "squashed drums", you can remove all the plug ins from the drum channel and the master channel. What you'll want to do at this point is blend the normal drums with the "squashed drums" until it sounds huge. This is called the New York Compression trick.
The nice thing about this trick is that you don't have to use these plug ins I pointed you to. You can use the Apple AU plug ins, you can go buy other 3rd party plug ins, or you can go hunt for me free plug ins. Each one will have a different and unique sound. So you'll definitely want to experiment with those as well. I even like to put two compressors on the track and one compressor on the master sometimes. Really kills the dynamics, but when blended with the unaffected drums, it makes it VERY punchy.
    Hope that helps.

  • Distributed Audio Processing Question

This is probably a dumb question, but would there be any value in using a Mac Mini (or multiple Mini's using a switch) for Distributed Audio Processing? I tend to favor complex reverbs across my mixes and will be using some software instruments and would like to reduce/prevent the processor hit as I'm on a 2.4GHz iMac. I'm running 4 gigs of RAM so memory shouldn't be an issue.
Yeah, I'm a Logic noob, so please be kind if this is a moronic idea :-p

    Hi.
Interessting Question. The macmini must have an intel core cpu and gigabit ethernet. The older models don't fit the specs for Logics QNode wich is needed, to let the iMac do distributed audio processing on the macmini. Additionally you have to connect the two macs with a gigabit network.
    http://www.apple.com/logicstudio/logicpro/specs.html
But i think there are better ways to fit your audio-needs. If you haven't bought the minis yet, buy an MacPro for this work and if this machine even aren't fast enough, then let the iMac do the distributed audio processing.
Additionally power can added to the MP with an Universal Audio DSP-Card.
    http://www.uaudio.com/products/uad-dsp_menu.html
I don't know how your workflow looks like. If you don't need the effects at the same time you record the virtual instruments, then do all the processing after the recording. This way should be the cheapest and best.

  • I'd like to do new final mixes using an external mixer with fx.

    Hello,
I would like to do new final mixes on my tunes from GB. I can't seem to achieve the clarity and equalization in my final mixes like that of a song on the radio. I've been told that my music sounds like it was recorded on my hard drive, which I totally don't understand.
I've been using GB for more than 3 years and I'm learning my way around LE8. I don't understand much at all about bus paths and sends.
Is there an external mixer that doesn't cost thousands that I could get to re-do my final mixes and achieve that radio sound quality?
I use only midi/software instruments aside from voice. Mic-pre-amps, phantom power for my condenser mics and possibly midi i/o would be great features to include in this mixer I so longingly seek.
I hope all of this makes sense. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks guys!

I didn't know that GB had mastering capabilities. When I got the comment that my music sounds like it was "recorded on my hard drive" I thought that was the reason my final mixes have that "cloudy" sound.
Any tips on mastering using GB and LE8?
It's good to know that I don't need to purchase any additional hardware in order to get radio quality sound in my final mixes. I am more than eager to learn how to get a professional finished product.
    much appreciated.

  • How to remove audio keyframes after mix

    Hi,
Early during editing I tried to make an audio mix with the music fader ('write' mode) and now it keeps all the old keyframes whatever I do whilst trying to make a new final mix. How do I get rid of my old mix? I tried to remove the whole music track but Premiere has a good memory ... too good! :-)
Newly imported audio remembers the very first mix.
    Help! (yes, I'm a newby)
    Pieter

    Pieter,
Normally, the Track Keyframes will be overwritten, when you do another session with the Audio Mixer. Not sure why your are not being overwritten, if your Send is set to Write, or Touch. Is that Audio Track Targeted in the Timeline?
In the Timeline, go to the Track Header and toggle to View Track Keyframes. Then in that Track, lasso ALL Keyframes (do not know if Ctrl+A - Select All will function, but try that too), and just hit the Delete key. That should clear all Track Keyframes. Note: I am sure that you realize that these particular Keyframes are attached to the Track and not to the Clips. If this will not work, then just Copy/Move the Clips to another empty Track, and do another Audio Mixer session.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Final mix:  pitch was lowered (!?)

Okay here's the details. Any help is appreciated:
I took SD2 files from a 8 track pro tools recording session. 24bit/48kHz.
I opened them in logic pro 7.2, did the mix, exporting the mix as stereo 24bit/48khz SD2 file. I then opened the mix file in SparkME, cut it to tracks, and exported the tracks as 16bit/48kHz aif files.
Listening to my final mixed tracks, they are down in pitch, perhaps a semi-tone, or 1.5 semitones from the original SD2 files. I'm using Quicktime 7 to listen to the tracks playback. I'm not sure why this happened.
    Thanks for your help!
PS: I can confirm playing back in Logic the pitch is down, so it was down before I bounced. Is there a problem importing SD2 files from pro tools or other apps? Or a setting I may have wrong in Logic? Thanks.
    Dual 2Ghz Powermac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.6) Logic 7.2 Gentoo PPC

Sounds like a sample rate conversion happened somewhere... Seems to me that your system (QT, and perhaps SparkME, which I'm not familiar with) is clocking at 44.1K and trying to play back a 48K file (which would result in the pitch sounding lower).
I've never run into a situation with Logic where the sample rate of files changes unless I've deliberately dome a sample rate conversion, or, exported files at a deliberately different sample rate.
Don't play back your processed/mixed files in QT or anything else. Start from square 1 --- open the original Logic session and listen to your before-you-mixed-the-track files. See if the pitch is correct. Then follow the chain of events until you find the place where the sample rate conversion took place.
    OR...
Change the sample rate of your system to 48 and then playback your mix file in QT.
One way or the other you should be able to find the culprit, but again, unless you deliberately (or accidentally) changed the sample rate of your exported mix, Logic won't change it for you.

  • Mixing advice for distorted guitars

Howdy. I'm a newbie to Logic and mixing in general, although I am reading a pretty good book on the subject. So I know asking about mixing advice is a deep subject, but I'm just looking for pointers a beginner can try.
The only trick I know so far is to roll off the lows on the vocal and guitar tracks to clear up space for the bass and drums. This has worked pretty well for some songs where I was using a clean guitar tone.
Now I've got a song with drums (Apple loops), bass (midi), vocals, and distorted guitars (lead and rhythm). The guitars have frequencies all over the place. Rolling off the low end makes them sound a little weak, and they share freq with the vocals, and the lead and rhythm also step on each other.
So what kinds of things can I try to better define each instrument in the mix?
    Thanks!

Also try the tried and trusted method of cutting one track and boosting another at the same frequency to remove the conflict. Have you tried tracking up the guitars, eq'ing them slightly differently and spreading their panning to strengthen them? You could also double track the vocal line and have the 2nd track sitting just under the first so that it's barely audible but adds some weight.

  • How do I turn off the metronome in my final mix?

I used Garage Band to record a live interview that I want to broadcast on my radio show. Unbeknowst to me, a click track was running during the recording. Now the track has an obnoxious click track running behind the vocal. I have turned off the metronome but it still keeps ticking away. Obviously I do not want this click track running behind the interview on the radio. How do I get the metronome to turn off in my final mix?

If the metronome got recorded on your track from a mic with it coming out of your speakers (the only way it could have been recorded) there's no way to take it out. When you say you turned it off, did you just uncheck it in the control menu? Or did you go to the preferences and change its behavior there? I have mine set for recording only, not on playback. But if you turned it off in the control menu, then it should not be present, unless you inadvertently recorded it from your speakers as I described, and it is not going anywhere. This is one reason it is best to monitor your recording with headphones and not speakers, since anything that comes out of them will be recorded with a live mic close by.

  • Can I mute all audio from Final Cut Pro X?

Can I mute all audio from Final Cut Pro X so that I can listen to music while I do sorting, keywording, favoriting, etc? I'm doing a video where all the camera audio won't be used anyways, so I don't need to hear it in FCPX.. I'd rather just listen to my music instead. Thanks.

For clips in the timeline, andynick's suggestion works fine - temporarily disable the audio roles will play everything without audio and you just have to reenable these roles later.
For clips in the Event Browser, you can also disable and reenable audio for a bunch of clips all at once. Select the all the clips you want, open the inspector, click the audio tab and uncheck the box (for "stereo" or "mono" or whatnot) under "Channel Configuration". Again, to reenable just check this box again.

  • 10.9.2 lost audio and no core audio process present

This is a 2 month old MBP with the 512GB SSD and 16GB of RAM.
I've tried rebooting and reseting the PRAM as well as invoking the command in terminal to kill and start core audio process. Nothing. If I look in the Activity monitor there is no core audio process running. Right now I have no audio.
The problem presented itself after attemtping to plug in a pair of earphones. I've inspected the phone jack and it is clear of dust / debris.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, I found the core audio process - I didn't have "All Processes" selected in the View. I tried killing it but still no luck. I also tried resetting my SMC.

After forgetting the password for my iPhone, I am trying to restore it through iTunes, however, during the process, the phone keeps turning on and asking for the password, thus canceling the process. Any advice?

Yes, you will still get the prompt.
I meant reset then try the recovery mode restore again.
You can also try DFU Mode.
DFU (Device Firmware Update) Mode is different than Recovery Mode.
DFU Mode is a special mode where the device can still interface with iTunes, yet it does not load the iBoot bootloader.
    DFU Mode:
Plug your device into your computer.
    Turn off the device.
Hold the Power button for 3 seconds
Hold the Home button without releasing the Power button for 10 seconds
Release the Power Button but keep holding the Home button
Keep holding the Home button until you are alerted by iTunes saying that it has detected a device in Recovery Mode
NOTE: Make sure the device screen is blank and no logos are present. Be patient, it make take several trys.

Thank you Russ! Seems as though the timestamp on my audio files was completely incorrect so it placed the files far away from the corresponding video. I've modified the timestamp information and this has helped. The hour/minute information is incorrect but at least now I'm in the ballpark. Thank you!
