Authoring documentation (200 - 400 pages)

Hello all,
Just a little background, I am an experience technical writer who has used primarily Word (for shorter documentation) and FrameMaker (for larger documents).
Now, I am in a position to choose a publishing tool.
I currently own:
Word 2013 (happy to continue to use this for shorter quick/dirty documentation)
Creative Cloud
My choices for documentation (for various reasons) are currently [cost is not a number one concern]:
FrameMaker (for familiarity reasons)
MadCap Flare
Sphinx (I was asked to look into this tool but reStructuredtext doesn't appeal to me and even offer the formatting flexibility I require)
Requirements:
Must enable OS agnostic collaboration (usually just markups and commenting)
  NOTE: My current solution is to output as PDF and save to Crocodoc personal (check them out!)
Single source documentation that will output/accommodate (with little or no edits) to the following formats: XML/HTML5 (web publishing), PDF, and potentially CHM help format
Better or similar content control as Word or Framemaker
Must scale well for large documentation
Corporate requirement: must play nice with git (gitorious.org) for source control
Good community support (Adobe products win in this category)
Questions:
Are there any suitable tools, that meet all the above criteria, in the Adobe CC that I could leverage?
If 1) is a negative, how well does FrameMaker compare against MadCap Flare?
Are there any other tools I should consider?

I realize that I am almost talking about two different animals (re: documentation authoring vs help authoring) but it seems to me that some tools have successfully merged these two requirements. I am sure you are aware that it is becoming more common that  technical writers author content for digital media via PDF and web publishing (i.e. HTML or help formats).
From what I see of MadCap Flare, it seems to successfully blend most of my requirements; they certainly make a compelling argument for switching from Adobe FrameMaker (and InDesign) to MadCap Flare. Please don't misunderstand, I have not made a decision yet. In fact, I would LOVE to be convinced that InDesign will do everything I require (or at least all the most important requirements). Ultimately, I wish to ensure that I make an informed decision before I turn away from Adobe products.

Very important... but CHM or other help formats are not as important as:
- Scalability (reliable content design - even with a 400 page count)
- External content links (i.e. images for easy updating)
- Links with relative paths (for portability)
- Very flexible layout design
- Flexible indexing, TOC, Footnotes
- Output PDF, XML, HTML5
- git version control is still a nice to have
I think those are my main requirements.
I would love to see some samples of .indd examples but web searches have only turned up example templates.

I typically create a comment summary, export it to a text editor and find myself having to delete author, date, time, page number, and anything else that is not the raw and net comment. It would save me some good time if someone showed me how to do this. The reason I do not want any additional information is because it simply adds stuff I do not need in my compilation of summaries for large amounts of papers over time.

    What you're describing can't be achieved using the built-in comments summary function of Acrobat, but it can certainly be done if a custom-made script it used to generate the summary because then you're in full control of what's included in it and what's not.

    File -> Export and make your choices in the Export dialogue.
    Jpeg Quality and Size will have most effect on file size. Note that 'Size' refers to the pixel dimensions of the photo.

  • Adding Footer to Large Adobe File (6,400 pages)

    Adobe 9 does not have problesm adding a footer to a large document but Adobe X does.  It just freezes on a 6,400 page document.  Adobe X can do a 3,000 page document.  Any ideas?

    Then why -- when I do EXACTLY the same thing in either X or XI do I get a file that is only a few megabytes and works fine? In DC the same procedure produced a file that was almost a terabyte! Sorry, but something pretty basic has changed between XI and DC. Hope someone can pass this info to those who can do something.

    I have a ECC 5 system running on Windows 2003 Enterprise Server with Oracle as Database.
    I have installed an HP Ultrium Storageworks 460 tape drive on the server. It accepts a 200/400 GB tape cartridge.
    What value should I set for the parameter tape_size in the init<sid>.ora file in F:\oracle\ora92\database folder?
    The present value is default at 1200M
    Is there some formula to calculate this value depending upon the tape cartridge size?

    You can check note  8707  Explanation about init<SID>.sap parameter tape_size
    It is a bit old, but you can figure out the size. For example:
    Tape type                    tape_size (w/o     tape_size (with 
                                 hardw. compr.)     hardw. compr.)  
    DLT 4000    20/40 GB     :    19000M             18000M  
    Probably you can multiply it by 10 as you have a 200/400

    The majority of the 200-300 pages will be single image (think ad) pngs or jpgs - easy enough to move.  Some will feature the included Muse
    interactivity - linkage about as expexted for a site like this. Many of the pages will be updated often (monthly). My concern is more about the ability of
    Muse to navigate quickly and smoothly. Any thoughts?

    I experienced consistently awful ping times (200-400 ms) dragging performance to a crawl. I tested repeatedly at 2-3 minute intervals for 30 minutes. I also flushed the cache, but that made no difference.
    At the same time, I ran Safari and was getting normal ping times of 40 or so ms.
    Is FF 3.6.16 just too bloated to run well on a G4 machine (1.6 Ghz, 1.5 GB SDRAM)?
    If so, how do I UNDO the installation and revert to an earlier, better functioning version?

  • Author starts up with 400% page scale.

    After a crash of iBooks Author, it now opens up in magnified 400% view. ??
    No matter what I set the Preferences to, everything is huge.
    Jump to a new section and it's big again.
    Save it at the right size, and the next open has it back big.
    Is there anything short of a complete re-install that can fix this? I don't want to lose custom styles, etc.

    Thanks for the attempt, but throwing out iBooksAuthor and reloading it afresh did nothing to resolve the issue.
    It still starts up at 400% and as I move from one chapter to the next, the new one shows up at 400%.
    Somehow the data of how to scale the page on the computer monitor is imbedded in the actual book file and it ignores setting Preferences to a smaller scale.

  • On Firefox 3.6.x on Mac and Windows, Google Analytics tracking code leads to an Error 400 page

    Our business sent out an email campaign that has several links containing Google Analytics tracking code in the URL.
    In the tracking code, which is automatically generated via the email campaign software, is an em-dash. The URLs works in every browser (Google Chrome, Safari, Windows) and in older versions of FireFox. They do not work in 3.6.x versions of FireFox in both Mac and Windows.
    As a result, when customers click on a link in the email, they get a page that says "HTTP Error 400 - request is badly formed" because FireFox interprets the em-dash as garbage.
    Once this error occurs none of the pages in the site can be accessed unless a specific cookie is removed.
    Seeing how many people do not know how to clear cookies - it is especially cryptic in the Windows version of FF 3.6.10 - what are the chances that there will be a release of Firefox to remedy this problem? And is there anything else that could be done?

    Weird. We are having this same problem as well. Ours happens in Chrome as well. What I have figured out is -at least for us - is its somethign to do with the Google Analytics tracking cookie on our site. If I go to cookies and then delete the _umtz cookie, the site will load fine. In the time being I have set "pageTracker._setCampaignTrack(false); " in our tracking code to keep the script from dropping the cookie in users browsers.

  • Word 2013 and documents with more than 400 pages

    Hi,
    we have the Problem that Word 2013 need terrible long to load or save documents with a large number of pages (>400). Ther are no Images or Links inside the document nor are there references to any templates. The File size is not so large, its about 2.5-3MB.
    The User says that this was faster with Office 2010. I could not beleave this, cause on a test mashine with Word 2010 it wasn't faster. 
    Now my question. Are ther any Options, registry keys ore something else, we can use to speed up this behaviour? Someone has an idea on how to solve this issue? This user is killing my nerves, every 10mins he gives me a call or write an email to me, why its
    not working and why we can not solve the problem. ;-)

    If, in your testing you've confirmed the document is, in fact, no faster to load or save, then that's what matters insofar as Word is concerned. Without knowing what else might have changed, it's impossible to give a definitive answer. Possibilities that
    wouldn't show up on a stand-alone PC include documents that are attached to templates whose location no longer exists on the network, or if Windows is using a printer driver that is located on a network print server or the user's workstation has damaged/missing

    All these issues are easily resolved - the template one can even be resolved by the user. To attach a different template:
    1. Open the document
    2.Choose Devloper|Document Template.
    3.If anything other than 'Normal' is listed, click Attach.
    4.In the Attach Template dialog box, select the template that you want, and then click Open.
    5.In the Templates and Add-ins dialog box, click OK.
    In the meantime, report the user to management for harassment! Pestering about the issue every 10mins is unreasonable.

    Well, this question is concern about something similar asked by romondodavis on 28-mar-2012  (https://discussions.apple.com/message/17981772#17981772) and also answered by K T.
    So my question refers to know if when buying the Templates and Themes for iBooks Author the curl/turn/flip animation is included with them or should I have to buy necessary Pages so I can generate those industry standard e-pubs as K T suggests in order to get the turn page animation enabled by default?

  • Is Amazon an authorized reseller? Partner page doesn't seem to say they are.

    I've read all over the forums that Amazon (not a third party, sold by Amazon) is an authorized reseller of Adobe but when I visit the Partners page, I don't see them listed as an online reseller. Are they or not?

    I remember looking this up ages ago and found Amazon listed amongst the authorized resellers. I don't know why they have been taken off the Partners page, but there is an Adobe KB article on software piracy which describes Amazon as an "accredited" reseller (quoted below).  Maybe there is some legal difference between "accredited" and "authorized"?  In any case, I personally would not hesitate to buy software from Amazon directly ("ships from and sold by Amazon") and I do so frequently.

  • 10G database documentation HTML web pages not searchable by IE

    Within Internet Explorer (IE) 6.0, I can not use the IE find [&lt;CNTRL&gt; F] capabilities on the 10G database HTML documentation on technet. (I am not an IE novice) For instance, say I was interested in the "KEEP INDEX" parameter of the "ALTER TABLE" command.
    I would use the 10G Database HTML documentation for "ALTER TABLE" found at the link,

    Then, since this document is 100's of pages long, I would use IE to search the page for what I was looking for - EDIT -&gt; FIND (on this Page). I would type KEEP INDEX in the search box and bang I should find it on the page.
    Although this works on every other web site (including the 9i documentation), IE returns the error "Error: 49 Permission Denied". How helpful is a help document that does this?
    Please correct this issue!!!!! Please don't ask me to use a PDF either, they are so painfully slow.

    Further to my earlier post, I have just read an entry noting that if you already own a domain name, and ask your hosting service to forward and mask your iWeb '08 created, web.mac.com site to your personal domain, chances are that due to the masking of the site on web.mac.com, Safari browsers interpret the masking as being the end of the site, and as such, just return a blank page?
    This may explain the problem. However, call me old fashioned, and possibly a little naive, but surely this cannot be the problem?? It's OK in Firefox!
