Auto download of podcasts a prescribed time

Is there a way to have windows or itunes (or some other program) automatically download one or more podcasts at a predetermined time? I am on satellite and they penalized me if I down load more than 200MB in a singel day except that they do not include the downloads done between 3 and 6AM.

Here's an article that describes one way to do it (on Windows platforms), if you want to roll up your sleeves.
http://mutable.net/blog/archive/2006/11/30/how-to-schedule-itunes-to-download-po dcasts-on-windows.aspx
It makes use of something called a "COM Automation Interface" that Apple iplemented for the Windows version of iTunes.
In order to run the script, written in a scripting language called Windows PowerShell, you would need to download & install PowerShell from Microsoft. Here's the link for the Windows XP (x86) version:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=79482
I have tested the script and find that it generally works. However, the folder that it's testing (where podcasts are stored temporarily, during the download process) never seems to get "cleaned up" by iTunes after the podcasts have finished downloading / crapped out with an error. The script still works though, and it will time out / shutdown iTuens after 1 hour (rather than immediately after all the podcast downloading activity has ended).
Folder: My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\Downloads\Podcasts
It would be much better if Apple programmers would just implement this directly in iTunes.

  • Can only download one podcast at a time without itunes freezing...

Having never had any major problems with itunes before, it has suddenly started freezing when I set any podcasts downloading.
If I set one podcast downloading, it will continue to work as normal (although navigating the menus on the left hand side will be considerably slower - an aspect of itunes that I have had to get used to as it seems to slow everything down), but as soon as I click a second to begin it will immediately stop responding. The downloads will continue, although I cannot view their progression or move to the video, music, radio etc menus. Once the downloads have finished itunes will unfreeze and continue as normal. It does not crash or require Ctrl-Alt-Del, and whilst this is going on other programs continue as normal.
Anyone else suffered the same, or know how to fix it?

itunes 8.1 freezes if I download even one podcast. Unfreezes when download is done. I can click anywhere on the interface and nothing will happen. It takes about three seconds after I click on the GET button before itunes freezes up. If I restart [open a new itunes without closing the frozen window] the program, I might get one click before it becomes unresponsive again. Can't go back to the previous version because the library file has new code.

  • Downloading Free Podcasts

I'm trying to help out my mom with her computer. I download free podcasts all the time on my computer and was trying to show her what they are all about. But, when I call them up, the "Subscribe" button isn't highlighted and I can't get them. I'm able to purchase songs, but not get free downloads.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

First make sure you're running the latest ver of iTunes:

  • WSUS - Auto Download and Schedule Install

Hey, so I have a couple questions regarding WSUS:
    1. Can computers be set to daily check for updates from an internal WSUS server and download them without installing, and then automatically install those
updates at a different, scheduled time, whether they are connected or not?  (I see the GPO called "Automatic Updates detection frequency"
that I can configured, but it doesn't say whether updates are downloaded during this operation or not)
    2. Can computers be configured so that
they will download updates from an internal WSUS server first and if it's not available, then reach out to Microsoft?

So that would mean the answer to my initial question is No.  I want an option called "Auto download and install at scheduled time".
Let me clarify how this all works.
The Windows Update Agent periodically checks the WSUS server for updates. Updates it finds, it reports state for: Installed, Not Installed, Not Applicable. If a "Not Installed" update is approved and available, the WUA queues the installation files
for download if the Configure Automatic Updates policy is set to AUOption '3' or '4'.
The download occurs via Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) subsequent to the WUA finding the update as available for download.
When the download of the update is completed, the WUA does one of two things:
If the Configure Automatic Updates policy is set to AUOption '4', then the WUA will schedule the update for installation at the scheduled time. This scheduled installation does NOT require access to the WSUS server to be conducted.
If the Configure Automatic Updates policy is not set to AUOption '4', then the update will be retained on the client computer until a user launches the Windows Update applet from Control Panel and initiates the installation.
If the Configure Automatic Updates policy is set to AUOption '2', then the files will not be downloaded, and a logged on user must initiate the download using the Windows Update applet in Control Panel. This setting is typically used for highly mobile
computers that have only sporadic connections to the network servicing the WSUS server.
The downloading of files using BITS can be controlled using the BITS download policies in Group Policy. You can restrict the bandwidth used for downloads (per client) and/or restrict when those downloads are performed. Ergo, if you want downloads to
occur at 8pm each night, simply block the ability to download files prior to 8pm.
Please note, however, that the files MUST be completely downloaded BEFORE a scheduled installation event for the updates to be installed at that event, and the amount of time required to complete those downloads is highly unpredictable and will change from
month to month and client to client.
Finally, there is one last possible methodology, but this one is fraught with much risk. You can configure clients with AUOption '2', so they do not automatically download update files upon discovery. Then configure an Approval Deadline at the time you want
those updates to be installed. In this scenario, and ONLY this scenario, when the client reaches the Approval Deadline, it will automatically download -and- install the updates that have deadlines configured. In addition, this methodology also gives you some
capability to configure the *DAY* that updates are installed, not just the time. However, as several threads in this forum will attest, there are MANY opportunities using deadlines for things to go sideways. Be sure to anticipate ALL POSSIBLE scenarios before
initiating the use of Approval Deadlines, and more importantly! TEST! TEST! TEST! prior to implementing this methodology throughout the entire organization.

  • How to download new podcasts one at a time?

    Hello,
can anyone tell me how to download new podcast episodes one at a time? I have a slow 70k flatrate and iTunes starts all downloads at the same time, so most of them stop because they are too slow. So I have to klick each episode manually. Instead, I would like to leave my PC for one hour, and then all the podcasts should be there.
    Many thanks,
    Danny

  • ITunes is not downloading more than one Podcast at a time.

Since two updates ago, when I select multiple podcasts and update them to download the latest episodes, iTunes will only download one at a time.  It will show multiple in the "Downloads" window, but it will only actually download them one at a time.  The "Allow Simultaneous Downloads" box is checked, and I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes.

    Anomander Rake wrote:
If the box is checked, what happens is it will show 3 podcasts have started (by showing the progress bar), however only the first one actually downloads anything. Once it finishes, the second podcast will start actually downloading (and one new one will show that the download progress bar, tho it remains empty until its the "top" podcast. Like it doesnt do anything until everything above it has already finished.
That sounds like a classic case of the Podcast provider limiting the number of simultaneous downloads to one only. As I asked the original poster; are these Podcasts from the same programme, or even from the same radio station network?
    Anomander Rake wrote:
And thats annoying enough, but sorta often... if the first podcast takes too long the lower podcasts that have shown the progress bar but not actually started downloading yet will time out and not download until I tell it to try again.
Again, classic symptoms of a Podcast provider limiting the number of simultaneous downnloads. Although this isn't proof, that it's the provider, the question needs to be asked.
I find it extrememly unlikely that cmhogan's suggestion would give you any different results, because the request is simply made in a different way, the queue is the same.

    Greetings Heather,
After reading your post, it sounds like you are experiencing an error with the Podcasts app. You may want to consider restarting the device first, and then resetting if that does not work. This article provides detailed instructions for Restarting, and Reseting:
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset
    How to restart
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on the top of your device until the red slider appears. Then drag the slider to turn your device completely off.
After the device turns off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button again until you see the Apple logo.
    How to reset
You should reset your device as a last resort and only if you can't restart it.
To reset, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.

  • Auto download podcasts daily directly to iPod

Just bought a Ford Explorer. It has a pretty cool feature called "SYNC" where I can plug the iPod in directly via USB and use voice acivation to listen to music. Love it.
I have a podcast I listen to daily on the way to work (actually a couple...). The problem is that I have to manually remember to either download the podcast to itunes and transfer it, or download it directly to the iPod. I want to eliminate this manual part.
I want to keep the iPod in my car (in my garage, well in range of my wifi), have it automatically "wake up" each morning at a certain time (say a half hour before I leave), download the latest podcast, and then go back to sleep. Truly automated!
Anyone know if this is possible?

  • Is it possible to auto-download app update in iTunes, like podcasts can do?

Is it possible to auto-download apps in iTunes, like podcasts can do?
I wish I could set app updates, in iTunes, to auto-download every hour when available just like my podcasts do. Am I overlooking some way to do this or is this really a wish-list feature?

It is not possible, I assume due to certain apps charging for updates (as will be the likely case for sat-nav map updates etc). This is why iTunes requests your password for confirmation that you want to install the update, whether it is free or chargeable.
What I would like to see is the option to reject an update! That way, if you don't want to pay to update an app, you can remove the notification spot on your iPhone and in iTunes!

  • Unable to download podcast the second time

Using iTune with my ipod touch, once I started downloading a podcast (whether I finish it or not), if I deleted the podcast afterward or while downloading I am unable to re-download it again.
Is there a way to do that? Thanks!

I'm absolutely baffled as to why it was once available on iTunes, I know this cause I subscribed back in sept, but now it's not.
I've just (gone out of my way and) done a web search for the Glenn Beck Insider Podcast. This took me to the Glenn Beck website, where six of the links from the home page were "page not found!" I have even found a direct link to the site for Podcast, which took a long time, but the page has finally loaded.
It's unclear when, but there has been a change to the way this provider offers the Podcast. It refers to the Podcast as a new feature, available only to Insider Pass Members, and if I launch the iTunes link for the Podcast, it takes me to a login page.
So first of all, the Podcast is only available to signed up members of the Glenn Beck Podcast. So this is not a straight forward Podcast, it has additional steps (and hurdles) to get through before the Podcast can be downloaded. This probably explains why I can't find it in the store.
In the end, I stick by my previous advice - contact the Podcast provider because only they know how their complex system works. Frankly, I'm not even sure of that judging by the number of "page not found" links on their site. What is certain in my mind is, you won't find the solution through Apple.

  • How to have Itunes auto Sync after the podcast auto download? (for iphone 3gs- but I think it can be iphones in general)

I want to have itunes download the podcast first and then sync to my iphone automatically. It is in the reversed order, so I have to manual sync again after the auto downloads. How can I do this? Thank you

Contact the seller because the iPhone seems to be not unlocked. Only
the Carrier to which the iPhone is locked can unlock it. If it is an AT&T
iPhone, return it or sell it because AT&T will not unlock for anyone
    for any reason.

  • I use podcasts all the time but downloaded my first books from the istore this morning. how do I get them to my ipod?

I use podcasts all the time but downloaded my first books from the istore this morning, I can't get them synced onto my ipod. What am I doing wrong?

the audiobooks I purchased show up in itunes under books and under purchased items but i cannot make them sync to my ipod. I followed your directions but it did not help. I have drag and dropped to a playlist which shows up on itunes but not on my ipod even after repeated syncs. when I try to drag and drop to the books or audiobooks in the itunes list it gives me the NO symbol.

  • HT5295 I have all the proper settings to auto download podcasts, but for the past two weeks, I am not getting them automatically according to my subscriptions, rather I have to go and download them manually. Is anyone else having this problem?

I have all the settings done properly for the podcasting app, but I am not getting all my podcast daily, especially the ESPN shows. The date of the shows are the dates in August, but after downloading, they show a date for 01/01/12. Anyone else have this problem?

I also download the podcast that I want and then 5 minutes later it says that this podcast is temporarily unavailable. I "Remove Podcast" and then select "Download Podcast" again and it downloads it. If I play it right away I get to listen to it. If I wait 5 minutes the Faffing thing is gone again.

  • Help! iTunes auto-downloading apps I don't use anymore

I don't want iTunes to re-download Broken Sword and Asphalt 5 for the iPad/iPhone.  My iTunes is sync'd with my Dropbox and it wastes like a GB of space between the two of them.  I have it unchecked in the store section of iTunes to automatically download apps.  But after syncing my iPhone they start to download EVERY TIME.  Drives me nuts.  I've deleted, unchecked the box that says to auto download, etc.  I don't have them on my devices either.  I will never ever play those games again even though I paid for them.  What can I do to have it quit doing that?

try sending an email to the iTS customer service using this form and ask the folks there to remove the item(s) from your download queue.
