Automatically Get Mail On Login?

Is there a way to get Apple Mail to automatically "Get Mail" when you turn on your iMac and Login? Turning my iMac on, from it being off, the first thing I want to know is, have I got any new e-mail. It would be great if the Mail icon on the dock gave you an indication on Login, instead of you having to manually open Mail, and click "Get Mail".

An icon for an application will bounce in the dock when you start the application. When the script has finished the Script Editor icon will disappear from the dock (assuming you don't keep it there permanently) but the Mail icon should remain in the dock with a wee black triangle to show that it is running; click the icon to open the Mail window.
You can't have the icon update itself to show your new mail count unless you have mail running.

  • Userid/Password intermittmently lost when automatically getting mail

The automatic "Get mail" intermittently loses the "remember me" and prompts for the password. What would cause it to lose the remembered password?

I have had this problem occasionally in the past and there are a number of related posts (with suggested solutions) on this forum. What worked for me was to open Keychain Access, select the login keychain, then open the Edit -> Change Settings for Keychain "login" window and either uncheck the "lock after xx minutes" setting or set it to xx minutes where xx is longer than the period you selected for "check for new messages" in Mail preferences. I also use a different password for my keychain (different from my login password so I know this complicates things somewhat).

  • Why does my .mac account automatically "get mail"?

I am migrating my email from Entourage to Mail. I have a .mac account, an account from my ISP, an account from my hosting account, and several emails for a domain of which I am the webmaster and admin.
Problem is, for some strange reason I can force all my other accounts to only get mail when I manually check it. But my .mac account is delivered into my inbox for my .mac account whenever I click on that box in my Inbox list. I can see a little dial icon that tells me that Mail is checking it then my message appears in the list.
I am trying to accomplish many things as I set up my boxes and this is the first step in learning about Mail. Its more of a control issue but it is important to me.

OK. It seems a few things need clarification here.
First of all, both POP and IMAP accounts use SMTP for sending, so there should be no difference in this regard. Also, mail accounts that allow both POP and IMAP access may very well use the same incoming mail server for both, so no surprise there either, except POP and IMAP access use different port numbers (which, in the case of Mail, you can see in Preferences > Accounts > Advanced).
I find it hard to believe that you cannot set up your .Mac account as IMAP in Entourage. In Mail, you can only choose the account type when setting up the account, and can see (but not change) it afterwards in Preferences > Accounts > Account Information > Account Type. If you see “.Mac” there, it means IMAP, the main difference between .Mac and IMAP being that Mail does more things automatically for you if it knows that it’s a .Mac account.
Doesn't look like it is possible.
Well, it’s possible if you set up your .Mac account as POP, if that’s what you want:

  • Imac not automatically getting mail

Occasionally, Mail does not retrieve mail from my Aol account automatically. In these instances, I must shut off mail and open it again to get new messages. pressing the "get new mail" icon does not work in these instances.
I have my preference set to check for new mail every minute. Also, this mail box is condirmed to be online.
    Any thoughts?  Thanks

Thanks for the tought, Barry. I failed to state in my first post that I ran "connection doctor" and the AOL server was connected.
I think I may have figured out the problem (we'll see). This new iMac is for my wife and is her first Mac, we just got it lat Friday. I have Parallels on this machine and consequently can run Windows programs, Internet Explorer, etc. I installed AOL Desktop 9.6 on the windows side to help my wife with the transition to Mac.
I wonder if the AOL Desktop program was interferring with Apple Mail from receiving notification of my wife's new e-mails? It might me of interest that I am receiving notification of new AOL e-mails just fine on my MacBook Pro (no Aol 9.6 Desktop installed) in the same house via the same server mediated by the same Time Capsule WiFi.
So, I completely uninstalled the AOL Desktop 9.6 Windows program in the iMac and am hoping for the best. I will repost either way.

  • I created a second email account with a password but when I try to get mail for it and I put in password it says login failed. Why? and how do I fix it.

I created second email account ([email protected]) with a Password but when I try to get mail and enter password, it says "Sending of Password did not succeed. Mail server mail.comcast.net responded: login failed". What am I doing wrong?

Have you logged on to the webmail account using a browser and enabled either Pop or Imap forwarding for that email address?
Have you created a mail account in Thunderbird that uses the chosen webmail forwarding option?
Password - make sure caps lock is not switched - it must be the same password you use to access the webmail account.

How do I get mail on my iPhone and computer to sync automatically, so e.g. messages read on one appear read on both?  I am working in VN and the microsoft access server is in the USA.

If you created as an Exchange account on the iPhone (not IMAP or POP) and you have Push on it should all work smoothly; Reading a message on either client should mark the other read (it does on mine). Try deleting the account from the phone, rebooting the phone (to clear out old settings), then go to Settings/Mail,Contacts,Calendar, add an account and tap Microsoft Exchange and add the account back.
There is a fundamental difference between BB and iPhone that you should be aware of; on the BB you do not sync directly with Exchange; you sync with the RIM server which then syncs with your Exchange server. The iPhone syncs directly with Exchange using Microsoft's ActiveSync protocol. So in some ways they will behave differently. But ActiveSync should manage marking messages as read correctly.

  • Why Does Mail Automatically Get My Mail?

I have set the Check For New Mail option to "Manually", and I have unchecked the "Use IDLE command if server supports it". Yet Mail still automatically pops new messages into my Inbox almost immediately after they are sent. Why doesn't "Manually" mean what it says?
I don't want to automatically get any mail, because then I will stop what I am doing and go read it. And I don't want to shut down Mail, because I use existing messages for reference and To Do tasks. Please help?

Taking the accounts offline would almost work, except I'd like to be able to send stuff and have it go out at once.
Playing with it some more, I'm starting to get some things figured out. I'm using the MailTags plugin. I had it set to save the tags to the server, which was triggering incoming messages to come in whenever I changed a tag. I turned that off (I do kind of need the tags on the server unfortunately), and now that behavior has stopped.
The only other thing left that is triggering it to grab new mail is if I delete a message. Delete a message, new mail comes in. So it seems that any action that moves or changes a message on the server causes Mail to get new messages. Is that a bug, or an IMAP limitation?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Since downloading Yosemite 10.10.2, emails are not automatically downloaded.I have to either click on Get Mail or click in and out of mail inbox.

Since downloading Yosemite 10.10.2, emails are not automatically downloading. I have to either click on Get Mail or click in and out om mailbox.
It's very frustrating as it does not happen on my iPad or Iphone.

    Howdy welcon,
It sounds like your Mail application is not checking for mail automatically anymore after updating to 10.10.2. It seems to me that the setting for this may have reset, or changed at some point thereafter so I would check the preferences for the Mail application:
    General preferences - Mail Help
    Check for new messages
When Mail gets new messages from the mail server. By default, the option is set to Automatically (Mail varies how often it gets messages, based on whether your Mac is plugged into an electrical outlet).
An IMAP account may get messages more frequently if the mail server supports the IDLE command; make sure the option to use it is selected in the account’s Advanced pane in Mail preferences.
If you set the option to Manually, click the Get Mail button in the Mail toolbar to check for messages. (Whenever you click an IMAP or Exchange mailbox, it syncs with the server, and shows new messages.)
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • Getting mail to automatically move messages out of inbox

    Hi,
I'm not that great at keeping my inbox organised and I wondered if there is a way to get Mail to automatically move messages from my inbox to another folder when they are over a certain number of days old? I've tried rules, but learnt that doesn't work because it only applies to incoming messages, a smart mail box but that does move the messages but collects them. I also tried to do an automator workflow but can't find an action to move messages?
I'm not tech-savy enough to start writing scripts and I wondered if anyone knew of a simple solution.
    I'm using mail v4.5 and OSX 10.6.8
    Many thanks
    James

    Hi Uri,
I think it's not possible using standard XI mail adapter (settings do not provide any filtering options), and I'm even not sure POP3 or IMAP allow you to pull specific msgs according to selection criterias (I may be wrong) ... So if one of this protocol allows it, I think you'll have to go for a custom mail adapter that will fulfill your need !
Otherwise (and this is what we've done), you can pull all msgs, route them according to its attributes (sender, subject, recipient) to the corresponding targets and when XI is not able to deal with some msgs, ignore them (in the rcv determination, select the corresponding option so no error is raised when recv det does not succeed) ...

My email does not come in until I click on get mail. I have the check mail set automatically in my preferences under general. What am I doing wrong? Cheers John

    OK Vicky, good clues...
    See if this helps...
Open Keychain Access in Utilities, use Keychain First Aid under the Keychain Menu item, then either check the Password under that item, change it, or delete it and start over. See if there are duplicates, should be one for Incoming & one for Outgoing.
Resetting your keychain in Mac OS X...
If Keychain First Aid finds an issue that it cannot repair, or if you do not know your keychain password, you may need to reset your keychain.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.

  • Automatic Kerberos Tickets at Login

    Hello,
    Environment:
OSX 10.4.6 Functioning Open Directory Server with Kerberos working.
I have 20+ users who were never on Open Directory, just logging in locally and connecting to shares.
Is it possible to have each user automatically get "Kerberos authenticated" upon login?
Also, will each machine have to be touched in order to configure Directory Access? If it can be automated, how would you recommend doing it?
Currently, each user can logon and issue kinit and single sign-on services will start working.
    Thanks!

Does LDAP have to at least be enabled in Directory
Access? If I disable it the "Other" Login option
goes away. Maybe use the "Add DHCP-supplied LDAP
servers..." function. I guess if this is the case,
each machine will need to be manually setup?
Yes, LDAPv3 has to be checked in directory access for LDAP logins to work. Like I said, the default settings will auto-discover any DHCP-supplied LDAP servers, so if the server is set up right, no client config is needed to 'bind' the machine.
    A follow-up question:
    1) Consider my existing (pre-OD) users all have mail
tied to their usernames, is their a "right" way to
reconfigure each username, per machine, so they bind
    at login automatically?
Pre-OD (i.e. NetInfo) users cannot login to the server over LDAP - they can still login via AFP, POP, SMB, etc., but Kerberos will not work. To covert them to LDAP, so you need to re-create the user in the LDAP domain (and again, watch out for conflicting user names: if there is one [which you shouldn't have], the NetInfo user will get authenticated, not the LDAP).

  • How do I stop the message "user name or password for iCloud is incorrect" from popping up 2 times in a row when i try to get mail from other accounts? thank you in advance

How do I stop the message "Cannot get mail. The user name or password for iCloud is incorrect" from popping up 2-4 times consecutively every time I choose MAIL on my iPhone 4,  7.1.1  I have to select "OK" 2-4 times each time before I can read other email accounts.  I used to have an "@me.com" account which I think was automatically changed to an "@icloud.com account."  I opened a new iCloud.com account yesterday because I could not figure out how to get in the old ones.  I want to delete the original @me & original iCloud account.  When I try to delete the account, they tell me my DOB is wrong. I just want those pop ups to stop.  Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi Suzanne,
It sounds like you’re running into a password issue with an older Apple ID that’s setup on your iPhone, which is preventing you from removing an iCloud account from your device. Take a look at the article linked below, it outlines all of the possible ways to change an Apple ID password.
If you forgot your Apple ID password - Apple Support
After you enter your Apple ID, there are three ways you can change your password:
Answer your security questions. Use these steps if you know the answers to your security questions.
Use email authentication. We'll send you an email that you can use to change your password.
Use two-step verification. If you set up two-step verification, you can use it to change your password. You just need your recovery key and a trusted device.
    So long,
    -Jason
