Automatically mount a network drive upon login

Hi All,
Can anyone help!
I want to automatically mount a network drive when a network user logs in.
Client OSX10.4.9
Network drive/share is samba based.
Network user is LDAP based (Novell eDirectory)
I currently have the following working:
An eDirectory (LDAPv3) user logs in & authenticates ok.
Mounting the network drive/share works ok MANUALY, with the following
smb://IPorDNS
user is then prompted for their password (I want this automated @ login preferably)
What I need is some help automating this smb mounting @ login time using the users ldap Username/Password. I guess this would need to be done using an Applescript of sorts, but I'm stuck as to how to take this forward..!
cifs://workgroup;Username:Password@IPorDNS/profile
The above works manually, but how do I go about swapping the Username:Password for environment variables, and then packaging this into a script/application that runs during login..???
TIA
Danny
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Hi Matt,
Yes that would work for a single user that wants the same mount everytime but not for multiple network users, as the path changes for each user...
e.g.
/networkserver/usersarea/user1
/networkserver/usersarea/user2
/networkserver/usersarea/user3
etc
I think I need something like Actioscript apps to run during the login process...
TIA
Danny

  • Automatically mount an ftp drive on the finder at startup?

Is there any way to automatically mount an ftp drive on the finder at startup?  I would like to use this to a centralized and controlled way for company staff to access and download files while outside the company.

thanks for the suggestion.  Not sure what you mean by network volume?
Most of the time I access the ftp using Transmit.  It will mount the disk to the finder, however only for the duration that the computer is running.  Likewise the ftp disk can be dragged to the login items, however will not open or connect following a restart.
I have tried Automator, set up a small app in the startup items, and viola, it works like a charm.  Transmit opens automatically, mounts the ftp disk and then transmit shuts down.  Great.
Now is there any way that this can be set up on a LION server, so that the ftp mounts, and then can be shared for access to clients on the company's local network?  Staff could then upload files that they would like to have available on mobile devices.

  • Do I have to manually mount my network drives?

I've set up a couple of partitions on a USB disk attached to my AEBS. One of the partitions is being used for time machine across a few different machines.
Should I have to manually mount the network drives each time I start my machines? I've see time machine errors involving the backup disk not being found and I'm wondering about the details around the network drives use.
    TIA,
    David

    I didn't
    my clock changed to wintertime

  • Stop automatic mounting of network volume

I have a MacBook that is on a Windows network and connects to a 2003 server. Any time the MacBook is on it tries to auto mount a network volume on the Windows server about every minute or so using an account of an old user. This results in locking the user out of the network about every 5 minutes. I am looking for a way to shut this off.
I have looked in the startup items and can’t find anything. I have also checked in the Login items under the user accounts with no success. Any ideas would be very helpful.

To stop the automatic mounting of a network volume, try looking at Finder, Preferences, Shared, and uncheck the Connected Servers. I don't know if this solves your real problem of (deleted user) drive mapping, but at least it stops trying to mount the volume.

  • Delay the mounting of network drives at startup?

Can i delay the mounting of my network drives (cifs) at the boot up?
I want to do this to be able to start network in the background at the boot up since thats the procedure slowing down the boot up at the moment.
    Thank you in advance.

Ahh ! I wasn't sure which statement you were refuting.
but this confuses me a little. We normally background DAEMONS to increase boot speed (or atleast one of the reasons). So I assume that when you background it, you run it parallely along with moving ahead in your startup process -- namely starting up other daemons and bringing up the login screen/Display Manager or booting straight to X.
    Correct
Inxsible wrote:OTOH, unmarked daemons actually get started before going ahead in the start up process. So wouldn't that mean that they might get started before anything else is processed...?
    Why?
    Here is the code:
    # Start daemons
    for daemon in "${DAEMONS[@]}"; do
    if [ "$daemon" = "${daemon#!}" ]; then
    if [ "$daemon" = "${daemon#@}" ]; then
    start_daemon $daemon
    else
    start_daemon_bkgd ${daemon:1}
    fi
    fi
    done
    if [ -x /etc/rc.local ]; then
    /etc/rc.local
    fi
    Translated into human language:
For every daemon in the DAEMON array do:
If daemon has not the prefix "!" do:
if daemon has not the prefix "@" do: start the daemon --> AND wait for comletion
else do: start the daemon in background --> AND don't wait for completion
    Process rc.local
    Hope thats clear now

  • Mount local network drives to desktop?

  • Network Drive issues - Login fails

    Hello,
I've been struggling with this problem today after installing Leopard. There were no problems under Tiger.
I've got a network drive, and I can see it clearly in the Shared side-menu of a Finder window. The drive isn't set up to let Guests in, so I tried Authenticating myself with the user name and password we've used here at the office the last three years (so, I'm not typing in the wrong password..) and it says it's the wrong username or password.
I tried Command-K connecting, with a long, detailed address (cifs://WORKGROUP;USERNAME@DRIVENAME/SHARENAME) and it connects fine, fast and asks for authentication. But again, the absolutely for certain right password gets rejected.
Pinging the drive in a Terminal also confirms the drive is there, the computer has no problem seeing it.
I'm downloading 10.5.2 as we speak, so I'll see if that solves my problem. But if any of you have experienced this, or have any suggestions, I'd be delighted to hear from you.
Edit: Oh, the hard disk is connected to a Linksys Network Storage Link.
    Cheers,
    Jon

I might as well add that connecting to a Windows machine works fine, so it doesn't seem to be connected to the SMB/Leopard issues I've heard people talk about.

  • Can't mount a network drive at startup - Mac boots too fast?

    Hi all,
On every Mac I've owned for the last few years, I dragged the icon of my file server to my Login Items list and the Mac would flawlessly mount the drive.
Now with my Mac Pro, the machine seems to boot so darn fast that I get an error that the server doesn't exist, but if I immediately manually do a Cmd-K and mount the drive, then it works. I put my old G5 back on the network and it worked, as did my Macbook Pro and my old G4 Cube.
So, although I can't prove it, it seems to me that the Mac is trying to mount the drive before the Mac finds the network. If this is true, how can I solve this problem?
    Mike

    Hi Michael,
I'd try this method instead of dragging to the Login items...

I'd experiment with the Static vs. Dynamic also.

  • How to mount a network drive

I am new to automator and seem to have a problem mounting a drive automatically.
I have tried using “ask for server” but it is not what I want. The drive I want to mount from my net work is 192.168.1.5/public. I can mount it every time manually by going,
finder: go: connect to server: home-network: Nas-lacie: Connect: public
and then putting in my Name and password (or even finder: go: resent folders: public).
but I would like automator to do all this.
    I put in automator 'ask for sever' 'view results' the results are {“afp://192.168.1.5/?NAME=NAS-LACIE”}
    then
    'Connect to servers' 'view results'
    {alias”public”}
I seem so close yet so far can someone help me

  • Automatically mount a partition on Gnome login?

Is that possible?  I know about sessions, but you need to be root to mount a drive and I don't think you can run a command as root via sessions.
    Thanks.

Thanks, but it doesn't compile.  It says it's missing libHX, even though libHX compiled and installed fine.
On an unrelated note, I installed Xgl with pacman -S xgl, but then when I run startxgl, bash complains that it can't find that command.  Xorg is configured fine as far as I can tell and I'm using the proprietary nVidia driver.
e:  How might I configure sudo so that I could mount partitions without a password?

  • Mounting a Lacie Drive on Login for all users?

Here's the situation: I want to make my Mac users single sign-on to my Active Directory server (2003 Server). This part is easy and works great- users get their home directory mounted and of course have to authenticate against the AD server to logon on. What I can't have is them saving their huge multimedia files to our server- it doesn't have the HDD space!
Summary: I want users who authenticate to an AD server to be able to save small files to their home directories but larger files to the Lacie drive attached to a G5 tower. What would be the best way to do this?
    Thanks a million!

    Hi Paul,
I would, as an admin user, create one folder for each of your users on the LaCie drive and make each of them owner of his own folder (I guess this can be obtained from the "Get Info" window or the Unix way).
You still have to check that the FW drive mounts for all user sessions but I don't see why it wouldn't.

  • How do I automatically connect to Wi-Fi upon login?

Each time I login, I have to open terminal emulator and type "wifi-menu" and then choose my connection in order to grant Internet access. Is there a way for me to automatize this?

    Use:
    netctl list
to view the profiles generated by wifi-menu; then use:
    netctl enable <name of profile>
to start it up at boot
    EDIT: sorry @ewaller...

  • Automatically mount drives on network

We are currently set up with an ethernet network, where all 3 computers can log in and see each others files.
However, rather than having to go to network, find the drive I want to mount, and log in each time, is there way to have it so they automatically mount when the drive is accessible?
Our main central computer is always on and accessible, but when you turn off the secondary computer accessing it, you have to log back in again when you start it up.

    Hi
If I've understood you correctly there are a number of ways of doing this.
Connect to Server > IP Address of Server. Provide the user name and password and ask Keychain Manager to remember the details. Now that it's mounted on the desktop select System Preferences from the Apple Menu > Accounts > Admin Account or account you're interested in > Login Items. Add the mounted share into the Window by either dragging it from the Desktop or clicking on the '+' icon.
Provided the server is switched on and accessible to the network and it has the same IP address you used to connect to it initially it should present itself on the desktop when you power on and login with your computer.
If in an OD environment you can map shares to mount at login time using Managed Preferences in WorkGroup Manager.
    Tony.

  • Automatically mounting ext hard disks on an Airport Xtreme wireless network

In a call to Apple Airport support, I was told that every time I brought up my MacBook Pro running 10.5.2, if I wanted my external disk, which is directly attached to my Airport Extreme router through a USB port, to show on my desktop as an icon, I would have to go through the following procedure: Finder > Shared/Apple Airport > external disk name (file folder icon) > close window and the icon will appear on the desk top. When I mentioned to the support specialist that on my PowerBook G4 running 10.4.11, whenever I bring up the system, the external disk icon appears automatically as long as I have enabled "Show Airport Disks in the menu bar" in AirPort Disk Utility. He told me that there is no AirPort Disk Utility in 10.5- the facilities of the disk utility purportedly now are included in the 10.5 Airport Utility (this facility for automatically showing the external disk on the desktop must apparently been left out).
As a user, let me state that from my perspective, 10.5 has a taken a giant step backward in usability! Whereby under 10.4, the user had to do nothing upon bringing up the system, with 10.5 , four separate steps must be taken! Anybody know of a workaround?

I was told that every time I brought up my MacBook Pro running 10.5.2
If by "brought up" you mean to +start up+, and you are describing mounting a network drive attached to your Airport Extreme, I would do the following.
Mount the network drive manually. Open System Preferences Accounts pane. Select your user account and go to the +Login Items+ tab. Click-hold-drag-drop the icon for the network drive (from the Desktop) to the Login Items list. Try restarting (or logging in/out) to see if the network drive mounts automatically.
I don't know about the Airport Disk Utility, but that's how I've been mounting disks over my network (attached to other Macs) for years, using Login Items. I don't have a drive attached to my Airport Extreme, so I can't try it myself.
