Automation changes in Excel2013

Hi, we have an old VB6 application that performs Excel automation and wich always worked fine, whatever the OS (from XP up to W8, 32 or 64 bits) and whatever the Excel version (from 97 up to 2010).
Recently, we have bought Excel 2013 and now, Excel RAM usage grows each time a file is opened/closed.
Just looping on opening/closing an empty worksheet, after one night, Excel RAM usage can grow up to 1 GB...
So, what appened on automation mechanisms between 2013 and 2013 versions.
How could we solve this issue (our software needs to run for more than 1000 hours...)

I've launched the example code from Excel itself (VBA macro in an xlsm workbook), it runs since 2 hours now, 6200 iterations, it takes now approximatively 4 secondes to open/close an empty file and RAM usage is about 280Mb and does not stops growing (whereas
it started around 50Mb and was quite fast) ...
And yes, the customer application has to run 24/7 for a month and even more ... But, it does not opens billions of files, it has a maximum of 3 files opened simultenaously and perdiodicaly generates reports opening a template file (xltx), exporting data
into it and saving it in the right place. And, Excel accesses are not so frequents, the most significant part of applications is about communication with source and measurements devices (We're doing electronic applications, mostly burn-in application which
consist in stress steps followed by characterization steps and then report generation and loop again until the tested component dies).
The open/close example is just the simplest one I've found which produces the issue but it does not have anything to do with the actual applications. (And in our company we use it only to calibrate our devices, which is performed in less than 10 minutes
so we hadn't seen this issue until a customer who makes long-time tests changed his computer and bought Excel2013).
Moreover, in the customer application, it crashes before having generated a single report, so there are other methods than open/close that also causes Excel issues. (I thought that if I could explain the open/close issue, I could explain everything ...)
Restarting Excel periodically is indeed the only work around I can figure but it's a little bit tricky to do because, our application just interprets a script from which the Excel commands are done. Usually we do not create the script neither the excel files,
it's the custommer who creates them. So, it's is hard to develop something "robust" in any case, the safer way would be to create a new mnemonic as "RestartExcel" and explain to the customer that he has to periodically call this method
to purge Excel ... And it's up to him to manage Excel memory leaks ...
It is not "professionnal" ... but maybe it will end like this !
Of course, I don't want Excel to be "stupid-proof", the customer has to test its application and debug it if it causes excel errors ...
Peter thornton, you're so kind to me ! If I could be sure this issue were not caused by the environment and that you also produces it on your W7 - 32bits machine it would be easier then to pick a work around solution. I can't refuse your offer :)

Automator - Change Image Type - Multiple page PDF- TIFF conversion

I was able to do this on a friend's computer (not sure which version of OS X they were running), but this seems impossible on Snow Leopard.
I need to convert hundreds of multiple page PDFs to TIFFs. I can't get this to work, and the Change Image Type option only lists single page PDF conversion. I could separate PDFs into multiple files, convert to TIFFs, but then I don't know how to recombine a bunch of TIFF pages into a larger file. From google searches, I know this is possible using tiffutil, but I don't really understand how to use that well, and I really need an automatic process.
I'm at my wits end with this, because I did it just last week on someone else's computer and it was easy as pie. Why can't you convert multiple page PDFs in Snow Leopard?
Any ideas?

I just tried this - two problems.
It creates a separate tiff document for each page of the input pdf.
Also, this action is just annoying because it results in randomly named files in some temp folder that i can only locate using the reveal finder item action. I know I can rename files in automator, but I'd really like to have the output file have the same name as the input file.
It confuses me why they would remove this functionality in Snow Leopard.

Can Automator change my screen resolution?

I kinda ** with scripts, but I've used Automator for some easy tasks earlier.
I'm not sure if it's even possible to make this but hope somebody around here can help me =)
So i use my iPod Touch a lot to check on my computer using VNC (Screen sharing) and sometimes boot it up with iWol, but to make any use of it i need the screen resolution changed. Doing this takes some time when you do it from the iPod or an iPhone.
*So in my case i need an application i can just have on my desktop, start it and my screen will be resized to 640x480, and the best would be if i hit it again it goes back to my normal size 1920x1200 but not so important. I did not find anyway to do this in Automator, I've tried the record function but it never manages to get it 100% right. Anybody got some ideas how to do this?*

An application that is automatically started on log-on, runs in the background, notice when screen sharing is being used and will pompt and ask for a resolution change.

Automator & Changing iPhoto file names

Is there an automator workflow that allows me to select certain photos within iPhoto, and change their file name? I tried to do it within Automator, but could not figure it out. Any help is appreciated.

Automation changes volume of whole multi instrument.

I have multi instruments set up in Logic and the volumes of the 16 channels work separately in the mixer but when I go to automation it changes the volume of the whole multi instrument. How do I get around this?

You need to select the midi channel of the instrument you want to automate within the multi instrument from the inspector.

Massive (and relative) automation changes

I need to reduce 10% all the volume data in 12 tracks, between 16 measures. I've with automation selection tool. I can SELECT all (volume) automation data from that tracks, but I'm able to MOVE just the last one selected. I needed to change one by one, trying by hand to keep the same relative levels between tracks.
If you select several tracks in mixer, and move any volume slider, all of them start moving accordly. I want that for already existing automation data. Is it possible? Is it possible to "link" tracks that way?
I know I can see isolated automation data on arrange window. I'm going to investigate by there. If I found the way i'll self reply this post

Automator - Changing JPEG Compression has no effect

I have an application using Render PDF Pages as Images, using JPEG compression, but no matter what I change the Compression setting to, the image is always the same size. Bug or something else?

and Oh Surprise! the background music is louder than what it should be. Its clip volume is set to 20% >and the Voiceover track's is set to 200%; as it was before.. but the music is so loud that we can't hear >the Voiceover track anymore.
This could happen if ducking is set on the music track. Ducking defines the music track as 100% and works everything else out from there. Ducking will diminish every other track. If you had ducking set to 25%, and volume of voiceover 200%, the music track would need to be 800% of the voiceover track.
My recommendation, turn ducking totally off. And use it only on short clips or short audio clips. If you have any long clips or music tracks, use the volume slider to set the volume.

AUTOMATION: Changing Swatch Values

Hello forum,
I am wondering if there is a way, in Illustrator CS2, to
automatically change the CMYK values of named (spot color) swatches in the palette of an open AI file (I am running under Windows OS).
I would like to be able to choose from a predefined series of color schemes the color combination desired for the working file and have the CMYK value of the named spot color swatches changed to coincide with the selected combination (as opposed to manually selecting each swatch and entering the CMYK values).
The predefined color schemes file would need to be able to be manually modified as well.
I hope my description makes sense, hehe. Any ideas?

I've done it with AI 10 on Wondows OS. It should be true with CS2.

Logic 9.1.3: automation changes between Macs

Hi all,
I had a quick search on various forums to see if anyone else has experienced this problem but I've drawn a blank so far.
The scenario is I have Logic 9.1.3 on my Mac Pro (early 2009 quad-core) and MacBook Pro (2010 2.66 i7) which are both running OS X 10.6.6. I am working on a dance track which requires automation of various parameters to be tick accurate for builds and drops.
The problem is this: I work on the track on the Mac Pro in the studio, getting the automation timing just right. I then typically spend a couple of days away working on the track on the laptop.
When I play back the track on the laptop the automation timing is messed up - it comes in too late (after the drop, for example). The CPU / disk usage isn't spiking overall or on any given CPU core. The playback buffer settings don't make a difference to this issue but I leave them set to large.
Has anyone else experienced this issue please? It's very frustrating to have to keep nudging multiple automation nodes every time I switch from desktop to laptop!

P.S. As an aside - during playback on either Mac, the position of the playhead when the tune drops does not accurately reflect the level of automation happening in the track - again, anyone else seen / heard this?

On both computers, go to Preferences > Audio > General and set *Sample Accurate Automation* to *Volume, Pan, Sends, Plug-In Parameters*.

Automating Changes to "Inserts" at Bus Level?

This is a very simple question for someone who knows how to do this. I do appreciate your time.
In the middle of a song, I want to turn on an effect in the "Insert" on Bus 1 (by taking it off of "Bypass" by clicking the button "on") and increase the volume at the bus level at the same time to keep the sound level (due to activation of the effect) the same. I know how to automate the increase in the bus volume ("latch", then "read"), but I don't know how to automate turning the effect "on".
How do I automate this action for real-time playback and bouncing?
(These are baby steps for some, but big jumps for this newbie. Thanks!)

Actually, it's really easy. While in automation
write, latch.... just option click the plugin. This
is also visible as an automation parameter.

Logic Pro X moving automation-Bug or not?

Having this issue on my side, perhaps if some of you can confirm if this a bug or is this only happening on my side.
Create a group of chanels. You know that feature where you group name and when you move one they all move.
After that turn on automation for the whole group.
Click to enter automation starting point... you'll notice that the automation gets drawn on all the channels of the entire group.
Now click another point into the automation (once again it will draw to the whole group) BUT now MOVE that second clicked in point a little back (to right of arrange page).... now go look at automation data on other group channels and youll see the automation data is now removed on those channels.
This never happended under LP9.
Is this a bug or has automation changed under LPX?

I can duplicate this, but only if I don't change the value. If I change the value, then all relevent automation points are added back in. It's a little strange, though, because sometimes I can make "one click" accidental moves and it won't reflect in the other tracks. Then when I go to make an intentional move that the other tracks do catch, they start from zero (or wherever it was) while the accidental move track is now a few value points ahead of them.
I might be inclined to look at it as intentional data thinning, except for the exception that can occur.

Track Automation

Is it possible to copy and paste track automation segments? For example, my main bass is 1/2 of a bar in lenght and I automated the whole segment, but when I just try to copy and paste it, it does not take the automation changes with it. Any suggestions?

See your track automation settings - you can get Logic to copy automation when you copy/move segments around.
If you really want to copy/paste automation, you need to work in the track automation folder. Open the automation event editor (there's a key command for this), and with that still open, open a new arrange window - this will display the track automation folder, where you can edit automation to your hearts' content.

Volume changes to maximum on manual track change?

Using iPhone 5s, running iOS 8.1.1, default Music App.
Often when manually skipping to the next track, volume goes instantly to maximum. It is not happening %100 of the time, but it's often enough that I have had to turn down the maximum volume on the Music App settings down very low to avoid my ears getting blasted.
The only thing that has changed is I am playing ALAC files, ripped from original CDs on my desktop computer then sent to the syncing MBP via Home Sharing.
Has anyone else experienced this?

If you have in and out markings on a sequence, you cant enter automation changes elsewhere.

Unresponsive automation

I'm currently experiencing an issue where my modulation automation is often unresponsive. I'm not sure if the problem lies within my keyboard (novation 61SL MkII) or within Logic X itself. While I'm recording midi and moving the mod wheel, the automation does not input very accurately or sensitively. When I go into redraw it about 50% of the time any new automation changes are not recognized and remains unresponsive. The only way to fix it is to delete the region, record it again and hope this time it works! Completely ridiculous and annoying. I'm a film composer working 12 hour days 7 days a week and need my gear working 110% of the time and when something this fundamental goes wrong, it slowly eats away at my time efficiency and interferes with a streamlined, fast writing environment. Any help is much appreciated!

No problems with recording Mod wheel here under LPX using a variety of different midi keyboards and controllers... so I have to assume the issue is with your keyboard in some way....
If you need an urgent workaround you can draw modulation using the step editor and the pencil tool.... which is what I actually find I do most of the time simply because I find I am often playing using both hands.... or use the step editor to tidy up recorded mod wheel data ...
