Autosuggest:  XML and JSON datasets treated differently

Not sure if I found a bug or not, but I found something kinda
odd with Autosuggest and XML data vs. JSON data.
Check this url:
http://www.christopherchin.com/sandbox/testSpry.html
The first input box is XML data the second input is JSON.
When you type Christopher in both fields, you get a list of
people named christopher.
Now type a space and the first letter of the last name of one
of the Chris'.
XML works. JSON doesn't.
Thoughts?
Thanks!
Chris

Look at your JSON output, it has 2 spaces between the first
name and last name for some of your entries, but only in your JSON
output, not your XML output.
If you fix your JSON ouput so it matches the XML output, I'll
bet it works.

In several days (in the 19th) i will lecture at
SQLSaturday #360 and my last demo (hopefully I will have the time) is
Full implementation of JSON, I will show several function using JSON serializer and deserializer, and as mentioned full implementation including fast
indexes on JSON column (finding specific Node in 10 million rows
in less then a second). If you want to wait, then I will publish it latter probably, or you can come the lecture if you want :-)
    * I am using Json.NET framework, by the way.
regarding your question, all you need is to find a nice serializer/deserializer framework (you can use
Json.NET framework) in order to do what you are looking for (if I understand what you asked)

  • NTLM and ADFS claim treated as different user

    Dear All:
Currently our SharePoint is using mix authentication mode (claim mode with two authentcation providers):
    Windows-NTLM & ADFS2.0
The ADFS'a identity store is same as SharePoint's domain, it means we have only a single AD, NTLM authentication provider is used for users who are in office, ADFS authentication provider is used when they are at home. (The same credential)
When users opens SharePoint, it prompts a page to let user to select which authentication provider they want to use (NTLM or ADFS).
The question is when the same user login by using NTLM or ADFS, the user will be treated as a different user
    For example:
UserA login by using NTLM, his identity claim looks like: Domain\UserA
UserA login by using ADFS, his identity claim looks like:  i:05.t|saml provider|[email protected]
The profile and permissions of this user will be different
Is there a way to treat the user as the same user no matter login by ADFS or NTLM ?
I know if we remove the NTLM authentication provider, only use ADFS can solve this problem, but the client don't want to do this, because:
The SharePoint is upgraded from 2007 (Classic mode) and it has a huge number of existing users, resources, permissions.
After upgraded to the claim mode, SharePoint automatically used the NTLM authentication provider.
If we removed the NTLM authentication provider, the client has to reset all permissions in SharePoint again, for example:
    A ListItem's Permission:
    1. In SharePoint 2007 Classic Mode:
    Domain\UserA -- Full Control
    2. After upgraded to SharePoint 2010 and upgraded to Claim Mode, the client didn't need to reset the permission:
    Domain\UserA -- Full Control
    3. If we remove the NTLM authentication provider, the client have to reset the permission:
    i:05.t|saml provider|[email protected] -- Full Control
    Any ideas would help,
    Thanks a lot!

SharePoint sees the Windows and Claims identities as different, even though they are the are the same user in the same directory store.
I'm troubled by the SAML token though, if it was a claims windows token (i:0.w) I would say you could use Move-SPUser to consolidate them. I've done this
before when during configuration of a farm a user can appear with duplicate entries in the site, one for windows auth (DOMAIN\user) and one for claims (i:0.w#domain\user).
Move-SPUser can merge the SPUser objects together (this was one of the purposes of it's predecesor, the migrateuser stsadm operation). If it was a windows token it works, but because of the ADFS provider it could be strange.
Here's how I would test it out:
Create a new test user (no sense in messing up a real user)
Log test user in to the site with NTLM
    Log out test user
Log test user in to the site with ADFS
    Log out test user
With an admin account, verify using the method you previously used to determine duplicates that there are indeed two users for this test account (one windows, one SAML).
    Move-SPUser (details below)
Verify there is now one user for the test user
Log test user on to the site with NTLM
    Log out test user
Log test user on to the site with SAML
    Log out
With an admin account, verify again to make sure there is still only one account
For Move-SPUser and windows claims I would usually recommend merging the windows account into the claims. Without knowing what will happen I'd say let's try the same here (merge the windows account into the SAML claim):
    $testUser = Get-SPUser -Web "http://sitecollection/or/site" -Identity "DOMAIN\testuser"
    Move-SPUser -Identity $testUser -NewAlias "i:05.t|saml provider|[email protected]" -IgnoreSID

  • Using include-xml and different character encodings

I have static XML documents which contain different character encodings in the xml prolog....
    ISO-8859, UTF-8, and SHIFT_JIS.
Each of these documents has entities declared in an internal doctype declaration.
I have an XSQL page with several <xsql:include-xml href="???.xml"/> statements.
I want to make either --
    1) UTF-8 as the ultimate encoding of the resulting XML data
    2) Force the encodings on the individual documents to be changed to UTF-8
I want to get a final XML data steam which can be successfully parsed and transformed. The xsql page has a stylesheet reference.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Can I ask why XML and XSLT aren't suitable for printing / pdf generation?  Using XSL-FO I can define a page size, margin widths, etc., right?  Just because it isn't normally done doesn't immediately make it a bad idea.  I was under the impression that XML was intended to be abstract enough that it could be used for more than just web pages or data transfer.

  • Validation fails when schema and xml doc are located in different folders

xml file and schema are in different folder. Schema uses namespaces. When I try to validate, I get exception:

  • Check Writer XML - Check count different between XML and PDF

Hello all, Check writer XML ends in a warning. Hence the user can't see the output. I go to the server and grab both the .XML and the .PDF files. The PDF file as 93 checks but the actual .XML file has 112 checks. Hence the warning. Did anyone experience the same problem? Any help is highly appreciated.
    Thanks, Naveen G.

    Hi,
We just figured it out. From SYS Admin> Profile> System, we increased the values of Concurrent: OPP Process Timeout and Concurrent: OPP Response Timeout from 300 to 900. Now Check Writer XML CompleteS without any warnings. I appreciate your response.
    Thank You, Naveen G.

But getting a lot of errors.
    Can you help me out.
    Where am I going wrong.
So, I can then get this to work, then it shows the colours and the fonts on the specified data grid.
    Can you help.
Want to get this working and passed today if possible.
Will pasate the code and the errors below.

  • Brief explaination of REST,Webservices,CSON and JSON

brief explaination of REST,Webservices,CSON and JSON

    http://www.simplecodestuffs.com/what-is-the-difference-between-http-and-rest-and-soap-in-web-services/
SOAP uses WSDL for communication between consumer and provider, whereas REST just uses XML or JSON to send and receive data
WSDL Defines contract between client and service and is static by its nature. In case of REST contract is somewhat complicated and is defined by HTTP, URI, Media Formats and Application Specific Coordination
Protocol. It’s highly dynamic unlike WSDL.
SOAP doesn’t return human readable result, while REST result is readable with is just plain XML or JSON
This is not true. Plain XML or JSON are not RESTful at all. None of them define any controls(i.e. links and link relations, method information, encoding information etc…) which is against REST as far as messages must be self contained and coordinate interaction
    between agent/client and service.
With links + semantic link relations clients should be able to determine what is next interaction step and follow these links and continue communication with service.
It is not necessary that messages be human readable, it’s possible to use cryptic format and build perfectly valid REST applications. It doesn’t matter whether message is human readable or not.
Thus, plain XML(application/xml) or JSON(application/json) are not sufficient formats for building REST applications. It’s always reasonable to use subset of these generic media types which have strong semantic meaning and offer enough control information(links
etc…) to coordinate interactions between client and server.
REST is over only HTTP. HTTP is most widely used and when we talk about REST web services we just assume HTTP. HTTP defines interface with it’s methods(GET, POST, PUT, DELETE, PATCH etc) and various headers
which can be used uniformly for interacting with resources. This uniformity can be achieved with other protocols as well.
REST permits many different data formats where as SOAP only permits XML.
While this may seem like it adds complexity to REST because you need to handle multiple formats, in my experience it has actually been quite beneficial. JSON usually is a better fit for data and parses much faster. REST allows better support for browser clients
due to it’€™s support for JSON.

  • Multiple plugtmp-1 plugtmp-2 etc. in local\temp folder stay , crossdomain.xml and other files containing visited websitenames created while private browsing

    OS = Windows 7
When I visit a site like youtube whith private browsing enabled and with the add-on named "shockwave flash" in firefox add-on list installed and activate the flashplayer by going to a video the following files are created in the folder C:\Users\MyUserName\AppData\Local\Temp\plugtmp-1
    plugin-crossdomain.xml
    plugin-strings-nl_NL-vflLqJ7vu.xlb
The contents of plugin-crossdomain contain both the "youtube.com" adress as "s.ytimg.com" and is as follows:
    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <!DOCTYPE cross-domain-policy SYSTEM "http://www.macromedia.com/xml/dtds/cross-domain-policy.dtd">
    -<cross-domain-policy> <allow-access-from domain="s.ytimg.com"/> <allow-access-from domain="*.youtube.com"/> </cross-domain-policy>
The contents of the other file I will spare you cause I think those are less common when I visit other sites but I certainly don't trust the file. The crossdomain.xml I see when I visit most other flashpayer sites as well.
I've also noticed multiple plugin-crossdomain-1.xml and onwards in numbers, I just clicked a youtube video to test, got 6 of them in my temp plus a file named "plugin-read2" (no more NL file cause I changed my country, don't know how youtube knows where I'm from, but that's another subject, don't like that either). I just noticed one with a different code:
    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    -<cross-domain-policy> <allow-access-from domain="*"/> </cross-domain-policy>
So I guess this one comprimises my browsing history a bit less since it doesn't contain a webadress. If these files are even meant to be deposited in my local\temp folder. The bigger problem occurs when they stay there even after using private browsing, after clearing history, after clearing internet temporary files, cache, whatever you can think of. Which they do in my case, got more than 50 plugtmp-# folders in the previous mentioned local\temp folder containing all website names I visited in the last months. There are a variety of files in them, mostly ASP and XML, some just say file. I have yet to witness such a duplicate folder creation since I started checking my temp (perhaps when firefox crashes? I'd say I've had about 50 crashes in recent months).
I started checking my temp because of the following Microsoft Security Essential warnings I received on 23-4-12:
    Exploit:Java/CVE-2010-0840.HE
    containerfile:C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Temp\jar_cache2196625541034777730.tmp
    file:C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Temp\jar_cache2196625541034777730.tmp->pong/reversi.class
    and...
    Exploit:Java/CVE-2008-5353.ZT
    containerfile:C:\Users\Noname\AppData\Local\Temp\jar_cache1028270176376464057.tmp
    file:C:\Users\Noname\AppData\Local\Temp\jar_cache1028270176376464057.tmp->Testability.class
Microsoft Security Essentials informed me that these files were quarantained and deleted but when going to my temp file they were still there, I deleted them manually and began the great quest of finding out what the multiple gigabytes of other files and folders were doing in that temp folder and not being deleted with the usual clearing options within firefox (and IE).
Note that I have set my adobe flasplayer settings to the most private intense I could think of while doing these tests (don't allow data storage for all websites, disable peer-to peer stuff, don't remember exactly anymore, etc.). I found it highly suspicious that i needed to change these settings online on an adobe website, is that correct? When right-clicking a video only limited privacy options are available which is why I tried the website thing.
After the inital discovery of the java exploit (which was discovered by MSE shortly after I installed and started my first scan with Malwarebytes, which in turn made me suspicious whether I had even downloaded the right malwarebytes, but no indication in the filename if I google it). Malwarebytes found nothing, MSE found nothing after it said it removed the files, yet it didn't remove them, manually scanning these jar_cache files with both malwarevytes and MSE resulted in nothing. Just to be sure, I deleted them anyways like I said earlier. No new jar_cache files have been created, no exploits detected since then. CCleaner has cleaned most of my temp folder, I did the rest, am blocking all cookies (except for now shortly), noscript add-on has been running a while on my firefox (V 3.6.26) to block most javascripts except from sites like youtube. I've had almost the same problem using similar manual solutions a couple of months ago, and a couple of months before that (clearing all the multiple tmp folders, removing or renaming jar_cache manually, running various antmalware software, full scan not finding a thing afterwards, installing extra add-ons to increase my security, this time it's BetterPrivacy which I found through a mozilla firefox https connection, I hope, which showed me nicely how adobe flash was still storing LSO's even after setting all storage settings to 0 kb and such on the adobe website, enabling private browsing in firefox crushed those little trolls, but still plugtmp trolls are being created, help me crush them please, they confuse me when I'm looking for a real threat but I still want to use flash, IE doesn't need those folders and files, or does it store them somewhere else?).
I'm sorry for the long story and many questions, hope it doesn't scare you away from helping me fight this. I suspect it's people wanting to belong to the hackergroup Anonymous who are doing this to my system and repeating their tricks (or the virus is still there, but I've done many antivirus scans with different programs so no need to suggest that option to me, they don't find it or I run into it after a while again, so far, have not seen jar_cache show up). Obviously, you may focus on the questions pertaining firefox and plugtmp folders, but if you can help me with any information regarding those exploits I would be extremely grateful, I've read alot but there isn't much specific information for checking where it comes from when all the anti-virus scanners don't detect anything anymore and don't block it incoming. I also have downloaded and installed process monitor but it crashes when I try to run it. The first time I tried to run it it lasted the longest, now it crashes after a few seconds, I just saw the number of events run up to almost a million and lots of cpu usage. When it crashed everything returned back to normal, or at least that's what I'm supposed to think I guess. I'll follow up on that one on their forum, but you can tell me if the program is ligit or not (it has a microsoft digital signature, or the name micosoft is used in that signature).

    update:
I haven't upgraded my firefox yet because of a "TVU Web Player" plugin that isn't supported in the new firefox and I'm using it occasionally, couldn't find an upgrade for it. Most of my other plugins are upgraded in the green (according to mozilla websitechecker):
    Java(TM) Platform SE 6 U31 (green)
Shockwave for Director (green - from Adobe I think)
Shockwave Flash (green - why do I even need 2 of these adobe add-ons? can I remove one? I removed everything else i could find except the reader i think, I found AdobeARM and Adobe Acrobat several versions, very confusing with names constantly switching around)
Java Deployment Toolkit 6.0.310.5 (green, grrr, again a second java, why do they do this stuff, to annoy people who are plagued with java and flash exploits? make it more complicating?)
Adobe Acrobat (green, great, it's still there, well I guess this is the reader then)
TVU Web Player for FireFox (grey - mentioned it already)
Silverlight Plug-In (yellow - hardly use it, I think, unless it's automatic without my knowing, perhaps I watched one stream with it once, I'd like to remove it, but just in case I need it, don't remember why I didn't update, perhaps a conflict, perhaps because I don't use it, or it didn't report a threat like java and doesn't create unwantend and history compromising temp files)
Google Update (grey - can I remove? what will i lose? don't remember installing it, and if I didn't, why didn't firefox block it?)
    Veetle TV Core (grey)
Veetle TV Player (grey - using this for watching streams on veetle.com, probably needs the Core, deleted the broadcaster that was there earlier, never chose to install that, can't firefox regulate that when installing different components? or did i just miss that option and assumed I needed when I was installing veetle add-on?)
Well, that's the list i get when checking on your site, when i use my own browseroptions to check add-ons I get a slightly different and longer list including a few I have already turned off (which also doesn't seem very secure to me, what's the point in using your site then for anything other than updates?), here are the differences in MY list:
I can see 2 versions of Java(TM) Platform SE 6 U31, (thanks firefox for not being able to copy-paste this)
one "Classic Java plug-in for Netscape and Mozilla"
the other is "next generation plug-in for Mozilla browsers".
I think I'll just turn off the Netscape and Mozilla one, don't trust it, why would I need 2? There I did it, no crashes, screw java :P
There's also a Mozilla Default plugin listed there, why does firefox list it there without any further information whether I need it or not or whether it really originates from Mozilla firefox? It doesn't even show up when I use your website plugin checker, so is there no easy way by watching this list for me to determin I can skip worrying about it?
There's also some old ones that I recently deactivated still listed like windows live photo gallery, never remember adding that one either or needing it for anything and as usual, right-clicking and "visit homepage" is greyed out, just as it is for the many java crap add-ons I encountered so far.
Doing a quick check, the only homepage I can visit is the veetle one. The rest are greyed out. I also have several "Java Console" in my extentions tab, I deactivated all but the one with the highest number. Still no Java Console visible though, even after going to start/search "java", clicking java file and changing the settings there to "show" console instead of "hide" (can't remember exact details).
There's some other extentions from noscript, TVU webplayer again, ADblock Plus and now also BetterPrivacy (sidenote, a default.LSO remains after cleanup correct? How do I know that one isn't doing anything nasty if it's code has been changed or is being changed? To prevent other LSO's I need to use both private browsing and change all kinds of restrictions online for adobe flashplayer, can anyone say absurd!!! if you think you're infected and want to improve your security? Sorry that rant was against Adobe, but it's really against Anonymous, no offense).

  • Open XML and using xslt with JavaScript

    Hello,
I want the user to be able to choose an XML-file. This XML-file should not be placed in InDesign, there is not even a document needed for my script. All I need is a variable, containing the file. However, the XML-file should be transformed with xslt into another XML-file. How do I do this?
This is how I open the first XML-file, the one that should be transformed:
       var xmlDoc = File.openDialog ("Choose XML");
       if (xmlDoc == null) {return;}
        xmlDoc.open("r");
        xmlDoc = xmlDoc.read();
        xmlDoc = new XML(xmlDoc);
I can adress different nodes and use xmlDoc as an XML-file, so that's fine, but how do I transform it?
I read the Scripting Guide and tried this:
        var myDocument = app.documents.add();
        var myXMLImportPreferences = app.xmlImportPreferences;
        myXMLImportPreferences.transformFilename = "c:\myTransform.xsl";
        var xx = myDocument.importXML(File.openDialog ("XML"));
However, it's not exactly what I want since I have to create a document and it's not working either, since xx stays undefined.
    Thanks for your help.

You can't get exactly what you want.
Your first code example uses the InDesign JavaScript interpreter's XML support, called E4X. It has absolutely nothing to do with the InDesign document object model or InDesign's internal support for XML. It exists only within the JavaScript interpreter. It does not support XSLT transformations.
Your second example leverages InDesign's built-in XSLT support (I'm not too sure how this works...); but that is only useful when importing XML into
InDesign, which, as you have learned, requires a document.
In the first example, you could call out to an external invokation of xsltproc and read in the input. How to do that differs for Windows and Mac.
In the second example, you could export the XML from your Document back out to an XML file and read it back in with E4X.
None of this is very appealing. What do you really need to do?

  • Report Control and Multiple Datasets/Result Sets

I have four results sets, Plan, Forecast, Actual and SPLY per eight different product lines.  I want to add conditional formatting of background color if actual is above or below Plan and/or Forecast.  The report needs to export properly to Excel.
Is there a way I can use one control rather than multiple text boxes to display the data, allow for conditional formatting and export to Excel.?  Thanks!
    Environment:
    SSRS 2010
    SQL Server 2012

    Hi blairv,
If I understand correctly, you have a dataset in the report which include four fields: Plan, Forecast, Actual and SPLY. Each filed contains eight values.
In SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), we can use table, matrix or list display report data in cells. The cells typically contain text data such as text, dates, and numbers but they can also contain gauges, charts, or report items such as images.
    Reference: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd220592.aspx
In your case, we can use expression to configure these items background color. Please refer to the following steps:
Click a specific text box in the report. Click BackgroundColor prompt in the Properties dialog box.
Click Expression prompt. And fill with expression below:
    =IIF(Fields! Actual.Value>Fields! Plan.Valeu Or Fields! Actual.Value>Fields! Forecast.Valeu,”Red”,”Blue”)

  • XML PO PRINT REPORT for different Operating Units

    Hi all,
We are stuck at a point, hope someone helps us out.
Requirement : We need to generate PO print report in pdf format for US and Mexico , both having different layout.
Things done : We customized standard PO Print report to fetch XML output from it, and attached rtf(developed) to it.
Things working fine : For US , report is perfectly fine and looks good.
Issue : We need to generate for Mexico as well with different format.
We have value in xml tags which can distinguish between US and Mexico OU's and we can simple use if else condition in the template itself .
Here limitation is we have made MS word header as the PO header so we are not able to create different header for Mexico in the same rtf.
We dont want to complicate the rtf much with more loops by removing it from Header and then page break and all.
Can someone suggest something like use one rtf which handles both the format OR two different rtf registered for same concurrent program and which are called on the base OU.
We are totally fine if we can do something while registering to Apps.
Please let me know if any one wants more information.
    Hoping for a positive reply.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Vishal,
Assuming you are using R12+, you can have seperate templates used for differrent OUs. In the PO Approval workflow it shall pick the respective template.
During submission of concurrent program "PO Output for Communication", you can specify the right template in the input parameters.

  • Override JNDI names in persistence.xml and @resource annotation

I have a Java EE 7 application that I am developing for use with both GlassFish and WildFly, but I have discovered that both application servers use a slightly different format for specifying JNDI names.
In GlassFish the persistence.xml file references the data source jdbc/myDataSouce, but in WildFly the data source needs to be java:/jdbc/myDataSource.The same is also true for classes that are annotated with @Resource. In GlassFish the annotation for a class using JavaMail would be @Resource(name = "mail/myMailSession"), but to deploy onto WildFly this would need to be @Resource(name = "java:mail/myMailSession").
The only solution I've got at present is using Maven to create two different releases of the EAR file, with one EAR file containing a persistence.xml file with the data source jdbc/myDataSouce for use with GlassFish, and the second EAR file containing a persistence.xml file with the data source java:/jdbc/myDataSource for use with WildFly. Unfortunately, I haven't found a solution for the @Resource annotation.
I've taken a look at the documentation for glassfish-application.xml and glassfish-ejb-jar.xml and have tried using resource-ref to override the JNDI names but the application fails to deploy due to an error in the name.
My question is does GlassFish provide any capability to override the JNDI names specified in the persistence.xml file and classes with the @resource annotation?
    Many Thanks
    Paul

Have you been able to solve this? I'm attempting to understand what Web Server 7 can do with regard to Java Persistence and what elements of it require Glassfish.
I've also spent great amounts of time in WS6.1 trying to figure out why a JNDI resource couldn't be found. The rules of thumb I've learned are:
    - Try dropping the *'java:/comp/env/* prefix; just use jdbc/pact part
    - Make sure all referrences (in web.xml and sun-web.xml) are identical with regard to that name.
I'm hoping you're not still dealing with this (it's been two months!) but if anybody else stumbles on this, maybe it'll help them.

  • XML and XSD file to an internal table

I had read a lot of thread  but i don't understand how to deal with xml/xsd in R3.
I need someone that have a definite example for this escenary please.
With OPEN DATASET took from the server XML and XSD file, and put it in two internal tables type string.
What functions or method have to use, and how to use them, to charge the XML file in an internal table?
This is an example of XML and XDS:
    XML
    AND CONTINUE
    Best Regards,

I just tried to interpret your question, it was not obvious what you wanted.
I guess what you mean is that you have defined (statically) a deep structure, and you want to decode the XML into it. That is called a transformation (transaction STRANS, statement CALL TRANSFORMATION). You have the choice between 2 transformation languages: XSLT and ST. Of course, it depends what release you are running.
I advise you to play first with the ID transformation, to convert an ABAP deep structured data object into XML, so that you see what XML is generated, this one is called asXML. If you create your own transformation, when you call it, it will first convert automatically the data object to asXML, and the transformation has to do the rest of the job.
You can do the opposite, i.e. converting from XML to a data object, according to the same principle (intermediate asXML).
Well, there are lots of things to say, I recommend you to read articles and documentation on XSLT and ST (search on SDN).
About XSD, it won't help (and I did never see any possibility to use it) to decode the XML, as you must anyway define the target data object statically (and there's no tool to generate the ABAP code of the data object definition from the XSD).
Note that you may also use iXML libraries to parse the XML.
    Please tell us more.

  • XML and its influence over program design (2 issues)

I have 2 open questions about XML and Java. I apologise if they are not clear-cut or specific enough, but really I am fishing for sound advice.
I am trying to develop a J2EE application but find myself stuttering at an early stage because I cannot decide on the best design for my application. Part of my problem is a lack of experience with the different J2EE technologies/API (especially XML APIs), and the realisation that there is 101 ways to do what I want to do.
A major issue is this: my application basically is concerned with representing conversations between the server and a user, e.g. a simple sequence of yes/no questions asked by the server to the user, which the user replies to in turn. I believe that the XML format would be a very suitable way to represent these conversations. My first question is:
    * Should the decision to use XML as a storage format influence the design of the rest of the program? I feel that in choosing XML to represent the conversation data, I am stuck thinking about the rest of my program in a XML way (i.e. doing everything using a DOM etc.). Am I right in thinking that my program should be designed in such a way that an XML-based storage system could be easily interchanged with, say, a relational flat-tabled database?
    My second question is:
    * Imagine that each conversation contains one or more questions, and there are, say, 4 different types of question (e.g. yes/no, multiple choice, etc.). Each of these needs to be handled in a different way. Is there a good pattern or recommended way of handling this sort of situation in code, ideally avoiding a big 'if' or switch statement (e.g. if the node is of "ABC" type do this, else if it is "yes/no"...). It would be great if one could easily add new types of question to the XML and then similarly one can make easy additions to the code to cope with these new cases.
Thank you very much indeed for any advice.

I am trying to develop a J2EE application but find
myself stuttering at an early stage because I cannot
decide on the best design for my application. Part of
my problem is a lack of experience with the different
J2EE technologies/API (especially XML APIs), and theThat's nothing to be ashamed of. And realising that you lack experience and trying to remedy that is a good sign.
A major issue is this: my application basically is
concerned with representing conversations between the
server and a user, e.g. a simple sequence of yes/no
questions asked by the server to the user, which the
user replies to in turn. I believe that the XML
format would be a very suitable way to represent
these conversations. My first question is:
XML might be overkill if it's just a question followed by an answer and neither contains complex hierarchical data structures.
    * Should the decision to use XML as a storage format
influence the design of the rest of the program? ICertainly not.
XML should represent data structures that are natural to your program, thus becoming a tool rather than forcing its structure upon you.
feel that in choosing XML to represent the
conversation data, I am stuck thinking about the rest
of my program in a XML way (i.e. doing everything

program should be designed in such a way that an
XML-based storage system could be easily interchanged
with, say, a relational flat-tabled database?
Flexibility is good to keep in mind, but at the moment I'd worry about just getting something to work.
    * Imagine that each conversation contains one or more
questions, and there are, say, 4 different types of
question (e.g. yes/no, multiple choice, etc.). Each

Think of a factory that creates the handlers on the fly based on the actual message received.
If the factory makes use of some mapping construct to do so there's no need for any conditionals at all in your decision tree.
I've myself used XML structures successfully to define such mappings (and so have others) on disc, but simple ones can be easily represented using just a properties file.
