AVCHD Media for PowerPC based hardware

I have posted this earlier in an other thread but my posting has so far been ignored, so I am trying a new thread:
We have just invested over 1500$ to upgrade to FCStudio 2 as well as stashing 3 more gigas of SDRAM into a G5, as I need to edit HD video from 2 different media: HDV and SDHC cards with AVCHD formated video content!
Obviously, Apple hasn't been shy trying (and succeding) in selling me the upgrade from Production Suite to FC Studio 2 as well as recommanding me to install at least 4Go of Ram to handle uncompressed HDVideo, but forgetting entirely to point out that my set up would not work with AVCHD media (as I am such an old customer that runs a real nice but 3 year old PowerPC !)
Having installed FCStudio 2 and the extra 3 Go of Ram, I got really quite confused discovering in the FCP6 "Working with High Def Infos" one fateful line stating that AVCHD media is unsupported on Power PC based hardware! Right after installing FCStudio 2, I did install the Upgrade to FCP 6.01 and the Note that goes together with that upgrade proudly states that the AVCHD codec is NOW supported! (But again it is not saying that AVCHD is NOT supported on Power PC based systems).
Finally, I have tried to List and Import some AVCHD footage but to no awail. Just getting the darn warning cooly stating that my AVCHD media is unsupported on my PowerPC based hardware.
So my question is: If the VOLTAIC people are able to supply a seemingly perfectly good AVCHD converter for 30 US$ (while giving away half of its price for cancer research), you would think that the FCP people or the QT people would have been able to do the same! I have no idea why this is not the case! I don't like to assume things but one thought is kind of nagging at me: Could it just be that the Apple marketing people told the FCP or QT people to drop this idea as they really now have to have me buy a new Intel based machine ... Am I missing something ? Am I confused ? Am I frustrated ? YES, at least for the two last questions.
I still have to discover if the AVCHD converter will work with my PowerPC based hardware ! If not, what would be the way to convert my AVCHD files to another HD format supported by my system ?

FC6 deals with AVCHD by converting to AIC or ProRez. This is not a native solution. Yes you need to convert, and I can't remember if this Voltiac works on PPC or Intel so that may be a source for you.
To transcode in real time means converting right out of the camera if it has an HDMI port. If it does then the conversion happens in real time from a processor inside the camera and converts to uncompressed HD. Then you would need an HDMI to HD-SDI converter to send this to an HD-SDI Capture Card if you G5 was a PCI-X slot so you can use one. Have I lost you yet? I hope you have a fat wallet for this.
One way for sure to work in real time is with a new Mac Pro and a Black Magic Intensity HDMI capture card for those who want solid solutions to these small cameras.
Does this help you now?
Good Luck

    User-based Hardware Sizing
    Long Text
    Dear SAP Support,
We would like to know the SAP Hardware sizing for "User-Based sizing".
    Our queries is
    1. In "User-Based sizing", What we have to consider,
the number of users are calculated in the basis of
Concurrent users in the system in a given point of time
    or
total number of users logged into the systems in the whole day?
We have referred the SAP document "Sizing SAP System" and the above
    point are not clearly mentioned.
    Regards,

As the document says there are number of possible definitions for "users" in SAP context...
For understanding assume that no of users logged to the system they consume different resources / areas in the system, some login to the system whole day but they don't work whole day, some user open multiple session to work while other open multiple session but they don't exactly work on it which means (every new session consume memory/resources) like you said their are concurrent users wherein they work and consume resources (SAP WPs)
So before finalizing the sizing first compare the both reports (user based, thorhgput) and read the advantages and disadvantages for both. You can also consult with SAP / Account Manager to help you
as per SAP document there's no point in counting no of pc's, laptops to calculate no of users

  • Is there an Apple Hardware Test for PowerPC G5?

Is there an Apple Hardware Test for PowerPC G5? Is it on disc, downloadable from Apple?

You can call Apple support to find out if they still have original OS X disks available for your system. Apple has been letting the disk inventory run out, so they may or may not still have them. Last I recall they were charging around $60 for the set.
If the disks are not available, TechTool Pro would be the commercially available hardware test tool that is available: http://www.micromat.com/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=104

Premiere Pro CC crashes immediateley playing AVCHD media in browser (running OSX 10.8 > please help!
I've been running CS6 perfectly on OSX 10.8.4. but decided to update to a trial CC. That's when all the fuss began.
Trying to play AVCHD material in the browser and it good stuck. Forced quit and then opened again. Then it good stuck in the startingwindow already.
Reinstalled CC, because it might have been the installation. But again failed.
Then used Adobe cleaner tool. But still failed.
Then decided to go back to cs6. But now that one gets stuck too.
Again deinstalled everything with Cleaner tool, and installed my CC trial again. Still gets stuck.
Tried to make a new user without any Adobe on it, but still fails.
What can I do? Because of all this mess I'm a week late on my editing-schedule, which is very frustrating. I might have to go back to FCP, and I don't want to.
    Please help me!
    Thanks so much.

  • Getting my head around editing in h.264, Proxy Media, or Optimized Media for Canon DSLR

I'm trying to understand these different workflows, how they work, plusses and minues of each, with a focus on how it relates to file size.  Please help me fill in the gaps
    Here's what I think I know now.
    Optmize meda to ProRes 422
Better for performance, but creates HUGE files.  On 30 GB worth of h.264 footage, the optimzed files were over 100 GB, not including any render files, etc.  I'm running off a laptop and only use external drives for storage, so I'd like to find a better way that uses less disk space and requires less time to convert (took all night for those 100 GB)
    Proxy Media
Creates an easy to edit file that is very poor resolution and quality.  You can use this for editing, then before final export, switch back to original/optimized media and it will re-render and reconnect with the good media.
QUESTION: If I ONLY do the Proxy optimization, do I need to also Optimize to ProRes 422 at some point also, or can I just have it refer to the h.264 .mov files and get equivalent results?  If I can, this seems like a good compromize.
Editing directly with the h.264 footage
I have read that some people are dropping the footage directly into the timeline and editing without any real problems.  Others say it will cause performance issues and to always optimize.  Ideally I'd like to do this way as it is the quickest (no conversion) and has the smallest file sizes of all of them.
It would also be useful to start out this way and optimize later if I need to on the smaller sub-set of the footage.  But I have found no good way to do a rough cut with little editing and then select only those clips used in the timeline for optimization in case I start experiencing slowdowns.  Yes, you can clip-by-clip select them and "show in event browser," but you can't do this with multiple clips as far as I can tell.
So what are your workflow tips for keeping file size down?  What am I missing in my understanding of these options?
I'm on a 2010 MBP i7 (dual core) with a 7200 RPM drive for what it's worth since I know the h.264 one largely depends on the hardware.

    Proxy Media
If I ONLY do the Proxy optimization, do I need to also Optimize to ProRes 422 at some point also ...
Nope. You don't need to do the "Optimze Media" at all, you can use with the Proxy media for your working edit, then switch the references back to the Original media for mastering/export.
... or can I just have it refer to the h.264 .mov files and get equivalent results?  If I can, this seems like a good compromize.
Exactly. And yes it is, an excellent compromise. Start working with the original media right away, but have FCPX create proxies in the background (which it switches to using as soon as each one becomes ready); if at any point you need to check a clip in place in the timeline in full resolution then you can just quickly toggle your general playback preference to "Use original", otherwise just edit away with the proxies and then switch that preference back to "Use original" when you are ready to output.
Editing directly with the h.264 footage
I have read that some people are dropping the footage directly into the timeline and editing without any real problems.  Others say it will cause performance issues and to always optimize.
Yep, you can edit just with the original media if you choose but your source footage is H264, a dreadful edit codec by any measure, and certainly you will get much better timeline performance if you work with transcoded Optimized or Proxy media instead.

  • Recommended storage for Network-based accounts?

Hello everyone. Sorry in advance for all the following information, but I want to thorough in hopes of allowing you to offer better input. I'm using an Xserve 2 x 2.8 Ghz. Quad Xeon (Mac OS X Server 10.6.6) with 22 GBs RAM and 6 GB NIC LACP bond to our backbone switch. This switch feeds three labs, each with their own gigabit switch, with a total of approximately 50 iMacs combined. All iMacs are connected via gigabit ethernet. All user accounts are network-based, bound to the Xserve via OD via AFP. I have WGM folder-redirects to keep the user caches folder and some of the Adobe stuff off the network for better performance. Primary software is the Adobe Creative Suite Premium CS5 throughout; with one lab using Final Cut Express & Pro and Adobe After Effects. This lab has local partitions for the high I/O requirements of video editing (so I'm not looking to sustain multiple HD streams over the network. etc.). I installed an 8TB OWC Mercury Rack Pro (external hardware RAID enclosure) with an Oxford 936 chipset this past summer, which is currently configured as RAID 5 and connected to the Xserve via a NewerTech 6GB-capable SATA host card (also provided by OWC). All of our network home directories are on the OWC Mercury Rack Pro. We also upgraded two of our three labs with brand new 27" Intel i5 iMacs this past summer. Lastly, I upgraded the Xserve to Snow Leopard also this past summer.
    The Problem:
Since the upgrades this past summer (Snow Leopard Server, OWC Mercury Rack Pro, new iMacs), network account performance is notably more sluggish (log-in, opening apps, etc.) compared to before the upgrades (Xserve was running Server 10.5.8, labs had Mac Mini systems with gigabit running Mac OS X 10.5.8 and Adobe CS4). My network accounts were on an eSATA Rocstor ArticRoc RAID 5 unit previously, connected to the Xserve via an older Sonnet Tempo-X SATA card (which was PCI-X, not PCI-Express).
Turns out the new iMacs don't support jumbo frames (yikes!), but notwithstanding that issue, it appears like the new Mercury Rack Pro might not be performing well under load. I've done some testing using OWC's provided QuickBench software. I logged into 3 iMacs using a local admin account, mounted three separate home directories from the Xserve and started testing performance simultaneously (to simulate multiple user access). The iMacs were next to each other, so my tests were started about 1 second apart, but were otherwise running simultaneously. Here's the results for review:
The tests were performed without file caching enabled, to better gauge the raw storage performance. The results for each test file size are in MB/sec and the 4 result columns in order from left to right are Seq. Read, Seq. Write, Rand. Read, Rand. Write. The averages are totaled at the bottom. Hope this comes through in a readable fashion...

It appears that small file performance is poor (historically a problem via AFP, I recall), but the Random Write performance is what scared me the most. It's very low across the spectrum. I'm going to provide these results to OWC for review, but wanted to get some additional perspective from the community. I'd appreciate any thoughts or ideas you might share.
    Related Question:
We may have 35 users logged in at peak time. But given that I'm hosting network accounts for approximately 50 gigabit-equipped Macs, what would you recommend (or are you using) for storage based on my usage criteria mentioned earlier? I'm hoping there's a solution that's less expensive than the fibre-channel Promise RAID (or equivalent); as our budget unfortunately won't support that. Any storage solutions in the SATA realm that might be sufficient for hosting home directories where video capture isn't required?
Thanks for your patience and your advice!
    Regards - Zeek

RE: options (b) or (c) with external firewire or USB drives -- if you go this route, are you thinking of afp- or smb-mounting (i.e., ⌘k in Finder) the mini or cube or G3? If so, you'll want to get ahold of SharePoints (unless you know how to create mount points in NetInfo), so you can create an additional mount point on the mini or cube or G3 for your external drive. As you know, when you afp-mount another Mac, the mount points that show up are the individual user accounts on that other Mac /Users/{shortUserNameGoesHere}. But an external firewire drive would not be visible at /Volumes/{extDriveNameGoesHere} on the mini or cube or G3 from these User mount points because /Volumes/{extDriveNameGoesHere} is not in the path of /Users/{shortUserNameGoesHere}. The only way that you could get there would be if you connected as admin on the cube or mini or G3, and then mounted the mini or cube or G3 at its root (/). But you might not want to let regular user accounts access the cube or mini or G3 as admin. But SharePoints will let you define that mount point, so when you ⌘k, it shows up just like the user names do. I am not familiar with smb mounts (for the benefit of your Wintel boxes) but SharePoints will let you define smb mount points, too. It has enabled me to create a "community (inbound) fax" afp mount point, for remote users to retrieve faxes from my computer, as well as permit a "central" afp-mount point for all my users' dropboxes, so you don't have to mount every user if you have multiple drops to make. (That required me to actually move all the drop boxes to a common folder, and make aliases to those locations back in the original users' drop box locations). So you might want to look into SharePoints if you decide to go this route.

  • Is there a Flash Player 10 Debugger version for PowerPC Macs?

At http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html  in the debugger version section, I see only content debugger for Intel-based Macs.  My main development system is a PowerPC Mac.
I see a link below that titled "Flash Player 10 Projector content debugger" but no explanation of what "Projector" means. I am hesitant to install this since it appears different than other debuggers and I have had a lot of trouble with losing connectivity to FP debuggers in the past.
Is there any way for me to debug my project with FP10?
    Thanks.

  • Whats the best/fastest format to convert avchd to, for edit purposes?

Whats best format to convert 1920/1080 avchd to, for editing purposes?
I tryed converting to HDV but didnt like the quality. I then tryed to convert the raw avchd files to mpeg2 @ 35 mbps. That is much cleaner but renders slow...about 1-1 ratio.
Looking for a codec that is fast to convert to & clean.
I have aPC, Win 7,  6 core, 32 gig ram,Raid 0,  fast cuda card ect...

AVCHD has the same data rate as DV, so shuttling that fast will not be a disk problem, even from a single drive, let alone a RAID 0.  If it stutters, it's a CPU thing.
Conversion to any other format is going to expand the data rate significantly, requiring your RAID to work harder.  Though the CPU will likely work less, so that could fix the stuttering.
You can always add all the clips to a sequence, and then add that sequence to the Source Monitor for editing as if it were one long clip.
Having said all that, if you still feel the need to convert then I recommend the free and lossless UT codec.  You can export out the combined clips right from PP, and the new media will not suffer any quality loss due to conversion.

  • Best DVD Media for Burning

    Hey guys,
I just bought a new macbook. Any recommendations on a specific brand of dvd I should buy. Please post a link based on your recommendations of the specific product you are referring too. Thanks for your help.

DVD+R Taiyo Yuden are rated the best for long term storage. With DVD+R Mitsubishi / Verbatim recommended second.
Here' a poll for the best DVD- media for long term storage:

Results are the same as DVD+.
It's a very interesting forum...basically users looking for the perfect burn. I've replaced my old Apple 2X DVD burner in my QuickSilver with a $30.00 LiteON (Sony) 16X burner and flashed it with CD Freaks firmware for perfect and faster burns...or close to it anyway. But you'll need to use Windows machine to update firmware...pain in the butt!

  • EWR for JAVA Based Systems

I configured an Early Watch Report for 1 of our JAVA based Portal System including complete configuration for SMD and Wily.
We are on SP-15 on SolMan.

    Hi Ruediger,
This is what I am getting.
    =============================================================================
    EarlyWatch Alert - Development Landscape
    1 Service Summary
During the EarlyWatch Alert Service, we did not detect critical problems.
    Note:
All recommendations provided in this report are based on our general experience. We advise that you test them before using them in your production system. Also note that EarlyWatch Alert is an automatic service.
    Section Overview
    Rating Checked Area
    Java VM Memory Performance
    Java VM Activity Reporting
Note: For more information about EarlyWatch Alert, a sample EarlyWatch Alert report with explanations is available in the Media Library on SAP Service Marketplace (http://service.sap.com/ewa). This provides an overview of the check rating strategy and the KPIs that trigger the EWA alerts.
    Alert Message Overview
Note: If you need help investigating the alerts listed, order an EarlyWatch contract by contacting your local support organization or by creating a customer message under component SV-BO. If you already have such a contract, a detailed analysis can be performed during the next Service Session. Address the topic when preparing for the session.
    Note:
If your system suffers from serious performance problems, create a customer message under component SV-BO with the priority "High" or "Very High".
    2 Java Performance Data
    Reporting Interval
Data displayed in this section of the report was collected for the time frame specified below.
    System Start Time End Time
    NPD Sun Mar 09 00:00:00 EST 2008 Sun Mar 16 00:00:00 EST 2008
    2.1 Java VM Memory Performance
    2.1.1 Garbage Collection Time
Time spent in Garbage Collections (GC) prevents the Java virtual machine from executing any other task. Over the interval reported, this time is not critical.
Average GC Time (Cluster wide) [%]
    0.02
The table above displays the cluster-wide weekly average of Garbage Collection (GC) time. Garbage collections themselves have a direct impact on system performance. Furthermore, they may also be indicative of more substantial performance issues that may require further analysis.
Hostname Cluster Element ID Average [%] Max [%]
    xxxdev.xxx.com
The table above lists the average and the maximum GC time for the server nodes calculated as defined above. You should investigate particularly high values since these can point to critical situations. As a starting point to analyze errors, you should analyze the log files of the particular server node for the given timeframe.
    Recommendations:
If a high percentage of time is spent in garbage collections, you can measure its impact on performance directly. Thus, if the average value is particularly large, you need to analyze this from a general performance perspective. Temporarily high values of the GC time indicate critical situations. You should analyze these specific situations in comparison with other key performance indicators in this report to determine potential correlations.
2.1.2 Fraction of Full Garbage Collections
The maximum ratio of full garbage collection to all garbage collections is not critical in the reported interval.
Hostname Cluster Element ID Max [%]
    xxxdev.xxx.com
In general, minor garbage collections must occur more frequently than full garbage collections. A consecutive number of full garbage collections is a clear indicator that the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) is not removing objects from the old space. If the dynamic behavior of the JVM is dominated by old space memory removal, insufficient resources are available to accept requests and their newly-created objects. In this case, the parameter below is analyzed. On a floating interval of all garbage collections, the fraction of full garbage collections is calculated.
    2.1.3 Allocation Rate
The allocation rate quantifies the amount of memory allocated on the young generation each second. This therefore quantifies the input to the Java VM. Particularly high values indicate high JVM throughput and so should always be analyzed in parallel with the user load or the number of HTTP sessions.
    Allocation Rate (Cluster wide)[KB/s]
    1143
Hostname Cluster Element ID Average [KB/s]
    xxxdev.xxx.com
    2.1.4 Promotion Rate
The promotion rate quantifies the amount of memory transferred to the old space each second. Due to the infant mortality of Java objects, this value should always be much smaller than the allocation rate. One indicator of critical situations is a high ratio of promotion rate to allocation rate, since this implies efficient use of the Eden space cannot be made.
    Promotion Rate (Cluster wide)[KB/s]
    28
Hostname Cluster Element ID Average [KB/s]

  • Virtual Logic - for multiprovider based on InfoObjects, not based on cubes

    Hi all,
I am fully aware how to write virtual key fig/char code for multiproviders that are based on cubes, but not for multiproviders based on InfoObjects.  Oddly this has not been a necessity for a couple of years.
I need to understand how to translate the C_S_DATA components.
Normally, on a standard multprovider, I would assign a component thusly.
      ASSIGN COMPONENT G_POS_<i>multicubetechname_virtualchartechname</i>
        OF STRUCTURE C_S_DATA TO <l_var1>.
This does not work.  I can see in C_S_DATA that the objects of interest appear with the format K__xxxx and I am able to decipher those needed.
The question:  How do I assign these?
I have attempted the following with no luck.
      ASSIGN COMPONENT G_POS_<i>multicubetechname_K__xxxx.</i>
        OF STRUCTURE C_S_DATA TO <l_var1>.
    I have also tried this.
      ASSIGN COMPONENT G_POS_<i>masterInfoObjecttechname_K__xxxx.</i>
        OF STRUCTURE C_S_DATA TO <l_var1>.
And just for kicks I have tried this.
      ASSIGN COMPONENT G_POS_<i>masterInfoObjecttechname__Kxxxx.</i>
        OF STRUCTURE C_S_DATA TO <l_var1>.
Could someone shed some light on this?
    Many many thanks,
    Larry

Below is the 'c_s_data' components.  The K entries are the appropriate items, which I can tell by the character type and length.
    S____028
    S____1078
    S____1100
    S____1101
    K____1101
    K____028
    K____1100
    K____1078
Oddly, if I proceed as normal, using G_POS_<i>multicubetechname_attributetechname</i>, remember that the data in the cube is attribute data of the master InfoObject, the assignment returns the record number from c_s_data.  For example:
G_POS_<i>ZM_EMPL_0COMP_CODE</i> is passing the value of 7 which is the appropriate row number for K____1100 in c_s_data referenced above.
    Thanks for trying.
    Larry
