Avi video clip import question

Hi all, I am new to iMovie, seeking for help here. I use Vegas video (PC) to edit my home video for long, just bought a copy of iLife 06, it is impressive. I have many video clips in AVI format, when I import them in iMovie, does it actually convert the file to different format? If I capture video in iMovie, what video format would that be? The reason I am asking is because I still want to share the video clips in both Mac and PC platfrom. Thanks in advance!

Assuming all files are in the DV codec, iMovie will not "convert" a clip since that clip is in the DV codec. When iMovie captures, it will capture create a QT file in the DV codec (while Vegas captures an AVI file in the DV codec). Vegas will recognize a QT DV clip just as iMovie recognizes an AVI file DV clip. Beyond that, if you create a .mov file within iMovie and want to play that on a PC, the PC will need the QT player (which is free) in order to veiw the movie.

    JDunlop,
thanks for your quick reply to my java.sun.com forum posting! i just got back from vacation, so i didn't get a chance to try your method til now. i pulled your email address off the website to update you on my problem playing an avi file in JMStudio (JMF).
as per your instructions, i downloaded the divx player at www.divx.com and tried to play the avi file. this is the error the divx player gives:
    Divx Player 2.1
The file contains unknown video data
The file contains the following type of data:
    Video data: FOURCC code "MP42"
You may need to install a new video codec on your computer to watch this video
    Some quick questions:
    1. Where could I find the "MP42" codec to play my avi file in JMStudio (JMF)? Does java.sun.com have video codecs?
    2. You mentioned in your posting "If you don't have the one that was used in the encoding, your out of luck." Does this mean that I need to know how the avi file was originally coded and have the original codec to decode (play) it?
    Thanks,

P.S. If you need more Duke Dollars for your help, I'd be happy to award them to you.

sounds to me like you are missing a video codecs. If you don't have the one that was used in the encoding, your out of luck. Download the player from divx.com, it will tell you which codecs the video needs (if it won't play). You can then search the net for that particular codecs.

  • Video clips import but don't play

I import my avi video clips taken from my canon camera to imovie by makin them a .mov file though once i get them into imovie they just become a single picture, not a movie clip.
I want to make some still clips from these movie clips...anyway ideas?

I import my avi video clips taken from my canon camera to imovie by makin them a .mov file
    How do you do that?
AVI is just a container that can contain video in any form. What's inside the AVI? MPEG-1? MPEG-4? Motion JPEG?

iMovie works best with uncompressed audio. If your track is MP3 or AAC, you may get better results by converting your track to the AIFF format and then using that in iMovie.
You can do this in iTunes. Go to iTunes/Preferences and click the General button. On the General page, click the Import Settings button. Choose IMPORT USING: AIFF ENCODER.
(note: remember what you changed it from so you can change it back later, before you import another CD)
Now, in iTunes, select your track. Then click FILE/CREATE NEW VERSION/AIFF VERSION.

  • A video clip import for a new project keeps showing up as a clip from an older project.

So here's the issue, I succesfully imported and trimmed 95% of the video clips from my GoPro today. However, when I upload the piece de resistance, it shows up as a clip from an older project that I've already deleted. Despite showing me the older clip in the imported section, I can still play approximately 1/3 of the actual, new clip. Problem is it stops and doesn't allow me to work with the remaining footage. I've tried importing it straight from the SD card, copying it to the desktop first, etc. No luck. Any advice?

    So, it's Photoshop CS3.
Anyway, from what I understood, you open the photo directly form the disk in Photoshop. That is, you don't use Lightroom to open the photo in Photoshop. It just doesn't work this way. As I said above, Lightroom has no way of knowing when to import a photo that has been saved in Photoshop.
If you insist on using Jpegs for derivative files, your best way to go is indeed using Synchronize.
However, I'd advice to use a lossless format, like TIFF or PSD. Why leave image quality on the table (as Jeff Schewe likes to say)? Storage is cheap and you're editing only your best photos in Photoshop anyway.
And as an additional benefit, you can automate the process of importing derivatives:
Configure what file type to use in Prefs: TIFF or PSD, bit depth, color space etc.
Select an image in Lightroom and hit Ctrl+E.
The derivative file is created in the chosen format and opened in Photoshop.
    Edit and save in Photoshop.
Voila! Your edited derivative is already in Lightroom.

  • .AVI video not importing correctly. Imports as audio only.

    System: window vista 64 bit
Project type: whatever the standard new project is at the startup screen
Problem: I am importing .avi video files and they are importing as audio only. it will not allow me to drag them into the video slot on the timeframe, and it displays only the speaker symbol in the media management area. Here's the funny bit. I used these files previously in another session June-July 2009, and they worked fine then. I am lost and need assistance!(PLEASE!!)
    Stumped Like a Chump

If you look at the CODEC, it is Xvid, the opensource version of DivX, just as I suspected. These will almost never work in PrE. The best workflow is to go to before the Xvid compression (these are heavily compressed, loosing a ton of data and quality), or to convert them to DV-AVI Type II files with 48KHz 16-bit PCM/WAV Audio. I use DigitalMedia Converter, but it is shareware. Many users sing the praises of the free Prism to do the conversions. I have never used it, but many here have, and give it very high marks.
Note: no conversion program can ever reclaim that lost data and quality. It is lost and gone forever. That is why my first option was to go back to before that compression was applied. However, conversion will yield files that can be edited with both Video and Audio.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
[Edit] not sure why/how they were working before. Usually, with either the Xvid, or DivX CODEC's, one will get a Cannot Import error, or will get either Audio, or Video only. I have never been able to edit any Xvid, or DivX files, in either PrE, or PrPro - never even once. I just convert, if the client cannot get original source files, and I even have a quality loss diagram to show them how the footage will look - not very good, IMHO. I make them sign-off on that quality loss, before I start.

  • Cannot view video clips imported from casio s770 on leopard os macbook pro.

    hi
i've searched the boards for similar problems but can't seem to find the answer. I'm trying to view video clips uploaded from my casio ex s770 digital camera. I was able to do so before upgrading from my ibook g4 to the macbook pro preinstalled with leopard and i life 08. keep in mind i'm using imovie 06 to import and view video clips but all i hear is audio. I tried using quick time to view the video clips and received an error telling me i need to download more components to view the clip, i did so but to no avail.

  • Unknown symbols inside video clips imported form my iPhone 4 into iMovie 11

I recently upgraded my iLife to version 11 and have been really happy with the results so far. However when i import video clips from my iPhone 4 into one of my iMovie events it displayes a small yellow box in the bottom left corner of the clip. This box is not present on clips shot on other devices just my iphone clips. There are numbers inside the yellow box which on most of my clips says 30 but there are clips with 24 and 15. The presence of these boxes doesn't seem to be having a detremental effect and indeed all the editing functions still work. In addition these boxes are not present when the finished movie is exported. I'm not particularly bothered by their prescence but I would like to know why they are there, what they mean and if the can be removed?
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Thanks
Now that I understand what it is, is it possible to adjust the clip's frame rate to match the project or vise versa? I've looked at project properties for the project and its set to 25fps but the box is greyed out and cant be changed.
    Am I missing something?
    Thanks again.

  • How can I stop iMovie Crashing on video clip import

I have only been using iMovie a short time period. Most recently it started to crash every time I tried to manually import a video clip. I've reported it to Apple several times over the past 48 hours. Sometimes I'm just getting ready to import a clip when it crashes. Very frustrating! Here I am a recent Windows convert but I'm about to return to windows just to produce movies (even Windows crashed, but much less). Any thoughts on how to solve this problem would be appreciated.

If you don't get an answer here, you may want to post in the iMovie discussion here.

  • .avi video clip audio not working in premiere pro but play is windows media player

    Hi all,
Using .avi video files. They play fine in windows media player. In premiere pro, the video plays fine, but there is no audio. When moved to a sequence, it builds an audio track, but it is silent. Any help is appreciated.

AVI is a wrapper, what is inside YOUR wrapper - Exactly what is INSIDE the video you are editing?

  • Dragging AVI video clip from iPhoto to mail to send

I want to send a 2 minute video clip to some familly members, but mail keeps quitting when I hit send.

252.4MB is way too much for an email... the maximum capacity of an email should be around 10MB (20 at most). You should consider another way to send your file... (thumb drive?)
Another option is to use Quicktime Pro to re-encode the movie in a lighter file.

  • AVI video not importing correctly

My codecs just got messed up today when I was trying something out and so I had to download new ones. When I try to import .avi files now, the footage, during certain times, has some issues. (It's hard to describe) I wouldn't just say it's pixelated, but large pixels are distorted showing other colors, in the shape of some objects in the video. It does this every few seconds. The video is compressed, too. Even after I render the movie, it still does this. The playback speed is normal, it's just these pixels that keep destroying the footag. It's almost as if the program is not conforming the video correctly when I am importing it, and it's corrupting the video. What do I need to do to fix this? Additional codec(s)? I used to be able to import .avi movies with no problem. This is really bugging me. Thanks!

  • .mp4 Video File Import Question

I have imported my .mp4 home moves into itunes many times with no incident. I've used both the Roxio Popcorn app and also just add a .mp4 file to Library with no problem.
Now I have a home video that I've just completed and want to add to my movie library but when I use either the popcorn app or just save it and then add to library the video seems to vanish.
The little status bar at the top of itunes shows that its being imported, but when I go looking for it in Movies, TV shows etc then it is nowhere to be found.
I have a feeling its there but I just cant find it. Its somehow hidden.
    Has anyone any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Steve

Download and use MPEG Streamclip. Note that AVI is a container, not a format; you will need to know what codecs they support to be certain of creating a compatible AVI.

  • Video clip import error

I just aquired a canon HF R100 camcorder and I imported my first bit of video to iMovie 11 via SDHC class 10 card in the slot on my MacBook Pro, no problem. Now I've shot my second video which is broken into a handfull of clips and all but one clip will import. I can view the thumnail for the clip and it gets about 3/4 the way through import and gives me an error message. I've tried at different optimized sizes, tried importing through USB. Each variable leads to the same result. Is there some other way of retrieving this clip and importing to iMovie? If it's corrupted is there a way to repair it or salvage the parts around the corrupted bits? Or is it a loss. Is there something I should be doing to prevent this from happening again? Any input is greatly appreciated!

any chance you filmed some in 24P? Apple says, "If you plan on importing clips into iMovie '09, do not use Digital Cinema Mode settings when recording with your camcorder."
Here is what Apple says about imovie 11 compatibility.
