AxGPIB runs slower over time

Using Measurement Studio 6.0 for VB but from within a Visual Studio 2005 CSharp app, the components used are the AxCWGPIB ? that interface to the GPIB bus
everything works except over time, like 1 hour, it becomes noticeably slower, after 10 hours the cpu useage is peaked around 100%, each transfer takes a few seconds.  Am searching for any issues with this activeX, any leads appreciated.
rebooting the system makes it run faster, problem seems linked to the GPIB interface/driver which is the National Instruments/Measurement studio component that appears as AxCWGPIB
thanks for any assistance

yes thanks, I disabled the data logging and ran the tests that only did the gpib I/O.  doing this, it would increase in cpu useage much faster than if everything gets run.  Ive scoured the code for possible memory leaks
Is there supposed to be some special way to call and manage the Interop.CWInstrumentControlLibrary.dll  or ?? from the C# form world?
the documentation is extremely limited, but I put the control into the form1, then make calls from the code.  nothing to indicate that more is necessary, so what else is supposed to be done?
is there a difference between the cwgpib control in the dotnet version of Measurement Studio? or is it the same exact v1.4  for version 6.0?

Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
    Start with visits to:     OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney;
                                      The X Lab: The X-FAQs;
                                      The Safe Mac » Mac Performance Guide;
                                      The Safe Mac » The myth of the dirty Mac;
                                      Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.

If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
    Troubleshooting Applications
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
        drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Referenced software can be found at MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
    Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
    Mavericks and later
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the View menu.  Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

  • Data rate slows over time: Using Time Capsule (4th) and AirPort Express (1st)

Time Capsule using Airport Express to extend network.
Over 3-4 days my data rate gradually gets slower and slower until I have to reboot both TC and AE.
Fresh reboot gets me 10Mbs or better for a while and then slows over time to 2Mbs or less.
I can cable directly to the ISP modem, taking TC and AE out of the equation, and its smokin fast
No hair left to pull out, so any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

You have your wireless channels on auto.. it is usually better to control it.
You will notice I have different names for 2.4ghz and 5ghz.. then I can force the link to either band.
After you set Radio Channel selection to Manual,, click edit. You can then set the channels.
Lock the channels.. ie you take control and you set what the wireless channels will be.. when you extend wireless this works far better. The auto channel system has to run on the Extender.. but since the main base is fixed on the 2.4ghz so it will be also.. the only channel that can flap around is 5ghz (extender) since that is not under my control. Of course it is up to you to determine which channel works best.. I strongly recommend the upper channels for 2.4ghz and the lower channels for 5ghz.
So.. I have set 5ghz to 48 on the main base.. and the auto channel sets it to 149 in the extender.
One strange thing results from my setup .. (amongst many!!)
You cannot name the wireless for 5ghz in the extender.. so in my case the upstairs wireless extender has both 2.4ghz and 5ghz named TC24ghz.. nought that I can do about it. But it is not a big deal.
You can see the result in the wireless diagnostics. The last wireless I have put in the box.. it is named TC24ghz but is in fact running on 5ghz. That is just how the over automated system of the apple routers work.. If I could I would fix it.. and maybe shall via serial console at a later date.

  • Blackberry runs slower every time!?

When i synchronize my bb with my computer, it seems like it runs slower and slower every time {moving from screen to screen, or sending messages}. why is this? i found that if i reset it often, it helps, but i do not want to have to do this everytime! help!
    thanks!

You're lucky I'm so nice and zipped the files for you lol...j/k. Unzip the files to your media card, browse to the folder and open the .jad file. It should install it for you. This version is for OS 4.5 which I'm guessing you have.
    Enjoy!

  • LabVIEW running very slow over time

I have been working on a project at work for a device to measure the torque capacity of a damper. For this I have two torque transducers one small one large. And a linear actuator to help measure an angle using the law of cosines. My problem is within the first 30 seconds the program runs great after a minute or so it starts slowing down. Since this is a testing device safety is a top priorty and I would like to keep the delay to a mininum. The digital out in the while loop creates an output that shuts the linear actuator if the torque gets too high. Any ideas would be helpful to speed this up.
    Thanks for your time

Why are you creating a new DAQ task for the digital output within the loop itself on every iteration?  That Create task belongs before the loop.
You have 3 arrays that you are building continuously in shift registers.  As they grow, the computer needs to find ever larger pieces of contiguous memory to store those arrays.  I'm surprised you are having problems after only 30 seconds, but not surprised you are having the problems ultimately.  I bet the reason I listed above is the reason it is happening so fast.
Try using the producer consumer archtitecture to pass the values off to a parallel loop and write the data to file condinuously there.
I see in your instructions you are telling someone to hit the Abort button to stop execution of the code.  That is always a bad idea.  You should design your program as a state machine where you have different states for running and setting up different parameters.  A user should never hit the Abort button  (you will fail to clean up tasks properly.)  And they really should never need to hit the run button either once the application is compiled into an executable.

  • Firefox gets slower and slower over time.

I have been using firefox for some time, Like it better than Safari generally, but I've noticed (and it has gotten worse with 3.6.x) that if you leave FF running for extended periods of time it gets slower and slower, does not seem to matter if add-ons are installed or not, and it gets REALLY bad after going in and out of flash based apps/games a couple times. It is not just a mac problem as this behaviour also happens on windows xp or newer, but windows OS needs to be rebooted daily anyways so most people won't notice.

Proceed with [[Basic Troubleshooting]] first of all.
You could also try running Firefox in [[Safe Mode]]. If it functions properly in that configuration, then one of your add-ons is the culprit.

  • WLAN getting slower over time.

If I download arch iso from my local server via scp, the connection begins with a speed of 2-3 MB/s, and slows permanently down until it reached 80Kb/s. If I do the same over Fast Ethernet, I get  constant 11.3 MB/s. I have this problem on my router (701V) as well as on my accesspoint (WL0110), with wicd as well as with networkmanager. Hence I guess it is a driver problem.
I dont have any clue on how to solve this problem. Here some Info. Please ask if you need more.

This is what I believe is happening.  I don't see what I might not be freeing.  I remove all event listeners and remove the TextFields from the display list.  Is there anything else I need to do?
Currently I am displaying the frame rate.  I see a frame rate starting at 30 and going down to 8 after several hours.
I also just started to display the memory:
    tf.text = Number( System.totalMemory / 1024 / 1024 ).toFixed( 2 ) +' Mb';
I am interested to see if when the FPS goes down to < 10, if the memory is much larger.
Are there any tools that might help debug what might be happening?

  • Index Organized Table getting slow over time

    Hello,
I recently discovered a problem in our our production environment:
We use an IOT to store search results in the form of primary keys (and additional data). This results in an excessive amount of INSERTs and DELETEs (the application is mainly a research tool). After some time, some statements on the IOT like SELECT COUNT(*) (optimizer using INDEX FAST FULL SCAN) take longer and longer, however the IOT index is used correctly by the optimizer and SELECTs which specify WHERE primk... (optimizer using INDEX RANGE SCAN) are executed with best performance.
It seems that the IOT somehow gets fragmented or unbalanced. Now my question ist, what's would be the best approach against that problem.
Would a daily ALTER TABLE ... MOVE ONLINE; be a good solution for example? Is this common practice with high volatile IOTs in 24x7 production environments?
Are there any better solutions for storing temporary search results?
    Looking forward for your comments.
    -sd

    In addition to above mentioning...
Have you verified the distribution of IOT?
Like "ANALYZE INDEX .... VALIDATE STRUCTURE"? or "DBMS_STATS.GATHER_TABLE_STATS"?
It's natural that your full table scan(index fast full scan) gets slower in case that your IOT is getting bigger.
If you have lots of free leaf nodes, moving index will be beneficial although moving itself should be abvoided on busy time.
You also need to do sql trace and tkprof to measure how much workload your IOT is making.

  • Firefox for Android becomes painfully slow over time. Clearing data fixes, but erases bookmarks. Where is the "Reset" function ??

After a fresh install, Firefox loads websites very fast with almost no lag. After a few weeks, it becomes slower and slower. Getting to the point where it wil take aboit 20 seconds to display the Top Sites/Bookmarks window. Then sometimes opening a page, the loading circle stops moving and it freezes the phone. After about 15 seconds everything works again. The only way I found to fix this horrendous problem is to go into control panel for Firefox and Clear Data. I dont like doing that because I lose all of my bookmarks. It seems the Cache always shows "0 bytes" so there never is nothing to clear out. I would like to know where this "Reset" function is for Android. I see they have it for Windows versions..but what about Android?
My phone is an HTC Rezound running stock Android 4.0.3
    Thanks in advance.

Bruce,<br/>whilst waiting for Roland to get back you may wish to try this
Enter into the address bar ''about:memory'' you get interactive dynamic information about memory usage, and maybe also ''about:compartments'' .
That should at least help you see where the memory is going to.

  • My system.. specs.. it's  running slow at times

Okay the program is running better but still runs low on memory after a hour or so of use. It stumbles along at times..last night it gave me the dreaded had to shut down message.. I did the recommended Defrag, temp files cleaning etc...A friend with this program thought maybe the Graphics card was a bit weak it's a 128mb nvidia geforce 8300 gs.... so here's my machine..windows XP purchased Feb of this year.. Dell 530 inspirion,320g hard drive,128mb nvidia geforce 8300 gs graphics card, 3 gigs of Ram, 21" moniter, Sp2 What do you folks think? thanks again..

Your graphics card should be fine... PE does not make use of the graphics card GPU. The minimum computer requirements will depend on what type of sources files are you editing? Do you have any large resolution photos in your project? And how long is your project... these will impact the preformance of PE.

  • IMac link to 2Wire gateway gets slower over time

    Hi All,
For the last couple of months I've had a situation where the airport signal drops off (and my download speed drops accordingly). When I start up I get "5 bars" from the wireless router. Then speed will drop, or pages fail to load, and I notice that Im getting just 1 or 2 bars. If I turn Airport off, then back on, it comes back at full strength and works for a while. The DSL router is a 2wire (ATT) that otherwise seems to work fine. I don't see much that I can adjust or configure with Airport or the IMac. The router is not too far away as the crow flies, but its a floor below. My mac mini and the wifes laptop seem pretty good. What can interfere with the signal. Also is the 801.1x security only, or something that yields stronger connections? THe online help for setting up the 801 in Airport was clear as mud. Suggestions? Thanks!

This is what I believe is happening.  I don't see what I might not be freeing.  I remove all event listeners and remove the TextFields from the display list.  Is there anything else I need to do?
Currently I am displaying the frame rate.  I see a frame rate starting at 30 and going down to 8 after several hours.
I also just started to display the memory:
    tf.text = Number( System.totalMemory / 1024 / 1024 ).toFixed( 2 ) +' Mb';
I am interested to see if when the FPS goes down to < 10, if the memory is much larger.
Are there any tools that might help debug what might be happening?

  • Time Capsule Wi-Fi slows down over time

    Hi,
My Time Capsule 2 TB (running firmware 7.4.2, which is the latest version for my model Time Capsule) has an annoying habit of running slower and slower over time, eventually requiring a restart...
It becomes worse and worse gradually. At some point, transfer rates get very slow, websites take ages to load, connections even start to drop... and that's when people connected to my network start asking: "What the %($) is going on?". I then restart the Time Capsule, and everything is back to normal (for a while).
This repeats about once every month. I'm not satisfied with one month of continuous uptime on a Wi-Fi base station... I'm used to such devices running for a year or two before they may eventually require a reboot.
Has anyone else had this problem? Should I try to exchange the Time Capsule for the new model (running firmware 7.5.1)? It seems like Apple isn't planning to release a firmware update for the older model, even though it's still under warranty and obviously has a few glitches...
    Tim

I've got this exact same problem with the older Time Capsule. Mine drops to around 10% of the original speed over time. Mine requires a reboot too.
I was thinking of buying a new one, thanks for saving my money.

  • Iphoto began running slow right after the last update. I'm working with raw files. when I have an open moving from photo to photo some times it slows way down, Never did prior to last update. Thanks

iphoto is running slow at times. This never happened until I installed the the last update. The program gets slow when I have an event open moving with the arrows back and forth.  It doesn't make a difference in full screen or smaller

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import a number of raw image files and test to see if the same problem persists.
