Azure SQL DB Basic Edition Preview: "Session Request Limit Reached" Stuck and Doesn't Clear - SQL DB Bug?

Edit: I have updated the below to reflect that it took four hours for the database to unblock. This looks like a bug to me. SQL Server seemed to believe there were 30 running sessions with open requests nearly four hours after the client
side connections were terminated (and thus in the process blocking SQL Server from accepting new connections).
Problem
I am running a preview "Basic" edition SQL DB and have hit a problem with Azure SQL DB blocking database access for an extended time period.
I was running a test, which was running normally for several hours (loading small batches of data), then suddenly lots of connection timeouts (error type 1 below).  My workload was constant over the whole test - but if the server was suddenly under
pressure, I accept this might happen - no problem with me so far.
Upon retrying, the errors then changed to request limit exceeded (error type 2 below).
I am surprised I hit the limit in the first place, since the test code closes the SQL Connection on a timeout error and reopens.  (In C#, the code is wrapped in a using{} to ensure prompt connection closure).  Still, perhaps the amount of concurrent
work on the server did momentarily hit this limit.  Perhaps fair enough on this point too.
BUT:  Surprisingly, nearly four hours later, I was still unable to connect to the database - it was refusing new connections.  Either from my worker role or from the Azure Management Website.  The Management Window, upon trying to connect,
failed with exactly the same text as error type 2 below.
Further, sys.resource_stats (from the master db, which is still accessible) is reporting that there were 30 active sessions, 30 active workers (see extract below) for four afters after the test ended.  Even though during this time period the Azure Cloud
Service that was generating the SQL requests was stopped too (so the client side of any open requests were long since dead).  Also,
the CPU, Log Write and Phys Data Read columns in sys.resource_stats are all showing 0 for the four hours after the test ended.  This to me suggests a fault condition that isn't clearing server-side.
Why was the database unavailable for four hours?  Why did Azure believe that there were 30 open requests? (each request was an insert of 1000 rows, each of 400 bytes, i.e. pretty small so no way should they take this long to process).
PS.  To be clear, none of the above is a complaint.  I completely accept that the service in in preview, different SLA, etc.  I am writing to a) check that I haven't missed anything and b) if this is a bug, to report it.
Appendix
Error Type 1
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException:  Timeout expired.  The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.
Error Type 2
SqlException: Resource ID : 1. The request limit for the database is 30 and has been reached. See 'http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=267637' for assistance.
Metrics
The following is an extract from sys.resource_stats for the affected time period.  SQL Server seems to wrongly believe/report that there are 30 pending requests between 6:20 and 10:45.  It thus blocks any further requests during this time.  There
were NO client connections during this time, either new or previously opened.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for testing the new Basic edition and for reporting this issue. Without some more investigation it is hard to tell what exactly has happened here.
To be able to take a closer look I would need some more information from you. Could you please reach out to me via email (firstname DOT lastname AT microsoft DOT com)? I will then let you know what additional information we and will kick-off
the investigation.
Thanks,
Jan

  • PS suddenly requests a licence number and doesn't work anymore.

I have a PS + Lightroom abo with monthly payments. I just paid the fee for May. However today my PS Installation told me that I have only a demo Version and requested a licence number (which I do not have). I have a valid Adobe account where I can login with used ID and pw. I can check all data, everything seems fine. When I try to call the Adobe Creative Cloud Client on my PC the same User ID and PW is not accepted. The same happens if I try to download PS again.
This is very annoying and strange.
    Can anybody help me?
    regards
    Herbert

Sorry, the hint was not helpful .:-(
I checked the Internet Connection (OK), access to secure sites (OK), certificate (OK), hosts file, Access to the Adobe servers. All fine. PS still behaves like a 30-day test Installation. It worked fine since the Installation end of March.  The Adobe Creative Cloud Client on my computer still refuses the (valid!) User ID and PW (after ID, PW and return, it changes back to the Login Screen).

  • Aperture got stuck while editing a photo in full screen mode and doesn't respond to commands

How do I stop Aperture when it is completely stuck and will not even respond to alt-cmd-esc?

then use option + command  Delete to force quit Aperture.
Force quitting is to be avoided if possible, since it can corrupt the Aperture Library and the User preferences file or other settings.
If Aperture seems to be stuck and unresponsive, quite often it is a deadlock in the graphical user interface, but the application itself still may respond to the "Terminate" signal, send by other processes:
Select the Aperture Dock icon, ctrl-click and select "Quit!
Select "Restart" from the     Apple-menu.
Or use the Terminal to send a Terminate-Signal:
Launch "Activity Monitor" (from Applications > Utilities) and find the Process ID of Aperture (PID, in the first column)
Open a Terminal and type in:
    kill -TERM Aperture's PID
Only if all these safer measures don't work, then use Force Quit on a database program like Aperture, but be prepared to run an "Aperture Library First Aid" afterwards, if you see signs of a corrupted library.

  • SQL Server Standard Edition with Sharepoint 2013 Enterprise

    Hi there,
I need some help figuring out what will be the ideal SQL Server Standard Edition that can run all features for SharePoint 2013 Enterprise Edition. I ordered CAL licenses for a Sharepoint 2013 Enterprise Server (Supports 500 users). Now I need to find out
if it is worth upgrading SQL server to the following:
Upgrade to SQL Server Standard R2 2012 or upgrade to SQL Server Standard 2014? Basically, I am looking for the pros and cons?
    -Esteban
Microsoft manager to programmer: You start coding. I'll go find out what they want ...

    Hello,
PowerPivot for SharePoint is a feature available only if SQL Server Enterprise Edition and Business Intelligence Edition is used. Reporting Services of SQL Server Standard has also some limitations that will impact SharePoint 2013.
Additionally, SQL Server Standard Edition do not offer AlwaysON, database snapshots and online index rebuild.
To me, the biggest difference between SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition and SQL Server 2014 Standard Edition is that SQL 2014 Standard now supports 128 GB of RAM. SQL Server 2012 Standard is limited to 64 GB.

    Hope this helps.

  • Automize SQL TRACE for a selected session

    Hi,
Should I automize the process of SQL Tracing for a particular session of our choice?
Let’s say when there are several sessions, and we want to select the particular session for SQL TRACING, then the SQL tracing for that session enable via running a routine.
I used AFTER LOGON trigger for enabling SQL trace, but using this approach enable SQL TRACING all the sessions.
My Logon Trigger for enabling SQL Tracing:
    create or replace trigger LOGON_SQL_TRACE
    after logon on database
    begin
    execute immediate
    'alter session set sql_trace=true';
    end;
I want to use a perfect routine that first get the sid, serial# or username etc. from V$session, V$process or else, and then enable the SQL TRACING for the selected session.
Like SYS.DBMS.SYSTEM.SET_SQL_TRACE_IN_SESSION package is available for doing that or may be some others as well.
But how should we use these packages or other SQL tracing commands in a routine, which we can use for, enable SQL Tracing implicitly.
    Any ideas will be great.
    Bill

    SYS.DBMS.SYSTEM.SET_SQL_TRACE_IN_SESSION is just fine.
You can get the SID and SERIAL# from v$session; you just have to know the username, osmachine, the OS process, ...

  • Downgrade SQL Server 2008 Enterprise to SQL Server2008 Standard Edition

I would like to know from fourm users, what are the necessary steps I would take care for above mentioned activity and also please let me know best suitable option for Production.
    SNS

You can't do in-place downgrade. You need to go with backup -> uninstall ent -> install std -> bring it to same patch -> restore databases approach.
You need to make sure that there is not enterprise only feature used else you can't restore database on standard.

Balmukund's answer above is the Microsoft supported route for doing a downgrade of an instance of SQL Server.  However, before you do this, you need to query the sys.dm_db_persisted_sku_fearures DMV in each of your user databases to make certain that
you don't have any Enterprise features in use that would block your ability to restore a database onto Standard Edition.
No matter what you are going to have to do an uninstall and reinstall of the SQL Server instance to downgrade the SKU.  However, you can save yourself some time and the headache of trying to restore the system databases if you are careful about what
you do.  I have done a couple of SKU downgrades in the past and the easiest way to do it, and I am not saying this is the Microsoft supported way but that it works if done correctly, is to:
Take a good backup of all of your databases (system and user).
Run SELECT @@VERSION and note the specific build number of SQL Server that you are currently on.
Shut down your existing instance of SQL Server.
Copy the master, model, and msdb database files (both mdf and ldf), don't move them copy them, from the current location to a new folder that you mark as readonly.
Uninstall SQL Server from the system.
    Reboot the server.
    Install SQL Server Standard Edition.
Apply the necessary Service Pack and/or Cumulative Updates to bring the instance up to your previous build number.
    Shutdown SQL Server.
Copy the master, model, and msdb database files (both mdf and ldf) from the folder you saved them in to the correct location for the new install and remove the readonly flag from the files, and change the file ACL's so that the SQL Service account has Full
    Control over the files.
Startup SQL Server and if you did it correctly it will startup and be exactly where you were before you made any changes, with all of your user databaes online and you should be ready to let applications connect and resume operations.
If you screw something up in the above, you still have your backups and you can run setup to rebuild the system databases and then go about following the Microsoft supported path for restoring the system databases and then user databases into the system
to bring it online.  Essentially the file copy is no different that what would occur through attach/detach you are just doing it with system databases which is not supported, but it does work.  The key is to have your backups from before you do anything
so you have the supported route available if you encounter an issue.  The only issue I have ever had doing this set of steps is that I didn't set the file ACL's correctly and the database engine threw Access Denied errors and failed to start until I fixed
the ACL's correctly.  This can save you many hours of frustration and downtime trying to restore everything since the database files are already there and it is just some small copy operations to put them where you need them to be.
Balmukund, feel free to beat me over the head for suggesting a non-supported path. :-)

  • Sql Server Web Edition Reporting Services errors when trying to connect to Windows Azure SQL

I am using a preconfigured image from the Azure VM Gallery to create a VM.
    --> Sql Server 2012 SP1 Web running under Windows Server 2008 R2
After configuring Reporting Services I get the following error when trying to run a report that connects to my Azure SQL db.
An error has occurred during report processing. (rsProcessingAborted)
An attempt has been made to use a data extension 'SQLAZURE' that is either not registered for this report server or is not supported in this edition of Reporting Services. (rsDataExtensionNotFound)
On the VM using SSMS I can connect to the Azure SQL db.  On the VM in Report Builder when I define a connection I get a similar error to the one above when I test that connection.  I am using Microsoft Azure SQL as the data source type.
Interestingly in Report Builder, if I proceed past the connection definition, I can see the tables from my Azure SQL db in the dataset definition page.
One more note.  If I use a different image from the Gallery (Sql Server 2012 Standard SP1 on Windows Server 2012) my report builder connection works and the reports run fine.  I believe that the Azure documentation says that Sql Server Web edition
is an acceptable choice for the SSRS on VM for reporting.
    Any thoughts or suggestions?
    Thanks -- Tom Reilly

    Hello,
A VM with SQL Server 2008 R2 or 2012 supports all Reporting Services features, including all supported data sources, customization and extensibility, and scheduled report execution and delivery.
Did you run the report in Report Manager,or preview the report in Report Builder? Which version of the Report Builder you installed in the Windows Azure VM? SQL Reporting does not support reports created from Report Builder 1.0 or 2.0. You can create reports
using Report Builder 3.0 and then upload the reports.
What's more, please also check the database source credential of the report.

Help me please am stuch and can't move on ... Please guide me.
    Thanks
    Lutchumaya

    Hi Lutchumaya,
I dont think these two errors have the same reason. You probably missed one or two little details when performing the tutorial.
For the second error, it seems than you are trying to create a new service history with lineNo = null, search in the tuto where and how fixing this value (using a java function).
For the first one, it's not easy. You could have an error in the SREdit.java class, but if it works with another logged in user?
Maybe the best way is that you try to use one of the endOfChapter package proposed by the tutorial. Run it, then if it runs correctly compare each file with these you developed beginning by SREdit.java and SREdit.jspx. If it doesn't run, you probably missed one of the embedded OC4J settings.
    Good luck,
    Tif
PS: please, next time post only the 4 or 5 first line of your error message (other error lines are trigged in cascade by the first one), probably more people will read them.

  • Launching a Preview Session Outside the ATG Business Control Center

I have setup a remote preview server on ATG 10.1.1. Everything works great when viewing it inside the BCC however I’m wondering how to access the preview server outside the BCC. According to the ATG documentation, it sounds like that’s possible. The ATG docs state:
“Users can preview project asset changes outside the framework of the Business Control Center. For example, you might want employees or outside reviewers who do not have access to the Business Control Center to evaluate changes to a Web application while it undergoes development. In this case, you can enable preview on servers that do not have the Business Control Center installed, then give reviewers URLs to the launch pages on these servers. They can invoke these URLs from any browser window.
Note: Users who are not logged into the Business Control Center can invoke preview sessions only with URLs to a server where the Business Control Center is not running. In order to avoid security breaches, URLs to preview sessions on the Business Control Center server are blocked.”
This is the only information I found in the documentation that talks about viewing preview outside the BCC. Based on this limited information, there are a lot of questions I have about how this actually works.
    1. Any attempt to hit any page on my remote preview server outside the BCC, I see the following exception:
“ERROR [PreviewProfileRequestProcessor] An attempt was made to preview a project without logging in as a user with access to publishing assets. If you are running a local preview instance, the preview URLs registered with the PreviewURLManager may be misconfigured. Ensure that the preview URLs are configured with the same host and domain name used to access the BCC server. This preview request URL is: http://localhost:8280/sample_catalog/index.jsp. If you are running a remote preview instance, the Preview feature does not support remote preview on servers running the BCC. Ensure that the remote preview instance is not running any of the BCC related modules. If you received this error and did not try to perform a remote preview, then you may need to disable preview in the current web application by setting the atg.preview context parameter to false in the webapps web.xml file.”
I am not running the BCC on this instance so I’m not sure why I am seeing this. Is there something configuration I'm missing here?
    2. I don’t understand where these urls would come from that a reviewer would use to preview the application. There is no "remote preview url" when previewing a page from within the BCC to copy and send to a reviewer so how would a BCC user send a url to a reviewer?
    3. Assuming the reviewing knew which page to hit in the remote preview server, how would that page use the assets from a project? Should the project id of the project be include as a param to the url?
    - Michael

Shaik, if only it was that simple :( Do you have much experience working with remote preview or are you just guessing here like I have been? In order to help clarify my post though, here is the scenario that describes the basis for my questions:
A business user is working on a project within Merchandising of the BCC
    1.     The user makes a change to a category
    2.     The user clicks the Preview Button on the tool bar
    3.     The system displays the Preview launcher screen
    4.     The user selects a pre-configured profile user and page for the preview session
    5.     The user clicks the Flexed based launch button
    6.     The application displays within the context of the BCC browser/tab
    7.     The business user would like to send that url to a reviewer who does not have access to login to the BCC
What happens from step 6 is that a giant iframe launches from within the context of the BCC browser/tab. If you are using remote preview, it is still an iframe and still displays within the context of the BCC browser/tab, the only difference is that the BCC is proxying information to the preview instance in order to initialize the preview session to display the application in the context of the business user’s project. The url the user sees in the browser is the url for the BCC, not the remote preview server. Because the UI for Merchandising and Preview is built using Flex, there is no way to click on the Preview button to open it up in another tab or browser. The only way your suggestion would work is if there is a way to configure the Flex UI to have it open up preview in a new browser/tab which I doubt is possible.
I hope this helps better explain my post. With that said though, this brings me back to my original questions.

  • SQL Server Web Edition for SharePoint 2013

    Dear Expert,
I'm not sure SQL Server Web Edition is ok for SharePoint Server 2013 or not. If I do in On-Premise or Azure.
    Please suggestion.

There is no specific document that specifies that Web edition is supported.  However, if you look at the requirements list for SharePoint 2013 you will notice that it specifies that it must be either SQL server 2008 r2  with SP1 or SQL 2012.
It also specifies the 64 bit version.  But it doesn't specify a specific edition.  That and the fact that it will run on SQL Express suggests that it will run on any edition of SQL as long as its 64 bit and a late enough release.

  • System process running queries every 25 seconds against SQL 2012 Developer Edition

While debugging a long running stored procedure I wanted to include SP:stmtStarting and SP:stmtCompleted.
I noticed that every 25 seconds I was getting multiple queries against every database on my local server like:
    select table_id, item_guid, oplsn_fseqno, oplsn_bOffset, oplsn_slotid
from [dbname].[sys].[filetable_updates_random_number] with (readpast) order by table_id
    From different sid's each time.
While searching I saw that sometimes this may had to do with always on availability or filestream support but this is not my case since I don't use any of these features. This is a single instance installation.
The following queries return no rows.
    SELECT * FROM sys.filetables;
    GO
    SELECT * FROM sys.tables WHERE is_filetable = 1;
    GO
    @@version returns:
    Microsoft SQL Server 2012 (SP1) - 11.0.3401.0 (X64)

    Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation
    Developer Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.2 <X64> (Build 9200: )
This may be useful but I also have SQL Server 2014 Developer Edition installed but also without always on availability / filestream enabled.

Not yet, believe it or not, I've been working with them for nearly a month to try to figure this out.  Basically, what we found with our servers is that it's fine until it hits max memory or close to it.  When it hits max memory there
should be the memory cleanup operations that occur, and when they start it just can't clean up the memory.  The memory cleanup operations just keep getting ran over and over which causes the high CPU to sit there even when users aren't on the system.
Eventually performance degrades and then eventually the SQL Server service runs out of available memory and the service restarts / crashes.  We (Microsoft) thinks they narrowed it down to 1 thing which is that it's a UserStore_SchemaMgr clerk
which continues to grow and never shrinks.
Here are a few things to try first:
    1) Make sure your databases are corruption free (do a DBCC CHECKDB) on all databases and make sure there is no corruption.  If there is then repair it and reboot the server.
    2) Install this hotfix (I'm doing this tonight, so I don't know if this fixes it yet, I have to do this off hours)
    http://support2.microsoft.com/kb/2904100
    3) If no corruption exists from #1, run this: DBCC MEMORYSTATUS.  (Change the query type to have the results output as text from the top toolbar)  Then do Edit, Find and search for UserStore_SchemaMgr.
It's measured in KB, so you have to divide that number by 1024 for MB and 1024/1024 for GB.  In our case we have it going into the GB's.  I have a Windows 2008 R2 SQL Server that this runs at about 8 MB.  On our 2012 server it's running at
    15 GB.
This is what we're trying to work on now.  If you don't mind, let me know what you find, because I've been spending a ton of time on this with them and I think it's a bug, however we are having a tough time finding it.
    Thanks.
