Back Up in Essbase

Dear All,
Could you plz tell me, how to back up the metadata & data for one application in Essbase.
Regards,
Naresh R.

Whether it's on windows or unix, the principle is the same. I recommend you to read the documentation recommended by John.
From version 11.1.1.3, you can have automated backup.
For automated backup, you can refer to the Essbase Technical Reference, look for:
TRANSACTIONLOGDATALOADARCHIVE and TRANSACTIONLOGLOCATION in the essbase.cfg section.
And you need to use Maxl script to initiate the backup and recovery:
- For example to backup: alter database Sample.Basic force archive to file '/Hyperion/backupfile.arc';
- For example to restore: alter database Sample.Basic force restore from file '/Hyperion/backupfile.arc';
Refer to the docs for more detail:
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E12825_01/epm.111/esb_techref/maxl_altdb.htm
Manual Backup:
1. Full backup: --> I personally not a fan of this. Please test before you implement to make sure it works.
- Execute Maxl to BeginArchive the database
- Then backup the entire App directory.
- Execute Maxl to EndArchive the database
--> To restore, stop the app and then recover the entire directory from Backup.
--> If the data files are in different directory, make sure this gets backup too.
2. Selective backup:
- Execute Maxl to BeginArchive the database
- Backup .otl, .rul, .csc, .rep and any other independent object which you want to backup, e.g. .atx, .alg, .olg, .sel, .eqd
- Export level 0 or export input level or full export the database
- Execute End Archive to the database
--> To restore, stop the application.
--> You can recover the objects you want to recover, for example, outline, rule, calc script etc.
--> Start the app, and you can clear the existing data and re-import the data from backup, then run aggregation afterwards
--> with this one, you can create a blank app, which blank database, then recover to this newly created database.
You have several choices here, implement which you think is better for your objective.
I personally never use the automated backup and use the selective manual backup.

KumarIf you just want to backup the Essbase database, you may shutdown the Essbase services and then copy all files under the database folder.
For metadata kept in SQL server, you may need to have a separate database backup.

  • Write Back Capability in Essbase

    Dear All,
I read some where BSO has a direct write-back capability which is not possible in ASO, correct me if i'm wrong. Now my doubt is What is write back capability.

'Write-back' refers to the ability of end-users to send values directly to the cube from a combined read / write interface such as the Essbase Excel Add-In, Smart View, Dodeca, Planning etc. A user can look at a value retrieved from the cube, decide for whatever reason that he or she wishes to change it, enter a new value and 'write it back'.
This is in contrast to data loaded (usually as part of a batch process) from an external system.
ASO is one of the two data storage mechanisms available in Essbase - it stands for 'Aggregate Storage Option'. As John said, write back to ASO cubes is only possible at 'level zero', and this feature was not introduced until version 9.3.1. If you aren't clear what 'level zero' means, I suggest reading this section of the Database Administrator's Guide: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E17236_01/epm.1112/esb_dbag/frameset.htm?dinconc.html

  • Essbase Cube Linking With Sql

    Hi,experts!!!!!!!
I have Essbase Studio From Epm 11.1.2.1 Version, the thing is that i have to link the Essbase cube to sql,can you suggest any solutions or can just give me info about drill back method in essbase studio...

The documentation on drill-through is a good place to start http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17236_01/epm.1112/est_user/ch17.html

  • EssBase Studio Hierarchy Issues

How can I add a dimension or alternate hierachy to an existing Essbase cube without having to re-create the model and reset all of the dimension properties? I am using 11.1.3.

Are the member properties stored in a table anywhere where you can copy the table back into the recreated Essbase model? Or would it be better to extract the outline with the member properties and save the file as a datasource and attach it to the minischema? That way we could load the member properties back into the Essbase model w/o having to update all of the members w/in the dimensions.

  • Essbase server

    Hi ,
Suppose , if Essbase server software is gone on any system , how can we recover already existing applications & databases on that server.
some times i am facing this problem on my vista system(personal sys).

As Sean mentioned, you can recover from the Essbase folder if it is not removed with your server.
From what you are saying, I believe you have the server installed in your machine and somehow Essbase is gone, did you uninstall Essbase or you have a problem starting Essbase, it could be corrupted or somehow you deleted some files. if I were you, I'd back up the App folder, reinstall Essbase, re-create all applications you need to restore (without databases) replace each application folder by the one from back up, restart Essbase and you should be fine.

  • Impact of write-back on large data cubes(Both ASO and BSO)

    Hi All,
We are in the phase of designing the Essbase Cubes(both ASO and BSO).
Has anyone encountered issues performing a write-back on large Essbase data Cubes?
    With Regards,
    Madhan

    Hi,
Do you mean data load from a flat file or sql or simply lock and send? An estimate size of your record set would also help.
I get 30 million records into an ASO cube in about 5 minutes from SQL using load rules. This is in 11.1.2.1.
    Thanks,
    Nathan

  • Tools for Web data entry to Essbase&Relational

I am looking for tools that will allow to write back data into Essbase as well as to Relational database.

The offerings from Hyperion in terms of Hyperion Analzyer and Hyperion Reports both offer reporting capabilities for relational and can write back to Essbase however they can't write back to relational. My best guess would be to look at a third party tool.A first start maybe Alphablox (www.alphablox.com). This offers relational and OLAP functionality although I am unaware of its relational write back - beware this product is also not 'out of the box'.A second product to check out might be Arcplan (www.arcplan.com). Again do not know about its ability to write back to relational but worth checking out.Hope this helps.Paul ArmitageAnalitica Ltd.www.analitica.co.uk

  • Upgrading Essbase 9.3.1.3 32-bit to 64-bit

We currently have the 32-bit version of Essbase 9.3.1.2 along with Oracle BI 10.1.3.4 running on a 64-bit Windows 2003 OS. We want to upgrade to 64-bit Essbase 9.3.1.2. Do we need to uninstall the 32-bit and install the 64-bit Essbase? If we do this, will it affect the OBI installation? Will I need to uninstall and reinstall OBI?
    Thanks in advance,
    Terri

You should just be able to uninstall and then install essbase again (reboot the machine after you have uninstalled), I would make sure you have backed up your essbase applications.
OBIEE is just using the essbase client so you shouldn't need to install again.

  • MaxL Error Codes

    Hi,
We have many MaxL scripts to load, calculate, export databases etc.... The client wants more precise error messages in the emails the scripts send out to help them decipher what the problem may be in case of a WARNING or ERROR. Is there a list of all possible error codes MaxL would create in the .log? Here's an example of one that is created by changing a member name in source file to make it fail.
WARNING - 1241114 - There were errors, look in C:\Automation\Dev\Logs\Revenue\revload.err.
I'm trying to avoid having to think of every possible type of failure and making it fail on purpose to capture these errors. Was hoping there is a list of all that I could reference?

There are two kinds of errors in MaxL -- command errors and errors that Essbase passes back.
The Essbase data load error you've identified is of the latter type and is not going to get trapped by MaxL's iferror. Unfortunately.
For errors that MaxL can trap (I bet you know the below, but there is something new in 11.1.2.x that's worth reviewing) there are now unique error codes which, I suppose, is what you don't want to do, but it's still an interesting function.
Check out this for a general overview of branching on error:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E17236_01/epm.1112/esb_tech_ref/maxl_commands_errs.html
And of course there's the new Exit function that allows you to pass an error code:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E17236_01/epm.1112/esb_tech_ref/frameset.htm?maxl_commands_exit.html
^^^That's pretty cool and I need to write up a blog post on it, to teach myself to use it if nothing else.

  • How to load data to attribute dimension

    hi gurus,
    I have two questions:
    1. could I enter data into attribute dimension using SmartView?
    2. how could i load data into attribute dimension using load rules?
    Regards,
    Daniel

    Hi,
    1.
You can't send data back into Essbase if your POV has an attribute specified. The attribute will calculate (by default it does a sum) your POV dynamically and only bring back data which has that attribute assigned to it.
If you want to send data back into Essbase then the easiest way would be to keep the same POV and just remove the reference to the attribute. Smartview will then let you send data back into the Essbase cube.
    2.
Same answer as point 1. Attributes are ways of adding more detail to members that already exist. You dont' load data into the attribute, you load data into the member that the attribute is assigned to.
    Hope this helps,
    Gee

  • Unregister EAS from Shared Services

    Hi Together,
I've a problem that an installation over an existing installation (same version) registered my eas to shared services what I don't want to have.
I red in the documentation of EAS that the backwords way isn't possible.
Somebody got a trick to bring EAS back to native security?
    Thank you very much
    //Thomas

    Hi,
Your question is not clear. First of all, EAS will not be in native security mode. Essbase will be native security mode. From my undrestanding, I think you have externalized essbase security to shared services. If you want to bring that security back to native essbase, then:
    1. Stop essbase server.
    2. Go to $HyperionHome/AnalyticServices/bin
    3. rename the existing Essbase.sec to Essbase.sec.X
    4. copy essbase.bak_preUPM as Essbase.sec
    5. Start essbase server.
    Hope this helps!

  • Maximum Number of Columns Error

Okay, I've searched the discussion groups and did not see an answer to this so if anybody can help, it would be greatly appreciated. I have a user trying to pull back numbers from Essbase to an Excel spreadsheet and is getting "Maximum number of columns [1] exceeded [3].There is no Essbase error message associated with the error. I can pull back the same data on my set and do not get the error. Any help......thanks.

I have to disagree with the last comment; there is no "patch" for Hyperion to send. It's a simple version incompatibility. This situation usually occurs when you either upgrade the Essbase version or Excel, usually Essbase. The problem is that the "old" version of the Add-In isn't compatible with the new Essbase kernel, or in some cases the Excel version.<BR><BR>Try this:<BR><BR>In Excel, uncheck the <b>OLAP Server DLL</b> checkbox and install it again. To do so, browse to the server's hard drive, then to the ...\hyperion\essbase\bin directory and select the <b>Essexcln.xll</b> file. This will get a new copy of the Add-in from the server.<BR><BR>This situation has also occurred when version 6 Essbase is used with Excel 2003 and there's a different solution for that. If the above doesn't work, provide me with the Essbase version and the Excel version, along with what (if anything) has recently changed and I'll field it from there.

  • Planning Performance issue

    Hi,
We are using 11.1.1.3 on single server environment. We have 16 GB Ram and not more than 3-4 concurrent users.
Our system is working very slow when we save data. There are some heavy rules attached to the forms which take ages to execute.
What i noticed is that after some time the cache in the essbase has reached to the maximum so i restart the essbase service and clear the cache.
Once i clear the cache the system performance is better but only till the time the maximum cache limit is reached.
We cannot use the practise of starting and stopping the services every now and then.
Is there any best practices defined for optimizing the system performance and cache setting. I am not also sure about if any changes required to be made into .cfg also. also any documentation for the same would be helpful.
Please help as this is urgent.

Essbase Tuning Guide For Planning Applications [ID 797362.1]
Modified 05-OCT-2010 Type HOWTO Status PUBLISHED
    In this Document
    Goal
    Solution
    1. Block size:
    2. Virtual memory:
    3. Caches:
    4. Disk space:
    Applies to:
    Hyperion Planning - Version: 4.1.0.0.00 to 11.1.2.0.00 - Release: 4.1 to 11.1
Information in this document applies to any platform.
    Goal
Tuning Essbase for use with Planning in order to improve performance and avoid errors arising from a lack of resources when running Business Rules and Calculation Scripts.
    Solution
The following are basic guidelines for Essbase tuning that are intended to cover the use of Essbase with Planning applications. There is a great deal more that can be customized and tuned in Essbase that is not covered here. See the official Essbase documentation for more details.
To improve performance go through each of the suggested optimizations below and then test to see where the most progress is made. Always remember to back up your Essbase data before making any changes.
    1. Block size:
The recommended block size is between 8Kb and 100Kb. The only way to alter block size is to change sparse dimensions to dense or vice versa. Changing a dense dimension to sparse will reduce block size and increase the overall number of blocks. See the Planning documentation for more information on setting dimensions to be dense or sparse.
    2. Virtual memory:
Recommended virtual memory setting (for Windows systems): 2 to 3 times the RAM available. 1.5 times the RAM on older systems.
    3. Caches:
    Index Cache:
    Minimum: 1 Mb
    Default: 10 Mb
Recommended: combined size of all ESS*.IND files if possible; otherwise as large as possible given the available RAM.
The .IND files are found on the Essbase server under \app\<appname>\<dbname>. The size of the .IND files are also visible from the "Storage" tab of the database properties in the EAS console.
    Data File Cache:
    Minimum: 8 Mb
    Default: 32 Mb
Recommended: combined size of all ESS*.PAG files if possible; otherwise as large as possible given the available RAM, up to a maximum of 2Gb.
The .PAG files are found on the Essbase server under \app\<appname>\<dbname>. The size of the .PAG files are also visible from the "Storage" tab of the database properties in the EAS console.
    Important!
The Data File Cache is not used if the database is buffered rather than direct I/O (Check the “Storage” tab). Since all Planning databases are buffered, and most customers use buffered for native Essbase applications too, this cache setting is usually not relevant. The Data Cache is the setting that matters in most cases (see below).
    Data Cache:
    Minimum: 3 Mb
    Default: 3 Mb
Recommended: 0.125 x combined size of all ESS*.PAG files, if possible, otherwise as large as possible given the available RAM.
Note: a useful indication of the health of the caches can be gained by looking at the “Hit ratio” for the cache on the Statistics tab in EAS. 1.0 is the best possible ratio, lower means lower performance.
    4. Disk space:
The recommended disk space is a minimum of double the combined total of all .IND and .PAG files. You need double the space because you have to have room for a restructure, which will require twice the usual storage space whilst it is ongoing.
