Backing up 2 year old iBook with only 1.98GB of memory left

I recently bought a external HDD(120GB Maxtor OneTouch mini) to back up my 60GB iBook. I am wondering is there any difference between backing-up files using the accompanying software (onetouch manager) and just copying files to the HDD by clicking and dragging? The internal HDD is nearly full and I would like to erase unneeded photos etc. after transferring them to the external HDD but I want to be sure they are secure.
Any advice/ideas would be appreciated, thanks.

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Just one suggestion about the photos--also burn some CD's of them at some point as additional backup. It's best not to entrust anything you care about to a hard drive alone, just in case it might fail some time in the future. And it will give you extra security that your photos have been saved in two different ways..
Good luck!

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Are you posting with it here?
How long has it been since you did any hard drive maintenance?
After six years of use, the hard drive may be so full that it is hampering performance.
    From http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/lackofram.html  :
Determine the available space on your Mac OS X startup disk
In Finder®, select the startup disk icon. For most users, this is Macintosh HD.
    Press the Command-I keyboard shortcut.
The Info window for your startup disk opens. In the General pane, the Capacity, Available (free space), and space Used on your startup disk is displayed, as seen in the following screen shot:
As a general rule of thumb: if the Available space on the Mac OS X startup disk is less than 10 GB, it is time to free some disk space. We suggest 10 GB as an absolute minimum as this is generally the amount of free space required to reinstall Mac OS X 10.5 and earlier via an Archive and Install and still preserve space for VM swap files. More free space is better. For example, users of FileVault may want to retain more free space than that occupied by their encrypted Home folder: disabling FileVault requires free space somewhat greater than the size of your encrypted Home folder.
Even though Mac OS X 10.4 doesn't take as much space as Mac OS X 10.5, you still need to keep quite a bit of free space on your hard drive. A too-full hard drive is a common cause of system slowdowns.
If you find that you do have enough disk space, post back and we will explore other potential problems.

  • I've a ten year-old iMac, with Mac OS X version 10.5.8

    I've a ten year-old iMac, with Mac OS X version 10.5.8 & PowerPC G5 processor
Problem is iTunes, reinstalled recently as 10.6.3; saying needs QuickTime 7.5.5 or higher.

the iTunes 10.6.3 was installed a few days ago by the same tech person selling me the computer about two years ago, when the OS was reinstalled including iTunes.  I've not been able to make iTunes work since the computer was returned.
The tech person is busy and will get back to me eventually, so I'm trying to see if I can do anything by myself.  This shouldn't of happened, though everyone makes mistakes; is what I'm guessing?

  • Why is my new MacBook louder than my 5-year-old iBook?

New 2.4ghz MacBook aluminum owner here. There a very low hum coming from my new MacBook, and it is always there. I don't know if it is the hard drive or the fan, but is is quite obvious in a quiet room.
I compared it to my 2003 plastic iBook, and the iBook is SILENT compared to the new MacBook.
I checked the iStat Pro stats, and the fan is around 2000rpm and the temps are normal.
Anyone else notice this? I love the new machine, but this noise is slightly disappointing, especially compared to a 5-year-old iBook.
    Thanks!

Heat has been an issue with Macs since the first Intel chips in 2006.
That doesn't explain why G5 (PowerPC) towers had to have liquid cooling to keep the temperatures down and the Mac Pro towers (even with eight cores) are okay with just fans... I think you've made a VERY broad, generalized statement that can't be supported.
A G3 iBook is quite different than a G5 tower. The iBook was silent and would run 5.5 hours on a single battery. Of course, it was a nightmare to change the hard drive. The video wasn't shared with the CPU like the Macbook. Unfortunately, said G3 video card also wasn't affixed very well to the logic board either.
My Macbook doesn't quite have the same battery life, sounds like it has a turbocharger when doing video or heavy CPU, and will literally burn my left leg if I set it directly on my lap. There is a reason why Apple stopped selling "laptops" when the Macbooks came out.

  • Connect a macbook pro to on old tv with only aerial cable input

I'm trying to connect a macbook pro to on old tv with only aerial cable input, i have a mini displayport to vga, vga to s-video/phono(yellow) and a phono to aerial, the macbook doesnt recognize it as a display, any suggestions? Can i force it to send the signal?

its not for picture quality the screen is not much bigger, its for an arcade emulation in an exhibit, so i wanted a crt type moniter, and low qulaity output, what input would an old style tv need for it to work?

  • AppleTV audio out to old amp with only analog audio

I'm thinking about getting the Apple TV for both video and for playing my music on my home stereo system. I currently have an old amp with only analog audio capabilities, but the new ATV looks like it only supports digital optical out, and the digital to analog converters I've looked for seem pretty expensive. How can I get the audio from my music collection (iTunes) to play wirelessly through ATV through my amp?
I currently also have an Airport Express which I use for audio, but I was thinking of selling that and just using the ATV since the ATV can essentially do the same thing as the AX with added video benefit. I've seen some threads on streaming audio from the ATV to the AX, but do I really need both? Seems like there should be another way.
I was thinking of connecting the ATV to my TV via HDMI cable for audio, and then using an analog audio out from the TV to my amp. But, if I'm correct, that would only provide me with sound coming from the TV. It wouldn't give sound out from iTunes, for example. Is that right?
    Are there any other options?

Followings are my observations in audio streaming with Apple TV 3 and Airport Express through AirPlay protocol:
-- Apple TV 3 come with only digital audio outputs through HDMI and optical SPDIF outputs. If you connect optical link from the optical output to optical input of any DAC and HDMI cable from the HDMI output to HDMI input on TV set, audio output will be transmitted through both digital outputs. Thus is is not necessary to turn on TV set unless visual feedback is required. There is no audio analog line output for Apple TV 3.
-- AirportExpress come with single combo mini jack (digital + analog) for audio output regardless of old/new models. You can connect either digital optical link (with Mini/Toslink adaptor) to digital input of DAC or analog line cable (inferior) to analog line input of amplifier. When analog line is used, digital-to-analog conversion is done by DAC built into AirportExpress for which do not expect quality is as good as most external DAC models. What do you expect from a single-chip DAC implementation vs standalone DAC models cost few thousand dollars ? Moreover analog line is susceptible to interference more than digital line.
So the decision to use Apple TV or AirportExpress, analog or digital transmission for audio streaming depends on whether you need WiFi base station features of AirportExpress to establish wireless network and quality of your audio system to justify all-digital audio transmission. Followings are what I use in audio streaming from iMac/iPad mini /iPhone 5 to audio system in living room. Quality of audio output is comparable with Sonos Zone Player as audio source.

And I'm just about to purchase a Mac Book Pro as well.
Any thoughts and comments would be appreciated

I also have a 4 year old iMac 24". it is the 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo. I have been running Mountain Lion since it was released, and before that Lion. Runs great. Over the last month I have noticed some slow data transfers from a USB harddrive. But not enough to do any research. I use a USB harddrive for my Time Machine backup and notice no problems or slow transfers while the Time Machine backup runs. My iTunes has its nedia files on a USB harddrive and is used to watch videos, play music and share photos on the AppleTV. I also use Aperture on the iMac to store and manage 20,000 photos.
I have 6 GB of ram, 4GB and 2GB memory sticks. I know it is best to have identical ram sticks but my iMac model cannot run 8GB of ram and I feel 6GB is better than 4GB.
Mountain Lion is a great OS and I am glad I upgraded. It works great with the AppleTV (no airplay but iTunes on the iMac serves up all our music, photos and videos), iPhone, and iPod Touch. Also with my wifes brand new Macbook Pro. All the devices including the iMac can share data on iCloud.

I have so many photos on my Mac I only have 1G of memory left.  How can I move the photos to the external hard drive that is plugged into my iMac.

1GB? It's a miracle your Mac is running at all!
This is our resident iPhoto guru, Terence Devlin's, advice:
You can move your iPhoto Library to an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

Some of the problem is that i dont understand the thing which bin told when you go to bootcamp for a user of mac's since the model was the "classic" and we make newspapers on them - so i want and easy way to have and mac computer for my self (the new one) and let my daugter have a beutiful imac with windows on.

If you don't want Boot Camp and you don't want a virtual machine, go buy a Windows computer.
Both Boot Camped Windows and Windows running in a virtual machine work well. Your issues are because of your lack of knowledge or understanding, not because Boot Camp and virtual machines are poor products. Universities, large and small businesses, home users, etc. use virtual machines to run their operating systems.
Your statements about Boot Camp and Parallels are not the experience of thousands of users.
Either find someone who is knowledgeable about running Windows on Apple computers to help you or buy a Windows computer. Believe me, if you find a way to install only Windows on your Apple computer without using Boot Camp or a virtual machine you will have more problems than what you have already experienced.

  • Old iBook with airport card

    Hi,
I have a little problem and am an absolute novice in this field. I have a network set up at home with a Netgear router and 3 x G3/300 happily
    connected via wire.
My son got himself an old iBook (in very good knick...) and the thing is equipped with an airport card.
Can I connect the iBook to the Netgear router (the router has also wireless capabilities).
I have tried, but to no avail. The green pins in the control strip are all green,
and if I open the airport, the signal is very strong (but the status says "not available'.
Also, when I open the router settings on my G3, my router detects the wireless iBook, but still I cannot get on the web from the iBook.
oh... most importantly, the iBook is running os 9.2.2, and the other machines on the network are in mixed configuration (OS 9/X).
    Any suggestions??

try removing, then replacing the airport card in your comp

  • YEARS-old issue with slow play, 100% cpu usage, and conspiracy theories

I've had the same issue for YEARS now, with flash videos (like on youtube) and games starting out okay, but after a little while, they just start to stutter and slow way down, while the CPU usage goes up to ridiculous levels. The browser doesn't matter, firefox or chrome, online content or run off the local hard drive. I have the latest flash player, and this has been a problem ever since at least version 9. I'm using XP. I think version 8 never had this issue, but unfortunately all recent games and youtube videos won't run with version 8. Adobe did something with recent versions of flash player that causes this issue now. Google search and you'll see countless threads from people with all kinds of computers with all kinds of specs having the exact same issue.
There has never been an entry in the Adobe knowledgebase about it, despite the persistence of this problem.
It's like it's a coverup or something. The more I think about it, the more it reminds me about when the Netscape browser was caught secretly uploading information to their servers and resulting in browser slowdowns. Is flash player doing the same thing? Adobe has already been caught out with spyware-like activities with Photoshop connecting to Omniture through the flash-enabled splash screens that were purposely disguised to look like they were innocently connecting to a user's local system, but in fact connecting to stat and online marketing sites. Is this why this years-old problem has never been addressed in any official way? Now I'm just rambling. I want a fix. It's been years now that I haven't been able to enjoy more than a few minutes worth of flash content.
At this point, even if Adobe shrugged their shoulders and said "yeah, we know about the problem but we have no idea how to fix it" would be better than nothing at all.

  • Trying to transfer files from os X computer to old ibook with os 9

I've been trying to download something from my new mac with os x to my os 9 ibook using a memory stick. I need to be able save something as a postscipt or pdf to transfer to my new mac so I can print it. But every time I try to transfer to the old ibook the application shows as a document rather than an app. I can't download it from adobe cause explorer on the os 9 mac doesn't display the page properly. When I try to go to print and save as file the finder needs my attention and says file will be moved to the trash since the post script printer spooler can't be found. This used to work on another os 9 machine I had but this one just won't let me save file as .ps. Any help is obviously greatly appreciated.
    Frustrated non printing person.

If the application (name.app) you are trying to transfer is an OS X application, it won't run on OS 9. What is the application you are trying to download from Adobe?
I switched to Mozilla for OS 9 & like it better than IE. It works on web pages that IE has problems with. Plus, Mozilla has a pop-up ad blocker & a password manager. Download Wamcom's Mozilla browser at:
    http://wamcom.org/latest-131/
If you want to convert an OS 9 file to a PDF file, use PrintToPDF at http://www.jwwalker.com/pages/pdf.html Works just like PDF in OS X.

  • 3 year old played with my computer

Our friends visited today. We were looking for their 3 year old and when called she told us she was using the 'puter'. She had several windows open and my wife closed them all but now the entire screen and all windows are in purple sepia with what appears to be black/white reversal.
Any one have any ideas how I can reverse this or reset the colors of the screen? I tried colorsync utility (which was opened by the little girl) but I have no clue what to do.
    Thanks for any advice,
