Why is my new MacBook louder than my 5-year-old iBook?

New 2.4ghz MacBook aluminum owner here. There a very low hum coming from my new MacBook, and it is always there. I don't know if it is the hard drive or the fan, but is is quite obvious in a quiet room.
I compared it to my 2003 plastic iBook, and the iBook is SILENT compared to the new MacBook.
I checked the iStat Pro stats, and the fan is around 2000rpm and the temps are normal.
Anyone else notice this? I love the new machine, but this noise is slightly disappointing, especially compared to a 5-year-old iBook.

A G3 iBook is quite different than a G5 tower. The iBook was silent and would run 5.5 hours on a single battery. Of course, it was a nightmare to change the hard drive. The video wasn't shared with the CPU like the Macbook. Unfortunately, said G3 video card also wasn't affixed very well to the logic board either.
My Macbook doesn't quite have the same battery life, sounds like it has a turbocharger when doing video or heavy CPU, and will literally burn my left leg if I set it directly on my lap. There is a reason why Apple stopped selling "laptops" when the Macbooks came out.

I appreciate the advice. After reading your email, I tried using a friend's cable and it still did not work. The iPod shows up in the desktop but does not show up in iTunes. Since the iTunes does not recognize the iPod I am unable to do the reset/reload standard therapy. What I would like to do is wipe the iPod clean and load all of my music from my iTunes on my MacBook on the iPod.

I'll have to turn the wifi off and back on multiple times to get the internet to continue to work on my Macbook Pro (running mountain lion but did it on lion also) when it runs fine on my old white Macbook (running lion). if you have one already you can rename either one ..
and then go to system preferences - displays - color to select the profile .
you will get rid of the blue tint while keeping correct color and gamma
This is for the newer 2010 MBP's altho if same display was used might also give good results in the previous models as well . .

I know how you feel. Your MacBook Pro has integrated graphics 384 MB or 512 MB. If you are a gamer, creative professional or just want more VRAM get a 15 inch MacBook Pro with up to 1 gig of VRAM or a windows gaming laptop with up to 16 gigs of VRAM (a ridiculous amount!). If you get a windows pc, you can always install virtual box. There is no point in buying a 13 inch MacBook Pro unless you need a lightweight laptop with all of the extra "goodies". There is also no possible way to change the graphics unless you know how to "unhook" the card from the processor and install a new one. Sorry for the inconvenience.

New Mac Mini slower than my 4 years old iMac

My Intel iMac (20" display) four years old is out of order (I think the Power Supply was gone), and I bought the new entry level Mac Mini.
When I started using it I noticed that it's much slower in several tasks than my old iMac (when restarting, when opening applications, when working with an app with another appl in the background, etc. etc.). I was concerned about this, but then I asked some friends that have Mac minis and they said that it's normal.
Why? Why a computer with a new i5 Intel processor can be slower than a four years old iMac Core 2 Duo? Is it because of the slow drive (5200 rpm)? Or what is the explanation? If this is normal for the mini, I'll try to fix my old iMac as soon as possible.

Don't downgrade to Lion. For what it's worth, my experience with Lion and Mountain Lion has been almost the exact opposite than what CaptH reported: I find ML to be much faster and more reliable, both on my late-2012 Mini and my mid-2007 iMac.
Your perceived speed issues are almost certainly a result of the slower-spinning hard drive in the Mini as Shootist007 pointed out earlier. Go ahead and disable Spotlight if you want to, but once the indexing is complete (which can take a few hours – or even a few days if you have a lot of data) it shouldn't be a problem unless you are continually connecting different large external drives.
Get the latest Combo Updater and install that. If you have some minor OS issue, that should solve it. Do a normal Software Update / check the Mac App Store for updates after you install the Combo Updater. Get it here:

If you continue to be bugged by the slower speed, see if your local Apple Store will allow you to exchange it and a little extra money for an equivalent model with a Fusion Drive. Or go to Other World Computing and purchase their kit to add a second drive, and use it to add an SSD in the second drive bay:

Also, RAM is super-duper-uber-cheap right now. If your Mini has only the stock 4gb of RAM, you might be pleasantly surprised by the improved performance by doubling that. I have 16gb in my Mini, it cost me well less than a hundred bucks, and it makes everything better including graphics performance. But if you don't do something to work around that slow 5400rpm hard drive, it will always be the bottleneck in your system.

Have to say comparing this thread to many others that it isn't just the internet and wireless connection. I'm just about ready to throw my new Macbook in the garbage as this has been an ongoing issue since I bought it. And it's not the connectioon as anyone else coming in to our home is able to connect easily, Google TV runs just fine, the only device with issues is the MacBook. The hours I waste waiting for pages to load or trying to reconnect are numerous. Very dissappointed.
While this thread had a happy outcome, most of the others are like my situation where the problem doesn't get resolved. If the standard PCs and windows can work fine why doesn't a Mac. I feel duped and dumped twice as much money into a device that doesn't work as good as the less expensives laptops with Windows.

I bought my Macbook pro a couple days ago, I have made all the updates to it and is now freezing and showing the pinwheel all the time. I ran this computer side by side with my old 2011 macbook pro and this "new" one is running much slower.

I am also so dsappointed of buying macbook pro for the first time,and to think it was just almost a month ago....I am worried about the over heating issue,battery span that never lasprot that long as what the advertisement says...I really take extra care of this gadget because it is my first time having this so expenssive lappy...Ooohhh before I forget,my gadget is Macbook Pro 13 with memory of 8gb 1600 MHz DDR3..processor 2.9GHz Intel core I7...the only heave application tha I downloaded was the Mountain Lion I think ,and it was updated now from 10.8.1 - 10.8.2 ..maybe the next heavy app is the google chrome...and the rest is those apps that I bought from the Apple store that didnt cost me $10...before buying this unit ,I am using a lappy from Gateway with windows OS that runs slowly because of maybe being so old...lol I am using it for almost 3yrs because I only bought it from a junk shop alternately with Dell desktop thats so cheap,I only bought it almost $200 from a junkshop still.now after learning to fix and upgrade computers,I upgraded the DELL desktop from 1GB to 2GB,but I upraded my hardrive from 80gb to 1000gb...now I did test booting the 2,the desktop and this new Macbook Pro.my dell really boot so fast half more than this macbook pro...when I am downloading videos,really the Dell desktop have the fastest loading and downloading...I am not kidding and telling lies...I am so shock to know the real truth....I am sorry, but i is really true...But I promise my self to take care of this gadget because its my first time to have a genuinely brand new gadget and so expenssive...if no one believe this, i will upload a video on my youtube accnt just to prove that I am not telling a lie...oooh before I forget...just to prove that this gadget is geguine and new, here is the Serial Number of my Macbook Pro 13 which I posses almost a month now.. i just got my new mbp and can't really go on line. i use the internet via my old macbook now. the wireless router is in the room next door, but thats no problem for my old macbook. my new macbook pro is terrible slow and has poorely connection with the router in my room. nextdoor there is no problem.
i think i made all possible updates to both macbook and macbook pro.
could anyone help?

Change your router channel number. Most times this works & is all you have to do.
