Backing up G4 iMac

My mom has a G4 iMac. Her main purpose for it is for photos and iPhoto. Several months ago, she came to visit, and brought her computer for me to do a back up. I ended up having to rebuild her iPhoto library before it would let me back her up.
She has a 60GB HD, so I got her a 60GB portable drive to hook up via firewire to do the back up with. The idea is for her to just copy her "home" folder to the portable drive. She doesn't do much, so just copying that folder is enough.
The last few weeks, I have remotely logged to re-run her backup so she is more current. When I try to copy the home folder, the drive gets disconnected and says one of the pictures is corrupt and cannot be moved. I tried rebuilding her iPhoto library and that did not work like it did before.
Last night I tried Super Duper. I used it as a free app, erasing the destination drive before copying. IT STILL EJECTED THE HARD DRIVE and gave her an error.
Right now she does not have a backup at all, and I am fearful that the drive (or worse) may be going soon. Is there something I am missing, or haven't tried.
Here G4 falls short of the system requirements to install Leopard... so Time Machine isn't an option.
What could be causing the filed/photos to become so corrupt?
Any help or info would be really appreciated.
Thanks

I may have to copy one I have and send it to her to try booting off of it and repairing the HD.
Won't help unless it's the Black Retail PPC Tiger disk, or a Grey one specifically for her Mac.
If Disk Utility should fail to repair it, your best bet is DiskWarrior from Alsoft, you'll need the CD to boot from...
http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/
What may work is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
Or, have her get Applejack...
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files!
Disconnect the USB cable from any UPS so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

I have an IMAP mailbox that seems to only show mail 7 days on my iMac running Snow Leopard.  However, on my MacBook Pro I can see all old mail that I have not deleted.  It is running the next operating system (Lion?).  Does anyone know how I can get all my old mail back on my iMac.  It is my primary computer and I need some of those old messages.  I have tried to rebuild the mailbox but it has not done anything.

I have tried to rebuild the mailbox to no avail.  The mailbox behavior says:  Drafts (not checked) store draft messages on the server, Notes (checked) show not in Inbox, Sent (checked) Store sent messages on the server Delete sent messages when (option never selected), Junt (not checked) store junk messages on the server Delete junk messages when (option never selected), Trash (checked) moves deleted messages to the Trash mailbox and (checked)  store deleted messages on the server Permanently erase deleted messages when (one month old option selected).

  • Why does my nook open iphoto when i plug it in the usb port on the back of my imac running 10.6.8

I have downloaded Adobe Digital Editions and downloaded Overdrive from the public library. When I plug the Nook eReader in the USB port in the back of the iMac, iPhoto opens immediately. I know this is not a forum for Nook eReaders, but I have to start somewhere and figured since iPhoto is opening automatically, maybe someone can give me a clue.
    thank you,

Most likely, because your Mac and iPhoto think that you have connected a camera or mass storage device that has images on it.
Not sure where to go from there, but I would start by looking at the setting in both iPhoto Preferences and Image Capture if I wanted iPhoto to ignore that device.

Yes, if you use an application like Genie Timeline Pro, which was designed for this type of purpose.  Genie Timeline will make a complete copy of your Dell on the first backup. After that, it will only backup the changes that have occurred since the last backup.

Yes, if they are not exclude then TM backs them up.

I have an IMAC and I'm running OSX 10.9.2.  I'd like to store my Aperture /IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive.  In addition, I'd like to partition the external hard drive so that Time Machine can use it to both back up my IMac and the external library drives.  Is this possible? Can I set up a RAID 5 format for redundancy?

I'd like to store my Aperture /IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive.
That is fine and recommended.. use the fastest disk you can afford.. ie Thunderbolt>USB3>FW800>USB2.
In addition, I'd like to partition the external hard drive so that Time Machine can use it to both back up my IMac and the external library drives.
Let me be clear.. you want to partition the one disk.. use it for TM and move your files to the external disk.. and then backup to the same disk.. You can do it.. but that is not a backup.. that is an experiment in how long you can get away with running files and backups on the same disk before you lose everything.. like Russian Roulette.. pull the trigger enough times and laws of probability will do you in.
You must have backups on a different disk .. otherwise it is pointless.
Can I set up a RAID 5 format for redundancy?
No.. you can buy special USB and Thunderbolt external drives that support RAID..
BUT that is still not a backup.. let me show why.. you make a silly move and corrupt your file in aperture.. it is not that rare.
Raid will corrupt all copies of the files.. it is replicated across all disks.
Delete a photo it is deleted across all disks.. you have no recovery.
Alway, always consider RAID system one disk.. backup onto another disk.. and if the photos or movies are at all important to you.. ie your family .. make another copy and store in a relatives house.. There is no such thing as too much redundancy.

  • How do I transfer data from one time capsule to new time capsule when TC backs up an iMac and Power Book

How do I transfer data from one time capsule to new time capsule when TC backs up an iMac and MacBookPro

It is generally better to leave the old backups and start again.. unless there is something you particularly need.
But if you desperately want all the old backups you have to copy the sparse bundles.. this will take very long time as it must copy via the computer..

Take particular note of the initial comments.. ie before you read how to do it.. don't do it.

  • Is there any way to transfer photos from iphoto on my ipad back to my imac.

I accidentally formatted my external drive that contained my iphoto library ( I meant to format a usb flash drive).  I just bought a new imac and I haven't used the iPhoto on it, so there is no library on the iMac HD. All my pics were on the external drive.  I still have all the photos on the iPad 2 in iPhoto and want to transfer them back top the iMac, but when I connect it, it only recognizes the camera roll photos.  I have years worth of family photos.

    It's do-able - have a look here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/21617075#21617075

  • Back up my imac to restore on a new imac

I am planning on buying a new iMac thats newer than mine, but I need to sell mine in order to buy the new one. If I could have them both together I would just transfer through migration but it is not possible. I would like the new iMac to have all of my files, settings, info, etc. But what is the best way to do this? If I just back up my iMac through Time Machine than erase everything on it and reinstall OSX so it's like it's brand new, will the back up on the Time Machine allow me to have the new iMac restore it self from there and end up having the exact same files, info, setting, etc. as th other one did? I know migration basically turns your new Mac in to the exact same one you had but does a back up do that as well? I ahve thousands of photo. lots of programs I do not have the install disks for anymore (THOUSANDS of $$ worth of software!) and much more. PLEASE HELP!

Theoretically MA can use a TM backup drive for this, but I personally don't trust TM at all.
Get carbon copy cloner to make an exact copy of your old HD to the external one...
    http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
    Or SuperDuper...
    http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/
Of course, either way you go is to have this TM or cloned drive attached at first boot, than avail yourself of MA or Setup Assistant at first boot to get as exact as you can except for the new OS.

  • Do I need external hard drive to back up my iMac before update to mountain lion? My is OS 10.6.8

Do I need external hard drive to back up my iMac before update to mountain lion? My is OS 10.6.8.

First, repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Second, make a bootable backup to an external drive using the Restore option of Disk Utility:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Third, purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Be sure you meet the requirements for Mountain Lion:
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.

yes, given enough space on the destination drive (your library may grow over time). also, the drive needs to be connected directly to your Mac.
you might want to make sure the drive is not excluded from TM backups by checking in system preferences > time machine > options.
also, as for moving your iTunes library, see this read for tips/instructions.

When you setup the wireless and ethernet in the computer.. ipv6 will be on automatic.. this is wrong for the latest TC firmware and airport utility. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4597
Go to the wireless and ethernet setup in preferences and change ipv6 to link local.
Once you do the big backup by ethernet the wireless will function fine for incremental.. it is obviously not estimating the size correctly..
A full back-up on the iMac would be about 650 GB.  The partial updates that I have been trying start out at 115MB and keep growing indefinitely.  The original back-up never finished nor have any of the follow-up attempts.
The first estimate should be the full backup but it will keep growing as the backup advances.. I would also delete any inprogress files to make sure it is not messing up .. delete even a sparsebundle if there is one for the imac on the TC and start afresh once you have ethernet connection.
    See A10 here.
Pondini may have some other clues there to give you an idea of why the backup is slow or not finishing.. there is a lot of issues with TM when it decides not to work.

  • I use Time Machine to back up my iMac.  How can I copy some iPhoto events from my external hard drive to my MacBook?

I back up my iMac on my external hard drive.  When trying to copy the iPhoto Library onto my MacBook, I get the message "Cannot use TM backup as main library".  I don't even see an option to choose certain Events to copy.  Is there any way I can choose particular Events in iPhoto to copy to my MacBook?  How can I get the photos on my MacBook?

If you're on Leopard or Snow Leopard, or Lion with iPhoto '08 or earlier, see the gray box at the end of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #15.
If not, you cannot restore individual photos; just the entire iPhoto library.  A workaround is to restore it to an alternate location, such as your desktop, then export the selected photos from there.  See the pink box in the same article.
