Backup and cleanup of logfiles

Hello,
Our directors have a +900 days working period.
This means that the logfiles (show logging logfile) became quite long.
Is there a way to backup the logfiles and trim them down to, let's say, the last three months?
So that for example "show logging logfile | grep fc1/15" --> shows only data of the last three months.
I have been scrolling through many Cisco MDS9513 manuals but I could not find an answer...

AFAIK you cannot truncate the on-switch logs. I see no reason why you would want to, the switch manages the log length depending on available space.
However, to achieve what you want, you can do the following:
# show logging log start-time 2011 May 1 00:00:00
This will give you may, june, july logging.  You can furthermore filter this using grep like so
# show logging log start-time 2011 May 1 00:00:00 | grep fc1/15

  • Errors with Time Machine (not completing backup, and needing to erase the ".inProgress" package)

    I have in a previous discussion been talking about errors with my Time Machine backup.  The errors were with a problem with Indexing a file, it fails and stops the whole backup.  Each time it attemps another backup, it fills my ".inProgress" package with a (nearly) whole backup, filling my Time Machine hard drive, and thus errasing my previous good backups.  The error occurs after about 95% completion.
    In my last post of a similar disscussion, the problem was indexing the Preference Pane files and this caused the whole backup to fail.  This was my last post there:  (below in some additional info of my situation)

    This time it was the Mouse.prefPane that caused the error.  I'd like to exclude the entire PreferencePanes directory.
    This was my error message this time:
    I just realized this was on my small Developers partition.  Perhaps there is an error with the build, OR an error with the initial restore.  I'd like to perhaps exclude the entire /Volumes/Mac OS Lion GM.  I expect that Time Machine is working fine with my main partition and the error happens when it's almost done with the Mac OS Lion GM partition.
    The problem now is that I only have 265 GB of 3 TB available on my Time Machine HDD.  If attempt another backup, it'll surely erase about 410 GB of my past saved backups.  I've already lost 6 months, and I only have two months left of backups.  I need to erase the ".inProgress" package again.  That'll take time, and it's impossible to do from this main partition, even at root access.  This ".inProgress" has a total of two (nearly) full backups; it didn't cleanup the first full backup attempt while starting the second,perhaps it would have had it finished.  But I fear even if I exclude the whole "Mac OS Lion GM" partition,  It'll create a third full backup before cleanup and erase ~400 GB of previous good backups.  Then, I'll have a total of 4 (nearly) full backups!  3 TB is just enough without any past backups.
    Maybe I'll just copy my documentations of my 'errasing the ".inProgress" package'  last time (from the Mac OS Lion GM partition) and do a full restore of just that partition.  Thus erasing the errors all together.  If it doesn't fix the errors then this could be a bug in the build that doesn't allow Time Machine to work.  I've always included this partition in Time Machine before, even with other Lion builds, so I suspect that it was an error in the initial restore.  (I may be answering my own questions, and that the inital restore (of the small partition) is the problem, and I just need to re-restore the small partition)
    Again, I'm going to have to erase the ".inProgress" file to regain 1.53 TB of space before proceeding.
    Also, I gave myself permission to read the ".Backup.345781513.887697.log", the log that was created last night when I first started Time Machine this last time.  It was interesting, but didn't show the error I could see from the console.
    Right now, mds and mdworker appear to be going crazy even after I just now turned off Time Machine.  I think I'll let it go for the rest of the night.  Then I'll work on erasing the ".inProgress" package from the other partition boot up.
    That was my entire last post.  To add some information, I have two OS X partitons, both Mac OS X Lion.  One is my large main partition, the other is one I don't mind testing with.  I recently replaced my internal hard drive in my iMac and restored from Time Machine both partitions.  This appeared to go smoothly.  But I have yet to create a single successful Time Machine backup since.  At first it was doing a Full Backup, which I didn't like, but now it just aborts around 95% completion.  Each, time, it tries it fills the Time Machine hard drive with duplicate (nearly) full backups errasing my older good backups.  I would like to erase the ".inProgress" file to save space.
    My main question in this new discussion is does anyone know of a good way of erasing the ".inProgress" file? This is so I can preseerve my previous backups.  ACLs and other permissions seem to make it impossible to erase from this startup partition, the one I'm running Time Machine from.  Even at root level, if I give myself permission to change permissions or delete a file, it'll say Operation not Permitted instead of Permission Denied.  I have been able to delete this ".inProgress" package before when booting from the other  partition, but with great difficulty.  I have had much help from another Member in this Support Community when it comes to solving my Time Machine problems.  I think I have found the problem (indexing files in my small OS X partition), as stated in my copy& pasted post above, but I really need to delete this inProgress package first to save space before continuing!

    When I included my Main OS X partition again, I got an indexing error for the first time for that partition.  I might be interesting to note that the _spotlight process was running, and it's running again (the magnifying glass has a dot and it generically says "Indexing Tom's iMac").  mdworker, mds and backupd processes really are working hard, one moment they used over 500% of my CPU.  It's nice to know for once quad core is good for something other than video encoding.  (Now if they could just get the Finder to do more than 100.1%, only 1 thread is doing 100%, I'd like to see file size calculations 8 times quicker!)
    I never got an indexing error once in the past 2 weeks for that large Mac OS X v10.7.2 main volume, and it had appeared to finish that partition backup before running into problems with my smaller test partition.  Also, I had just updated the smaller test partition with a later build of Mac OS X.  But It appears that the beta builds are clearly not the problem.  I thought I could just restore again (from the December 4th backup) the small partition and both would be fine.
    I'll finish reviewing all the suggestions on Time Machine - Troubleshooting and go from there.  Hopefully, the _spotlight indexing simutaniously was the only problem.  It's strange that the indexing hasn't happened since the original restore last week untill I finally got a good clean complete partial Time Machine backup.  Why would the first Time Machine backup trigger indexing again?
    For now, I'm going to exclude the Main Partition again, and let another good backup run.  And try your suggestions.  (And wait till mds, mdworker, etc. to finish!)
    I have the logs of the first two sucsessful backups and the last two failed backups from the last 3 hours, if that would help.?

    Login as <SID>adm user & run the following command
    brrestore -b <backup logfilelogfile> -m full
    this command restore the backup.
    you can find backup logfile in /oracle/<SID>/sapbackup/.ant or .aft .
    For backup using brtools follow the following procedure:-

  • Database backups and retention?

    Is there any way in Sqlserver to take a full backup and only on successful completion delete the previous full backup?  I want to maintain a retention of 1 and have Sqlserver manage it without having to create a Maintainence History cleanup job that runs after the backup job. 

    That would ne a do-it-yourself solution. Main plans do not work like this. The main cleanup task is not tied to a pi backup task; unless you make it by only including one database and define the apropriate success/failure logic between the two in the SSIS package (using the designer).   • School me on preferred methods to backup and clean my data

    Yes, I realize this may have been beaten to death, but as I'm going through a serious housecleaning with my drives, I would like to know what the more effective ways would be to backup and clean my drives/data.
    I am currently running a 74GB Raptor (main drive, only as a Systems location), a 150GB Seagate in the lower drive, and a 250 LaCie 800 FW external.
    I will be wiping the main drive clean for a fresh install, so any pointers on cloning, Duping, etc. would help quite a lot. I was currently just dragging and dropping to "copy".
    Last, what utilities/softwares are recommended? I have macaroni for unused language files and automated permissions cleanup. It sounds as though I should add DiskWarrior to the arsenal as well.

    2) 원인분석
    이 문제는 에러가 아니다. RMAN은 여러 개의 arhive directory중 하나의
    directoy안에 있는 archived file들만 삭제한다. 그래서 나머지 directory안의
    archived log file들은 삭제되지 않고 남게 되는 것이다.
    3) 해결책
    RMAN이 강제로 모든 directory안의 archived log file들을 삭제하게 하기 위해서는
    여러 개의 채널을 할당하여 각 채널이 각 archive destination안의 archived file을
    백업하고 삭제하도록 해야 한다.
    이것은 아래와 같이 구현될 수 있다.

    이 경우 RMAN은 recover시 archived redo log대신에 incremental backup을 사용할
    수 있기 때문에 백업 후 모든 archived redo log를 삭제하기 위해 OS utility를 사용한다.
    그러나 다음 번 backup시 다음과 같은 Error를 만나게 된다.
    RMAN-6089: archive log NAME not found or out of sync with catalog
    2) 원인분석
    이 문제는 OS 명령을 사용하여 archived log를 삭제하였을 경우 발생한다. 이때 RMAN은
    archived log가 삭제되었다는 것을 알지 못한다. RMAN-6089는 RMAN이 OS 명령에 의해
    삭제된 archived log가 여전히 존재하다고 생각하고 백업하려고 시도하였을 때 발생하게 된다.
    3) 해결책
    가장 쉬운 해결책은 archived log를 백업할 때 DELETE INPUT option을 사용하는 것이다.
    예를 들면

    두 번째로 가장 쉬운 해결책은 OS utility를 사용하여 archived log를 삭제한 후에

    catalog의 COMPATIBLE 파라미터가 8.1.5이하로 설정되어 있으면 RMAN은 찾을 수 없는
    모든 archived log의 status를 "DELETED" 로 셋팅한다. 만약에 COMPATIBLE이 8.1.6이상으로
    설정되어 있으면 RMAN은 Repository에서 record를 삭제한다.

    Very strange, I issue following command in RMAN on both primary and standby machine, but it they don't delete the 1_55_758646076.dbf, I find in v$archived_log, this "/home/oracle/app/oracle/dataguard/1_55_758646076.dbf" had already been applied.

    After you restore from backup, you MUST sync to restore your iTunes content. No iTunes content is included in the iPhone backup. Your apps should be in your iTunes library, just sync them back to your phone. If for some reason your apps are not in your library, you can re-download them for free:

  • How can I move the download backups and backups folder to a new location

    I am using Lightroom 4.3 on a windows 7 64 windows computer with two hard drives.  One dedicated to running programs and the larger one for storage of all my other stuff.  Well my backups and download backups folders are on the smaller drive and I need to move them to the other larger drive. Can I do this without totally freaking Lightroom out?  Thank you so much for your help.

    I am not familiar with the technical term "freaking Lightroom out", however, Lightroom doesn't care where the backups are. You can do anything you want with them, and Lightroom will work fine.

  • How do i use the recovery disks and backup and restore my laptop in a new HDD without losing OS lic?

    I am running a HP-DV6 6090ee laptop with windows 7 Home Premium 64bit OS. This problem started from last evening.
    I am getting a "Smart Hard disc error" error message before boot and ater booting windows saying that my HDD is having problems and i need to backup and check the hdd.
    After checking i found that i have a corrupted hdd and i am going to replace with a new one.
    I need to know the following :
    > How do i restore my windows license and my antivirus license in the new hdd?
    > i dont currently have a OEM HP OS cd. can i use any windows 7 cd??
    > at what stage should i use the recovery disk i created from the recovery partition be used? Whats its specific use?
    I really appreciate any quick response as my current HDD is running out of life.

    My apps store will not go online with verizon network, but on wifi it works. I am on an iphone 4, verizon.  I tried to do a complete, backup and restore on the phone 1 day before i noticed this problem,  The backup finished but the RESTORE would fail I had an error, could not access Apple server ( some server name I cant remember).
    I have plenty of space available on the iphone,
    8gb free,
    ios version- 6.1.3 ( 10B329)
    carrier - Verizon 14.0
    Modem Firmware - 3.0.04
    Can someone help.
    I tried doing my backup restore on the same computer as I once did a year ago. and THis time I cant do the restore on the iphone.
    computer osx is 10.5.8
    itunes version 10.
    I do not wish to go to ios 7 at this time.

    Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
    Basic troubleshooting is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.
    If the issue continues, contact the carrier to troubleshoot the network connectivity issues.

    What can I do?

    If you want all the songs from an artist on your phone you can to to the artist view, tap on the artist, scroll to the bottom of the list and you will see a Download All button.  This works for playlists and albums too (scroll to the bottom and tap the Download All button).  I suppose if you wanted all your music on your phone you could create a smart playlist in iTunes on your computer that would contain all your music, upload it to iTunes match (Store>Update iTunes Match), and then you would get a Download All button at the bottom of this playlist on your phone to download all your songs.

    iTunes will not let me backup and sync to new phone encrypted password?? I've never set a password for my old iPhone 3gs but tried my old Apple ID sign-in passwords to no avail. I've simply sat here so frustrated....my husband sync'd his new iPhone 4 no problem, somehow the checkbox shows Encrypted password and I'm at a loss on how to change this/find the password and transfer my old backup onto my new phone so I can use it.     Not able to sign into Blackberry Protect.  Backup and Restore function not working. Message is: "Your device isn't associated with a Blackberry ID."  My Blackberry Messenger and Blackberry World is working fine so I am sure its not an ID issue on the phone.  I can sign into Link, Blackberry.com and Protect.  I see my device in Protect but cannot send messages or view it on a map.  Times out with cannot reach device message.  BB Protect on Device has a swirling circle beside the on/of switch.  Cannot turn off.  
    I have deleted Link and re-installed.
    I have reset phone to default(factory) and signed in. 
    OS level is 10.2.1.3062
    BB Link is 1.2.3.56

    I managed to figure this out myself. I had to delete the device from the Blackberry Protect website.  protect.blackberry.com.  I wiped my device again and signed in with my Blackberry ID.  I dont know if the step of wiping was necessary as I did not try my backup with the current configuration on the device following the delete.  Restore is in progress for me!
