Backup complete with no archivelog
Hi all,
10g and 11g,
achivelog enabled
I want to do a hot backup without generating any acrhivelogs. it this possible?
I want my backupset to be complete as itself and the simplest and the smallest single copy so far,
and no redundancy whatsoever, And it does not need recovery when restored or maybe the least recovery process it can be.
The following are my procedures:
I will tell the users to stop processing at 6pm.
I will shutdown listener.ora
I will shutdown and startup restrict.
I will alter system switch logfile 3 times.
Then run rman backup.
Do you think I will still generate archive logs? My goal really is to avoid recovery during restore.
Any ideas is highly appreciated :)
Thanks,
zxy
I want to do a hot backup without generating any acrhivelogs.Oracle is always doing things in the background.
The only way to have a backup that doesn't require you to apply any archive logs that get generated during the backup is to do a cold backup

PSAPPD1 ONLINE* ONLINEHi again
Please let me know whether we need to put the parameter remote_login_password=exclusive in pfile or spfile
I prefer the spfile, just:
SQL> alter system set remote_login_passwordfile = exclusive scope = spfile;
To grant sysoper to system:
SQL> grant sysoper to system;
And restart the instance.

Backup Fails with Invalid RECID Error
Hi All,
Please help me to understand Caution -section

Backup Fails with Invalid RECID Error: Solution 2
This solution is more difficult than solution 1:
To create the control file with SQL*Plus:
1. Connect to the target database with SQL*Plus. For example, enter:
% sqlplus 'SYS/oracle@trgt AS SYSDBA'
2. Mount the database if it is not already mounted:
SQL> ALTER DATABASE MOUNT;
3. Back up the control file to a trace file:
SQL> ALTER DATABASE BACKUP CONTROLFILE TO TRACE;
4. Edit the trace file as necessary. The relevant section of the trace file looks something like the following:
# The following commands will create a new control file and use it
# to open the database.
# Data used by the recovery manager will be lost. Additional logs may
# be required for media recovery of offline data files. Use this
# only if the current version of all online logs are available.
STARTUP NOMOUNT
CREATE CONTROLFILE REUSE DATABASE "TRGT" NORESETLOGS ARCHIVELOG

# Configure RMAN configuration record 1
VARIABLE RECNO NUMBER;
EXECUTE :RECNO := SYS.DBMS_BACKUP_RESTORE.SETCONFIG('CHANNEL','DEVICE TYPE DISK
DEBUG 255');
# Recovery is required if any of the datafiles are restored backups,
# or if the last shutdown was not normal or immediate.
RECOVER DATABASE
# All logs need archiving and a log switch is needed.
ALTER SYSTEM ARCHIVE LOG ALL;
# Database can now be opened normally.
ALTER DATABASE OPEN;

# Online tempfiles have complete space information.
# Other tempfiles may require adjustment.
ALTER TABLESPACE TEMP ADD TEMPFILE '/oracle/oradata/trgt/temp01.dbf' REUSE;
# End of tempfile additions.
5. Shut down the database:
SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE
6. Execute the script to create the control file, recover (if necessary), archive the logs, and open the database:
STARTUP NOMOUNT
CREATE CONTROLFILE ...;
EXECUTE ...;
RECOVER DATABASE
ALTER SYSTEM ARCHIVE LOG CURRENT;
ALTER DATABASE OPEN ...;
Caution:
If you do not open with the RESETLOGS option,
then two copies of an archived redo log for a given log sequence number may
exist--even though these two copies have completely different contents.
For example, one log may have been created on the original host and the other on the new host.
If you accidentally confuse the logs during a media recovery,
then the database will be corrupted but Oracle and RMAN cannot detect the problem.Please help me to understand Caution -section

If you accidentally confuse the logs during a media recovery,
then the database will be corrupted but Oracle and RMAN cannot detect the problem.As per my understanding it says. If you don't open database with RESETLOGS option then there may be archived logs with log sequence number which is already archived on the source host. This may happen due to difference in RECIDs. Now when the database needs media recovery for this particular log sequence, you may provide any of them. So in this case, RMAN and Oracle will not be able to differentiate the two files and can accept any of the archived log files during recovery. Since the contents of two archived logs are different, because they are generated at different times and they contains different transactions. So, internally it corrupts your database.

This was suggested by the Backup Assist - software vendor....
A.)
...for 0x81080101:
"ERROR - The shared restore point operation failed with error (0x81000101)
The creation of a shadow copy has timed out. Try again this operation."
If you receive the above error in your report, we have recently found a registry key which
contains the timeout value set by Microsoft for VSS and found that you can edit this to extend it.
To get to the registry key, open Regedit (Start > Run > Regedit) and browse to:
"HKLM\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion\\SPP\\CreateTimeout".
Change value to 1200000 (2*10*60*1000 = 20 mins).
The default for the timeout period is 10 mins so hopefully doubling this will give enough time to
complete the snapshot.
If this isn't present, you'll need to manually enter the registry key. It's a DWORD 32-bit key.
--> NOTE: HAve not done this yet.

Is there a tool we can use to debug VSS or troubleshoot or OS backups further?

Any help is greatly appreciated - thx.

Scot PichelmanHi Scot,
Sometimes a third party backup application will change the default VSS provider adding VSS writers which causes Windows Server Backup using an incorrect component in doing backup, that's why I suggest to delete it for a test. Anyway you can reinstall it
after testing.
And as you said a high-load CPU could also be the cause of the issue so you may need to first rule hardware effective out.
If issue still exists, please try the steps below as well:
1. Please check DCOM Server Process Launcher service is started.
2. If not, try to change RPC service to run as SYSTEM account. To do this please modify the following key:
Note: Backup the key before edit incase it cause any issue.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\RpcSs\
Find "ObjectName" and change the value to LocalSystem.
Reboot to see if DCOM back to work and if Windows Server Backup starts working. If not, please provide the result if there is any new error occurs.
If DCOM still not work, please compare the content of the following key with a working server:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\OLE
Edit if there is any difference and make sure you created a backup of the key before editing.

Hi
We have a Windows 2012 server with Exchange 2013, all is working fine except now i am getting issues with the backup.
'Exchange - The application will not be available for recovery from this backup. the consistency check failed for the component Microsoft Exchange Server'
I have checked the database all is fine, i have created a new db and move all mailbox;s over and then removed the old db, i have enabled circular logging and then disabled it, it seems no matter what i do i cannot get a full backup!
i did have to restore the server once and the backups still worked for about 4 days after that and then stopped, i have also tried to remove and re add the backup role!
i am stumped, any advice would be great!Hi
Ok, i created a test db and tried to back it up right away, it failed, i did not add any mailbox's to it either. i got quite a few events in the windows logs, as well as the same event above i got the following:

CRS 5 Backups fail with this error: Unknown error occured while connecting to the host
Dear All,
We have backup issue with UCCX 5.0(2)SR03_Build317, while trying to take backup giving following error "Unknown error occurred while connecting to the host".
I have found the solution in the Cisco and tried all the suggestion, still not working and same error observed. Due to backup issue we unable to do any changes on the CRS, when we try to create new agents, those agents are not reflecting in the CRS.
Also I have observed bellow error , when try to re-sync the JTAPI,
Error while handling the input request.

Solution
Complete these steps in order to resolve this issue:
•1. Access the UCCX server and navigate to Start > Run, and type CET.
•2. When the warning message appears, click NO.
•3. Choose com.cisco.crs.cluster.config.ArchiveAdminConfig.
•4. On the right side, double-click the record ID.
•5. Click the com.cisco.crs.cluster.config.ArchiveAdminConfig tab, and clear the password under Backup Storage.
•6. Click Apply.
•7. Navigate to Appadmin > Tools > Backup and Restore.
•8. Under Backup Storage Location, type the new password, and click Update.
After you complete these steps, you can run the backup. If the backup fails, restart the server, and try the backup again. If the backup still fails, you can navigate to CET, clear all the fields, and then type the new information for the storage location.
Please help me with your suggestions.
Thanks & Regards,

Backup completes but certain files have not been backed up
I've been suspicious for a while that TM hasn't been backing up all new files but my fears were allayed because what appeared to happen was that they got backed subsequently. However now I have a file that didn't get backed up when I connected TM after that file was put in my Movie directory and despite repeated backups, still doesn't appear when I go into TM.
I've had a look at section D5 on Pondini's troubleshooting guide (Backups seem to run ok, but nothing gets backed-up):
http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/D5.html
There's nothing in the exclusions box, I've tried a "full reset" and I've run disk repair on the external HDD that TM is on and also backed up after restarting my mac. I haven't yet tried with any test files though but one thought has struck me which is that I sometimes run a program called Applejack (which runs in Single User mode) which repairs permissions and a few other tasks. I've a hunch that if I re-start after running that, then perhaps TM will recognise the movie file I have in my movie folder as needing to be backed up.
However, any other suggestions gratefully received. Thanks in advance.Linc Davis wrote:
Before you start doing anything destructive, such as deleting backups, please try any or all of the following:
1. Launch the Console application, select "system.log" from the list of logs, and enter "backupd" in the filtering text box. Then run a backup. What log messages appear?
Apr 5 09:19:33 Macintosh com.apple.backupd-auto[7796]: Not starting scheduled Time Machine backup - time machine destination not resolvable.
Apr 5 09:21:49 Macintosh com.apple.backupd[7838]: Starting standard backup

Apr 5 09:21:53 Macintosh com.apple.backupd[7838]: Backup completed successfully.
2. Launch the Terminal application, enter "touch " without the quotes, but with the trailing space, and then drag one of the problems files into the window from the Finder. Some text will appear. Press the return key and quit Terminal. This will change the modification date of the file to the present. Now run your backup and see whether the file is backed up.
I tried this and Terminal indicated that permission was denied, ran the backup anyway but nothing was backed up (as you would expect).
3. Create a new file, type and content unimportant, in the same folder as one of the problem files. Does it get backed up?
Moved another 700+MB file into my Movie directory, just ran a back up and it wasn't backed up.
4. Turn off Time Machine. Move or delete the file
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
Turn TM back on, reset your preferences, and try a backup. Any change?
Moved the file from Movie folder to Desktop, deleted the plist file above; ran a backup and nope, no change (backup was 15KB).
Incidentally, there is also a file called com.apple.TimeMachine.plist~orig in that directory where the date modified corresponds to when I acquired my macbook and did restore from the last TM backup from my previous macbook, just mentioning in case that has any bearing on my problem.
Thanks for your suggestions, about to try your 5th. -

Best option for testing the Restore of an Backup Online with Legato
In my company is needed to test of Restore of an Backup Online with Legato of my Production System in a server available for test with the same operating system Windows 2000 Server, the same version of SAP R/3 4.6B and database Oracle 8.1.7.4.1, but the SID is different.
My question as is the best way to make this procedure? It will need to return to install sap with the same SID of production ??? or a way exists to change the SID and next to restore the backup online.
I like to know me the best one practice that they can recommend to me for these cases.
Thanks to all

Catalog backup problems with PSE 11
Hi,
I'm having terrible problems trying to backup my catalog to an external hard drive.
My PC is running Windows 7 with 8 GB of internal memory. My external hard drive is formatted to FAT 32 and has 130GB of spare capacity. My catalog is 45GB.
I have previously backed up the the catalog without any problems but can't remember if I did this before I upgraded to PSE 11.
I initially tried doing a full backup but got an error part way through writing the 'breeze' data. Having read that the breeze data was only used for face recognition, I deleted the remaining breeze data files and tried again.
I then encountered a problem when writing some of my early .jpg files. I couldn't see any obvious problem with these but tried removing them and runnning the back up again.
This time it got a bit further but hung up on some .mpg files.
I removed all video files and tried again.
This time it got up to over 60% complete but it then hung up on some early files which had a 'description' 2002 rather than a straight date name to the file. I thought that there might be a problem with file names including ' 's ', so removed these and tried again.
I then tried running Catalog 'optimize' and 'repair' (I didn't tick 'the re-index visual similarity data').
I eventually got up to over 65% complete but couldn't get the backup to go past my 2007 files no matter what files I removed.
I then tried doing an incremental backup using a Catalog file that I had created in 2011. This backup failed with 'an error encountered while writing.....WaldoData\waldo.cache'
I now don't know what to try! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
FYI, looking at the backup Catalog files that I have previously created, it appears that only the first contains all the images from whole catalog with an equal number of .xml files.
Two others which I created (which I can't remember were full or incremental backups) only have some of the images. I'm sure that this can't be right.
I presume that for an intial backup the .xml files should run from B0000001 to Bnnnnnnn; the .jpg/.mpg/ etc from Bnnnnnnn+1 to B 2(nnnnnnn) and that when one runs an incremental back up the new .xml files are added from B2(nnnnnnn)+1 to B2(nnnnnnnn)+(mmmm) and the image files continuing for a further (mmmm). Is this correct?
Otherwise what should one be seeing?
Regards
MikeThank you for your information about my problem with PSE 11. I have since tried the programme on 2 different computers and it works fine. Seems like the problem is with my computer although my old PSE 10 works okay. I'd appreciate any ideas about what could be wrong with my computer to cause my photos to break up into various segments which don't join together particularly when I move them into 'before and after horizontal' or '......vertical' and even when zooming them. my ibook keeps shutting down completely with the date to reverting back to 1969. i restart only after i plug in charger it lets me, then change date and save. the next time i use same thing happens, safari, iphoto, email are the only ones i have used.
please help! i am at a loss here.
thank you, movie lady
ibook g4The iBook does not have a backup (PRAM) battery. It only has the main battery and a small capacitor which maintains the settings long enough to do a battery swap. If the battery is dead, what you are seeing can happen.
If the battery is not a problem (or even if it is), you could try resetting the PMU and see if that helps. -

</Event>Hi,
in my case, I didn't have "System Writer" shown in the Writers list. I tried everything to put it up and running, but without any luck. I even tried re-registering writers, which was a bit risky, but that didn't help either.
Then I have found this hotfix, installed it, and it worked after it.
Anyway, you can find here on technet few topics about this particular issue. For the others, something else worked. Please, take a look:

You can try all of this (I did), but this hotfix saved my day in the end.
Hope this helps.
