Backup Database Task - User Permissions
Hi
I am currently implementing an SSIS package to cater for the backup of our database system. I am using a Back Up Database Task connecting to the database using SQL Authentication. This login has public server rights and db_backupoperator database
role rights.
Having tested the package, it seems to fail on the backup task because of the following error:
[Execute SQL Task] Error: Executing the query "BACKUP DATABASE [CAAP] TO DISK = N'R:\CAAP_Backup..." failed with the following error: "Only users who are members of the following roles can perform this operation: sysadmin fixed server
role; dbowner or dbcreator fixed database role in the current database.
Only users who are members of the following roles can perform this operation: sysadmin fixed server role; dbowner or dbcreator fixed database role in the current database.
Why does it need dbOwner/dbCreator/sysadmin rights to execute a simple backup? Isn't this the point of the dbBackupOperator role?
Thanks.
Hi divvyboy,
I am unable to reproduce the issue in my test environment. The backup script works well in an Execute SQL Task which uses the ADO .NET Connection Manager created by a Back Up Database Task using SQL Server authentication type. Only the Public and db_backupoperator
database roles is okay.
According to the screenshots, the error was thrown by the Execute SQL Task actually. Since the package also contains a Back Up Database Task, there is no need to perform the backup operation from the Execute SQL Task. You can test whether the Back Up Database
Task which doesn’t need us to input a backup script can perform the database backup correctly. If the Back Up Database Task works well, you can remove the Execute SQL Task and go with the Back Up Database Task.

Copy Users/Permissions/objects from a database to another database
Can anyone help me how to copy users, permissions, stored procedures, views, functions and all other objects from one database to another database.
I need a SQL Script to get this job done. I cannot use backup restore or SSIS Package. There's also a transfer sqlserver objects task available in SSIS

HTMLDB, Database Users, Permissions
I am working with a client that has an Oracle DB app that uses Forms 6i for the UI. We want to start using HTMLDB in addition to Forms. Currently, all the users have a database username and password, and user permissions are controlled by database roles and individual table permissions. The goal is to allow the users to login to HTMLDB with their db username and password so the existing db roles and permissions will be in effect.
I have my HTMLDB configuration setup without a PLSQL Username/Password in the marvel.conf file, and this allows users to login to the HTMLDB apps with their DB username and password. This works fine.
I have a report setup that selects from an employee table. Only a few roles have select permissions on this table. (I will also add that this table is in a schema that is mapped to the HTMLDB workspace) What I am finding is that, regardless of the permissions assigned to the logged in user, they can run this report.
Looking at the DB connections in Enterprise Manager, it shows the username of the logged in user, so it would apper that the webserver is connecting to the DB as I would expect. How is it that even non-privileged users can run this report?
If I login via sqlplus as the same user and attempt to run a select against this table, I get "ora-00942 table or view does not exist", so I am sure my permissions are correct. What am I missing?
Any help on this is greatly appreciated.
-TonyTony,
It is not your imagination, this is how things are 'sposed to work. At a Forms/HTML DB site we worked on, individual users were granted database roles, as you described. Forms controlled access to functionality by interrogating user_role_privs and would display access points to modules via menus in strict accordance with the connected user's privileges. In the back-end, however, the application executed in the super-user schema that had object privileges on everything. But user-level access control had already been accomplished by filtering what could be presented in the UI.
With HTML DB, your users are connected as their database account. This achieves authentication and obtains the value of USER from the database for :APP_USER. Those users have privileges on schema objects through roles. Roles are not enabled in stored procedures, which is the mechanism through which all database interaction is performed in HTML DB.
The minimum that you'll need to do is to establish row-level access control by using Oracle's Virtual Private Database feature, or VPD (aka, FGAC/RLS), which you can enable for every page request using the VPD application attribute. There will be an excellent how-to published very soon about that. (BTW, you don't need to connect using the database accounts to use this feature, in fact it's designed assuming the opposite situation.)
When you need to limit access to application components based on user privileges, you'll have to do much more. For example, you might build an authorization model based on user_role_privs. Ensure that all SQL against the application schema is performed through APIs. The APIs will run in the application schema which should own the objects and would therefore have all required object privileges. The authorization model will be implemented as an API that is called from HTML DB authorization schemes attached to pages, regions, processes, etc. Then you can do things like, if the current user is not a manager don't show them links to the 'Show My Employee Detail' page and don't let them run the page if they attempt to do so and also send someone an email if that happens.

Unknown User Permissions - Erase and Install Backup Plan
Hi everyone,
I upgraded from Tiger and therefore have the unknown user permissions problems. I'd like to erase and install my system and am writing to verify the following:
If I copy my data (with the funny permissions) to a Powerbook in Firewire Disk Mode, reinstall Leopard on my new iMac, then copy the data back from the Powerbook in disk target mode, will the permissions be fixed?
Thank you, Tom Bertram.Thomas,
If you are talking about the "unknown" group problem seen in the permissions portion of Get Info, be aware that Apple is in the process of putting out a Knowledge Base article to address this and it may be wise to be patient a little longer.
The user accounts inherited from Tiger belong to a "group" that has a missing piece of information -- a group name that Leopard wants. The installer should have dealt with this but it didn't. Anyway, a couple of simple Terminal commands can fix this for each such account. Once the Group description is proper, there will no longer be any need to change the group membership of your files.
Unfortunately the first couple tries Apple made of describing how to do this appear to be in error. See the following thread:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1280472&tstart=0
The correct commands should be posted by Apple shortly and then you can resolve this without having to do a whole re-install.

Why no native restore database task in SSIS Toolbox
Hi,
I'm a little confused as to why there is no "Restore Database Task" in the SSIS Toolbox when editing a package in BIDS/SSDT?
We are provided with a native "Back Up Database Task" but no corresponding restore component. Searching the web shows that most developers are using "Execute T-SQL Task" to restore a database, which is fine.
But why have half the a solution to the backup/restore activity in the toolbox?
Thanks,
GaryHi Gary,
this is a user forum, not Microsoft SQL Server/SSIS developer's team forum or so.
If you have a suggestion then file it under the suggestions area of
MS Connect.
In my view having the restore via Execute SQL Task suffices.

Backup database and external files
We have a web application that stores files in a separate folder outside the database, we want to do real time backup (while the users are connected to the application). If we run a scheduled task to backup the database and then the files, then the database and files will be out of sync, because if the database backup takes 5 mins for instance, then we will be backing up the files that are related to some records that were not added to backup.
What is the best way to do real time backup for database and external files so that we have them both in synch?user11738458 wrote:

Create server role for backups (BACKUP DATABASE and RESTORE HEADERONLY)
Hello-
I wish to create a server role that will allow any users assigned to it to be able to issue a BACKUP DATABASE and RESTORE HEADERONLY for any database on the server. I've been searching Google and MSDN but haven't had much luck. I can create the
user (CREATE SERVER ROLE backupuser;) but don't really know how to assign the permissions to it that I want. I wish to keep the permissions as narrow as possible for good practice; I could just assign the user to the sysadmin group but that shouldn't
be necessary.
If anyone can help, I would much appreciate it.Whenever you need to find out the required permissions for a command, the best way is to look up these commands in Books Online, and to the Permissions/Securities section. This is what I always do when people asks these questions, because I rarely knows
the answer by heart.
So, let's see what the topic for BACKUP has to say:
BACKUP DATABASE and BACKUP LOG permissions default to members of the
sysadmin fixed server role and the db_owner and db_backupoperator fixed
database roles
The permission section for RESTORE HEADERONLY says:
Beginning in SQL Server 2008, obtaining information about a backup set or
backup device requires CREATE DATABASE permission. For more information,
see GRANT Database Permissions (Transact-SQL).
So it seems that if you want a user that has server-level rights to back up databases, this must be sysadmin, which is a little disappointing. One possibility is to package the BACKUP command in a stored procedure, which you sign with a certificate. Then
you create a login from the certiticate, and add that login to sysadmin. BACKUP accepts parameters for many of its arguments, so you don't have to build dynamic SQL. Still it is not really a satisfactory solution, since this user will have to work with
BACKUP "commands" that will be procedure calls.

Hi,
A backup job has been setup on Windows Server 2012 (Platform: Win32NT; ServicePack: ; Version: 6.2.9200.0; VersionString : Microsoft Windows NT 6.2.9200.0) via Windows Backup Software UI (Local Backup 1.0).
It is appearing as a scheduled task "\Microsoft\Windows\Backup\Microsoft-Windows-WindowsBackup" belonging to user 'nt authority\system' in task scheduler.
The problem is that the Backup job never start despite the scheduled task running and completing successfully (when run automatically or manually)!
Would you be able to explain why and assist in resolving that issue?
Here is what we know:
When the backup is run manually via the Windows Backup Software UI, it works fine.
When the backup is run via command line (as set in schedule task) in a cmd command prompt (as local/domain 'administrator' or as 'nt authority\system' which is possible by running command prompt via 'PsExec.exe -i -s cmd'), something like "%windir%\System32\wbadmin.exe
start backup -templateId:{f11eb3aa-74e7-4ff4-a57b-d8d567ee3f77} -quiet", it works fine.
If you manually run the preset scheduled task while logged in as administrator, the task run and complete successfully but the backup job does not start.
Idem if you schedule task is run automatically at scheduled time.
The schedule task run and complete successfully but the backup job does not start.
It is confirmed by running the following in a command prompt as 'nt authority\system':
schtasks /run /tn "\Microsoft\Windows\Backup\Microsoft-Windows-WindowsBackup"
SUCCESS: Attempted to run the scheduled task "\Microsoft\Windows\Backup\Microsoft-Windows-WindowsBackup".
Despite success result, the Backup job does not start running...
No errors or warning appears anywhere in Event Logs (Microsoft > Windows > Backup or Task Scheduler) nor in the scheduled task History tab. The schedule task complete successfully but no Backup job is run...
If scheduled task automatically set by Windows Backup software is duplicated (copied) and set manually it runs fine as 'administrator' and as 'nt authority\system' (subject that 'nt authority\system' is added to the 'Backup Operators' AD group).
Here is an export of the current pre-set schedule task, is there any settings that need to be changed to make it works?

Thank you in advance for your feedback.Once again, the issue is not to run the backup manually from the command line but to have it run via the scheduled task setup by the Windows Backup software.
By default, the schedule task is to be run as NT Authority\System, and when run under this account, the backup does not start (even though account is member of Backup Operators) and job can manually be run via elevated command prompt. This is not a normal
behavior and constitute a major bug in Windows Server 2012.
From my understanding the NT Authority\System account is a built-in account from Windows that should by default be part of the Administrators group (built-in) even though it does not explicitly appears like it in AD by default.
This account shall have by default Administrators rights and Backup Operators rights (via the Administrators group) without being explicitly added to those groups (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/windows/desktop/ms684190%28v=vs.85%29.aspx). By design
it is supposed to be the most powerful account which has unrestricted access to all local system resources. If that is not the case (as it seems) then this would constitute a major bug in Windows Server 2012 edition.
As said previously and as you confirmed, currently by default NT Authority\System on Windows 2012 server cannot start backup manually via an elevated command prompt unless it is manually added to Backup Operators (or Administrators) group. But wouldn't that
constitute a bug of Windows Server 2012?
Our server has not yet been restarted since I added NT Authority\System account to the Administrators group explicitly manually so I cannot yet confirmed it would sort the issue. Indeed it is heavily in use so cannot easily be restarted. Will confirm when
done.
We also have an additional problem where after a while of last reboot, part of the Exchange ECP can no longer be properly loaded in the web browser due to compilation error (compilation is done via NT Authority\System account which seems to no longer have
sufficient right to compile .NET code). What is strange is that it works at first and then stop working at some point... I am hopeful that adding NT Authority\System to the Administrators group would sort this issue as well but once again, that shall not be
needed!!!
Could a Windows Server 2012 update introduced some security policy changes or else that prevent NT Authority\System to have full power? -
How to backup database using sql query?

Problem resetting user permissions- CMD R not working
Hi,
Thanks in advance to those willing to lend some help!
GEAR:
2.53 GZ Core 2 Duo Mini running 10.8.5 All updates done.
I believe I have a current Time Capusle backup at my disposal.
New Macbook Air available to help.
ISSUE:
In the last couple of days I seem to be losing permissions to do things in my user profile which is the admin. Can't dump anything to trash without a password, mail will not open as it doesn't have permission anymore, can't move files around from folder to folder, Excel won't save as it is now read only, Firefox won't open as it thinks there is already an open version...Messages won't sync properly anymore or access address book to bring up peoples names to match the phone numbers... etc..etc.
Research showed the problem is likely user permissions and the cure is resetting. Knowing this has to be done via terminal after a COMMAND R boot into recovery mode I have tried everything to make this happen. No go! Apparently the partition required to boot into recovery never happened during install as the computer insists it is not there. Worse it will not default to internet recovery either. When I hold OPTION and boot I have only the HD visible and no recovery option to choose from.
I have created a 10.8 USB recovery stick (on my mac air) and can boot to that on the mini but there is no terminal option (as far as I can see) to allow me to reset the permissions. I also tried to boot to an old Leopard CD hoping that might work.. nada.
I have done a verify disk and repair disk permissions. All good. The computer works 100% fast and proper if I login under a new user profile so my issue appears not to be hardware related at all.
Given that I can't CMD R into any recovery is there any other way to reset these permissions?
Anyone know what would cause this to happen?
Thanks!!
Dave.In light of the fact there are other things Etre noted as issues I posted the lot. Sorry it's longer but thought I may lead you in the correct direction.

Yosemite: Server.app crash trying to modify users permissions
Hi,
I have just updated to Yosemite and purchased Yosemite Server App, then migrate from old volume's sys/server.app (osx 10.9.5 - server v. 3.0.3) with Migration Assistant tool.
Suddenly the application is crashing when I edit users permissions in "Archive" section. Restart is useless. Permissions on boot volume verified with diskutil looks fine.
Anyone, please, have some suggest?

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2. -

DBAYou got no responses because you posted in the wrong forum
Are you backing up to a tape or disk device? This error usually points to a media problem (not a DB problem). Can you backup the DB to disk and see if it works?
