• Backups for DB2 Databse.

Hi Experts,
One of our client  have SAP Version SAP ECC 6.0 EHP4 Ready on DB2 LUW 9.7 with windows 2003 Server X64 OS. I am new to DB2 Database. I have used SQL and ORACLE Databases and taken backups using these databases for SAP.
I need to know about the procedure to take the online and offline backups with DB2 LUW 9.7 Database.
Regards,
Vaibhav

Hi Vaibhav,
you have to use the "BACKUP DATABASE" command in DB2 CLP. You can get information about it in [DB2 Information Center|http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/db2luw/v9r7/topic/com.ibm.db2.luw.admin.cmd.doc/doc/r0001933.html]
Additionally you can read the Paper [A Practical Guide to Backup and Recovery|http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/db6?rid=/library/uuid/80e61772-e471-2c10-60b1-9529b69b50c5] which introduces Backup and Recovery with DB2 in relation to SAP software.
I think that might help you.

• How to Schedule a Backup in db2

Hi, Experts
We are using ECC6 (OS400 with DB2). i want to schedule a backup in db13 but system throwing error iSeries : Function not supported for DB2/400
Please tell me how to schedule a backup
Thanks & Regards
Venkat

Hi,
In Application(SAP) level you can't able to take Backup.
You can take backup from OS level.
GO SAVE command and schedule the backup...R3<SID>DATA and R3<SID>JRN...libraries you can take daily..
Monthly once you cane take Entire System Backup with offline.
If you want online backup you came go to BRMS..But it is licence product with IBM.
Thanks
Jibin.

• Backup of db2 with ECC6.0

hello experts can u answere this question.my company database is db2 with ECC 6.0.how can we take backup in sap level using db13. what are the prequisities we have to maintain in saplevel or database level.

Hello,
In db13, there are several database backup jobs (e.g. Database Backup into TSM, Database Backup to Device, Database Backup with Vendor Library).  Each of which issue db2 backup underneaht the cover (so that you can check the status from DB2 side as well as SAP side).
With the DB13's Database Backup job entries, you can specify full/incremental/incremental delta backup and the recurrence pattern.  One thing though is that DB13 only allows you to do "online" backup.  To do an offline backup, you still have to use DB2 command.

• Archive Files Log Backup in DB2

Hi,
I have archived files moved to /db2/TXT/log_archive from /db2/TXT/log_dir.
I have very less space configured for /db2/TXT/log_archive file system.
I don't have tape drive connected to production server to take backup of Archive log file to TAPE using DB13.
Currently I am taking Database backup to DISK not to TAPE and would like to take the archive log files (Offline transaction logs) backup also to DISK.
Please let me know the way out for this situation
Thanks

Hello,
I think brtools for this (brarchive) is not usable for db2 because this is typical for oracle and not supported for db2. For more information about the log management see note 913481.
Which DB2 version you´re using? If it is 9.5 the standard is an online backup includes logs so you´ve your archived log file in the online backup. If you´re using a DB2 version smaller then 9.5 you can include the parameter "include logs" in your backup command.

• Why to BACKUP DB2 before migration

Does anybody know why a backup of the complete source database DB2 is required?
Reading this in the guidelines sounds to me like a little horror-scenario! Any experience? thanks

Hi Anthony,
There are no horror stories, don't worry! The OMWB will not make any modification to your source DB2 database. The suggestion to make a backup of your source database is simply a standard recommendation made to migrators since many people tend to modify source databases in preparation for a migration and the forget how to undo these changes, and also since we cannot be responsible for any problems that third party software (like drivers) can cause. We have never had the OMWB cause problems on the source database since it simply reads from the source and never tries to make any modifications.
I hope this helps,
Tom.

• Flash Copy / BCV Backup on DB2 v9

Hello,
We are in the process of implementing BCV Backups or more commonly known as Flash Copy backups on our SAP databases.  Anyone out there running this in their shops?  Any tips?
Also, does anyone know if I restored from a split mirror image of a database that was in rollforward pending, does rolling forward through the end of logs or a PIT bring the database to a consistent state?  Is this supported by IBM and SAP?
Thanks guys!
Florencio

Thanks Raja!  It's good to hear that you've had success with this technology.  By the way, if you get a chance can you please review the steps outlined below on how we are going to implement our split backup process?  This may also be good basic resource material to other shops thinking of implementing the same technology for their SAP systems:
Backup Steps:
1.  Synch the disks (Establish).
2.  Suspend Database I/O - db2 "set write suspend for database"
3.  Split the disks.
4.  Resume Database I/O - db2 "set write resume for database"
5.  Mount the filesystems onto the Target System.
6.  Start DB2.
7.  Initialize the database as STANDBY - db2 "db2inidb $ as standby"
8.  Run a DB2 Backup.
9.  After backup completes, Stop DB2.
10.  Unmount filesystems.
11.  Send backup images to tape.
Restore Steps:
1.  Stop source database.
2.  Unmount filesystems.
3.  Reverse Establish from the target server to the source server.
4.  Split the disks
5.  Mount the filesystems.
6.  Bring up DB2
7.  Initialize the database as MIRROR.  db2 "db2inidb $ as mirror"
8.  Rollforward to end of logs or PIT.
9.  Activate DB
10.  DB and Basis Sanity Checks.
If the above steps should fail, then our contingency plan is to restore from the DB2 backup taken using the steps below.  The steps would be the normal steps when doing a DB restore.
1.  Mount the BCV backup directory to PRD.
2.  Issue DB2 restore command.
3.  Rollforward to end of logs or PIT.
4.  Activate DB
5.  DB and Basis Sanity Checks.
Let me know what you think.
Thanks,
Flo

• Scheduling backups in DB2

Can we use the DB13 to schedule a db/archive backup.
The sap documents talk about using db2tapemgr to do backups which is a command line interface.
Regards,
Dev

Hi,
scheduling the archiving of logfiles with db2tapemgr is not yet possible in DB13, but will be available with the next NetWeaver release after NW04s

• DB2 8.1(ver) Full Backup

HI Experts,
I am planning to take the full backup in DB2. I am using SAP on Windows server 2003 platform with DB2 8.1 Version.
Please share if any document is there, it will be great help for me.
Thanks in Advance.
Regards,
Raj

Hi Raj,
Db2 8.1 is already out of support from IBM as well as SAP. You may think of upgrading this to support version from 9.x .
Have you tried taking backup on db2 using db13.
Ensure you have set following parameters on the database
LOGRETAIN = ON
LOGARCHMETH1=<path of archive log>
In db13 you may configure backup to disk and specify backup folder path in initSID.sap
Hope this helps.

Deepak Kori

• DB2 backup alternatives

Hi Friends,
I´am very new in DB2.  I would like to know some alternatives for the DB2 database backup.
Could be an option to make an offline backup of all the file systems related to db2 in order to restore consistently?
What could be the impact?
We can assume that DB2 is down.
Thanks in advance
Enrique Sánchez

Hi,
As like other database, you should take offline, online and archive log backup regularly to maintain the consistency of your landscape. Offline backup depends upon whether system is production, quality etc. as during offline backup system will not be available so you can plan for every month or every 15 days..depends upon your business requirement.
Online backup and archive log backup should be scheduled daily.
E.g: if you have taken offline backup one month back and after that system crashed then you should restore with online backup and apply archive logs for point in time recovery.
Please check following book for backup on DB2:
[Db2 Admin Guide|http://maben.homeip.net/static/computers/sap/DB2/SAP%20on%20IBM%20DB2%20Universal%20database%20for%20UNIX%20and%20Windows%20Admin%20NW04.pdf]
Thanks

• DB2 V.8.2. backup /dev/null?

Hello,
we will make a sap upgrade from 46C to 47EXT with a 1,7 Terabyte DB2 V.8.2.2 database. We are using as a backup strategy. SAN-Splitt. In the upgrade after activating the logretain and userexit, we are forced to make a backup. We have to trick the database and tell her, that we already have done a backup (over BCV-Splitt). Is there a faster way to make a backup as db2 backup db <SID> to /dev/null?
Regards,
Alexander

Hi Alexander,
in this case you can use db2dart to turn off backup pending state.
Best regards, Jens

• Log files can be applied after an offline backup is restored?

When reading the Admin Guide I see above possibility.
I guess in that case the offline backup must be done in the Database Maintenance Mode: QUIESCE.
I think if the offline backup is done after the DB is shutdown, no log files can be applied.
Would you please confirm and share your experience on this?
Thanks a lot!

Hi Jennifer,
only to complete the answer of Jens, or "say" it less complex:
1.) Yes you could roll forward an offline backup. DB2 always end in rollforward pending state after a restore independent of the backup type (online | offline). In case of an offline backup you could complete the restore without logs, otherwise not.
2.) The offline backup is done in a special mode, it is neither online nor quiesced. Nobody can log on to the database as long the offline backup is running. To start the offline backup, you have to deactivate the database as described by Jens.
Best regards

• DB2 v9.1fp4 on suse linux 10sp2 - redirect restor PRD to DEV

Hi All,
First of all thank you, for valuable TIME.
issue:
My development server got crashed due to failure of dedicated SAN. in simple lost every thing. since, even DB2 backups happening to SAN.
requirement:
As we lost all the developments and configuration of development server, we need build a DEV from PRD.
Steps taken:
a. we have installed Suse 10sp2 followed by db2 v9.1 fp4 and SAP ERP6.0 sr2.
b. taken backup of db2 & sap kernel backup by tar command followed by SAP db13 backup along with logs - for newly installed Development server.
hostname - development
SID - DEV
c. I need to restore development server with sid DEV from the backup of production with sid PRD.
          To get all the data {development data, transaction data & configuration etc..}
Problem
Till now i haven't worked on DB2 restore, and the current requirement is to dump data from PRD in to DEV.
i.e.. db2 redirect restore
current landscape status:
Both production and development {freshly installed} are up and working fine.
PRD with all the live data, DEV freshly installed and without data.
Need to restore data from PRD to DEV.
Database: DB2 v9.1 fp4
OS: SUSE linux 10 sp2
SAP solution: ERP 6.0 sr2
Backup of PRD: in to SAN box {backup folder}, backup triggered by DB13 with include logs option.
I request you to guide me in understanding and performing the restoration.
i.e.. the steps to be performed along with the necessary precautions to be take to avoid problems.
PRD data to  DEV.
Thank you very much your time.

• Hardware migration - Windows 2003 DB2

Hello Experts,
We are planning a hardware migration from our present setup consisting of Windows 2003 Standard with DB2 to Windows 2003 Enterprise with DB2.
I would like your suggestions on the following points:
1] Which method of migration should be used
        - system copy (migration creating export files)
        - database backup and restore
2] What all optimization steps can be followed before and after the migration
Waiting for your valuable suggestions.
Thank you & Kind regards

Hello
you speak about a simple homogeneous system copy (because you do not change the dabase type - DB2 to Oracle for exemple - or the OS - Windows to Unix)
To ways to perform that :
- if you do not change the server, may be a simple upgrade of the OS is sufficent
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc737287.aspx
- if you change the server, you can perform the upgrade by :
1. making a full offline backup of the source system (database)
2. performing the sapinst (homogeneous copy / backup/restore)
The sapinst will help you (asking you to restore the data)
The steps are :
installing the Oracle binaries
installing SAP with sapinst (binaries)
restoring DB2 database (with the offline backup)
restarting DB2 (I don't know DB2 specific steps)
ending installation
Let see the documentation
service.sap.com/instguides
Note 389530 (for other releases search for the relevant note)
Hope this will help you
