Backup recommendations for G5 10.5.8?

I'm wondering what the best backup solutions are for a G5 running 10.5.8.  I'm open to online options and whatever other kinds of options there are. I'd also appreciate any advice on options I should avoid. (Unfortunately I have never backed up my machine, so I'm brand new at this.)
Thanks in advance for any advice you may have.
Chris

Hi Chris,
Personally I'd avoid online backups, they're slow, expensive, and not very useful if say your Hard Drive goes down.
I strongly recommend that you get a good Firewire drive to Clone your Internal drive to ASAP!

Many of those come with Backup SW, or...
Get carbon copy cloner to make an exact copy of your old HD to the New one...

Or SuperDuper...

Or the most expensive one & my favorite, Tri-Backup...

  • DPM Off site backup recommendations for all workloads without using tapes

    Hi All
I'm looking for recommendations for off site backups avoiding tapes if at all possible.
    My scenario is as follows:
We are soon to be migrating our backups to DPM 2012 R2 and will be backing up all workloads to disk, this will be around 10TB initially but could ramp up to over 30TB as more workloads are brought in.
What we would like to do is remove the need for tapes and shove our backups offsite onto some sort of cloud storage. We've looked at the obvious Azure online option but unfortunately this doesn't support all workloads (just File, SQL and Hyper-V).
We would need a decent retention period (7 years).
We'd like to go as direct as possible to the cloud from DPM without the need to locally double up or stage.
I'm very interested to know what's out there and what are people using.
    Cheers!

    Yes but...
As it's going to be writing potentially GB/TB of data to the VTL file it might not be the most efficient to go directly across the cloud. There are lots of issues latency, speed, contention, etc. to take in to consideration. Most of the Cloud Storage appliances
like StorSimple, BridgeStor, etc. have the smarts of cope with variables such as above. Once the complete file is on disk moving it to the cloud is relatively easy.
I agree that you'll be duplicating data but it would be far safer to write locally then move to the cloud.
A secondary is a good option too but as you're looking for long term retention, 7 years, then it may be very tricky with file data due to the 64 VSS snapshot limit. For other workloads it would be fine but would require a significant capital investment to
create the infrastructure as DPM doesn't play well with new features like Storage Spaces.

  • Online backup recommendations for Aperture 3?

I'm interested in an online backup for just my Aperture library and would like to know if anyone has a recommendation and how it works. I have a vault archived to an external hard drive, and don't know, because of the way Aperture 3's library is stored, if I can do it easily or not. My library is only around 20GB right now, and would like to find a way do to incremental backups online, after the initial backup. I've heard about Crashplan, Mozy, Carbonite, Smugmug, etc., but don't know how to find a good one without wasting time. Thanks.

Referenced vs. managed should make no difference to a backup solution because a managed Aperture library isn't actually a file; it's a directory. It only has the illusion of being a single file when viewed in Finder.
An incremental backup solution can't actually tell the difference. The only reason Finder knows is because Apple puts an extended attribute on the directory node which flags Finder to not display it as a normal directory (but it is a normal directory). But any other software not programmed to check for this special flag would never know to treat the library any differently than it would treat any other directory hierarchy.
BTW, although you can descend into the Aperture Library and snoop around, you should NOT change anything. This can cause corruption as Aperture also maintains indexes & meta-data inside the library which it updates accordingly whenever it makes a change. If you were to manually make a change, you wouldn't also be able to update the appropriate meta-data and that will cause problems.

You can redirect <Profile>\<AppData>\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup to a folder on another drive using NTFSLink (shell ext., might only work on XP) or Junction (cmd line tool).
In essence you move the existing folder to a new location, create an empty folder where the old one used to be, then get the operating system/tool to link the two togther and silently redirect any file operation on the old location through to the new one.

  • Recommendations for external hd for Time Machine backups

After having my 1TB G-Tech G-Drive Q desktop external h.d. crap out on me for a second or third time, this time for good, I give up on G-Tech. (I also had a faulty 500GB G-Tech portable which had to be replaced.)
For many reasons, my iMac's Time Machine backups have to be stored on an external hard drive. Two or three times, the external h.d. has become corrupted or something and has had to be reformatted, losing all the previous backups and starting all over again. This time, since the external h.d. is toast, I have no backups at all.
My MAIN question: Do any of you have a recommendation for an external hard drive - probably desktop, but not necessarily - preferably 1TB - which is RELIABLE?
Is this h.d. corruption/repeated failure a function of Time Machine? The hard drive itself?
What good is Time Machine if we lose backups all the time?

    limerick2010 wrote:
Sorry to butt in, but I'm on the lookout for a solution to make a secondary, offsite back-up of my company's data. I was also looking at the usage of external hard disk for the purpose but am stumbling at a very basic question.
If the first disk(say 1TB) runs out of space and I connect a new hard-disk, wouldn't Time Machine back up all the stuff previously backed up, all over again on the new disk?
Exactly. Bt you're talking about two very different things: secondary backups vs. not enough room for primary backups.
The whole point of secondary backups is having a second, separate set, so if something happens to the primary set (lost, corrupted, disk fails, etc.), you have another complete set. As noted in the link in my previous post, it's also a good idea to use a different app for the secondary set, in case there's a problem with the primary app.
If your Time Machine disk gets full, you have three choices:
Let Time Machine start deleting old backup(s) automatically, to make room for new ones. You don't need to keep them forever -- a few months should be plenty for most users.
Get a new disk and start backing-up to it. Keep the old one "on the shelf" until you're sure you don't need the old backups any longer. You can always view and restore from them via the +*Browse ...+* option, per #17 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Get a larger disk, copy the old backups to it, and continue backing-up to the new one. See #18 in the FAQ.

  • DVD disks recommendations for backups

I have 25GB of photos, and need asap to back them all up. External drive is nice, but not now.
What DVD disks are recommended for this ?
Which ones have a better protection, like double, triple layers...?
    Thanks!

Since my iPhoto Library is 25GB, I'll need about 6 disks. Will it work ?
Or I need Roxio's "Toast", which is quite expensive ?
    Any free alternativers ?
You will need something - I use the backup program that comes with .Mac (mobile me)
Or you can export all your photos and manually break them down into single DVD folders and burn them
There are other packages that will burn multiple DVDs - but since I do not use them I can not speak to them

  • Help needed for choosing Cisco recommended VM Backup solution for UCCE & CUCM 8.5

    Hi
We are planning to install a reliable backup solution for our UCCE platform ( ESX(i) 4.x & 5.x  )
if someone can share the details of Cisco recommended VM ware backup solution for UCCE 8.5 , it would be really helpful .
    Regards
    Renni John

    Hello,
    -    Snapshot procedure of VMs is not supported by Cisco for UCCE servers.  Please refer table "VMware Feature Support for Contact Center 8.0(2) through 10.x" on below link:
    o    http://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/Unified_Communications_VMware_Requirements#Supported_Editions_and_Features_of_VMware_vSphere_ESXi.2C_VMware_vCenter_and_VMware_vSphere_Client
    -    Same above link refers to use "Copy" feature of VM to take backup of servers, but it is a very lengthy procedure which requires extensive command line knowledge of UCS.  Moreover VM should be shut down for this procedure.   This can be used as one time backup of server; but cant be used as scheduled back up method.

  • HD for backup recommendations

Does anyone have specific recommendations for a backup drive to be used with time machine. I have the 640gb version and need a simple, easy to use device. Seagate, WD, etc. Any suggestions would be appreciated. There are so many choices!
    Thanks,

The most popular ones I've seen on this forum are the OWC Mercury series and Lacie Quadra D2 series, both have lots of connections 2 FW 800 connections, Firwire 400, USB & even e-Sata. You can find the OWC's at:

  • Recommendations for both Backup and Defrag utilities?

    Hi:
Well, we have finally broken down and purchased an external hard drive to perform backups... only to discover there is no built-in utility on the computer for doing so. Does anyone have an inexpensive (or free) recommendation for good backup utilities? Same goes for a defrag utility?
    Thanks! Rich

    Hi, Rich & Tom!
I've been using SuperDuper! lately and am really impressed with it's user interface and ease of use. However, the latest versions require OS X 10.3.9 or later to run this program and earlier versions apparently aren't available for download, at least from the developer's site. I've used CarbonCopyCloner (CCC), too, and it would be an excellent way to clone the startup volume to a volume on the new drive, resulting in a duplicate of the startup drive. The current version will work with OS X 10.2.x. If Rich purchased a FireWire drive (versus a USB drive, which isn't bootable with the G4), the clone should be bootable from the external drive.
Like Tom indicated, OS X already has automatic defrag abilities built in. Moreover, when one moves files from one volume to another one, the moved files are defragmented in the process (as long as sufficient free space is available on the destination drive). Thus, a basic defrag of the entire hard disk volume occurs when CCC, Disk Utility's Restore option, or SuperDuper! is used to clone the volume to an empty volume. I regularly clone for backup and find that this takes care of even huge video files that can sometimes overwhelm OS X's built-in defragmenting after a lot of editing. I have a defrag utility as part of Prosoft's Drive Genius, but have never once needed it. Moreover, I'm somewhat leery of running such a utility without having first backed up, which really negates it's potential usefulness, seeing that the backup cloning effectively does this in the first place.
Personally, having an external FW drive, I'd clone the current system to the external (or to a partition there), boot to it and test to insure that all went well, and then install Tiger fresh on the internal drive, using the Migration Assistant to transfer my user data and applications to the new OS. I'd then update my applications on the Tiger volume (and insure Tiger compatibility) and then test the new Tiger volume by running from it for at least a week or more before deciding to erase the old 10.2 volume. When satisfied that everything is stable, I'd then clone the Tiger volume to the other drive for backup.

  • Advice needed for backup strategy for office

My office is switching from PC to Mac (yay!) and I'm in charge of setting up the system. We'll be using 4 iMacs and a Mac Mini Server with ethernet connections. I'd like to ask what is recommended for backing up these computers.
My thought would be to back up the iMacs separately from the server - is this definitely the way to go?
I'm thinking to get a 3TB Time Capsule for the 4 iMacs so that Time Capsule will do automatic backups.
    - Is it OK to have 4 iMacs backup to one Time Capsule like this?
As for the Mac Mini server, I'm not sure how to best back it up.
Since it has two 1TB drives, I'm thinking of using one drive for data and having it automatically backup to the other internal drive. Any thoughts on this idea?
Or, it is possible to connect an external USB drive to the Time Capsule's USB port, and have Time Machine backup the server to the external drive?
    Any advice is greatly appreciated!

The TC is really a home solution.
For business I think you should consider something extra.
Although 4 computers and a server is not a big setup, it is worthwhile doing a more professional backup and use something more professional than Time Machine.
    For instance..
    http://www.retrospect.com/au/products/mac
I have not used it.. but I see it recommended in business / larger installs. It is not cheap but well worth considering.
I would not use the internal disk of the server for backup.
As for the Mac Mini server, I'm not sure how to best back it up.
Since it has two 1TB drives, I'm thinking of using one drive for data and having it automatically backup to the other internal drive. Any thoughts on this idea?
You can raid the two disks if you don't need the capacity.
But backup to a USB drive plugged in.. USB3 drives are cheap and speedy. Much more reliable than using network drives.
Raid for integrity of working data.. backup to separate change over disks.
So weekly you change over the USB drive for backup and store the other one at home.
I'm thinking to get a 3TB Time Capsule for the 4 iMacs so that Time Capsule will do automatic backups.
    - Is it OK to have 4 iMacs backup to one Time Capsule like this?
You can do this.. It is fine to have 4 Macs backup to it. But if you are not using the wireless router it is a waste.. you can just backup over network to the server.. TM works fine on network.
You can buy another 3TB USB drive for backup of the clients.. normally though you want all the working data on the server and back that up. You are thinking a more peer to peer model.. once you introduce the server you can work on a more server client model where the current files are held on the server.

  • What is the best free backup solution for Hyper-V R2/2012? CSV support is necessary

In my research I found these apps. All of them are limited in some way but they do the job:
    Veeam Backup Free Edition v7
    Altaro Hyper-V Backup
    Unitrends Enterprise Backup
    PHD Virtual Backup for Hyper-V
    HV Backup from CodePlex
    Windows Server Backup (WSB)

  • Status of Backup Assistant for Contact Information

Can some one tell me (preferably a Verizon technical resource) the status of Backup Assistant for Contact Information?
I upgraded to a new phone a few weeks ago, and when searching MyVerizon saw the availability of the "free" contact backup capability...     It is not really free for me, because I don't have a data/text plan, so I had to pay for the app download and sync text transfer.    I figured it would be worth a few dollars to have the backup capability and ability to enter data from a keyboard instead of the numeric pad (I have a flip phone without a qwerty keyboard).     The sync import of my phone's contact list worked fine, and I spent quite a bit of time updating addresses online...   However, the changes online were not exported back to my phone, so my  work added no value me.
I attempted to wait a few days to see if a regular update would resolve the problem...   Tried making a few updates today--the web application seemed buggier than a few weeks ago...  If I tried to input more that a one field, it refused to save the contact.   I could update by doing small updates and saving, but this was painful...   Tried several times to update the ICE contacts--they would appear to be OK, but after a save the changes were lost...
Tried reading documentation to see if there was an explanation of how to download changes made online to phone...     Could find nothing other than instructions to download to a "new" phone...
Came to the forum to see if there was a message here that would help me...   I was very disappointed to see that the Backup Assistant has apparently been "broken" for several weeks with no apparent resolution timeframe available.
As an IT guy, I was appalled that Verizon does not have anything on the web site that warns users that there is a problem with the site and gives an approximate resolution time for the problem.    This is always a priority for my group--make the users aware of the problem and give them status on resolution progress.  Verizon's lack of information has let me waste time and money trying to work with an application that is known to be broken.
    Key questions for me:
    1)  Can the cost of downloading backup assistant and the syncing be refunded to me?   (The service to date has only provides me with a frustrating online update experience with no benefit to me on my phone.)
    2)  When will the site be functioning with normal capability?
    3)  What is normal function?   Are the problems that I have had with updates due to the problem discussed in other posts or are they standard features of buggy code?
    4)  If the application were working normally, how would one do updates online and have those updates exported back to the phone?

  • HT1766 Can the backup file for a IPAD be stored and accessed on an external drive?

Can the backup file for a IPAD be stored on an external drive to free up space on a computer?

There are some wireless external hard drives that can be used with the iPad.
The Kingston Wi-Drive, which costs $50 for the 16 Gigabyte, and then $30 more for every 16 gigs more. It works by you turning it on and then accessing the files on it from an app that you download on your iDevice. You can access music, movies, and other stuff. No connections or anything, it works like a WiFi connection, you connect to it from the setting on the iPad under wireless networks.
Then there is the Seagate GoFlex, which some would recommend over the Wi-Drive. But this one costs $199 and had 500 Gigabytes of storage. It works the sameway as the Kingston: no wires, runs over its wireless connection. You can actually fit up to 300 HD movies on it.
