Backup via TC w/o Internet Access?

Hi! I am looking to use my Time Capsule solely for the purpose of backing up my hard drive. I do not have any wireless or "wired" internet access. Is there a way to install/configure Time Capsule to a MacBook and use Time Capsule to back up the MacBook's hard drive on a regular basis even if the computer lacks all internet connection capabilities? If so, could you please let me know how I would go about using Time Capsule as a back-up device without any internet connection? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Chris B

Welcome to the discussions!
You don't need an internet connection on either the Time Capsule or your computer(s) to backup using wireless or ethernet.
But, you will not be able to perform any firmware updates on the Time Capsule without an internet connection.
Follow the instructions in the Time Capsule Setup Guide and the guided setup in AirPort Utility to set up the Time Capsule and your computer. You will get a warning that the TC does not have an internet connection, but you can choose to click the "ignore" check box and all will be well.

  • Connect an old iMac to a MacBook via ethernet to gain internet access?

    I have a 2008 white macbook running 10.6.8
    I have a 2004 lamshade G4 800mhz imac running 10.4.11
I do not have a wireless card for the imac and it is no where near my router.
Is there any way to connect the imac to the macbook with an ethernet cable and use the macbooks internet on the imac? If so, can you give me the step by step directions?

Connect an ethernet cable from the MacBook to the iMac.
From the Macbook, do System Preferences > Sharing and turn ON "Internet Sharing.
Set the options so they look like this:
except click the checkbox so internet sharing is "on." (I didn't turn it on when I made the screnshot.)
That should route internet servtce from the wireless access of the MB to the iMac.
You should be able to use a standard cat5 patch cable but. if that doesn't work, try either connecting via an ethernet hub or use a crossover cat5 cable. I think the iMac is new enough to not require a crossover but I add this as an option.

  • Wireless Internet access via requires unplugging cable modem -

I have a brand new MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard (10.6.1) and Airport Express (7.4.2). I have high speed Internet via Comcast/cable modem. I spent 30 minutes with the Apple Tech Support folks and was finally able to get wireless internet access. However, after I shutdown and reboot, the only way I can wireless internet is to unplug the internet cable from both the wall plug and cable modem and unplug the modem, both for about two minutes. This isnt what I had in mind when I crossed over from the dark side (PC laptop world) and am having buyer's remorse. Does anyone know how I can fix this problem (i dont want to unplug cables before each session on the internet)?

    Mr. Timmons,
Thank you so much for the response.  I thought the complete reboot would work, but apparently not.  I followed the directions precisely, even waiting a few minutes longer than suggested for each of the steps.  My air express is still blinking yellow.  I think the issue has something to do with the DHCP and the IP address which are diifferent. The IP address is one series of number (starts with 169), and the LAN IP address is another number (starts with 10). Status on airport express show yellow for internet connection, and yellow for no DSN servers. When I go to the internet tab of airport utility, it shows the iPv4 address starts wutg the 169 number. When I click on the network tab, the DHCP range starts with the 10 number.  When I open the Network Options window, the iPv4 DHCP range starts with the 10 number.  I am at a loss as to how to get them to match up (with either the 169 number or the 10 number).  V/R sjbgtmo

    Greetings all,
I am needing assistance in how to lockdown access to Local Computer Management and Windows Backup via Group Policy for users that access RDS service. I have followed this awesome guide - h t t p://w w w.it.ltsoy.com/windows/lock-down-remote-desktop-services-server-2012/
      - but it is missing two important resources that I would like to lock down.Currently, I have successfully locked down Control Panel for users via Group Policy, but I cannot find any group policy or guide on how to restrict user access
to Computer Management (different to Server Manager). When using Win-X shortcut to open the 'Administrator's shortcuts' near the windows icon, I have locked down everything except Computer Management. Computer Management gives direct access to Disk Management,
Shares etc, which are locked down for users. But Windows Server Backup is still accessible. Can someone please guide me on how to restrict access to both Computer Management and Windows Server Backup.
    Thanks in advance.

  • ATV2 via ethernet to imac with no internet access - possible?

I have the ATV2 and its works great - and i can use it for streaming my own films that we have produced and encoded to mp4 - straight to my 36 inch TV in our living room...
...BUT I want to take my 36 inch TV with my iMac to a wedding exhibition and play my films on my 36 inch tv from my iMac - so i thought connect why dont i connect my ATV2 via an ethernet cable to my iMac then HMDI cable from the AVT2 to the TV and i should be able to access all the film content that is in iTunes as HD mp4 content on my iMac so prospective clients can see mp4 HD versions of our films -  as at the exhibition they will be viewing them from about 3 feet away rather than the usual 10 -12 feet when viewing a DVD at home.
Would this work anyone tried it? i have read some folks have had problems doing this as they need to have internet access as they are accessing their .mac account for home sharing and with no internet avaibale i wont have that facility and dont need it at the exhibition.

Yes, I'd certainly try it before you go. I've tested this on the Apple TV 1 and confirmed it works but haven't tested it with my Apple TV 2.
If worst comes to worst using a cheap router will work, you don't need to connect it to the internet.

  • Load Balance guest Internet access via two different DMZ zones at two sites

    Hi Sir,
My customer has the following unified wireless guest access requirement:
    - There are 2 internet links and dmz zones at two different locations, Site A and Site B
    - Data centre is at Site A
    - WiSM is proposed to be installed at the Cat 6500 in Site A
    - Lightweight AP are distributed across Site A, Site B and other branches
    - Only one anchor WLC is proposed at Site A, DMZ zone to provide guest internet access
My customer would like to load balance the guest via the two internet link at Site A and Site B but with the same SSID across all locations. Can it be done since only one anchor at Site A? How about puttting another anchor WLC at Site B, DMZ zone? But how can i establish two EoIP tunnel to two different anchor WLC from a single WiSM?
    Thanks for your help
    Delon

You can... but you can't control where the traffic will flow. The wlc will determine which DMZ wlc it will use. The wlc will load balance, but traffic in site A might go to site B. I currently have deployed that senerio in multiple client installations....

  • Conneced to wireless router but no internet access via wireless

I don't recall the physical connections being directly attached to the router.  The router in question is a Linksys WRT54G/GL/GS.  My initial thought was since we rolled out Voip fairly recently one of our phones might have ganked the IP address, but that is not the case.  Each of them have their own IP addresses and I don't see any conflicts.  I am also able to ping the router and log into it remotely from my office, which is in a different city. Could it possibly be a firmware issue?

    Hi Everyone,
One of my offices' routers is broadcasting but has no internet access.  The office does have internet if you hardwire in but outside of that nothing has worked so far in regards to the WiFi.  I have power cycled the router and modem to no avail and DHCP is enabled but no one can get online via WiFi.  It seemed to just up and decide one morning that it was not going to allow internet access.

  • Able to connect ipad 2 to iphone 4s personal hotspot via bluetooth or wifi, but no internet access when connected via wifi.

I am able to connect my ipad 2 to an iphone 4s personal hotspot via bluetooth or wifi.  The problem is that I only have internet access with a bluetooth connection. Both are running ios 6.1.2 and I have tried to reset both to factory settings. Any suggestions would be reatly appreciated.

Please don't shout!   Using all uppercase means shouting on the internet.  If your keyboard is stuck please say so, otherwise people will think you are being obnoxious.
Now the first question is, when you are saying connecting to personal hotspot, have you always been using the iPhone to connect to the internet?   Are you someplace where the only place to connect is available via tethering to the iPhone's celluar network?  Or do you have other options?

  • IMac G4 800 mhz internet access via LAN very slow

We have a G4 800mhz running 10.3. Memory is 768K. The only use for this machine is as a music server. It is connected to the internet via LAN; internet access is extremely slow - pages take an incredibly long time to load. Download/Upload speeds are about the same as I see on my Macbook Pro so I don't think it is the connected to the internet. Is there anything one can do to troubleshoot very laggy browser performance?

You may need to turn to Activity Monitor (or "AM") in Applications > Utilities to see if a runaway background process is eating up processor cycles. If you've not run AM before, on first launch its "Show" window defaults to "My Processes." That will tell only part of the story. Change it to "All Processes"to get the full picture.
Now highlight the "%CPU" column to sort by processor usage. Best to check with no user apps running other than AM. Let AM percolate five to ten seconds to let it finish its first poll. What you are looking for are any processes that are using 15 percent or more of "%CPU" with nothing running other than AM. If you find one, post its name here and we can advise how to deal with it.
However, don't get your expectations too high that a process has gone rogue. Part of it is simply a lack of speed by today's standards. I recently upgraded a friends iMac G4 800 from Panther to Tiger so it could run the latest browsers and it was still terribly slow compared to my PowerBook G4 1Ghz running the same level OS. The iMac 800 has a slow logic board bus (100mHz).

  • Win2012R2 VM internet access via WIFI fine but not through a client's Web Proxy Server

    Hi
I have a number of VMs running on my win 8.1 laptop. They normally access the internet via the host WIFI in a bridged config.  No real issues tho sometimes it takes a reboot to clear out any stale DNS  entries.
Now when I go on a client site my internet access on the host laptop is via a web proxy on a LAN connection. If I want this same access running on a standalone "all in" VM , I have a issue since it does not know about the web proxy and it is not
even on the client's LAN . No internet, means no Azure or Office 365.....
So this doesn't make any difference
Is there a way around this .. do I need share a folder/drive   or authenticate myself on the Proxy, from the VM.
    Anyone had this issue?

    Hi Daniel,
    >>Now when I go on a client site my internet access on the host laptop is via a web proxy on a LAN connection.
"LAN connection" means physical NIC (Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller) ?
" web proxy " means adding a proxy server IP in IE ?
Bounding the NIC (Realtek PCIe ) to external virtual switch then connect all VMs to that external virtual switch ,still can not access ?

  • Self-Assigned IP via router - no internet access - HELP!

    Hi all,
I have 10.5.7 leopard installed on my C2D Macbook.
In the past, I never had any issues connecting to wireless routers with internet connection.
As of late, I am currently getting 'Self assigned IP address' which does not allow me to connect to the internet. It is connected to the router, but just no internet access. I can see the other Shared computers (Windows PC and mate's macbook pros) but just no web access. And they do not have a problem connecting to the internet.
    I have attempted the following:
    1) Turned on & off Airport.
    2) Deleted network connections and re-created them, rebooted in safe & PRAM modes.
    3) Deleted router Key chain permissions & changed permissions to 'access all'.
    4) Deleted plist files from /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/
    5) Off Firewall & verified against the logs to ensure it is disabled.
    6) Re-installed 10.5.7 combo updates.
    7) Rebooted router, changed router channel, etc. Router is on the latest Netgear firmware.
    8) Assigned IP address and entered the DNS, router values manually in Leopard.
    9) Clicked on renew DHCP lease several thousands to no avail..
Occasionally, DHCP will work. But once I reboot & awake the mac the internet connection drops and 'Self Assigned IP' happens.
Does anyone else have any ideas? My only conclusion is that the bug is in Leopard 10.5.7.

Make sure your router has the latest firmware. If you are out of range of the WiFI or in a marginal area, this error simply indicates that your computer is not able to access an internet router/server and simply assigns the default IP address which is of the form 169.254.xxx.xxx. Basically it's a flag that lets you know you are not connected to a DHCP server.

  • No internet access via router

    Hi
After installing a Microsoft critical update late night my PC is still connected to my BT Infinity router but I can't get internet access (I'm able to log into a BT hotspot however). I've tried eveyting I know (rebooting etc) but nothing to seems to work. I've also tried system restore but it won't let me go back. Before I try the refresh option has anyone any other ideas?
    Cheers

The last crical update from microsoft was for an IE fix so maybe try another browser

  • "No internet access" on Guest Wifi

We upgraded our router the other day, we made a backup as well as a txt copy of the config file for copying in various commands to the new router .
We have a Secure wifi for employees and a Guest wifi for visitors. We have a server doing the DHCP(10.27.131.8) for both the secure (10.27.131.0 network) and for the Guest (10.26.131.0 network). The Secure wifi is working as it should be - the Guest however is not. Visitors can connect and get a valid IP address from the 10.26.131.0 network but have no internet access. Everything else has stayed the same - no changes to the AP's.
Again we copied the config from the old to the new with a few minor changes but nothing that should effect the Guest wifi.
I did an ipconfig after connecting to the Guest Wifi and I can get a correct IP address 10.26.131.214, Default GW: 10.26.131.1.
I enclosed the config from my router is anybody could shed some light,
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
I also apologize for my late answer.
I appears your ACL 101 that filters traffic entering the Fa0/1.20 is not correctly written to allow DHCP requests to be processed by the router. The attempt has been made - but it is not correct. In particular, check out the second entry in the ACL 101:
access-list 101 permit udp any host 10.27.131.8 eq bootps
It allows all DHCP messages that are already targeted to 10.27.131.8, the DHCP server. However, such targeted DHCP messages may be used by clients only after they know who the DHCP server is in the first place. Until then, the requests are targeted to 255.255.255.255 and sourced from 0.0.0.0. Such packets are not allowed by any entry in the ACL 101 and are therefore dropped even before the DHCP Relay Agent can process them. That would explain why your clients actually cannot obtain IP address via DHCP in VLAN 20.
We need to add the following entry immediately before or after the existing second entry in the ACL 101:
access-list 101 permit udp any host 255.255.255.255 eq bootps
You may accomplish this by the following sequence of commands directly pasted into the global configuration:
    ip access-list resequence 101 10 10
    ip access-list extended 101
15 permit udp any host 255.255.255.255 eq bootps
    end
The first line will cause the individual entries of the ACL 101 to be internally numbered, starting with the sequence number 10 and incrementing by 10 for each subsequent entry. The second line enters the ACL 101, treating it as a named ACL, allowing us to use the extended editing features. Finally, the third line starting with the sequence number 15 will cause the entry to be added between the existing first (seq no 10) and second (seq no 20) entry. It must be entered including the sequence number, otherwise the line will be added at the end of the ACL.
Would you mind trying out this modification? The former corrections with the NAT I have described earlier must be applied as well.
    Best regards,
    Peter

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 7.1. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.
You can no longer update to iOS 6.x, or down grade the iOS.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and antivirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 7.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.
How to Upgrade to iOS 7
The iOS 7.0 update requires around 2.5 GB of storage space, so if your iPad is almost full, you may need to clear up some space. You can check your available space in Settings -> General -> Usage.
There are two ways to upgrade to iOS 7: You can use your Wi-Fi connection, or you can connect your iPad to your PC and update through iTunes. We'll go over each method.
    To upgrade using Wi-Fi:
Note: If your iPad's battery is under 50%, you will want to plug it into your charger while performing the update.
    Go into the iPad's Settings.
Locate and tap "General" from the menu on the left.
The second option from the top is "Software Update". Tap this to move into the update settings.
Tap "Download and Install". This will start the upgrade, which will take several minutes and will reboot your iPad during the process. If the Download and Install button is grayed out, trying clearing up some space. The space required by the update is mostly temporary, so you should gain most of it back after iOS 7 is installed.
Once the update is installed, you may have to run through the initial steps of setting up your iPad again. This is to account for new features and settings.
    To upgrade using iTunes:
First, connect your iPad to your PC or Mac using the cable provided when you purchased your device. This will allow iTunes to communicate with your iPad.
You will also need the latest version of iTunes. Don't worry, you will be prompted to download the latest version when you launch iTunes. Once it installs, you may be asked to setup iCloud by logging into your iTunes account. If you have a Mac, you may be prompted on whether or not you want to enable the Find my Mac feature.
Now you are ready to begin the process:
If you upgraded iTunes earlier, go ahead and launch it. (For many, it will launch automatically when you plug in your iPad.)
Once iTunes is launched, it should automatically detect that a new version of the operating system exists and prompt you to upgrade to it. Choose Cancel. Before updating, you will want to manually sync your iPad to make sure everything is up to date.
After canceling the dialog box, iTunes should automatically sync with your iPad.
If iTunes doesn't automatically sync, you can manually do it by selecting your iPad within iTunes, clicking on the File menu and choosing Sync iPad from the list.
After your iPad has been synced to iTunes, select your iPad within iTunes. You can find it on the left side menu under Devices.
From the iPad screen, click on the Update button.
After verifying that you want to update your iPad, the process will begin. It takes a few minutes to update the operating system during which time your iPad may reboot a few times.
After updating, you may be asked a few questions when your device finally boots back up. This is to account for new settings and features.
     Cheers, Tom
