Backward compatability of Windows 8.1 apps

I have an app developed in windows 8 and then migrated it to 8.1 and did some major enhancements on top of it.Now business would like to go back to windows 8.
Is my windows 8.1 app is having backward compatibility?. I tried installing 8.1 app on windows 8 machine then it is saying that "The package is not digitally signed".
Thanks & Regards

  • How to make backward compatibility of windows phone 8.1 app for windows phone 7?

I developed windows phone 8.1 app which is in windows phone store. Now, i want to make this app compatible for windows 7 also. Is it possible, if yes then how?

It may be that you are using non-backward compatible capabilities in your Windows Phone 8.1 app(s).
Developers that want to develop for different OS's usually have platforms with the different OS's on them for developing applications so they work on each platform.
I suppose you developed for Windows phone 8.1 rather than Windows phone 7. Therefore your app runs on a different framework than a Windows phone 7 has as well as probably newer hardware with greater capabilities.
So you will probably need to purchase an older phone that came with Windows phone 7 in order to develop for. I couldn't find documentation like the last link below (App capabilities and hardware requirements for Windows Phone 8) for Windows phone 7
from Microsoft but maybe you can.
Windows Phone OS 7.1 - Developing a Windows Phone Application from Start to Finish
    Types of Applications
The Windows Phone application platform provides two frameworks for developing applications:
    Silverlight
The Silverlight framework supports event-driven, XAML-based application development.
    XNA
The XNA Framework supports loop-based games.
Silverlight and XNA can also be combined in a single application.
The following table lists some of the criteria that you can use to determine whether you should use Silverlight or the XNA Framework for your Windows Phone application. With Windows Phone OS 7.1, you can combine Silverlight and XNA into one application.
For more information about Silverlight and XNA, see
The Silverlight and XNA Frameworks for Windows Phone. For more information about the application platform, see
Application Platform Overview for Windows Phone.
What's New in Windows Phone 8.1
Platform convergence with Windows Store apps
Windows Phone 8.1 introduces an important change in the Windows Phone developer ecosystem. In this release, Windows Phone converges with the Windows Store apps platform into a single developer platform that runs the same types of apps—Windows Runtime apps.
Platform convergence began in Windows Phone 8, which supports a small subset of Windows Runtime APIs, but which differs from Windows in many core areas. In Windows Phone 8.1, there’s so much more in common—a much larger API set, a similar app model
and life cycle, a shared toolset, a common UI framework—Windows Phone and Windows Store app developer platforms truly have become one, single development platform.
Of course there are still some small differences in behavior and supported features between Windows Phone and Windows Store apps. Some of these are the result of timing of the different product cycles, and they may not appear in future releases. Some differences
are the result of the different natures of phones and computers, their sizes, and the way people use them. We encourage developers to think in terms of Windows app development—developing for a single Windows Runtime, but targeting two different platforms on
    phones and computers.

  • IOS8 needs backwards compatibility mode for pre-IOS8 apps!

Seems some very nice and fully functional apps available on the App store have stopped working in IOS8.
One example is TreeSketch 3.0 which played a big part in my purchasing an iPad Air 2 (as opposed to an Android tablet where this app does not exist)
This app worked nicely earlier this year on an iPad 2 that I borrowed (IOS7?) but no longer works in IOS8 - although still being present in the App store.
Is there any chance of Apple adding "backwards compatibility mode" for such apps ?
Seems to me that Apple's priorities when designing IOS8 do not fully appreciate or understand their own ecosystem of valuable apps.
(An app may be very valuable, even if free)

I have done that and am awaiting replies.
However this policy assumes that the app developer remains active - this is not often the case.
For the TreeSketch app, it was evidently developed by a University and public grant.
The students responsible for development may very well have moved on...
Also - how easy will it be for an App developer when Apple introduces 4000 new API's in IOS8 ?
Will it be obvious for them which API's they used have been depreceated ??

  • My iPad 1 is now very unstable. Apps crash consistently, Mac Numbers/Pages etc incompatible with IOS 5.1 etc. There seems to be no backwards compatibility to iPad 1. Am I just supposed to throw it away? I have restored the iPOad and it has ample storage .

My iPad 1 is very unstable. Many Apps simply crash after opening. There is ample storage available.I have restored the iPad twice now and still it is unstable.
Is this a lack of backwards compatibility because no-one writes apps for IOS 51.1. and the original iPad anymore? not even Apple, as the documents and sheets I create on my Mac are incompatible with my iPad now.
My naievete tells me that this is simply Apple expecting us to upgrade to later levels of hardware. If so, very disappointing for an Apple fan. Seems your App developer approvals (even your own apps) do no require compatibility with anything but IOS 6 or later.

There are various things to make your iPad more stable. You can try deleting all apps from the multitasking bar; do a reset ie hold the power and home buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears; Settings > General > Reset all Settings.
If you had the previous version of iPages (version 09) on your Mac before upgrading to Pages 5.2, your Mac should still have that version in Applications, which is still compatible with your version of Pages on your iPad.
If you don't have that version, you can 'Export to Pages 09' which is still compatible with iOS 5.1.1.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
We can see this feature pack was issued in Nov 2005 from the site, which may not be updated
to add Windows Vista/7 to supported operating systems. However, I can download and install X64 (64-bit)
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Backward Compatibility Components on Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit successfully.
If you get any error while installing, please let me know.

  • Backward compatibility of MS Flash object in Windows 8

I have a case opened with Microsoft from Pfizer, Inc and need a case open with Adobe so that the MS engineers can communicate with Adobe within non-disclosure constraints.
What MS needs from Adobe are debugging information the don't have in order to resolve the issue in their Win8 Flash object (15x).  MS will need to share with Adobe details and data that belong to Pfizer hence need to open that channel for those purposes and for MS to request technical information from Adobe.
My MS case number is 114111712050982 so that you have that information and can share email addresses and phone numbers privately with Flash technical support.
I have picked the best fit I could find for a community

As a general rule, we'd highly recommend that everyone move from fscommand to ExternalInterface.  It's a superior replacement and eliminates some of the weird quirks that fscommand has.  In your situation, changes to IE11 caused backwards compatibility problems with fscommand, but ExternalInterface is unaffected.  We have some work in the pipeline to address the issue on IE11, but it has the potential to break existing content on configs that currently work, so we're trying to be really methodical about providing public pre-releases and soliciting feedback.  In 2014, the only high-traffic content that really uses fscommand are old enterprise applications, so it's hard for us to collect feedback or gauge the impact directly by looking at popular sites.
We just handed a build off with the proposed fscommand changes to Microsoft for inclusion in the next Windows 10 technical preview.  We were soliciting feedback on any related fallout for Windows 7 users on our beta channel (http://www.adobe.com/go/flashplayerbeta); however, there's not a good way to provide a beta build for Windows 8 since Flash Player is a built-in component of IE.  We're working with Microsoft to establish a beta program for Flash Player in IE on Win8+.  If you have access to the Win10 Technical Preview builds, we'd encourage you to test any of your legacy systems that require Flash and give us feedback once the next update is available.
The fact that introducing a proxy solves the problem intermittently is interesting.  I guess it could be some internal timing, or it might be that the proxy is masking a cross-domain policy issue or an SSL negotiation problem.  Have you guys tried with a Debugger version of Flash Player?  You might get some useful feedback, particularly if it's a policy file thing.
    Adobe Flash Player - Downloads
Configure the debugger version of Flash Player
You can turn on policy file logging by adding these to your mm.cfg.  They'll get logged to flashlog.txt:
PolicyFileLog=1 # Enables policy file logging
PolicyFileLogAppend=1 # Optional; do not clear log at startup

  • Compatibility with Windows Mobile 5.0 ?

Does anyone know if Flex apps would work on PocketPCs, ie.
    using Windows Mobile 5.0?
    I haven't purchased one yet, so I can't test.
At this link, Adobe identifies Flash Player 7 for Pocket PC:

This page identifies FlashLite 2.1 which seems to be based on
    Flash Player 7
but includes Action Script 2.0 support:

If so, then Flash is installed fine. Note, though, that Flash

  • SQL Server Express compatibility with Windows 8.1 - Which version(s) are compatible?

We have purchased a new computer that has Win 8.1 Pro. We are migrating an application from a Win 7 Pro machine we are currently successfully using (the vendor migrates it for us) and they have said that the application will require the installation of SQL
Server 2008 Express (which we do have on our Win 7 machine).
In looking at the requirements for SQL Server 2008 Express (on the download page for it), it does not mention it being compatible with Win 8.1
In addition, Installation Instructions  says that it requires:
     Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 SP1
     Windows Installer 4.5.
     Windows PowerShell 1.0
I see that 3.5 is already listed as a program feature of Win8.1 and I've enabled it. Do I need to install SP1? I downloaded it, and launched it, and nothing happened.
I also looked at the Windows Installer 4.5 download page, and it's not clear if that is compatible with 8.1. Do I need to download and install it?
Power Shell 2.0 is already installed. I assume that will be backwards compatible with PowerShell 1.0; is that correct?
I saw another question about SQL Server Express Compatibility with Win 8.1 (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/038ec00e-4fc1-41ba-9fdc-21c022aad67e/action?threadDisplayName=sql-server-express-compatibility-with-windows-81) and the response
said that SQL Server Express 2012 will work, but the link contained in the answer led to a page for SQL Server Express 2014.
My vendor has told me that SQL SERver Express 2012 will be backwards compatible with their product. But they said that I would first have to install 2008 first. Is that correct for Win 8.1?
    So, the ultimate questions are:
    1. What is the link for Sql Server 2012 Express for Win 8.1?
    2. Will the SQL Server 2012 Express download require prior install of the 2008 version
    3. What other component requirements are required for SQL Server 2012 Express, and how can I determine if they have already been installed. (This is a brand new computer with a clean Win8.1 Install).
    4. Finally, can we use the 2014 version of SQL Server Express for Win 8.1? If so, questions 1, 2 and 3 apply, too.
Thanks for your help on this!! HIGH ANXIETY.

    Hello,
The following article provides which updates are required to make SQL Server versions compatible with Windows 8 or 8.1:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2681562/en-us
    1. You can use the product updates feature on SQL Server 2012 to make it compatible with Window 8.1. Apply SP1 as described on the following
    article:
    http://www.sqlcoffee.com/SQLServer2012_0008.htm
    2. No.
    3. Download and install .NET Framework 4.0 and enable .NET Framework 3.5. For more information:

  • Does OSX do "backward compatibility to Acrobat Reader version 6"?

I need to prepare a PDF file from my Pages document, and it required to provide "backward compatibility to Acrobat Reader version 6." Apparently this is something Acrobat Distiller can do but I don't have that app. How can I get Pages to make such a PDF file, or how can I convert the one Pages makes to that format? (I looked at ColorSync Utility but didn't see anything relevant among its PDF filters.)

  • Is it backward compatibility of IME 9

    Please,
I would like if anybody knows Intel Management Engine Drivers 9 are backward compatible with IME 7 and 8.
I have not found Intel communication on this subject.
Did anybody use it with P67A-GD55 Motherboard and Sandy Bridge Processor ?
    Thank you.

    momsola, Bernhard,
As I said before, I gladly admit being wrong.
And in answer of the initial question, yes the IME 9 driver seems to be backward compatible.
I've installed that driver on my P67A-GD65 board in a virtual environment running an evaluation version of Windows Server 2012 and did some initial testing using the last version of ControlCenterII. Although I haven't experienced any problems, I find it still too premature to install it in my real environment. I would also like to see some release notes confirming the backward compatibility or the known problems, but Intel did not include them in the package.
Furthermore, Intel specifically states for which boards the download is intended and that doesn't include any Intel-based boards.
Quote from: brtj on 25-April-13, 05:01:36
I'm still doubtful if the IME drivers are of much use on non-Intel boards.
    I must correct myself.
I came across this article (http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/architecture-guide-intel-active-management-technology) that provides a pretty decent explanation of the function of IME and its position within Intel's AMT architecture (which in turn is part of Intel's vPro technology).
As AMT is a mainly presented as a business solution for centralized management of (remote) workstations, above all, it targets the corporate market. Because  IME is part of AMT the same applies to IME.
(By the way, the IME driver package also includes updates to other AMT components, which are installed when applicable.)
However that doesn't imply that it's completely useless for the private market. MSI's ControlCenterII (whether you like it or not) is a good example and I suspect that other OEMs have comparable solutions.
As you probably already know HECI(x64).SYS is the file name of the IME driver, therefore I would also recommend reading the Wikipedia article on HECI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HECI). It contains a practical example how IME functions/operates.
Quote from: Bernhard on 25-April-13, 00:04:02
The detailed content of the so-called management engine extension remains a grey area, [..]
I hope the aforementioned articles shed some more light.
Quote from: Bernhard on 25-April-13, 00:04:02
[...] but the known details seem to be functions that quite frankly should be handled by the normal BIOS.
After reading these articles (and some more on the subject) I disagree with you.

  • Project Spartan policy on backwards compatability

I originally posted this to another Microsoft forum (but the system won't let me link it, so just google a random sentence below if you want to find it). I guess it can only really be addressed by someone on the Spartan team or up their line of supervisors
and a Microsoft Support Engineer suggested I post here instead. So:
Hi. I'd like to know if Project Spartan's backwards compatability policy will be different from Internet Explorer's.
Microsoft's general policy seems to be to go to great lengths to preserve backwards compatibility. (Raymond Chen's blog The Old New Thing has some great war stories about this.) For example, an IE 3 (Aug 1996) JavaScript quirk was that an array with a trailing
comma was longer than one without. [1].length != [1,].length Changing this behavior to match other browsers and the ECMAScript standard would possibly break JavaScript that had been written to depend on it, so it still exists in in-use versions of IE.
I understand why this policy exists and has been such a valuable business policy for Microsoft for decades. The situation is a bit different with a web browser, though, because the majority of third-party authors have to be compatible with browsers from
multiple vendors rather than a single Microsoft platform like embedded browsers or locked-down corporate intranets (not that those groups are tiny!). The other browsers have a different policy and will break backwards compatibility to better match the specs
(whether explicit or de facto). So the code I write to create websites quickly turns into “this works everywhere, except where you need this IE workaround”. I regularly encounter IE-only behaviors and bugs that I expect never to change, like recently finding
that only IE is case-insensitive when scrolling an HTML5 page to an in-page identifier or anchor from the URL fragid.
I've read a lot about the quality improvements planned for Spartan and I look forward to seeing a lot of these hairy old cross-browser differences get reconciled. But as a longtime developer I know no software is perfect and there will always be bugs. So
my question is: will this be a one-time fix or will there be a new policy towards backwards compatibility? If it's the former, Spartan is the new IE, and I know this tune very well. If the latter, there's a little room for hope that it will be pleasant to
    work with.
Thanks for your consideration, and good luck with your code.

  • Integration services backward compatibility

Hoping someone will know the answer to this.
Is the version of Integration Services on Hyper-V 2012 R2 backwards compatible with Hyper-V 2012?
The reason I ask is that we are in the process of moving VMs across Hyper-V clusters due to a company buyout, and we've found that networking does not work for guests that have been moved over to the new 2012 R2 cluster until IS is upgraded.
If we could install the 2012 R2 version of IS on the guests while they are still on the 2012 host, it would make moving the machines easier.

They make efforts for backward compatibility, as the OS has them built in and you will most likely run into a case of a VM OS being newer than the hypervisor.
It is the forward compatibility that is not always up to par (as you notice).
The Hyper-V Server generates the vmguest.iso dynamically each time it boots from its own binaries.  This ensures that the media on the Hyper-V Server is always at the same patch level of the Hyper-V Server.
This ISO can always be copied off and used on a different Hyper-V Server if you want to upgrade prior to shutdown. (C:\Windows\system32)

  • General Question about JRE - Versions and backward compatibility etc

Could someone maybe help me with this query?
I've got a group of network users who use a total of four java applications which I am told require different versions of the Java Runtime Environment to run.
Is it therefore possible to have muliple versions of the RTE installed on one user machine to make all applications work at once or is it simply a case of having to have only one version of the JRE.
I'm talking mainly about in house applications so I guess if some of them are incompatible with the latest JRE then the answer might be to find out what the problem is and fix the application so it works in the lates jre - or am I missing something?

    Hello,
First of all, it is possible to keep several JRE installed in Windows. For example, my PC has JRE 1.3.1.8, 1.4.0.1, 1.4.2.6.
Second. A tecnology exists to cause a Windowst to run a specific JRE for a specific Java applet. Please see the text below.
    HTML Applet Configuration
The standard (Internet) method of calling Java Runtime when using a Java Applet is to use an Applet tag within the HTML file itself specifying the applet details (example below). This tries to attach itself to Microsoft Java Runtime registry CLSID as detailed above.
    <applet code=Applet1.class width="200" height="200">
Your browser does not support the <code>applet</code> tag.
    </applet>
When the above call is made either, a) the applet will load in the Microsoft Java Runtime, b) the applet will load in a particular Sun Java Runtime as its being redirected or c) the applet wont load at all as Microsoft Java Runtime isnt installed and Sun Java isnt set as default.
The above can be uncontrolled as to what version of Java (if any) is actually used to launch an applet so have an alternative solution is to us the Object tag in place of the Applet tag. Its only suitable for Internet Explorer in an internal, Intranet environment but should be ideal for us.
By replacing the Applet HTML tag with the Object tag when loading an applet you can specify in the tag either to use the latest installed version of Sun Java or a specific version by putting its CLSID in the list. (example below.)
    <OBJECT
    classid="clsid:CAFEEFAC-0014-0002-0006-ABCDEFFEDCBB"
    width="200" height="200">
    <PARAM name="code" value="Applet1.class">
    </OBJECT>
The advantage in the above approach is we can install a specific version of Java, i.e. 1.4.2.06 that doesnt redirect the Microsoft Java Runtime so wont effect other applications, and we can be safe in the knowledge that even if we install a newer version of Java on a machine that has 1.4.2.06 we wont have any backwards compatibility problems.
The Object tag is an Internet Explorer only solution, but could be scaled, as to load a different version of Java you specify a different CLSID, whether thats one of the versions of Sun Java or Microsoft Java or you can specify a CLSID that covers the latest installed version of Sun Java if you dont want to tie the application to a specific version.
Further details on the use of the Applet and Object tags can be found on the Sun website below so they may be of use if the HTML code that calls the Java applet can be easily changed to support our requirements.
