  • Worrying about viruses on Windows 8 through bootcamp.

So im going to be installing Windows 8 on my Macbook Pro (Ill list the specs below) for games, as there just arent enough decent games for OS X. As the topic states, im going to be using Bootcamp. Ive done my research on how to do it, im well informed on the subject, and im confident I will be able to do it easily. Im not one of those idiots that says Macs cant get viruses, as I completely understand the real reason why there are less viruses on Mac than on Windows. What im worried about is a possible virus on the Windows side of the computer, and it affecting the OS X side. Is this possible? Say I accidentally contract a virus that basically turns my computer into a block of metal. Will it only be the Windows part of the computer? Or will the entire computer be screwed? I doubt ill be getting a virus, im very careful. Im just wondering. Because of the price, I will not be able to replace this Mac, so I need to know that I wont ruin it just to play some games.

on osx the virus scanners are really more about trying to create a market then they are
    something one needs to install
Not really. That's simply a common myth, often spread even by high-level members here. We're getting a bit off the topic of malware on Windows in Boot Camp, though, so for those who are also concerned with protecting their Macs from malware, see my Mac Malware Guide.

  • Forms and Reports - Backward Compatibility

Is it possible to load a .fmb file created using Developer/2000
Form Builder for Windows 95 (V5.0) and then convert it so that

  • Considering Purchase - Worried about reviews concerning water damage

So I am considering a purchase of a Touch and was looking at the reviews on Amazon. There are quite a few bad reviews regarding water damage to the touch and Apple not honoring warranty coverage if there is absolutely any sign of water damage. Apparently this water damage is even caused by simple condensation that can occur from going inside from the outside cold. I live in Chicago so this would obviously be a concern of mine during the winter.
It would seem that if this is true - then I wouldnt want to risk that and having a $300-$400 dollar paper weight after awhile. Many reviewers said this happened to them within weeks/couple of months of purchase.
Has anyone here heard of this issue or experience it themselves? I really dont want to purchase one if this is true. I went back about 15 pages of this forum and so far have found no mention of this water damage issue. Although I do recall about a month ago seeing a news report about Apple lowering their cost of repair/replacemnt of a water damaged Iphone to about $180 or something like that.
Anyway, any help/info on this issue will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!!

You should be aware that some of those anonymous product reviews are posted by the competition, posing as regular customers. I'm not saying this happens in particular with the iPod touch; it happens to a certain extent with all popular products.
Also, you have to consider it statistically (even if you believe the reviews are generally true). Apple sells millions of iPod touches (37 million combined iPhone and iPod touch unit sales as of last quarter). Most people will not bother with posting a review, whether it is positive or negative. But they are more likely to post a review, or post a comment here, if there is a problem. So most people are not going to post anything just to say "everything is just great with my iPod touch and I am happy." So how many iPod touch users are out there, in Chicago and elsewhere, who are perfectly happy with their iPod touch for every customer that runs into a problem? I don't know; no one knows. But if you happen to see a few hundred bad customer product reviews, that is a tiny miniscule fraction of total number of iPod touch customers out there, most of whom are probably satisfied and did not bother to take the time to post anything anywhere.

  • Getting worried about recent Macbook core 2 duo purchase

I'm looking online, and it seems like there's a TON of defects to be found in the new 13 inch macbooks. I just bought a new Core 2 Duo Macbook in Black a few days ago, and I'm beginning to get worried about my purchase. Have they fixed the majority of the defects with the release of the core 2 duo versions? Or do you think it would be wiser to return it and wait till they release the next macbook? I haven't had any issues with mine yet...but considering the amount of bad press the new macbooks have been getting, i'm begining to think it might be wise to return it while i still can. Any thoughts?

Well ask yourself this question: Do you have any of these problems with your MB?. As has been pointed out, this is a forum for those who do have problems. It is unwise to use the forums to "hunt" for things to worry about. Here is the thing: certain computers may be prone to certain issues, of that there is no doubt. But, that does not mean that every one of those computers has that particular problem. It just means that the few that do have problems are more likely to experience that particular problem. If you look at the total number of complaints about a particular "issue" and compare that to the number of machines sold, you will see that it is a very small percentage. I just bought my daughter a new MB to replace her aging G3 iBook and I have to say that the overall build quality is vastly better. The "feel" is much more solid, keyboard is much nicer, screen blows away the "old" iBook and, needless to say, it's waaaaay faster. So the bottom line is: If your computer is working as it should, why can't you not simply enjoy it and stop worrying about problems you don't have.
PS No insult intended but I would guess that at least 90% of the problems posted on this forum are the result of user error, conflicts with 3rd party hardware, software or drivers or a simple lack of knowledge about either the hardware or the OS.

  • Worried about online gaming and security!

Currently playing Quake 4 on my iMac. All of a sudden my cd-key doesn't work with a message "your cd-key is in use", waited a few minutes, restarted and it worked fine.
I'm worried that someone got access to it. Should I be worried about other files, systems, etc... on my iMac. Anyone know of any concerns?
Sorry, don't know if this the right place.

Highly, highly unlikely your system was compromised. Gaining remote entry to your filesystem would've required some kind of trojan backdoor or exploit. And considering that there are very few in existence for the mac, and practically none in the wild, the chance that there would be one stealing Quake 4 keys is about zero.
That message could've been the result of a network error, or a previous login session of yours that hadn't been terminated on their end yet. Also, pirated copies of games often use randomly generated keys, so it is possible that a copy of yours came up. Either way, if it doesn't keep happening, I wouldn't worry about it.

  • Worried About My Mini

    "After reading this:
Memory available to Mac OS X may vary depending on graphics needs. Minimum graphics memory usage is 80MB, resulting in 432MB of system memory available."
I'm getting worried about my upcomming mini. I'm planning to purchase a mac mini intel core solo as soon as i get my income tax check (Anytime now). Unfortunately, my budjet only allows me to stick with stock settings (At least for now, going to a gig as soon as posible-need to buy a printer/keyboard/mous/monitor 1st leaving me with no extra $$ for ram). I'm worried though, because it says "Minimum graphics memory usage is 80MB,".
Does this mean it can exeed 80MB if playing some games or doing video intensive tasks leaving me with like 400 MB or less ram to run the program?
All i want to do with my mini is listen to itunes while doing schoolwork, watching videos and some light gaming (WC 3- Maybe World of Warcraft (on low settings as long as it's playable i'm happy). Will i be able to these things with the 512 MB of ram?
I know i'm going to be bombarded with people saying upgrade to a gig but i can't right now, i know it's a huge improvement and plan to do it as soon as possible but for now will 512 be enough for school work and light gamming?
    Thanks so much in advance,
PS: Anyone with a stock solo play World Of Warcraft? Is the game playable at all? (10+ Framerate Average Is good to me. I'm not picky about great performance. But, i find anything below 8-10 in non crowded areas with low tuned settings is even too sluggish for me)
    Wannabe

    Hi Macminiwannabe
The "shared" graphics system in the intel mac mini is currently the only real hardware based drawback in terms of getting the most out of the system. People have been experiencing errors where by the drop shadows around window borders break up and distort, due to the fact that there is not enough available ram for the graphics sub system when the system is processing multiple tasks simultaneously. I don't quite understand why Apple have decided / agreed to embed Intels shoddy graphics tea party into the new mac minis, especially when you consider the stellar performance that OS X squeezed out of the ATI 9200 in the G4 systems.
When it comes down to doing what you want to do, you will surely be amazed, even with 512MB of Ram on hand. You would certainly benefit from a little extra juice to play with, however 512 (factory standard) is perfectly (maybe even more than) adequate to process music, photos, internet, email and "soft" gaming without kicking up a fuss.
    No need to worry!
Hope that I may have been of help

Within reason, Pages v5.2 documents are forwards compatible with Pages v5.5.3. Apple introduced the single file format document as a default with Pages v5.5.3 which is not backwards compatible with Pages v5 on Mavericks.
However, they also provided a File > Advanced > Change File Type > {Single File, Package} menu that allows you to change the current Pages v5.5.3 document into the backwards compatible Package type document. You would follow this transformation with a File > Save operation to complete it.

I am selling my old Photoshop 5 software CD and book. Do I worry about licensing

You can't use CS2 on a new Mac I'm afraid. CS2 will only work on old Macs with a PowerPC processor. Current Macs have an Intel processor so CS2 can't run at all. You will have to buy CS6, the current version, or subscribe to the Creative Cloud if you want Photoshop.

  • With my iPhone 5s, can I record long voice memo to the cloud and not worry about storage on phone?

With my iPhone 5s, can I record a long voice memo to the cloud and not worry about storage space on phone?

You can't add music to the cloud, whether it will show there for streaming and redownloading depends upon what country that you are in. If you are in a country where music is available in the cloud then you don't have to download the music from the store, if you turn Settings > iTunes & App Store > Music (under the 'show all' heading) 'on' then you should be able to stream purchased music in the Music app without downloading it - your phone will need to be online in order to stream, and if using 3G/4G then it will use some of your data allowance.
If you download an album or a track then it will be downloaded onto your phone. You can't upload music to the cloud from an iOS device. Whether music that you've bought shows for streaming depends upon what country that you are in and if the album or track remains in the store (unless you've subscribed to iTunes Match), and if you are connected to a network.

  • Do I need to worry about this?

It has been an interesting few months with my one year old 13" MBP. Lots of spinning beach balls followed by a hard drive crash. Apple was quick to replace the hard drive. And as I had everything backed up on Time Machine I was able to quickly restore everything.
All was good for a few months until the beachballs, freezes, and finder crahes began again. Made another trip to the Genius bar where they thought I might have re-downloaded a corrupt file from Time Machine. They cleaned my temp files and caches and things seemed to work well in the store.
When I returned home I had the same issues. They had prepared me for this. So a system restore, a re mount and re start of time capsule and everything seems to be working well. Speedy, no crashes, no freezes.
The issue is that I wanted to double check so I ran disk verify and permission verify on the disk utility. To my surprise it came back with a LONG error log as below. So long, I could not get it all into this post. But it seems like a recurrent message. Do I need to worry about any of this? What should I do next, if anything? Thanks in advance for your response.

You definitely need to repair your disk. If you can, boot from something else, such an external disk or the system discs that came with your Mac. You can also cause the disk to be repaired by booting into "Safe Mode": http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564 . If that process can't repair your disk, you may need one of the more-powerful disk utilities such as Disk Warrior.

    John,
I'd pay good money to bet it wouldn't last 5 years... I don't rate the in built power supply and as for "server grade hard disk" - Hmmmm..... The failure rate of all HD's on the market after 3 year is 60%.

I'm worried about what will happen if I delete my recent backup data from the phone I still own? Will I lose any progress in games that was saved in the backup?
I have an iPhone 4S and I keep getting those irritating notifications that tell me I need to upgrade my storage or free up space. I've deleted all I can from my music and photos without losing too many precious memories, but it's come to the point where I think I need to delete backups. However, I'm just worried that I will lose all and any log-in information that I don't remember and app/game progress that was saved to the iCloud. Please Tell me what will happen/what I can do?

If you are asking what happens when you delete an iCloud backup, it only deletes the backup from your account.  It won't do anything to the data on your phone or in your iCloud account.  If you don't need to backup you can delete it.  (If you no longer want to back up your phone to iCloud, turn iCloud backup off in Settings>iCloud>Backup.  Then your phone will back up to your computer each time you sync it with iTunes.)
