Backwards Navigation When Reviewing Quiz Questions

I have discovered from some students that they can cheat on my quiz. They take the quiz, review their answers and make note of the correct answers, then either drag the navigation slider backwards or click the Back button to return to the beginning of the quiz. This resets their original answers and allows them to retake the quiz with the answers they took from their notes.
The quiz is set up to allow multiple attempts, but I assume they should be starting over with each attempt. My quiz questions are randomized from a test pool, so hopefully they do not see the same questions again and not in the same order. However, by cheating in this way, they can take the same questions in the same order.
Is there anyway to limit backwards movement when reviewing the quiz?
I have turned off backwards movement while they are taking the quiz, but this setting is turned off when they start reviewing the quiz.
I am using Captivate 5.

Thanks for the information. Yes I have set the quiz up to allow users to review their answers. Yes I assume they will take notes on the answers, but I have not enabled the Retake Quiz button. Once they get to the results page and choose to review their answers, I assumed (incorrectly) that their answers would be locked and they would not be able to change the answers or results for their attempt.
My instructions tell them to relaunch the training, go through it again, and then take the quiz again. With the questions and answers being randomized, I was hoping that their notes (question 1 answer is B - question 2 answer is C - etc.) would not be very helpful to them and they would put effort into taking notes from the training to help them on the test instead.
You said the following:
"If a user clicks the Review Quiz button after any attempt, they will be unable to perform a new attempt on that quiz until they relaunch the lesson again.  Also, if the user jumps outside the Quiz Scope by navigating back to any slide before the first scored object or quiz question, they will be unable to reattempt the quiz until relaunch."
I have tested this out, launching the training from the LMS, and it is not correct. I can go through the quiz, review my results, drag the slider or click the back button to the beginning of the quiz, and take the quiz again.
I have disabled backwards movement during the quiz, but once you start reviewing a quiz, backwards movement is once again enabled via the slider or back button.
I can hide the playbar and navigation controls, but when you get to the review, the navigation controls remain hidden and you cannot advance through the questions to see the results. I thought of adding a separate Forward button on the quiz question slides to allow the user to go forward as they review the slides, but you cannot add buttons or clickboxes to question slides.
I could certainly turn off the review functionality, but I think it is valuable information to the student. I need to allow them to retake the quiz, as my boss has set a very high bar (100% passing score) on the quiz.
Does anyone have any other ideas?
By the way, after typing up this response, I started doing some playing around, and I figured out a fix. I turn off the navigation controls before the quiz and enable the Skip button on each question slide. With the navigation off, the user can answer the questions and click Submit. Then when reviewing the answers, they can navigate forward by clicking Skip. They can no longer navigate backwards through the quiz and training material.

  • Navigation when reviewing a quiz

    Hello,
I have created a quiz in Captivate 3, and enabled the review
functionality in Captivate. Upon completing the quiz, on the score
page is the the option to review the quiz. Upon pressing this, it
goes to the first question properly and displays everything
properly. My issue is not being able to go on to the next question.
The only button I am using in this quiz is the submit button. This
button does appear on the review screen, but is not active. I don't
see any means of editing only the review screens, like adding
buttons to just these slides. I have a feeling its right infront of
me, but after a couple hours of hunting and reading, I figured I'd
    throw the question out there.

    Hi,
In order to move forward in the review screens, you must have
'show skip button' selected in the quiz slide options, which will
display a skip button on each question slide.
And in the Quiz settings, select 'Allow user to review quiz'.
You cannot have a button, just on the review screens, as they
are, in effect, one of the same, with the review view simply
showing the correct answer / incorrect selection.

  • How to reveal correct answer in a quiz question

    Hello,
    I am using Captivate 5.5.
Is there a way to allow the user to view the correct answer to a quiz question without having to keep clicking on the different options until they select the right one? I want to allow infinite attempts but equally, if they are in a hurry or just run out of patience, I want the user to see what the actual answer is straight away. Our learners are medics and they often have limited time.
So the sequence could be something like this.
    1. User enters question page.
    2. Selects one answer. It is incorrect and retry message appears.
    3. User selects another answer. It is incorrect and retry message appears
    4. User decides that he/she wants to see the correct answer before moving on. Selects 'reveal answer' and is able to see what the correct answer is.
    5. User moves onto next slide (this could be another quiz question or any other type of slide
In another package I have been using, we can specify a 'reveal correct answer' button which shows the correct answer straight away. Is there something like that in Captivate?
    Thanks....

I think what you mean is that the quiz question's Failure action doesn't trigger until the final attempt and that would never happen if attempts is set to Infinite.  So if you were only incrementing the variable when the quiz question registered final failure then you'd only get one crack at incrementing the variable. yes.  My bad.
However, if you are using Multiple Choice questions, you can also trigger actions using the Advanced Answer Option.  This will trigger an action when a particular answer is selected.  So if you set this for each incorrect answer, you could increment the variable each time they select the wrong answer.
You can also use this same Advanced Answer action to execute a conditional action that first checks the value of the variable and then shows the rollover caption or increments the variable as needed.
Say you create a variable called WrongAnswer and initialise it with a value of 0.  Then you create a Conditional Action called CheckWrongAnswer that looks like this:
If WrongAnswer is equal to 1 assign Wrong Answer with 2, (then on the next line) Show RolloverCaption, ELSE assign Wrong Answer with 1.
This shows the rollover caption after the second attempt resulting in an incorrect answer.

  • "Review quiz" option grayed out

I'm using Captivate 3. I'd like to opt out of reviewing quiz
questions, since I provide immediate feedback in the
correct/incorrect response text boxes. But, the "Allow user to
review quiz" checkbox is grayed out in my quiz preferences. Any
suggestions for how to get it back again? Thanks!

    Welcome to our community, kgordon321
Have you tried ensuring the option "Show score at end of
quiz" is enabled? I believe that option causes the "Allow user to
    review quiz" to enable/disable.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Quiz questions will not retain format when question is changed.

OK forum folks. I'm working on my first e-learning project and have ran into a problem with question formating. The instructions/help basically tell you to click here and click there. I can easily figure that out. The questions I seem to have are quite a bit deeper.
I have a predefined template which is company approved. I have created master slides in the question pool for both a 4 item match and a 5 item match (I have found if I add a line to the 4 matching line quiz the line spacing and formatting changes). The placeholder questions are essentially non-questions.
I duplicate the master slide in the question pool to maintain the original format (spacing, location, etc.).
I change the placeholder questions on the duplicated slide to the real question (slide is still in the slide pool)
The formatting (font, spacing, locations, etc.) change on the new (edited) questions and require reformatting.I have also tried copying the master question slide to the filmstrip and editing the copied slide questions in the filmstrip. I receive the same results.
Is there are way I can create masters in the current format so I can use the approved templates, edit the questions and not have to reformat the slide after the questions have been changed?
Also, is there a way to lock the formatting of the questions? If I want to add/delete a new question or line to the slide, it would be great to be able to not have to reformat the slide for the change.
I look forward to your answers.
    Thank you.

I am trying to deal with the same issue. The master slides are more about background elements and navigation buttons, but they do not seem to allow for the addition of quiz elements.
I have come up with a workaround that I hope will work. What I am doing is creating a new project that becomes my quiz question layout library (Let's call this Project 2). In this project I add the various types of questions I will be using in my project (multiple choice with three choices, multiple choice with five, true/false, etc...). I get all the quiz elements in place for each type of question (the header, question, submit/clear buttons, review area, etc...).
These slides serve as my Master slides for my actual project (Project 1). I can copy and paste the appropriate layout from Project 2 to Project 1 and then change the questions themselves.
I am sure I will find out the downside of this soon enough...
There is no doubt the creation of masters for quiz questions needs work, actually it needs just to exist!

  • Review Quiz - Matching Question

Hi fellow Captivate-rs! I'm urgently hoping for some help...
I've got a four-question "Knowledge Check" (quiz), complete with a "Results" slide, at the end of my project. When clicking the "Review Quiz" button, the correct answers display for the user to compare against theirs as well (as should occurr, of course). The only exception is with "Matching" questions. When reviewing them, I see yellow boxes where the correct answer could/should be viewed. However, the correct answer(s) do not appear. Does anyone know of a solution? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Captivate doesn't allow much flexibility in these pre-programmed quiz question slides.
If you're not trying to output to HTML5 you could rebuild the question as a drag and drop interaction using the Infosemantics Drag and Drop Lite Question Widget.
    http://www.infosemantics.com.au/adobe-captivate-widgets/drag-and-drop/question
This widget has a special trick for showing the correct answer when in Review Mode.  Your learner can mouse over an object you specify in the widget settings that will then cause the drag objects on screen to animate and move to their correct positions.  See the instructions on this page under Show Correct Answer:

  • When you review quiz, can the answers be personalized?

I have created a quiz containing 14 multiple choice quiz:
I would like to personalize answers (i.e tell them why it is the right answer) to each question when the review the quiz, rather than show them what is right.
I would also like the continue and review quiz button to appear only after they score a certain %
Can these two things be done?
    Kind Regards
    Simi Ninan

In Captivate 7 and later versions there is a system variable you can use to detect when the user is in Quiz Review mode.  You can use this variable to govern Conditional Advanced Actions on quiz slides that will Show or Hide captions that give learners the information you want, only during Quiz Review.
You can hide the Quiz Review button underneath the Retake Quiz button on the Quiz Results slide.  The Retake Quiz button disappears as soon as the user has scored a passing score.  You cannot hide the Continue button, but you can make disabled unless the user scores a passing score by setting the Quiz > Settings > Required drop down option accordingly.

  • Review quiz navigation

My Review Quiz button on the Results page of the quiz is taking me back to the beginning of the module instead of the beginning of the quiz. What can I do to fix that? I do not have any advanced action in the module and I do not see any navigation options in the Review Quiz button. I am using Captivate 6 on Windows 7.
I have noticed that the Review Quiz button works properly when I preview from the beginning of the quiz. However, it does not work properly when I preview the Project or preview in Web Browser.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Darin

    Rod,
I checked the Advanced Interactions, but did not find any interactive object on slide 10 where I’m being thrown back to.
It did seem kind of weird that the Results page does not show any interactive objects when there is a Continue button and Retake button on the slide.
Checked Actions under Quiz Pass or Fail. Not seeing anything unusual.
I did notice that I am taken back to the early part of the module with either the Review Quiz button or the Retake Quiz button. (I just tried the Retake button in the example above) Wondering if my Results slide might be corrupted.

  • Review Quiz button does not navigate to the first quiz question..

    Hi,
so I have created an interactive software simulation guide for users of my organisation. At the end of this guide there is a quiz (multiple choice, true or false questions) with 15 slides. At the end of the quiz the results screen is displayed with the "Review Quiz" button. Clicking this navigates the user to slide 72/245 rather than the beginning of the quiz, the first question.
    How can this be fixed?!
    Many thanks,
    Achello

You have an interactive object somewhere on that slide that is scored to be added to the quiz.
Open the Advanced Interaction dialog (F9) and look for the object there.  Remove the score.

  • Can I control when the Review Quiz button appears?

The project I'm working on uses the e-mail results function to send scores to a database.  After sending scores, the user needs to be able to review their answers.    The problem is I don't see a way to make the Review button's appearance dependent on another action (user clicking send e-mail).   If both buttons appear together, a user could review their answers, reload/take the lesson again to improve their score, and then send the report only if they did well.
So the question is:  Is there a way to control the Review Quiz button?
I do have a workaround:  Make the Review button transparent and put an image of the button on the slide to appear 20 or 30 seconds into the slide, hopefully the user will have reported their answer before the review button appears.  But this is a trick and a savvy user might notice it. (Particularly since there are several lessons that they'll take.)
    Thanks for your help!
    Jenny N

    OK, limitation to the workaround.
It doesn't seem to matter where I put the "pause after" control on the slide, the slide pauses about half-way through the slide length.  So I have to make the slide length 2x the time I want before the pause (So for a 20 second pause, I had to set the slide length to 40 seconds).
Hope this helps if anyone else tries something like this,
    Jenny N

  • Branching Quiz:  Review Quiz shows ALL questions and MaxScore includes too many scores

I'm using Captivate 6 (trial version) and I am testing out the branching capability following this tutorial ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-_Ja8vlZQw). The branching is working, but if I get to the end of my quiz and then select 'Review Quiz', it shows ALL the slides, including the ones that should NOT show up because the user selected options that didn't trigger them.
Also, it looks like the Maximum Score on the results slide includes the scores the user could get on slides they never see because of the branching :(.

It has been a while since I tested this, but it did work for me. I suppose you are using version 6.0.1.240? Because I had some issues before the patch. I will check again if you confirm the version. And you are sure to have checked Branch aware in Quiz Preferences?

  • Review quiz - move to next slide

I have a quiz which seems to work fine until it comes to reviewing it.  When i click 'review' it takes me to the first question which shows whether it was answered correctly/incorrectly but there doesnt seem to be anyway to move onto the next question.  No buttons appear at the bottom so you are just stuck on Q1.
    Any ideas what's happened?
    (captivate 6)

    Hi Lilybiri,
I ran into the same navigation-during-Review problem, so I will try your solution.
I have 3 multiple choice questions.
I want to hide the Next button under the Clear button (although having a clear button is a little strange for multiple choice question because you can simply click on a different radio button, right?)
I added both buttons to all 3 multiple choice questions.
The first multiple choice question slide was easy - the Clear button slid right over the Next button.
However, on the 2nd and 3rd multiple choice slides, the Clear button slide under the Next button for some strange reason. As the buttons don't appear in the timeline, I cannot change their layer order. Right clicking doesn't help as there is no option to 'send backward.'
The Clear vs. Next stack positioning does not appear in your blog entry:
"All objects on the questions slides have top priority, and this is the sequence of the stack:
    top most is Back button
Clear button just under the Back
    Skip under Clear
Submit is the bottom object "
Any ideas how I can get the Clear button to appear over top of the Next button?
    thanks!

  • Last quiz question just freezes

A colleague of mine made a Captivate movie with three quiz
questions. They are designed so that the user is allowed one
attempt at each question, and if the user gets the question wrong,
they are taken to the slide previous to the question slide so that
they can review. The problem occurs on the third question. When the
user gets it wrong, it does go back to the previous slide, but then
when the user clicks the Next button to go back to the question
slide, the question cannot be resubmitted. I've adjusted the number
of attempts, the scoring, the backward movement, the pass/fail,
etc., and I have no idea why that one question slide is being such
    a pain.
I realize it has something to do with it being the last
slide, because when I move it up to an earlier slide, it doesn't
have the same problem, but the colleague wants the slides in this
    order.

    Hi Lira,
Okay... gotcha. Usually when you have a quiz in a captivate
movie - you cannot retake a quiz just by navigating back to it. In
order to retake it - the movie would need to be reopened. I just
created a quick sample to try it out myself - and was able to
retake the quiz on the 2nd slide (I think because it is relaunching
the movie by going back to the first slide.) When I get to the 4th
slide - and get the quiz wrong - I go back to the 3rd slide - then
when I get to the 4th slide again, I cannot retake the quiz. I am
able to still navigate forward, because I set the option 'allow
user to review quiz' in the Quiz Manager. This will display the
'Next' button when I go back to a quiz question. You can then
remove the 'Review Area' that displays, if you don't want them to
have review information. I can explain this further if you need me
to. I can't think of a solution to be able to have them retake the
quiz - without relaunching the movie. I'm stumped. If I think of
    something - I'll post.

  • Next button in Review Quiz not working in HTML5.

    Hey folks,
We've created a course in CP7 and when I take the course on a Computer (SWF) everthing works fine, but when I take the course on an iPad (HTML5), and go into the Review Quiz section, the Next button is not working. When I click it you can see the click animation of the button being pressed, but it doesn't progress to the next question. I'm forced to close the window as there is no other navigational options, but when I do that and re-open the course, it takes me back to the beginning of the course like I haven't even attempted the course.
I've searched for a previous instance of this and I couldn't find anything, so I was hoping someone has either run into this issue before or might have a suggestion on how to resolve it. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hello,
    Welcome to Adobe Forums.
Need more information about this issue :
    1) Does it happen on a specific project or with a sample project as well (2 or 3 question slides) ?
    2) Which iPAD are you using and what is the iOS version ?
Make sure you have CP 7.0.1 update installed (Launch CP7 -> Click on Help -> About Captivate)

  • Issue with First Quiz Question

When I try to go back BEFORE answering the first quiz
question, when I move forward again to the first question, it tells
me that "You did not answer the question completely"and it will not
allow me to answer this question or any additional questions. (I
have set the option to use the BACK button in a quiz.) If I answer
the FIRST question, it allows me to go backwards on any additional
questions. Why can't I move backwards before I answer the first
question? Is there something I am missing?

As Mzedella said, my understanding is that backing out of the
quiz (going backwards past the first question) costs the user an
attempt, so if you've only allowed one attempt, the questions are
    considered not answered....
We have a mix of content and questions (not a single block of
quiz questions), and wanted to allow backward movement. We solved
this problem by making the first slide a question. That way, the
user is always in the quiz and they can move backward as much as
    they like.
If you can't think of a good question for the first slide
(often a question about their background knowledge is good), you
can always make it 'are you ready to begin?'. A little clumsy, but
you get the functionality you want.
We further required all questions to be answered, so users
can't skip ahead past unanswered questions. By removing the nav
bar, but including a menu (via skin), users can easily review the
material, but are still required to at least click through all the
slides. This works for our application, but you many want something
    different.
