Bad new Powerbook!

Yesterday I bought the new 15" Hires Powerbook.
The Powerbook is brand-new, but the quality is really bad!
1. Lines on the display
2. Superdrive not reading DVDs
3. Screen-Freeze after sleep mode
4. Short battery running time (<3 hours)
5. Harddisk or DVD clicks every few seconds
Now I can give the Powerbook back and wait weeks for a new one

Welcome to Apple Discussions, Stereotype.
To be honest, as your PowerBook is only one day old, I would only settle for a complete replacement.
I once came across a woman, at an Apple Store, who had a three day old iBook that had battery charging problems and managed to help her to get an immediate replacement - even though the staff tried to insist upon a repair instead.
I think you've been comparatively unlucky to have received a malfunctioning PB. Generally, whilst not perfect, Apple has a pretty good reputation for reliability. It's notebook computers have a repair rate of around 15%, which is amongst the very best in the industry.
You should also be aware that you are bound to read of many problems on Apple Discussions. Why? It's a technical support site - where people come to discuss problems with their Apple products. People do not come here to constantly say how well their equipment is behaving.

  • My experience with Tiger/new Powerbook 15", 1.67 ghz

Apple proclaims "Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger. The world’s most advanced operating system."
Well, that hasn't been the case in my experience.
I bought a new 15 Powerbook HR, 1.67 ghz, 1.5 gb ram, 80gb hd on 11/4/05 (from MacMall). At this point I have about 20gb free.
Problems I have noticed with it/OSX.(Most have been fixed by an archive and install done a few weeks ago.) Here's my trial by fire.
    In chronological order
    - trackpad lags
    - many icons not correct after using Migration Assistant.
    - some icons open up the wrong applications
    - window resize button on Finder, and some app windows, doesn't open window to full screen. Also doesn't open window so that scroll bars disappear.
    - dragging a file up or down a window in list view doesn't always make the window scroll up or down when I go up or down to the top or bottom edges. When they do move, it races. Smooth scrolling has no effect.
    - CDr recorded on a machine with OSX 10.3.9 shows up as a recordable CD!
    - screen dims when I disconnect power supply
-Network option from the Go menu does nothing.
    - Doing a Get Info on a html file has Internet Explorer as the app to open when the files have Mozilla icons
    - icon for some apps have wrong application logo on them
    - screen dims and brightens rapidly, disconcertingly in low light. I turn off the ambient light adjustment on the monitors control panel. This is poorly implemented. Having the keys light up is nice though.
    - can't reset F7 key to take pictures of screen. (I eventually am able to do it.)
    - the clicker gives me a sharp pain in my arm from the second day of use. This has gotten better now but I was worried I might be getting carpal tunnel/repetitive stress injury. (This happened when I got my new Powerbook Firewire too, eventually going away.) The clickers are too stiff when new.
    - I call Applecare. They don't have my registration information I gave them when I signed up on the web. We reset the Power Manger.
    - Quicktime movies have no sound. I later throw out the LAME stuff (Component and Framework) and get sound back.
    - I go to Genius at Apple Store. They tell me I am using a non-native resolution, that is why I am having screen dimming. (Wrong. It was the ambient light control.) They also say whatever software I have installed is likely to be causing most of the other problems.
    - I get Finder freeze #1
    - Preview does not animate gifs. It did with 10.3.9.
-System sounds do not work. Upon reboot they do. Flakey.
    - some finder windows are not opening up with the item count in list view.
    -desktop gets rearranged
-occasionally keyboard turns letters into numbers as if number lock is on. It isn't. The it will stop working altogether. Rebooting cures this. (Happens twice before I call AppleCare.)
    - call AppleCare. They have my old address when I bought the Powerbook! I get registered again.I cannot install GarageBand, which I threw out thinking I didn't need it, because the install DVDs that came with my machine have an error reading the software only package. They will send me a new install disk #1.
    - scrolling is not smooth, races.
    - I notice the memory door has 3 out of the 4 screws loose. I tighten them. The battery door feels a little loose too but that is unfixable.
    - keyboard doesn't respond #3
    - I call AppleCare. They have the wrong address still in their database!
-eject DVD does not work. (It works all other times.)
    - system freeze #2
    - kernal panic #1
    - Call AppleCare. My TechTool Deluxe CD will not boot. I ask for a replacement. (I can't believe they are still using TechTool Deluxe. I remember what a hassle it was trying to get a working disc with my Powerbook Firewire.
    - keyboard types wrong characters #4
-Print preview does not work. (it does all other times.)
-Preference for video capture program (BTV) is not remembered
    - audio is only heard when BTV is running (since fixed.)
    - system freeze #3
    - keyboard stops working #5
    - I call Apple Care. We zap P-ram 3X.
    - file sizes incorrect in list view. Have to open window a second time to get correct info.
    - install DVD #1 arrives. It is defective.
    - system freeze #4
    - I update to 10.4.4. I hope this will cure the problems. Nope.
    - Help doesn't work.
    - Battery firmware update process works but isn't smooth. It crashes "unexpectedly" as I check to make sure it is really done. (It kept telling me I needed to do it.)
    - Help works.
    - boot takes forever after 10.4.4 update.
    - battery firmware update wants to run again.
    - file size is wrong in finder list view windows.
    - keyboard stops working #6
    - fan stops yet processor is still VERY busy as I am calibrating battery. Charge is about 5%.
    - I quit IMovie, It then says it quit "unexpectedly". (This happens with other apps still.)
    - I have to use power key to wake it from sleep, as I calibrate battery.
    - keyboard problem #7
    - system freeze # 5
    - text editing in iDVD is very buggy. Cursor is impossible to see against background with many themes. There is no way to increase cursor size.
    - AppleCare says they have sent TechTool Deluxe CD. I haven't gotten it yet.
    - I receive install disk #1. 2 actually. I install software bundle only. It works! I also reinstall CPU help files. Help still doesn't work.
    - I archive and install. (It installs 10.4.2 so I update to 10.4.4), Help doesn't work.
    - Help works without my having done anything. OK.
    - I repair a gazillion permissions. (funny how when you install the system software the permissions then need to be repaired. You would think the system would know to set the permissions correctly upon installation.
    - I notice the order of the right hand menu items has changed (clock, keyboard setup, OS 9 icon...)
    - file sizes wrong in list view
    - BTV has audio loop at times. (See thread on Topic "New Powerbook Audio Stutter / Looping / Echo problem in Using your PowerBook G4 15-inch Aluminum forum.)
    - keyboard problem #8
    - keyboard problem #9
    - I call AppleCare. TechTool Deluxe CD has still not arrived. We discuss other problems. I get hung up on.
    -keyboard problem #10
    - I go to Apple Store. Talk to the genius. He tells me the system software is "a house of cards", adding other software can cause unpredictable results. He zaps P-ram 3x, does something in open firmware. Recommends a clean install. I think about it and later decide not to.
    - I lose system sounds after I install USBVison video capture driver for Tiger. I eventually get it back.
    - I repair LOTS of permissions.
    - The fan starts to make bad noise.
    - system freeze $6
    - I do a Get Info on a file I making with BTV. The OS tells me it is 11GB. I stop the recording and then I check again. It says it is 1.5 gb.
-iChat won't open. It starts, according to Activity Monitor, runs for about two seconds and then disappears.
    - Network, under the Go menu, does nothing.
    - I call AppleCare.
    - I notice cursor disappears in Firefox.
    - Yahoo IM icon keeps getting moved. All the icons it is next to are spaced about the same but this one keeps getting moved.
    - I Stuff some stuff. The fan keeps running, it is still hot after I am finished. I have to reboot to get things back to normal.
    - Some icons for PING files on my desktop have changed from having Preview icons to Quicktime icons. I use Get Info to change them back from Picture Viewer (OS 9!)
    - the fan comes on with only my normal apps running (Eudora, Firefox, Yahoo IM)
Ok, that is about all up 'til now. I still haven't gotten my TechTool Deluxe CD but need to give that a few more days. I now have 8 install DVDs. (Another install #1 came yesterday, making a total of 6 #1, and 2 #2s) The address on the invoices are finally correct, most had the wrong town but the right zip code which I had corrected many times.
The problems that are still recurring are the keyboard problem, applications still sometimes crash "unexpectedly" even though I am quitting them, the file sizes are not right the first time around in finder list view windows. Most everything else was cured by the archive and install. Little weirdnesses still crop up though. I am not sure if the echo problem has been fixed. (Mac OS) Help is still slow to appear.
Thanks for bearing with me. I do hope things get smoother in the future. I have been using Macs for about 10 years now, starting with a used SE and 7.something, going to a refurbished LC 580 and 7.5.5, a new Powerbook Firewire and 9.2.2. I have also used 10.3.9 which seemed to be a lot more stable than 10.4.
    Cheers,
    John L

If it was me I would backup to DVD/ External HD if you have and erase / reinstall OSX.
Update all and once you are finished without the user folder / any of your files on torture the Pbook to see if this happens again.
This likely will be able to give you an idea about hardware or software problems.
If all is well , likely not then copy "COPY" over from the backup you "ONLY COPY" documents, music, Photo's, desktop stuff and also place programs back in Applications folder.
The reason for the above is that in the /user/"you"/library folder it stores the settings for Icon's, prefferences to programs and some other useless stuff + E-mails for either Mac Mail and or Microrubish Entorture "entourage" depending on what you have or used also Itunes prefs.
Once this is copied leave the "/user/you/library" stuff alone and see how it runs.
App's/programs will ask to have it's preferences set again as if /when you have installed it for the first time.
Likely most of the issues if software was in the/becuase of the settings in "/user/you/library".
If this solves a lot of problems the go with care and copy the "E-MAIL +/OR ENTORUTE/ENTOURAGE + ITUNES" to the same place as where they came from but obviously in /user/you/library/ subfolders etc. same subfolders.
For Entorture search for a file called "database" as this holds all the e-mail for entourage and by copying it, when you next open Entorture it will pick-up all emails + adresses etc like it was never moved also in the same spot as it was in the new instalation / subfolders etc..
If all this fails and you as close to what I reccomended here, there is then still some issues then likely it is hardware related.
How do I know this : Had for 5 times in 365 days had my Pbook in for repair so I have had to about 120+ times had to reinstall OSX 10.3.9 and/or Tiger.
I hope this helps as for hardware I am buying Alienware or Extreme as they can upgrade the cpuvideobasically all else except the motherboard " amd opteron 64 dualcore + Nvidia fx quadro 1400 + 1 or 2 hd's + 1/2 dvd's etc. etc. $2500"

  • Battery on New Powerbook Suddenly Dying in Minutes?

My new PowerBook has had excellent battery performance during the two months I've owned it. But suddenly today it's started dropping down to 0% power and shutting off within minutes of powering up. Last night I watched a DVD until the battery ran down (which I've done before), then let it charge overnight.
It's fine when it's plugged in to AC, but the charge drops down from 100% to 0% within minutes when running on battery. It 'recharges' up to 100% within the same amount of time.
It's also giving the warning about running on reserve power at the 97% level as it's on its way down to zero.
Any advice or similar sudden battery problems on a new PowerBook?

    Edmund,
We were both participating on some threads re: "battery problems" a couple of weeks back, and then I dropped off - because the new battery Apple sent fixed everything and I haven't had a problem since. I just thought I'd pop back in so folks know that, for me anyway, the new battery fixed everything (to this point). And that means everything, inclusing some erratic behaviour that we were afraid were due to larger issues than the battery (the connector, etc.)
So, for everyone else, if you're having problems with your battery and power supply on your new hi-res PBook (and you have one of the bad batts), call Apple and have them send you a replacement. It's quick, easy, and it solved my issues. As Edmund say, check out the other threads...FYI everyone -- and good luck,

  • Migrating from older macs to a new powerbook G4

I've got one of the new powerbooks ordered and on the way, and I'm very excited about it -- improved resolution, all that screen space, tons of RAM, 1.67 mghz -- YAHOO.
But I'm also dreading the moving part. Right now I've got a desktop G4 desktop imac and a G4 ibook as well. I'll be selling both of these, after everything has been transferred off of them onto the new machine.
Does anybody know of a to-do list for this kind of migration? Fonts, keychains, preferences, not to mention applications and documents... I'm worried I'm going to do something in the wrong order or forget something.
Any hints or links much appreciated.

All new Macs sold include the Migration Assistant, which can transfer over most of your data from an older Mac to a newer Mac. If the fonts aren't transferred over automatically, you can put either machine in FireWire Target Disk mode by holding down the T key at startup, and then drag them to the folder /Library/Fonts/ on the PowerBook's hard disk to migrate them.

  • Why does AIM "unexpectedly quit" with the new Powerbook G4.

Before I confuse anyone, I am speaking of AIM (AOL Instant Messenger for Mac), not iChat. This is the most relevant discussion category I can find to ask this question.
But anyways, I just got a new Powerbook G4 12inch model with Super-drive and installed the most recent version of AIM 4.7. When using this program, it will frequently and randomly quit on me. A window will pop up saying that the program had "unexpectedly quit". This is quite frustrating because I have been a Mac user on AIM for more than a decade. I should also point out that I also have another friend who got the exact same Powerbook G4 model that I have at the same time (about a week ago) and she is also having the exact same problem with her PowerBook. So I believe there is a good possibility that this problem isn't a defect in my computer's software alone, but also in all the other new PowerBook G4s out there (at least the 12inch superdrive models). Anybody experiencing the same thing or have a solution?

Are you using AIM as your chat interface or iChat? You don't need to use the AIM client software in order to conduct a chat with an AIM account user, you just need an AIM screen name to access their host.
I removed the AIM client software from my system as soon as I realized that iChat doesn't use the AIM client software to function. I've never used the AIM client software to conduct a chat, just iChat. If it is just the AIM client that is crashing, you should be able to circumvent that by not launching the AIM client, but just iChat. Since I never actively ran the AIM client, I can't say how stable it is. iChat seems rock solid so far.

  • New PowerBook G4?

Just bought a new 12" PowerBook G4 60 days ago.
Is there yet a newer PowerBook? If so, why would they not mention a new version coming out? It took me 3 of these PowerBooks to get one that was not defective. If there is a better version, I would like it.

"Is there yet a newer PowerBook?"
    Yes
"If so, why would they not mention a new version coming out?"
Because Apple does not discuss unannounce product releases.
"If there is a better version, I would like it."
Well then you have to buy it, as your 30-day return policy has expired.

  • Bad news about Oracle XE 11g

Everyone's waiting for the XE 11g version.
The bad news is that we have to wait " [a year or two|http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9139290/Oracle_11g_Xpress_Edition_a_year_or_two_away] " before Oracle releases a no-cost Express Edition (XE) of its 11g database, according to Andrew Mendelsohn, the company's senior vice president of database server technologies.
So, no XE 11g before late 2011!
"Oracle plans to increase investment in MySQL, CEO Larry Ellison said during a keynote Sunday."
Meanwhile, IBM and Microsoft also releasing certain versions of databases at no cost.
Don't you think that Oracle should seriously reconsider decision to delay XE 11g.
Leave a comment below if you would like to see Oracle Edition 11g before 2011!

  • Bad news if I can't debug cfcs in a flex project

I'm trying to debug a cfc in a flex project Coldfusion builder installed as a plugin is Flash builder 4
But I'm getting a message saying:
File does not belong to a coldfusion project. Apply Coldfusion nature to the project to which the file belongs.
This is bad news if I can't debug cfcs in a flex project

Here are the targets (simplified) that are specific to the cfml export.  The real build.xml reads a build.properties file for the variables, and main runs the flex build first:

  • New powerbook - airport extreme does not connect after Tiger update

    Hi guys,
I see a lot of people are having problems with airport right now. I just got a new powerbook that worked fine with Panther, went online without a hitch. I downloaded a couple of software updates but don't know which. Then I installed the Tiger software and since then the computer does not connect. It show a wifi signal but tells me it can't connect etc.
    Any ideas,
    Thanks
    Sabina

    Hi Sabina,
I had the samething happen to me. I talked to tech support and they just had me click on the blue apple at the top- go to software updates- than I ran that...there was an update in there that corrected my problem. and I have been able to get get back my network!!
    so give that a try.

  • Time Machine migrate to new Powerbook

I am preparing to migrate my old Powerbook generated Time Machine backup (not Leopard) to my new powerbook with Leopard...this will be a complete system migration. Anything I should know? Is Time MAchine platform BLIND?
    Thanks!

Please clarify. If that old PowerBook isn't running Leopard, then it must be running a version of Mac OS X older than Leopard, which suggests that it doesn't have Time Machine and couldn't have created a Time Machine backup.

  • AC adapter bad? Powerbook won't run without battery

I think my powerbook (G4 aluminum, purchased Dec 2005) AC adapter is bad--the powerbook won't boot up without the battery (which, thankfully has not been recalled!).
I did check the AC issues listed in this Apple doc:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302461
The light on the adapter is green, the battery charge indicator menu states "Charged." However, none of the 5 lights on the battery are lit when the AC adapter is plugged into the computer and an outlet.
I have both AppleCare and ProCare--would a replacement AC adapter be covered under either plan?
P.S. the logic board was replaced in this powerbook last week by Apple because the computer would not boot up, there was a loud "fan" sound and one beep every 3 seconds.
    Anyway, help!
    powerbook G4 ( Dec 2005) - ARRRGHH!   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   and ibook G3 (10.3.9) -- never any problems!

I appreciate your advice! I agree that I should take in the powerbook for another round of repairs. However, I want to get some idea of the possible causes of this problem before returning it. Here's why:
    [warning: venting ahead]
I am not taking it back to the nearest Genius Bar because of the poor, indifferent service there. Specifically: first guy guesses that the logic board needs replacement, and says the contents of my hard drive are not "protected," then tries to sell me ProCare, which has some kind of hard drive back up deal included. Since I hadn't backed up in months, I bought the Procare contract.
The next day, a different local Genius tells me that the hard drive could not be recovered, it was the cause of the computer crash, and just the hard drive will be replaced at the factory, and it will take 2 weeks.
Two days later, another Genius calls to say my computer's ready for pick up. They replaced the logic board, and the hard drive is fine--untouched. Hurrah.
I used my Procare status to get a Genius appointment to pick up the computer. Yet another Genius doesn't want to listen to my complaints about the "hard drive disaster Genius." I make him turn on the computer [battery power] to make sure the hard drive is OK (yes). I am then shooed out the door.
This is why I don't trust the local Geniuses to examine my computer again. The second nearest Apple store is 25 miles away, so I guess I'll go there for future repairs.

  • Good and bad news but a little confused (draytek 2...

Just returned from holiday a few days ago, on return we found that our phone line was done, no voice or data. Doh
Today a nice BT engineer came, he found a problem with the external wiring of the line, a fe hours later a nice new connection and line up and running...that's good news number 1
As and engineer had been and I'd noticd that Mike_tuner had posted that a firmware update had become avaialble for the Draytek 2750, I like Mike had no luck in getting this router to work when BT infinity was first intalled at my house in January.
So armed with a new solid connection and the firmware I flashed the router connected her up and hay presto a connection, so 2 boxes become 1 the desk looks a lot neater and I can actually have a wireless conection that doesn't keep dropping out...Good news part 2
    Now for the bad news..
before the problems with the telphone line, although our connection had quire a few drop outs, i managed a download speed of around 32 mbps, being in the sticks I was more than happy, even though the BT website quoted my 40mbps at the time of ordering.  Now however since the the engineer has been I can only get around 13 mbps???
The bt line test (cant post as it only allows 1 test per hour) says that the maximum poss is 14 mbps?? confused.. i have had  30 so how is this possible??
so guys whats your thoughts, can I get it quicker, should it be quicker, has the work on the line reduced my speed..
    cheers

  • New Powerbook's sound is muted in some apps

I have a new powerbook that I got about a month ago, and to my great unhappiness it's having sound problems. When I am using iTunes sound will be produced as normal, and will most other applications (Myst IV, Reason, Garageband).
However, Windows Media Player and Realplayer will not emit sound when playing streaming files, and Quicktime will not emit sound when playing .mpeg movies {even from the hard disk}. Playing the same mpeg file in VLC does work though.
I began to have this problem yesterday and fixed it by restarting, but today restarting did not work.
Please help, this is making me sad. Thanks!
    Powerbook G4 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Okay, so a permissions repair + restart seems to have solved the problem for now. We shall see...

  • What's that noise on the new PowerBook?

Anybody with the new PowerBook (or old) sometimes hear some pretty low screaming noise coming from the LCD direction? Yeah, I know it's hollaween today, but what is it really?

    Larry,
same with me, but I think, this is sort of vibration coming from the base. Because, if i move the powerbook from the glass table (where it is situated normally) to another (wooden or cloth covered) surface, it stops.
But at halloween yesterday, it seemed to have been even louder

  • Need a new powerbook

I just dropped my Powerbook G4, the Titanium model, earlier today and it looks like the screen is broken so I reckon I'll need a new one. Does anyone think it would be better to get one of the new intel ones or the current 15" model? They are the same price but the older one has a dual layer burner and I would need to get updates for all my programs to work on the new machine. Any advise would be great, thanks

Before you go out and drop a big wad of cash on a new Powerbook that you may not need right now, consider replacing your TiBook display. Here's a link to a place that does it in 3 days for about $550:
    http://www.powerbookresq.com/detail.php?prodID=P010397
I'm assuming you have a 1GHz TiBook, which the above link applies to. If you have a slower model, you might want to ignore this post and everything I'm saying below. Anything slower than a 1GHz TiBook would probably not be worth fixing at this point. But if you DO have a 1GHz model, keep reading.
I have no affiliation with Powerbookresq, and I have nothing to gain from telling you about them. One of my work buddies sent her 'book in recently (a 15-inch AlBook) and they did a great job. From the time she called them to the time she got it back was only 3 days. Overnight shipping, both ways, is included in the price.
I am 100% in favor of the idea of buying a new Powerbook, especially since TiBooks are pretty long in the tooth these days. But I also think a $550 investment in repairing your TiBook and waiting 6 months or so before buying a new MacTel 'book makes more sense right now. Let someone else find the bugs (if there are any to find), let Apple fix them, and buy a 2nd generation MacTel 'book over the summer!
Besides, if you fix your TiBook, you'll always have a solid backup 'book if you ever need one, and $550 would be worth it.
Good luck, whatever you decide to do.
