Bad or incorrect printer driver in SL

I have a network setup that includes a Fedora 11 box sharing my HP 5610 printer via CUPS. The Fedora box can print to the printer without issue. However, when I try to print from my MBP running SL, anything B&W doesn't print, it just spits out a sheet of paper, and anything color will only print magenta, and in the upper corner of the page. I'm fairly certain this is a driver issue with SL (although I can't prove that, I only have two computers right now so no way to test it), but I don't know how to solve it. The Generic Postscript is the driver that behaves as above. If I choose the HP driver, it doesn't even get to the printer. Can't find anything else in the driver listing that would make sense. I'm hoping someone has seen this before and can point me to a quick resolution. I'm also willing to accept potential config issues with CUPS, although this setup did work about 6 months ago with 10.5.X, but it's been a while. I'm going to try to find another machine that I can use to test this, but for now, I'm stumped. Thoughts?
-Pete

Pete,
The OfficeJet 5610 is not a PostScript printer, so unless your Fedora box is acting as a PostScript rip, I don't understand why that would be working. Technically it should just work if you use the HP driver for that printer, just make sure you are using the latest HPIJS driver your printer as well. There may be a driver mismatch issue.
Just trying to help.

  • Incorrect Print Driver?

Recently, we began having problems printing a barcode label through a SATO printer.  Essentially, the font is wrong, causing the barcode to be unreadable.
Basically, whenever we RDP from Win7 or a thin client (I say newer, but we have only tested on one), we seem to be getting the wrong print driver for our SATO printer. I tried searching around to find out how RDP decides what driver/settings to use, but have
    not had much luck.
We have tried the following scenarios:
    Print directly from XP: works
    Print directly from Win7: works
Print through Citrix from XP: works
Print through Citrix from Win7: works
Print through Citrix on thin client: works
Print through RDP from XP: works
Print through RDP from Win7: fails
Print through RDP from thin client: fails
Print through Citrix from thin client (Same one): works
What could cause this behavior, and how do I fix it? Not using RDP is not an option.
    Update:
I tested at my local site with a thin client, and it works.  So now, one site's thin clients do not work, while another's do.

At my site, the server is running Windows 2008 R2.
The printer is not redirected.  It is a shared printer installed on the print server (or in the testing scenario shared from my laptop, but same results).  Regardless, any way I look at it, the driver is SATO CL412e.  When I go into the About
tab I see the same version and build number as well.
This is why it is confusing.  From everything I know to check, the print driver is exactly the same.  However, the behavior definitely is not.  How is it that when I RDP from my laptop (Win7) it somehow uses what appears to be a bold font,
but when I do so from literally any other scenario it is correct?  In the case of the other site, even the thin client is incorrect (same behavior as Win7 RDP to server).

  • Print Driver Isolation: What exactly constitues a printer driver instability, failure or bad driver?

Server OS: Windows 2008 R2 Standard
The Microsoft PDI blogs and HP PDI Documentation detail PDI prevents a printer driver instability, failure or bad driver problem.
What exactly constitues a printer driver instability, failure or bad driver? They're rather vague terms. Is it specifically poorly coded drivers, drivers causing problems that are "by design" etc...
Could someone please explain how PDI knows this?
    OR
Is it simply a case of using PDI to proxy off print jobs to an isolated host process keeps it separate from the main Spool process and therefore the theory being drivers that cause a problem (any problem?) cannot interfere with the main Spool process?
    Thanks
    Alex

    Thanks for this.
The reason I ask as we're finding PDI doesn't always prevent the Spooler service from breaking. Specifically hitting 100% CPU usuage and causing the Print Server to grind to a halt.
    (namely another thread here:
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/ea562bee-6356-49c3-ad1f-e86944a30d25/windows-2008-r2-standard-spoolsvexe-process-hitting-100-cpu-usage).
This is presuming the issue is the print driver that has been coded using "poor coding guidelines" of course. Hence the question.
"If you would like to debug a few failures, I can point to several scenarios to easily kill the process."
    How do you mean?

  • Should I install a 32 bit printer driver on a 64 Operating Sytem?

I have an HP Officejet 6700e wireless printer.  It is used by 2 computers.  The Operating Systems on the computers are as follows:
1 – HP Pavilion laptop using Windows 8.1, 64 bit.
2 – HP Pavilion laptop using Windows 7 Pro, 64 bit.
I noticed there are BOTH 32 bit and 64 bit printer drivers for Windows 7 and Windows 8 & 8.1.
     I have 2 questions:
First, since both computers use 64 bit operating systems, shouldn't I install the 64 bit printer driver?
Second, is there any advantage to installing the 32 bit printer driver on a 64 bit operating system?
    Thanks very much, Terry

Install the driver which  matches the operating system and the bit type (32-bit or 64-bit)  that is installed on each PC.
Second, is there any advantage to installing the 32 bit printer driver on a 64 bit operating system? There is no  advantage at all. It would actually be a bad practice unless the printer driver is compatible with both bit types.

    Hi lt12345,
I understand that you are looking to use the Photosmart 2710 with Windows 8.1 RT, but are unable to locate a driver. In my attempt to locate a driver I have come up empty handed. It appears that this printer is not supported for printing from Windows RT.

I have an imac running OS10.6.8 and an Apple laserwriter 16/600PS.  Is it possible to connect these directly without networking?  Where can I find the printer driver?

It turned out that WD is the big bad guy in this game.
According the data rescue company where I asked for an inspection, both of the drives had their reader head loose. And in the one, which was my already-in-use disk its even damaged the platters... xxxxx
So its time to pay bunch of money to recover, and take a walk to wd service to bang on the desk.
Also note - it may be somehow related to intellispeed technology - since macs not really friendly with wd-s built-in solutions.
On the other hand, with WD GP 1Tb there is no problems at all for ages.

  • When install printer driver via Bonjour, what information OS/CUPS communicate with printer firmware to auto-detect and find correct PPD to install?

    Hi guys,
We are developing printer driver/firmware for Mac OS X 10.5 and up. Right now we have problem that  printer firmware fail to be auto detected by Mac OS 10.5 during installation via Bonjour. Could anyone teach me how the communication works between OS/CUPS and printer F/W during the installation via Bonjour? What kind information the two sides exchange?
    Any input will be appreciated!

Sorry for the incorrect information. The OS should be Mac OS X 10.4 instead of 10.5

  • [Request] Lexmark 08z printer driver (deb or rpm packages)

Good evening! I have been trying and trying to get either Lexmark's 08z Printer Driver .deb or .rpm to convert to a tar.xz or tar.gz to install with pacman.
Here is a link to Lexmark's support page. (You can navigate to either the .deb or .rpm from there easily.)
I have a college paper due on monday, so it's not immediately pressing.
Thank you for all of your help in advance!
    Leo

Thanks ASOM! That did the trick. Next time I will investigate a little more before picking up a new piece of hardware that just started to support Linux.
I suppose I could see that money spent as an encouragement for Lexmark, since they did take the big leap into the scary waters of open source support.
Perhaps with a little helpful feedback, we can get them to put the drivers in a package like HP uses. I don't care what's in the package that gets my printer to work, just so long as it is fully functional. I know, I know.. "Bad Open Source Advocate!" ...but we can just club these companies to death when they don't do every little thing our way. After all, most of us use nVidia cards, since the nVidia blob is still better than the open source nouveau driver. (For the time being. I still have faith in those devs!)

  • Can't install printer driver for Epson Workforce 845 on Lion

I can't seem install the printer driver for the Epson Workforce 845 on my MacBookPro running OS 7.2.
I installed the software from Epson but the printer installer can't find it.

I just finished installing an Epson Workforce 545 on Lion.  This info is valid as of early March 2012. The trick seems to be this: DON'T install using the CD that comes with the printer.  DON'T download the driver from Epson.
First do an Apple Software Update to make sure the machine is up-to-date.  Then simply open the Printer & Scan preferences and add the Epson printer.  It will download the driver directly from Apple and you will be good to go.  If you do install the bad drivers from Epson, you have to remove the /Library/Printers/EPSON folder and also anything EPSON in the Cache folder, then start over.

  • 10.6 snow leopard printer driver for Z23

Help!! I looked and looked everywhere for a printer driver for Z23 on OS 10.6. I tried to load the optional installation from CD but, after installing, it did not list Z23 and it screwed up my other printer drivers. I got Z23 printer from Apple Store when I purchased Mini Mac with OS 10.2. But, the mini mac died and I had to purchase iMac with 10.5 and then upgraded to 10.6. So, I really need a Lexmark Z23 printer driver for Mac OS 10.6 so bad. Please expedite. I really appreciate it.

The last driver for the Z23 for Mac is for OS X 10.3. <http://support.lexmark.com/index?locale=en&productCode=Z23COLOR_JETPRINTER&userlocale=EN_US&segment=DOWNLOAD&os=MAC_OS_X_10_3_X&page=downl oadsList&oslocale=enUS#1> That's it, there ain't no more. It's no longer supported and hasn't been for a very long time. I had a Z23 many years ago and was less than impressed with its performance then. (The very first item on the FAQ: "Why is my Z23 so slow?" and no, they weren't joking.) And that thing shipped with just a colour cart, you needed to buy the black cart separately... and it wasn't easy to find the black carts. You're gonna need a new printer. Sorry, but them's the facts.

  • How to completely delete a printer driver

I can't access the "manual Feed" option in my print dialog. There isn't one. Yet, the literature says there is. And without it, I can't print on CDs—I get a paper jam error every time. So I've begun the long process of deleting the driver for that printer so I can re-load it fresh.
Problem is I can't make it go away. What little pieces do I have to trash before my computer forgets this printer exists? I've dumped the .plist files and deleted the printer from my Printer Setup Utility and have restarted. But each time I go back to the print dialog, there it is again. It's like a bad stray cat that keeps showing back up at your front door. Help!

    What brand/model is the printer?
When you trash a preference file (.plist), a new file is created when the app is activated. You may have to reload the printer driver.
Something that might work. Tape a letter size piece of paper to the back side of the CD. Then feed it into the printer. It might keep the printer from detecting an "undersize" (i.e., the CD) item & getting the error/jam message.
     Cheers, Tom

  • DNS server refurse to start after installing MFC-7820N printer driver

Last night I installed a new printer driver brxubprt11c.dmg for Mac OSX 10.4 V.1.1.0
This morning I could not get the DNS to run, which had been running for months. I would start but immediately stop again. I try to save the setting again with a small change but alas. The apple tech support had me check my hard drive and repair permission, but alas. They recommended that i read "getting started supplemental manual" and did a new DNS setup.
This night I decided to copy all the setting (I took screen captures and dragged the DNS Config.plist to my desktop. Just in case, I changed the log setting to "debug"... Maybe it would tell me something... I started it up...but it kept running...
Does this make any sense to anyone? Does anyone has a guess how saving the log setting might have got the thing back to work? Does it save only the change in the log file or the whole DNS Config.plist?

This was due to a bad hard drive
