Bad start!

Hello folks, I've been an Apple user since 1997 when I got to the USA. Did my M.A, gave classes and way back to Brasil, from where I am typing right now.
I brought with me my beloved Power Mac G3 beige 266mghz, my iMac G4 flat Mac OS 10.1.2 and my iBook G3. Then I had my iBook stolen here in Brasil, with all: Mac Os 10.3 disks, cables etc.
My friend and Professor came to Brasil to a visit and he brought a iBook G4 got from ebay, as I had asked him to do it.
I was using my iBook G4 for almost a month when suddenly all my info were lost, with no explanations whatsoever! Then I figured all they were under my name as user, but a new user is now on place, called macuser. I'd really thanks if someone can tell me what to do:
1- how to put back my user, because I lost my configs;
2- as my Professor bought this iBook on ebay, it came with no disks. Is it possible to make a "copy" of the Mac OS 10.4.11 to keep just in case something happened?
Sorry for being so naive with Macs, but I am a Professor as well, and my use is Word/Excel/Safari/Mail. Now I am trying iWorks trial version and I found it amazing!!
Thanks in advance.
Prof. Mauro

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Recently I bought an iBook G4 on EBay to upgrade for a friend's daughter, and one thing I noticed was that most of the iBooks I saw for sale appeared to still have their original hard drives, which are by now at least 5 years old. The average useful life of a notebook hard drive is 3-5 years, so if the iBook you got still has the original hard drive, it could well be going south.
If you open Disk Utility, is the SMART status verified? If not, the drive is failing. Even if SMART is verified, the drive could still be failing.
This could be why your user account seems to have vanished.
If your ibook is working well enough to download something, download and run SMART UTILITY:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/32454
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. SMART Utility will give you a comprehensive analysis of the physical health of your hard drive.
It may be possible to recover your data using your iMac and FireWire Target Disk Mode:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
This would enable you to mount the iBook's drive on your iMac's desktop and see if you can recover any files.
Not sure what resources you have where you are, but there is contact information for Apple:
http://www.apple.com/support/contact/phone_contacts.html
You can call Apple with the serial number and get a replacement set of original discs for a fee. You will want discs at some point, and there's no substitute for the original discs.
If your hard drive is failing, you will need to replace it. If that is not a feasible thing to do where you are, alternatively you can buy a firewire external drive and install the OS on it and run it that way.
"User" or "Macuser" sounds like what the seller put on the iBook when he put it up for sale after erasing the drive and reinstalling the software.
One thing to try. Go to >System Preferences>Accounts and see if you can see your account there. If so, click on it to see if you can get to it. You may have to unlock the padlock at the bottom of the pane.
Good luck!
Good luck!

Deos anyone know what time the last episode of Breaking Bad starts streaming on itunes?

    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.

  • BT bad start, great finish

    Afternoon all.
If you don't want to read it all skip to the bottom.
I've been reading the forums for a long time, waiting for Infinity to arrive in my area, and had been growing concerned about the BT service and support.... They didn't get of to the best start.
After being lied to by Sky about being able together Fibre from them (Long story) , I cancelled my less that 1 month old contract with them and placed an order with BT straight away for a phone line and infinity.
Order placed was told an engineer would come visit in just under two weeks. April 30th to be exact, between 8-1pm.
The time slot came and went no engineer.
Phoned BT. Got put through to a call centre where my first language wasn't the same as theirs, after being told off for coming through to the wrong department and then passed along to two more incorrect departments. I was quite literally dropped to a third department without any word of warning.
This 3rd department the first with actual knowledge and no language barrier was where BT started improving. They managed to get hold of the engineers and was told they had no record of the job hence no visit. Made numerous calls and managed to track down the job and assign it to an engineer as an Emergent visit or someother term.
3pm the engineer turns up for what we both think is going to be an easy job.
Long story short 2 hours later well past when his shift is finished, he has put right the botch job the last BTengineer did to my phone wires (Which the 1st engineer did to fix the bad jobs the builders did apparently) and I have a working BT line and Infinity at speeds well above the estimate and more importantly above the 1.4mb I was lucky to reach before.
I forget the lady on the phones name who tracked down the job and assigned it to an engineers (Sam I think it was), and I also forget the engineers name. But If there is anyway to track them down, I would really like to say a big thanks to them.  They turned what I thought was going to be another nightmare like Sky in to a good result.

  • Initialize Sync - bad start!

    Hi,
Not having the best of starts to this Webtools project!. The initial synch was running quite happily until our addon module license expired at the stroke of midnight!. The Synch manager had closed itself down by the time I came in today. Having checked through the webtools tables they did show that some data had been synched, but by no means all. Synch Manager logs showed numerous errors being reported when the license ran out, which is understandable as it lost its connection to the SAP db.
The new license file has been applied.
I had hoped it would be able to recover by clicking the Run Synch button, but this resulted in the log message:
DEFAULT sync in progress. Canceling new synch request.
Nothing actually started to happen on the B1 server or the Webtools server (task manager = 0 activity).
My next try was to retry the initialize Sync again:
    initialize Sync
    Clear Logs
    Run Synch
    Refresh logs
This showed the same log message as before, and again, no activity at all, although the tables that had been partially populated in the Webtools db had been cleared down.
The B1 queue is still populated.
It would be great if someone could point me in the right direction on how to successfully perform the initial synch again.
    Thanks.

Thanks to miragejb  on the old http://boug.us/forums .
I had to delete the lock file to be able to perform the initial synch again.

  • First impressions -Bad Start

Took me some time to get all the various connections sorted. Initial feeling is that the freeview picture isn't as good as my old box. Some of the channels(including BBC1)have black lines around the edge which weren't there before. When I had a quick look at the on demand content had to say I was a bit disappointed. Thought I'd try it out this evenoing only to get a message saying it was currently unavailable, please try later. I couldn't access any of the menu items - I think I got error 400 - and then to add insult to injury I couldn't even get the Freeview channels , just got a BT screen saying 'starting up' or something similar. So, only analogue to fall back on. Lucky we haven't had the switch off yet. First impressions, not good.

The black lines are displayed while a 4:3 aspect programme is showing in order to display it correctly. If you'd rather have it distorted, but fill the screen then you can use the shortcut menu to stretch. If I remember rightly you may have to keep setting that, can't remember as I never use it myself.
Make sure that the box is successfully connected to the internet through the hub as it won't be able to start without chatting to the server.

  • Bad start to relationship with BT.

    Good morning
I am not sure if this is just a rant or a plea for help or advice! As an ex-Virgin Media customer, (understand they are not perfect but fibre seems somewhat more reliable,) who had no choice apart from BT having left a cable area, I am becoming somewhat frustrated.
I have been with BT Broadband for nearly 3 weeks now and for the first 2 weeks, everything was great. The line went stable very quickly and just a few disconnects in the first few days as they tested the line.
Monday morning this week, 8am, I was using the internet and bang, off it went. Broadband light on HH went off completely. I assumed for a few hours it was a local area fault but when it didn’t come back, I contacted Technical Support. I have to say the service hasn’t been brilliant and I think I speak for many people when I say the old adage that off-shoring does not tow the line when it comes to delivering various aspects of customer service.
On Monday, I was told that there was a fault on the line and that an engineer would have to visit on Tuesday. We agreed between 1pm and 6pm. This was after plugging/unplugging/re-plugging/unscrewing various aspects of the telephone network in my house but we established that by connecting the HH to the master socket, and no Broadband light appeared that the problem was outside the property. The phone is working perfectly, (HH phone and other regular phone,) so I am pleased at least it’s not my own wiring! :-)
Being at work on Tuesday, I arranged for my poor sister in law to arrive at about 12:30 and sit there until 6pm. Shocked to find when I arrived home that no one had called or called at the flat! Luckily, she had worked her way through Gavin and Stacey DVD’s so all was not lost.
On the phone to BT again. 40 minutes to get through. Told that there was a fault at the exchange and that the engineer had been working on it but could not finish the job until the following morning. Obviously, 6pm had come and it was time for him to go home for his dinner and have a cup of tea and a **bleep**………..I’m sorry, but this beggars belief in terms of customer service. Firstly, you don’t down the tools on an unfinished job and secondly, being a telecommunications company, did someone not think to lift the phone and call me to tell me that there was no need to have someone sitting there all day or that the problem was not resolved?
Anyway, moving on, I was told that the line would be reactivated on Wednesday morning and that someone would call me. I got a message on my voicemail at 5:30pm from the Fault Desk advising that the problem was fixed and to monitor the connection for 24 hours. I bound home, open the door, my eyes zoom onto the HH……………..no broadband light.
Phone BT. 50 minutes to get through. Advised that the problem could not be fixed remotely from the exchange and now an engineer visit is required. Call sister in law and it’s a yes, so this afternoon, she is arriving at about 12:30pm to sit and wait. I’m sorry but I have no faith that the engineer will turn up, that anyone will call me or that they will verify the problem is fixed and I’m sorry but the language barrier with India is so frustrating because you can’t have a conversation with them that is not scripted. I don’t condone any form of racism here because it’s not about that at all, it’s a genuine issue with off-shored services and the strong accents and the inability or instruction not to deviate from pre-defined responses.
Can someone restore my faith? I need the internet for work purposes, as does the other half and we have both been unable to get things done at home this week which is making us look bad to our employers!
    Thanks all
    Best regards
    Jamie
PS I think I read on here somewhere that a moderator may be able to help? I couldn’t really tell, surfing the net on my phone instead!!

    Hi Jamie ....
First thing to do is leave the connection undisturbed and running 24/7, no resets.
It'll take a few days to recover after the "fault intervention".
If you need to contact a moderator drop an email in with account detail, they will tell you where the fault
process is up to.    BT Forum Moderation Team <[email protected]>

  • Bad start up issues

So today, my MBP froze and locked up on me. I was just browsing the web. Now when I try to boot it, several things happen.
The gray Apple screen shows diagnoal bricked lines, alternating from gray to white. It usually freezes here. If it doesnt, The desktop never really shows up. just thick, black lines up and down. Intrestingly enough, the mouse displays fine and over all the lines. At least until it turnes into a beach ball, then freezes. I can start it via install disc, but display issues are still there. I can boot into Ubuntu, works fine as far as I can tell, but still has bricked look. I can run disk utility via install disc, but it freezes. I can load it as an external to my iMac, and run disk utility, and it checks out. What can this be?

    jediknight,
it seems as though this is a known problem with Early 2008 MacBook Pros. It might be worthwhile to contact Apple about it anyway.

  • Bad Start - Signal Help?

I was a Sprint customer but sick of Commodore 64 dialup modem speeds so decided to switch to Verizon when the 5S came out. The map shows great coverage in my area, but to be sure I chatted with CSR and they confirmed I am good.
I woke up at 3am on release day, went online and completed my order around 320am. Expected shipping date was only 4 days away (9/24/13).
Then I got an email saying 10/7/13. I can live with that.
I checked on the 7th and my status was "Unknown shipping" with something about payment not received yet (even though my card had been charged.) I called in and the CSR expected it would ship the 14th. Status online never changed even though they had my money.
On 10/14 I called and was told it is at Fedex, and I'd get a shipping code that night. Didn't happen.
On 10/15 I called and was told that I was the second one to have an issue, but she assured me it was at Fedex and I'd get a shipping code that night. Didn't happen.
On 10/16 I called and was told that the 5S was on backorder, so could expect in 11/11. That was a no-go so I had her check, and she saw that the order was complete so I'd get a shipping code that night.
On 10/17 I called and was told that something didn't look right, the CSR was going to talk to warehouse and call me back that night. No call.
On 10/21 I called and got an ITC tracking code, and was told I'd have status that night. I called that night and was told I needed to wait 24 hours for status updates.
On 10/22 I called and was told that I should not have had an ITC tracking code, that whoever did that was wrong, and he guaranteed it would go out tonight.
    FINALLY!
On 10/24 I received a call from the porting department. We went through and she confirmed that the port was all set.
I received my phone and (drumroll please) it would not activate. I called CSR and was told that the porting had not been entered yet, so to use my temporary phone number in the meantime. I don't have (nor did I want) a temporary number. He suggested I called porting.
Called porting, CSR couldn't figure out why. About 30 minutes later after elevating we had success! She called me on the line to test, and her call dropped. Sitting on my front porch I had one bar.
Most of my house has one or no bars. If I'm in the basement standing near a window I can get two. If I'm at the fence line of my far back yard I might even get three.
Needless to say - I'm not happy with the transition. And now I've gone from 5 bars with Sprint (they sent me a free Airave since they had a poor signal) to 0-1 bars with Verizon. What's the possible fix for 1) the repeated lies from CSR 2) the lack of CSR to see the actual coverage map and 3) my lack of coverage?
    - Rob

Only addressing the signal issue since trying to get a bally hooed new Apple device is going to be a real pain since everyone wants one.
In most cases there is no pin point for direct coverage. Look at a pie plate and make a pin hole in the center, then look at that pin hole as your cell tower. Closer to the tower gives better reception, farther away then the signal degrades. Verizon shows this map with all these red blotches, but there are white and gray blotches as well.
Take it from a business point of view when you are looking for service and the customer rep say's "Oh there is good coverage in your area" you believe them. Instead you know Sprint has good signal strength but you don't like their data speeds, Sprint is not fully out with their LTE service but calls are good. Verizon said everything was great but you never checked the service before you bought it. Yes in the area they might have service, and its 1x and 1 bar for voice service, you could try buying an extender from verizon but I think you will be wasting your money.
On T-Mobile certain devices have the ability to use your home wifi to make and receive calls, the iPhone alas has not the ability for it so that wouldnot help you. But you could ask a friend with one of their devices to let you see if their talk and data work better than what you have.
Sell the phone to another verizon customer to afford the Early Termination Fees and maybe ssome of the costs for a new device somewhere else.
    Good Luck

  • 1st purchase from iTunes and its off to a bad start for me

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1857542&tstart=0 here a linky, I posted it in wrong section, until I found this part. this forum styles, etc is different than what I am used to

    Thanks for the reply Anil.
    I had tried that - didn't work.
But I got in touch with SAP Labs B'lore today and they had contacted Keystone.
Seems like I am appearing as an unregistered user on the system locally. But as a valid delegate on the server.
They have intimated that they will try to accommodate me in case of calcellations. Quite disappointing actually. I flew down just for TechEd and forget not being able to reserve seats for the Hands On - it now seems like I wonlt be able to attend the Conference completely now forfeiting the Entry and travel.

  • A wrong start to be a professional programmer?

a wrong start to be a professional programmer?
I graduated a university with applied computer science major and business
    administration minor.
I hoped at my first job I learn a lot of quick tips and business practice
such as robust error handling and good programming concepts and practice as
well good code and improving my code by monitoring and tutoring and so on. I
wanted to learn something I couldn't learn at school and take a step into
    real professional programming world.
But I guess I was in the totally wrong place.
My first job was at a small consulting company. I got this I think I had sun
java certificate, although I was fresh out of school.
At the job I asked for such things above, but I received nothing. I had to
deal with everything myself. I had to rely heavily on newsgroup and books.
We couldn't even get technical support from Microsoft on detailed matters. I
had to learn many things quickly dealing with troubles myself with kind
peoples help on newsgroup. I was really stressed. If it seems there is a
project chance from a client I had to learn an enterprise product like in
3or4 weeks. I don't know if that's appropriate. It was stressful to try
this or that without even basic knowledge of good coding practice. From
Java, I learned ASP, VB, VBscript, Jscript, IIS, Windows2000, SQL server
2000, and so on. I was alone in the office for a in-house client project.I
spend big time doing Windows 2000, IIS administration. I didn't have books.
I felt sorry to ask buy me books. I did for some books but too many seemed
sorry. At the beginning he even told I can do everything just with MSDN
online library. At that time it was quite hard to search. You know online
library returns 1000 if you search a word. I was new and didn't know much
how it was organized(it's better organized (I am familiar with it now) and
    how to use MSDN library.)
I wish I could just focus on coding, but setting up and some administration
issues like right and security regarding RDS and IIS viruses regarding Win
2000, SQL server 2000, IIS administration gave me hard time without proper
knowledge about security I didn't even know security was issue, and didn't
    have books.
I thought it was that way naturally.
I was busy figuring out my coding issues and some other issues regarding
program and database design and analysis yes I did even these thing without
knowledge. There was a little help from another programmer but mostly very
insufficient and unprofessional. When I asked my boss several times to
review my code, he was inconsiderate and say yes it looks good, although I
knew it sucked and needed a lot of improvement and repair. I had to
everything alone. It was horrible and I was paid less than 40,000 a year
rate. For some months I didn't work, I didn't know if I was working or not,
and I found that I was "not working" after I didn't get paid. Because no
client = no pay. Eventually my payment was $27,000 that year. My boss was
telling I can do and know everything and I am an expert advertising me that
way to clients and made fake resume with fake experience and skillsets.
I feel I am not really good at anything now.
It was very bad experience, and I guess it was very bad start.
From a few people's talk, I suppose as an entry level you start with coding
and robust coding and good programming practice and do some easy basic
coding work and you improve your skill and improve your understanding of
project to the next higher level step by step. You learn things one by one
with some dedicated time. None of that happened to me.
I really want to start again as an entry level programmer and learn steady
and robust things step by step.
My case was dead wrong and unusual I think now. Do you think so?
I really don't care for money, I just want to have a good career. That's honest, robust and steady. And progress truthful and sincere step by setp.
How can I find a good company for me?
    Thank you very much

From the way you describe what you want to do, I would recommend trying to get a job with a government contractor.
Government contracts generally do alot of Research and Development, which allows you to learn alot more that at a consulting firm. There is usually less pressure working on a government contracts than in private industry. The main disadvantage is that these jobs generally pay less. But if you're looking for a chance to learn it's a good way to go.
    I hope that's helpful.

  • Yaourt - Bad Install? Trying to remove and install properly...

Hello all, I just posted in the "Newbie Announcement Thread" and I'm about as new to Linux as someone can get. I picked up the Arch ISO a few days ago and followed the Beginners Guide on the wiki and have installed Xfce4 and GDM on my Sony Laptop so far. I was looking for a AUR Helper and thought to go with Yaourt based on some brief search results.
I goofed up, and got impatient i think ... please be gentle.

I'm thinking I had more steps to do maybe? or was "make install" it? I ask because pacman does not see Yaourt installed so i cannot "pacman -Rns yaourt" and i'm getting an error when I try to do anything with yaourt.
[durzo@PCNAME ~]$ sudo pacman -Rns yaourt

Did I do something wrong to break yaourt or is this something different that i'm missing? I do not think i have the "package-query" package installed that is available on the AUR, but i didn't know it needed to be installed along with yaourt.

tomk wrote:Durzo, I'm sure you're delighted you got yaourt installed, and hopefully you learned something, but IMO you're getting off to a bad start. Others have already said it, but it's worth saying again - fi you're going to use the AUR, learn how it works first before you start using any helper application. Your self-confessed uber-noobiness makes this an even more crucial requirement.
As meph mentioned, I too intended on having Yaourt only install AUR packages keeping pacman the primary in package installation.
The point is to know how to use the AUR without relying on a helper, because yaourt is more than a 'helper'. Something like 'cower' is much more of a helper in that you still have to take care of the main steps yourself. Using yaourt instead of pacman for -Syu doesn't change much, its using it as a 'pacman for the AUR' which can cause confusion. Which is as well the only reason to use it....
Durzo wrote:"learn how it works first" ...do you mean download each tarball PKGBUILD from the AUR separately, and then install with the "makepkg -is" command?
Yes. The fact that you even know that's what you have to do is already good (perhaps better than those who have right-away gone for yaourt).
There's no inherent 'negative' to yaourt (if you ignore the fact that it may not work following some pacman/libarchive upgrades) if you know how to live without it.

  • Create Custom method in a Implemented Badi

    Hello Folks,
I am writing code in a badi but some part of code is repeating, as there is no provision for creating perform statements, I would like to create a method and put the code in that method so that the code in the badi will look modularized.
But i don't have much idea on how to do this.
Can anyone help me how we can do it.
    Thanks for your help.
    Regards,
    Raj

    Hi,
This should be very straight forward,
when you go to transaction SE19 with a particular BADI, then you can find a class attached to that BADI starting with Z, go into the class in edit mode, and add a method u want and then code it to your need. and you can call the same method from any of your BADI method with CALL METHOD me->xyz.
    Regards,
    Prasanna

  • Multiple Insert in Doc Save Badi when publishing Bid Invitation

    Hi to all experts,
Currently i need to track changes in bid invitation. What i did is using doc save badi to get the value (bbp_bd_bid_getdetail) and compare them with the value i save in a cutom table.
Then the problem come in. Even if there is no changes, the badi will still cause an insert into my custom table. I used the debugger to go through the code and it never go to my insert statement.
However once i finishing running the dubugger, my custom table will have a new entry...
Why is this happening? IS it due to the different GUID in the bid invitaion?
Points will be awarded generaously, thanks again for reading.

    Hi Disha and Marcin,
Thank you so much for your prompt replies. I have awarded points. We are using SRM 5.5.
Correct me if I am wrong, I have thought of using the doc_change badi but how do I confirm the changes should user cancel the transaction?
    Hi Marcin,
I am new to this term LUW, please elaborate more on this.I have checked and confirm no other program or badi called my function modules.
I have suspected that the badi was called n-times and insert a line into my custom tables. I tried using modify in place of insert so that such problem can be avoided but this was not successful with saving longtext.
What I notice is after the system undergo a patch, the doc save badi started to behave in this way?
Please kindly advise, all SAP experts! Thank you!
